Hi, i am in the uk and had my i9505 for around 2 weeks, just wondering the best way to now root and is there anyway which is the safest / recommended?
also, can rom's still be updated afterwards via ota or kies if i root, i know i would have to root again but would my phone still be supported by kies and look for new fw's after rooting?
thanks
james
Personally, I use the pre-rooted stock roms in the Android Development section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250824
Very easy to use, just download and flash via Odin3. There may be easier ways, but for me this is the easiest.
All you need to do then is flash custom recovery and you're done.
Edit: Not sure about Kies, but it's easy enough to flash back to a stock rom and then reset your phone to Official again.
Some custom roms offer OTA updates, but personally, I prefer just staying on a stock rooted and update via Odin as and when needed
Thanks for the reply, if I flash the pre rooted Rom will it wipe my phone or will settings and apps still be the same afterwards?

If you install pre rooted rom, all your apps, settings etc will remain. Odin3 doesn't touch the data partition, so you'll still have everything.
I usually clear cache/data after installing a new rom, so I start from fresh, but it's really upto you really
One thing to be aware of though is that flashing a pre-rooted rom will clear your custom recovery, so you'll have to reflash recovery after installing an updated pre-rooted rom

Could anyone give some info on what's the easiest way to get to a rooted stock Kitkat rom?
I'm currently running a rooted stock 4.3 rom with a couple of xposed modules with Team Win Recovery.
I can't update through the settings menu, because my phone is rooted, so i'll have to do it manually. Preferably I would like to update without the loss of data, just like an official update. It's no crisis if I have to though, I can always make a backup if I have to do a full wipe.

Flash the official KitKat update through Odin. You shouldn't lose any data. The root using CF- Auto Root

find the stock rom from samsung-updates.com or sammobile.com and flash through Odin 3.07 or TWR

Hello, so even though I'm fairly new to the world of custom ROM's I feel as though this website has provided me with more than sufficient information for me to keep on flashing. I've flashed a few ROM's in the past but I'm currently stuck as for what I should do next. I currently have an S4 ATT MF3 which I would like to upgrade to MK2 so that I can put a 4.4.2. ROM via Safestrap using the Deadly Venom method.
Based on the guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2573080) I need to boot into the stock recovery and flash stock MF3 then MK2 which I can then root and safestrap. When I added my first ROM on this device I replaced the stock ROM (I have a hatred for TouchWiz) and replaced with a GPE ROM.
My phone can no longer boot into the stock Samsung recovery, it merely just bootloops instead, but I can still flash via Safestrap. So what should I do? Can I get the stock recovery back? Would I have any issues if I flash the MK2 update via Safestrap instead of the stock recovery? Will flashing the MF3 stock tar via Odin be all that I need to do? Any advice would be appreciated!

If you don't mind losing your user data (back up anything you want from internal storage) just flash the MK2 full ODIN. Otherwise, there is a thread somewhere with just the MF3 recovery image and if you have root you could use an app to manually flash that (don't remember the app).

Possible to restore stock recovery?
So after (stupidly) assuming that I knew what I was doing since I have been rooting/flashing/breaking/fixing my S3 for two years now that I would be able to easily install CM11 on my dad's S4 since he is always complaining about AT&T bloatware. He is running the absolute latest update from AT&T and never rooted or anything. I was able to successfully root it using the extSdCard method, but then made the mistake of trying to flash TWRP.
After a couple of failures, I went onto these forums to see that it is well documented that custom recoveries do not work with the latest firmware. Noted, and I will keep an eye out for updates to this issue.
My questions:
Since the goal was only to install Cyanogenmod 11, I would have just run the CM Windows Installer if I wasn't trying to create a full stock backup first (hence why I tried rooting and installing TWRP first). Since that is no longer an option, has anyone attempted to use the CM Windows Installer on the MF3 build? I assume that if a custom recovery cannot be installed that this method will not work, but was just wondering if anyone has had success.
The more important questions...
Since the stock recovery is now gone, will this create an issue if a new OTA update is released and he attempts to install? I am wondering if the OTA updates rely on the existing recovery to complete the update or if the OTA will rebuild it before installing the update?
Lastly, are there reliable methods for restoring the stock recovery?
Thanks everyone!

I would flash in Odin the stock mf3 tar file, but out will wipe the device. All his apps and data. If you can find the mf3 recovery image file you could try to flash that in flashify, if you're rooted
Edit, found this. I didn't download the file but I'm guessing it's a .img file. You could flash that in flashify or use the dd command

In addition to the above post from jd, the CM installer will not work on our device as our bootloader is locked. There is no way to run any AOSP based ROM once your phone is on MF3 firmware or higher.

Thanks to everyone for all the information, and thank you especially for sharing the link. I am staying with my parents short-term in a very rural area with awful internet and I was dreading downloading the 2+GB stock firmware file just to get recovery back. This is perfect. Thanks again!
I want to root my N910F but there is one thing i need to know before i do this, i dont want to flash a custom rom, just stock rom with root acces.
I know something about rooting and flashing from my other phones.
What happens if i root my Note4, and samsung rolls out an update.
I know i wont get OTA's, but what happens if i download the update from sammobile, and i flash it via Odin, will i loose my files and settings everytime i get an update ?
Or is there an option to just "Update" the stock rom ?

