Deleting preinstalled apps - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted motorola defy mini with stock gingerbread 2.3.6. Can I delete apps in the flex/app directory without corrupting android? Also, I deleted some stock apps and replaced them with downloaded apps. If I place them in the system/app directory will they be installed on the phone when I do a factory reset?

So I tried deleting a few apks and it didn't affect android in any way. I deleted all files containing moto or blur in the name and the phone is still working like it's supposed to. I also placed the launcher pro apk in the system/app directory and it was installed when I did a factory reset, so that also works for anyone who would like to do something like this

BlurAlarmClock....

Is there any way to install BlurAlarmClock after installing the EpicUnleashed 2.5 rom? I already tried putting the apk in my apps folder and changing the permissions but nothing seems to work.... thanks in advance!

Try to copy the current Clock.apk to your sdcard for a backup then delete it from your system/app folder and then install the other AlarmClock.apk. see if that works. I had the same problem when I was trying to install the D2Eye modded live wallpaper and it installed fine after I removed the original eye livewallpaper.

Finding Droid X bloatware files

Hey I have 2.2.1 Android version and 2.3.340 Sytem version on my Droid X and I need some help. When I first rooted my X I very quickly uninstalled all the bloatware that I didn't want bc I didn't know that you could just keep it and rename it. Now I have Root Explorer and I have the capability of renaming files, but I'm missing a TON of bloatware. Do any of you guys have link directing me towards a place where I can download those missing files? Thanks!

Did you make a backup before you. Started your install spree

Unfortunately, no. I'd already uninstalled a few apps before I made my first backup. Yeah, I know....stupid, right? Lol.

Lol I'm pretty new at all this but I'm sure you could find a stock rom and flash it on your dx. Search around. I'm sure your not the only
One whose done this. If not you can get the apks for em

I sent you a PM like 5 minutes after you posted this...

Okay, so I've got the file now that has all the stock droid x apps on it. I tried to copy and paste the apps from my sd card to system/apps. Unfortunately that crashed my phone and I had to flash back to my backup ROM. What did I do wrong?

you cant just copy the files over.
you need the apk and the odex files
then you need to change the permissions to rw-r-r and install it
then you need to reboot
i would SBF and start over renaming them to bak or try a custom ROM thats 10x better than stock like apex, darkslide or if you prefer ASOP then Liberty.
You'll have to excuse my ignorance, but what's sbf? Lol.

Oh, and after reading your helpful info on changing the permissions I still wasn't able to install some of the files. So, a few questions:
#1- What folder do I need the files to be in before I try to install the apps?
#2- Do the still end up in /system/app like all my other apps once I install them?
#3- Why would an app like for instance "friendfeed.apk" say "Aplication not installed" after I click on "install"? Bc that's what a lot of my apps are saying when I try to install them.
Please help! I'd rather install each of these apps 1 by 1, THEN rename them, instead of completely returning my phone to stock, customizing it (ringtones, apps, wallapapers), THEN rooting it again, installing the rest of the apps that I can't run without Superuser access, and THEN renaming all those files. Ugh, this is a pain in the butt. Please give me step by step instructions on how to do this (move "x" file and "y" file to folder "z", etc....). I'm a noob at this so I need it basic. Thanks!
Back up your contacts to your Google account and return your phone to stock. All your apps can be redownloaded from the "my apps" section of the market once you sign in w/ your Google account. Your contacts will also be resynced. It's a piece of cake. And rooting with z4root is so, so, so, easy.

Ugh....I was trying to avoid returning it to stock. I've got all my ringtones and stuff customized. Is there no way to leave my phone as is and just put the files back on there?
Also, would just doing a factory data reset put all the stock apps back on there? Or do I have to do more?

I accidentally deleted the Gingerbread music player....help.

I accidentally deleted the Gingerbread (.605) music player yesterday. I did the libjumper.so trick to put the Honeycomb 3.0 player on there and I accidentally overwrote the music.apk for gingerbread without making a copy. I supposedly found a copy if the apk and odex, but when I tried to install it....nothing showed up in the menu. I used root explorer to copy the apk and odex to system/app and I changed the permissions to rw-r-r then I rebooted the phone. That always seems to work when restoring system apps in the past but it isn't working this time. What am I doing wrong? And if I have the wrong apk and odex does anyone else have a link to the correct ones?

No idea what you might be doing incorrectly, but here...
http://www.chadhaney.com/droidXDefault/4.5.602/
When I clicked on that link I scrolled down to the music apk and odex. I clicked on them and it had a message on the page that they were downloading, but they weren't actually downloading. There was no download indicator at the top. Do you have another link?

[Q] /System/app seems to be full, what do i do?

I got stock Motoblur launcher for ICS&JB including Widgets, after I installed it, the launcher config disappeared and I tried copying HomeConfig.apk to /system/app and it said that it had no space left. I also wanted to copy some of the features from Razr M's MotoBlur and i cant because adb says that /system/app is at 100%.
I'll try with a fresh installation and see what happens.
Look at link2sd, but you need to be root on your device...

Try removing any built in apps that you are not using. I suppose you've been pushing a lot of stuff to system partition? Most apps (except launchers which need to put widgets) work just as well from data partition, afaik. Try moving some apps from /system/app/ to /data/app. But be careful, coz now you'll be able to uninstall them from Settings->Manage apps.

[Q] Manually installing system app, reboot, no .odex

I recently rooted my stock AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 (MF3) and have been implementing a few improvements that I've found on this thread but have run into a strange error twice already when trying to replace an existing system app with a modded version.
With other phones in the past I simply paste an app into system/app and set RW-R-R permissions, then reboot the phone. During the next boot it usually says "android is upgrading 1 of 1" and creates a matching .odex file in the /system/app folder and everything works perfect.
So far I've tried to replace the SecPhone.apk with a version that allows call recording, and the TetheringProvision.apk with one that will let me tether on my AT&T phone. In both instances I reboot, but it never says "upgrading", nor is an .odex file created, and then the app fails to work. With the TetheringProvision.apk I also kept getting a "failed to change permissions" error in ES File Explorer, so I retried with Root Explorer, and SMangager but none of them could change the permission on the apk once it was in the system/app folder (yes /system was mounted R/W). I'm not sure if this is related to the above problem or not.
Has anyone else had a similar issue? I have frozen most of the Samsung bloatware apps and while I've been careful, I suppose I could have accidentally frozen something important, but everything other than these replacement system apps seems to be working perfectly. I thought android automatically checked for new apps on every boot, but apparently not on my phone.
Is there any way to force an app check on boot? Thanks for the help.
So I guess no one else has had a similar issue...

You can not mod a rom that is odexed...period, unless it is made for odex.

Sorry, what do you mean by "period, unless it is made for odex"? Can you or can't you?

For an Odexed system, an Odex file is required to be installed along with the original file. So if a mod is created for an "Odexed" system, it will have a .odex file accompanying it that must be installed also. Installing a deodexed file into an odexed system doesn't work unless the deodexed file is split down into its 2 parts again (original file, plus .odex file)..
This was very helpful. Is there a guide you could recommend to me on how to make an odex file from the modded apk that I have so that I can get these programs working on my S4?
