Wipe after 4.4 update? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Questions in the update. Is it recommended? I'm running stock 4.3 and and wondering if I should factory reset after updating to 4.4.2 It's a habit that I've picked up from custom roms on my S3 and am wondering if you should wipe on stock. Thanks

You don't have a custom recovery on 4.2.2, only the stock recovery. If you do a wipe, factory reset, in the stock recovery it'll wipe your entire internal sdcard. So no, I would not do a wipe

Stock being stock Google?
Wipe data/factory reset,
Flash CM10,
Flash Franco.
Skip wiping caches altogether, no need to reboot in between flashing the ROM and the kernel.
If cm is already installed, you don't need to wipe anything if it's just the kernel. Just make sure you always have a recent nandroid

dont have to wipe anything, just flash it over.
note that when you flash a new nightly of cm, you will need to reflash the kernel.
Is there a list of supported devices somewhere so I can check to see if my LG E975 is supported?
Thanks!

Question about backups on the Nexus 4

I currently have a T989, which has an internal SD. Does the Nexus 4 have this as well? What I'm getting at is basically if I do a full wipe on the Nexus 4 and want to use for example ROM Toolbox or Titanium Backup to restore SMS and system settings, do these apps have somewhere to store this that isn't touched by doing a full wipe?
Thanks in advance.
With a custom recovery when you a factory reset it won't wipe your internal SD. With stock recovery it will wipe everything

Okay awesome. I use TWRP for everything.
Just do factory reset. TWRP warns you that doing a full wipe will remove everything. You can still recover from that, but it's a PITA.

D803, will I lose root if I factory reset?

I rooted using ioroot, flashed twrp with freegee. Just curious if I factory wipe will I lose root?
Also, is it best to factory reset from the settings menu or through twrp?
I'm used to running cwm on a gnex, so this is a whole new set or rules to learn...
Thanks!

Yesterday I was factory-reseting my D802 with Volume Down + Power buttons. After that it was still rooted. I suppose the same would be on D803 too. I don't know about custom recovery though, as I used stock one.

You will keep root after a factory reset.
I always factory reset in my recovery app. Simply custom wipe data and cache. Then wipe dalvik cache.
If you want to flash a new ROM, just custom wipe system, data and cache. Then wipe dalvik cache.

[Q] flashing custom rom over stock

I am running a rooted/unlocked xt907 but the rom is stock.
I have never before flashed a custom rom. i have twrp installed.
what is the best way to accomplish this? also what are some of the pitfalls?
thanks for dealing with my noob questiopn
Back up important app data with Titanium Backup, wipe /data, /cache and /system, and flash away clean. Dirty flashing is never recommended when jumping between ROMs.

none
so basically i will have to wipe the entire phone (including the stock rom) in order to flash a new rom?
Yes. If you are changing ROMs, you need to wipe. You can dirty flash when updating the same ROM.

Android 5.1 Update

Hi, So the Android 5.1 OTA is finally available for N4, I'm rooted with custom recovery and was wondering how can I flash the OTA?
I know a way which I should unroot and install stock recovery, but other than this is there any way?
Backup data, Wipe factory data and flash OTA update from custom recovery.

You can't flash an ota in a custom recovery. You can only flash it by sideloading in the stock recovery.
PO, you have to be 100 % stock, system, kernel and recovery to flash the ota. It's just as easy to flash the 5.1 factory image.

I always just flash the factory image. As jd1639 says, it's just as easy. And you don't have to go to the trouble of returning to stock. Just make sure you don't wipe out your data, unless that's what you want to do.
so to flash ota i would neet to loose data and go to stock right?
is there factory image i could use without going to stock then? Thanks

If you're on 5.0.1, flash the system, boot, and recovery images with fastboot from it. Boot into recovery and sideload the ota with adb. You shouldn't lose any data. Then re-Root.