If you flash a rom from sam mobile via Odin it will do a factory reset on your phone(data not internal).Depending from your options that you enable in Odin it could and could not delete your internal storage...and no in Odin there is not such thing as...update unfortunately something like that is only achievable with a custom recovery and flashing but not all the the time if a rom is very much different from another or their base is different a data wipe is a must.
In my experience flashing a basic update over your current rom will work if it was stock to begin with. Root will be removed when you do this. I would not recommend doing this as you could cause problems down the road. I would really not do it for major OS changes like KK to LP. Whenever I flash, I backup what I need to keep, full wipe with custom recovery, then flash and restore data. As mentioned you can't really update from Odin.
Just root the phone that's the reason u came to XDA if Samsung pushes out update it will be available for download on here

Hi,
I have rooted and installed TWRP on my 910F Note4 as I was fed up waiting on the lollipop update rolling out. I am currently on 4.4.4 and have made a full backup using TWRP of the stock rom.
My intention was flashing the Cyanogen ROM and using that, but i now see on sammobile there is a stock 5.01 rom available. I have a few questions about this.
1. If I flash to Cyanogen can I still revert back to the stock rom 4.4.4 I have made a backup with? I read somewhere there might be problems as I was on KitKat then moved to lollipop(Cyanogen).
2. Can I flash the stock lollipop rom from within TWRP? Or do you have to do this via ODIN?
3. If I flash the Lollipop stock ROM with Odin I assume I will lose root and TWRP? So this would have to done again?
Guess I am asking what is the best way to proceed?
Thanks again
Paul

hi Paul,
1. i beleve to flash CM from kitkat you will need to install the lollipop bootloader first.
2. You have to flash the stock rom via Odin, you will keep all apps settings and files but you will lose root (you u can re root in 3 minutes)
Best thing you could do is flash the stock rom first with odin, see how that feels (IMO its good been using it for months now) and then root it and back it up and flash CM12 (you dont have to flash any boatloader at this point)
grtz

Ok tried to flash Stock O2 UK lollipop ROM via ODIN and got error message on screen. MD5 too big or something. Had to pull battery on phone. Had to then reflash TWRP. Got back into TWRP and tried to do a recovery of the backup I took but phone is stuck at Galaxy note 4 screen. It then shuts down and restarts and gets to the same screen again.
Do I try a different ROM? What can I do?
Thanks

Is the bootloader on your phone locked? If it is, you can only install ROMs that are based on AT&T ROM.

Load the Samsung info app to confirm the bootloader version.

i337 came with 16 GB internal memory.
I am using OC3 based custom rom and I have 2.61 GB left in my internal memory.
You phone still might have old photos, music files, old system files there.
You need to backup and clean the old files (photo, music, document, etc..) before you start your new fresh installation.
I suggest you use flashfire to wipe the internal SD after you make backup of the data files to the computer.
After you do that your phone would not boot (soft-brick), so you need to install the NB1 firmware cooked by Muniz_ri via odin, root with towel root, install flashfire and install OC3 root rom via flashfire.
Then use flashfire to install lean custom rom. Install Titanium backup pro to freeze or uninstall the bloat ware too. You can follow the debloat guide for lollipop to uninstall the apps.
If you need firmware or rooted rom for my suggestion do let me know.

According to your spec your bootloader version is OC3. You can come back to OC3 or OC4 after you clean up the phone.
Like I said in my reply made in October, you need to back up every thing from the internal sdcard to the computer first.
Here is the step I mentioned in my previous post.
"You need to backup and clean the old files (photo, music, document, etc..) before you start your new fresh installation.
I suggest you use flashfire to wipe the internal SD after you make backup of the data files to the computer.

You can find the NB1 firmware cooked by muniz_rl at here.
That firmware is rootable with towel root. Get the towel root and root it. After the root, install the flashfire.
I could not find the OC3 bootloader so I suggest you flash the OC4 instead.
Here is the guide to flash OC4. The guide is updated for OK2 but you will be using the OC4 files instead. Just follow the steps.
Here is the OC4 bootlaoder.
Here is the OC4 rooted rom.
Here is the OC4 kernel. (You do not need it in the process, just to keep it handy for the future)
Once you are running OC4, you can install Titanium backup and freeze the bloatware. If you want to install the custom rom do let me know.

Info you gave me is enough.
If you phone die (brick), flashing the NB1 firmware via odin could save your phone.
Flashfire backup would restore the old system so I suggest you should not use the flashfire backup.
The back up is simple. Connect your phone to the computer via usb and copy and paste the data (photo, video, documents) to your computer.
Install the app like Netqin sync to backup your contact list. You can use google contact to backup your contact but it would mix the email and phone number.
Install the app like SMS backup to backup the sms message and phone logs.
Install the app like Titanium backup to backup the apps that you like to keep. (When you restore make sure to restore the app only. )

It sounds like you need to flash the OC3 firmware using your computer and a program called ODIN. No, you cannot boot any custom ROM you want. You can only boot custom touchwiz based ROMs because of the bootloader lock.
