Flash Stock Rom without Wipe - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got a quick question regarding stock ROMs and OTA updates. We know that if we had an old version of Android (i.e. 4.2.2) and we can update to 4.3/4.3.1 OTA and it will NOT wipe the phone.
So if one is to download the latest official ROM from Sammobile. we have to wipe the phone when we flash the new ROM. Is there a method to flash ROMs from Sammobile that WILL NOT wipe the phone?

You DO NOT HAVE to wipe the device, even if you upgrade from 4.3 to 4.4.2, the firmware from sammobile will NOT wipe your phone. So if you are against wiping then go on, happy flashing. Your data will be intact.
But that being said, I did wipe my device. Why? Cause on previous occasions I have faced issues (some apps force closing etc) without wipe, so from then I always take backup and wipe. Do I like wiping? I absolutely hate it.
Some kids here, who goes by their developer tag also will say there is no need to wipe, well I don't listen to anyone other than me about this case, cause that person haven't faced any problem, I did, and nothing gives you more info than personal experience.
Just my 2cents.

If you are upgrading through OTA tgen you wont lose your data but if you are flashing through Odin you must wipe it. Odin requires a wipe!!
Sent from my OCTA CORE I9500

1) I cannot upgrade OTA anymore due to modifications performed on my stock ROM, i.e. custom kernel, mods, etc.
2) Looks like ODIN is what requires the wipe. Any technical reason for this?
3) ROMs downloaded from SamMobile are in the "tar.md5" format so they need to be flash through ODIN.
Based on the above points, there is no way to avoid a wipe if I was to upgrade.
Unsure what devilsdouble meant that flashing ROMs from SamMobile does not require a wipe. Can you please educate me on this?

[Q] what is currently the best way to root i9505?

Hi, i am in the uk and had my i9505 for around 2 weeks, just wondering the best way to now root and is there anyway which is the safest / recommended?
also, can rom's still be updated afterwards via ota or kies if i root, i know i would have to root again but would my phone still be supported by kies and look for new fw's after rooting?
thanks
james
Personally, I use the pre-rooted stock roms in the Android Development section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250824
Very easy to use, just download and flash via Odin3. There may be easier ways, but for me this is the easiest.
All you need to do then is flash custom recovery and you're done.
Edit: Not sure about Kies, but it's easy enough to flash back to a stock rom and then reset your phone to Official again.
Some custom roms offer OTA updates, but personally, I prefer just staying on a stock rooted and update via Odin as and when needed
Thanks for the reply, if I flash the pre rooted Rom will it wipe my phone or will settings and apps still be the same afterwards?

If you install pre rooted rom, all your apps, settings etc will remain. Odin3 doesn't touch the data partition, so you'll still have everything.
I usually clear cache/data after installing a new rom, so I start from fresh, but it's really upto you really
One thing to be aware of though is that flashing a pre-rooted rom will clear your custom recovery, so you'll have to reflash recovery after installing an updated pre-rooted rom

[Q] ODIN firmware vs. clean wipe & ROM flash... what's the difference?

ODIN firmware vs. clean wipe & ROM flash... what's the difference?
I realize the firmware flash will put the modem on the phone also (most ROM's won't).
But is there anything else an ODIN firmware flash will do that a simple clean wipe/format and ROM flash won't do to fix random issues?
Assuming the firmware was stock rooted firmware and the ROM was stock rooted ROM.
Nooobody?!
Can't think of anything off the top of my head. It'll install the default recovery and whatever modem, beyond that I can't think of anything. Boot loader can be changed as well depending on the image.
ODIN might also reset some low level values like proximity sensor values, etc. I really don't know for sure though.

It really depends what's in the odin package. Some con come with bootloaders, modems, stock 3e recovery. Some odin packages will not have bootloaders in them. A will almost always flash the boot.img, system, and apps. It won't have the modem, recovery, or bootlader. At least on the GS3 or GS4. On the Captivate the recovery was included with kernels and roms...so you flashed a new recovery with every rom.

Question about Odin

I want to root my N910F but there is one thing i need to know before i do this, i dont want to flash a custom rom, just stock rom with root acces.
I know something about rooting and flashing from my other phones.
What happens if i root my Note4, and samsung rolls out an update.
I know i wont get OTA's, but what happens if i download the update from sammobile, and i flash it via Odin, will i loose my files and settings everytime i get an update ?
Or is there an option to just "Update" the stock rom ?

