[Q] flashing custom rom over stock - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running a rooted/unlocked xt907 but the rom is stock.
I have never before flashed a custom rom. i have twrp installed.
what is the best way to accomplish this? also what are some of the pitfalls?
thanks for dealing with my noob questiopn

Back up important app data with Titanium Backup, wipe /data, /cache and /system, and flash away clean. Dirty flashing is never recommended when jumping between ROMs.

none
so basically i will have to wipe the entire phone (including the stock rom) in order to flash a new rom?

Yes. If you are changing ROMs, you need to wipe. You can dirty flash when updating the same ROM.

Before flashing any rom including Omega you should do a full wipe in recovery for best results.
Omega rom does NOT delete everything from your device, none of the custom roms do that.
Good luck and be sure to wipe before flashing...................

If you wipe it all then all is gone from internal sd.
But you have to full wipe for good result..
You should root the stock rom and backup all user apps with TITANIUM BACKUP and then wipe and flash Omega rom.
After flash you just inatall TITANIUM BACKUP again and restore all from backup...

[Q] Trouble With Flashing CM10.2 and Wrong Kernel

So I was running CM10.1 nightlies with Franco Kernel and decided to make the jump to CM10.2. The ROM and gApps flash went just fine, but like a dummy, I flashed the version of Franco kernel that I'd been using before, which I guess is not compatible with 4.3. The phone seemed to be softbricked and would just hang at the Cyanogen boot animation. I can get into recovery and I've tried to reflash both CM10.1 and CM10.2 - both hang at the boot animation. I can go back to my stock backup just fine, but then when I try to flash CM again (either version), I have the same hanging problem. Does CM store like a memory of the kernel that you have flashed and try to revert to that? Why can't I flash CM again once I've gone back to stock (and the stock kernel)? Would reflashing the stock image fresh (rather than using a TWRP backup) change anything? I'm pretty inexperienced with this and would appreciated any help. Thanks in advance!

Just to be sure how much juice was left while you were flashing CM rom?? Reading your problem I would suggest you to do a fresh Stock image installation and then try flashing CM 10.2.
Have you tried restoring your NANDROID backup, if you made one??

I have restored the NANDROID backup successfully, but unfortunately I was lazy and only have the backup from when I first got the phone.
I backed everything up with Titanium Backup right before I tried to flash CM10.2. If I do a complete stock reflash, do I lose all the data I backed up with TB? I do have some app data that I would really like to keep if possible.
One other resort I thought of was flashing a different custom ROM (Paranoid Android maybe?) and then restoring my TB backup. Would there be any reason that I shouldn't be able to reflash CM after I've restored the stock NANDROID?

Try this.
As you are able to go in recovery,
Wipe cache , dalvik cache, system, data install PA 3.97 flash pa_gapps then supersu v1.51(for root, also enable app+adb from developer option)
wipe cache and dalvck again and reboot..
P.S : Charge your battery first to 80% minimum and flash the rom.
If the above doesn't help,
Backup all you valuable data into pc, backup app+data through TB move it to pc and flash the factory image through fastboot.

I ended up flashing the stock image and completely wiping all data. I then tried to install CM10.2 again and it still hung at the CM boot animation for about 15 minutes. It shouldn't take that long to flash, right?

[Q] Wiping question

I have been flashing different ROMs and mods here lately and have come upon a situation I cant figure out. I wiped cache, dalvik and wipe for flashing new rom options multiple times and when I flash the stock rooted deodexed rom I have bits and pieces of previous flashed mods/roms left. It also seems to vary between reboots. One reboots leftovers from before will be different from the next reboots. Can someone explain to me or point me the right direction to how I should thoroughly wipe so the next flash is really a fresh install? Im using the latest Philz recovery if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance!
When flashing new ROMs it is recommended to wipe System, Data, Cache, and Dalvik.
You can manually format these in the mounts menu.
Or you can use the option to clean install a new ROM, which will wipe all necessary partitions.

Thanks but that's what I have been doing. I have been manually formatting AND doing the clean install option. That's why I cant understand getting leftover pieces, it should be wiped clean. Im wondering if I need to change recovery to wipe. Ive been having fits with Philz doing restores from backups also. Maybe I need to hit it with a hammer and dig the old OG Evo back out.
You can try formating/wiping with TWRP and use the rm-rf option.
OR
Better still if you really want to wipe everything why not flash the official Sprint .tar to MF9.
Then root, install custom recovery (via GooManager or Odin) and go from there.
Im thinking the official .tar file maybe the way to go. I'll try it in the am. One question... Im on 4.3 so I need to find a .tar for the updated software right? I thought I read about once on MJA you couldn't go back to Mf9. Thanks!

[Q] ROM Downgrading nexus 4

Hello everyone, I am a newbie in flashing ROM's rooting etc.
I am currently running on CM11 on my nexus 4 with android version 4.4.4 . I want to flash a CM11 based rom for my nexus 4 which is 4.4.2. Do I need to wipe data before flashing it?
ROM LINK THAT I AM GOING TO FLASH http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/development/rom-xl-z1-rom-v2-0-xperia-z1-style-t2630043
Thanks in advance!!
Make a nandroid backup of your current ROM and flash the new ROM after wiping cache, Dalvik, and system. If the phone bootloops, wipe the data in recovery. If the phone then boots, you know that some of the apps may not be compatible.
Thanks

Another option would be to use titanium back-up user apps, wipe data and then flash new rom. (definently shoul do an nandroid regardless)

flashed images from 6.0 to 6.0.1

Did something change within the framework?
I did not wipe date...I flashed new radio, bootloader, wiped and flashed cache, flashed boot, system, and vendor.
My phone booted up fine, but all exsisting apps all force close.
Did I do something wrong?
I was coming from a custom rom (pure nexus) and flashing the stock images...maybe thats where the hiccup is?
for now I am just restoring my backup.
Waiting for someone to come up with a flashable stock 6.0.1 ROM, hopefully, so I can keep my apps/settings and do a dirty flash.

That was definitely the problem. If you don't wipe data and flash the stock ROM over the top you'll encounter issues.