If you flash a rom from sam mobile via Odin it will do a factory reset on your phone(data not internal).Depending from your options that you enable in Odin it could and could not delete your internal storage...and no in Odin there is not such thing as...update unfortunately something like that is only achievable with a custom recovery and flashing but not all the the time if a rom is very much different from another or their base is different a data wipe is a must.
In my experience flashing a basic update over your current rom will work if it was stock to begin with. Root will be removed when you do this. I would not recommend doing this as you could cause problems down the road. I would really not do it for major OS changes like KK to LP. Whenever I flash, I backup what I need to keep, full wipe with custom recovery, then flash and restore data. As mentioned you can't really update from Odin.
Just root the phone that's the reason u came to XDA if Samsung pushes out update it will be available for download on here

Flashing other carrier roms

does anyone know if i can flash an tmobile rom to an at&t galaxy s5 and will it lock its self or any risk i just want tmobile since they update quicker and if you can find a rom that uses oden and does not wipe my phone storage i just want to use download booster and wifi calling without rooting Ty
1. Yes you can flash a t-mobile s5 rom on a at&t s5.
2. It won't help you get updates any faster because even though you would be running a t-mobile rom, at&t is still your provider and they still control the updates. And most rom's delete the stock ota updater anyways.
3. No rom uses Odin, they are all flashed from recovery.
4. You always wipe data before flashing a rom. Not wiping data is called dirty flashing and is a pretty sizable no no.
If you are new to rooting and flashing, always ask questions someone here will help.
WHEN EVER YOU FLASH A NEW ROM, 1. ALWAYS MAKE A BACK UP IN RECOVERY FIRST. 2. ALWAYS WIPE CACHE, DATA AND DAVID BEFORE FLASHING A NEW ROM.

Downgrading from CM 14 Nougat to stock TW 5.0 lollipop???

Sorry if I'm posting in wrong section actually I'm a newbie
Hi all, I've updated my Note 3 SM-N900 to Cm 14 nougat 7.1.1 unofficial lonage os by ha_3g. Now i want to go back to my stock Twiz 5.0 lollipop, is it possible I've all my rom backedup by TWRP. Can i restore my backup without any problem?
Thanks in advance
nah, usually i just flash my firmware using odin without backup
Usually if you want to revert back to stock firmware, everything will be removed, including your custom recover(TWRP in this case), miscellaneous files and folders that were previously on your custom ROM. So, in summary, you won't be able to recover your backed up apps/data as TWRP will get wiped out as well, being replaced by the stock Samsung recovery.
Yep, wipe system, data, cache & dalvik then restore your backup.
Before updating I've backed up my stock Twiz rom via TWRP, now i just want to revert back to my Stock rom which was lollipop 5.0. I'm afraid bcz I've seen some where that we cannot install 5.0 (lower version) over 7.1 (greater) version it will brick the phone bcz of some bootloader issues, btw I've not messed up with bootloader, so plz advise me if it will be safe or not.
Lot of Thanks for the members of the forum who replied in no time & who r ready to help. Salute to all of u. you people r great
Only a stock firmware flashed with Odin can upgrade your bootloader.
And the latest official firmware for Note 3 is Lollipop 5.0.
So your bootloader still 5.0 even if you flashed a nougat rom.
Even more, custom roms don't touch bootloader or modem partitions, ever.
Go ahead
Hey bro. Just go to sammobile.com and download your rom and flash via Odin. Only Odin can downgrade your BL and Modem
Thanks alot for the clarification I'll go ahead now.
I can swap between 7.1 Nougat and 5.0 stock, with no issues, through my nandroids.
If you had a nandroid before, you shouldn't have any issue just using the TWRP function to restore your backup. It will be exactly as you had it before.
The only difference will be that you will still have TWRP installed, etc.
Anyways, you can swap back and forth as much as you like. You don't have to wipe anything, or use Odin, since you made a nandroid already.
Yes you can go back to lollipop . I have done that in my sm 900 exynos version. marshmallow and nougat drains battery
