Stock being stock Google?
Wipe data/factory reset,
Flash CM10,
Flash Franco.
Skip wiping caches altogether, no need to reboot in between flashing the ROM and the kernel.

If cm is already installed, you don't need to wipe anything if it's just the kernel. Just make sure you always have a recent nandroid

dont have to wipe anything, just flash it over.
note that when you flash a new nightly of cm, you will need to reflash the kernel.

Is there a list of supported devices somewhere so I can check to see if my LG E975 is supported?
Thanks!

Factory Reset

In my small small experience, All Stock Roms (as listed by dr.ketan, somewhere else in this forum) after flashing thru PCOdin are safe for Factory Reset/Wipe data and Wipe Cache Partition. Only after that Abyss Kernel should be flashed. However after flashing leaked ICS Roms thru CWM should not be Factory Res/Wipe Data and Wipe Cache Partition. Please correct me whatsoever, if am wrong and suggest. Thanks.

You can "Factory Res/Wipe Data and Wipe Cache Partition." on ICS ROMS if you first flash the abyss kernel. DON'T EVER factory reset/wipe on stock kernels.
Also why would you flash leaked ics roms when Samsung released OFFICIAL roms?
wiping on Stock ICS kernel can be fatal to your phone ,be very careful ,flash the latest franco kernel ,or speed mode kernel as they are safe to wipe from and can function perfectly with ICS ROMs from samsung.

So on franco's kernel we can wipe, backup, restore, etc as we normally would using cwm?
I think after rooting, No Factory reset. By the way what is the thump rule? When to Factory reset and when we should not?
There's no rule as such.
Use safe kernel and do whatever you please, just make sure you are on safe kernel when you play with recovery.

on latest franco and speed mode kernel ,and pretty much any kernel that has MMC_CAP_ERASE disabled ,it's safe to do what ever you want
just make sure you are on such a safe kernel first ,people have bricked because they thought they were on a safe kernel when in fact they weren't.

thumb rule is to be on a safe kernel ,and then do what ever you want.

*Kernel flashing question *

When flashing to a new kernel, do I need to write my device or can I just flash from where I am? Currently I'm on matr1x kernel and I want to go to Franko's kernel. I was planning on wiping the dalvik cache but not factory reset. I'd rather not lose all my apps and settings if I can help it. Any ideas?

Just wipe cache and dalvik and your set to go!

You don't need to factory reset when flashing kernels just wipe cache and dalvik and you'll be fine. Note it might take a little longer to boot because it will be building up cache since you just wiped it.
No need to wipe anything. No cache or dalvik needed either. You just flash and boot!
BUT! When you are using a custom kernel that uses custom ramdisk (ex. Franco), you need to flash the kernel from your ROM first. (I usually just backup only my boot image in TWRP so I can go back and forth between kernels) If you don't, the phone might not boot (will boot to bootloader, which in that case, you can fix the problem)
Also, make sure that you don't overclock too much and expect bugs from nightly releases (a lot of kernels are in nightly version right now, but Franco seems to reach milestone soon). You might not experience any bugs, but you never know.
you should be able to do that
if it is just a zip, you should be able to flash it right across in the recovery.
I just did that an hour ago, it kept everything except the kernel.

[Q] What do I need to do when I just update my ROM?

I have ParanoidAndroid 3.15 installed along with Trinity kernel.
I want to update it to ParanoidAndrodid 3.60.
Do I need to wipe everything and then proceed flashing the ROM, gapps and the kernel or I just wipe cache and then flash the updated ROM?
-sorry if i made some mistakes. English is not my primary language.
Flash ROM gapps kernel wipe caches reboot

Did you try it? I'm pretty paranoid about my Nexus 4, I don't want to brick it.

That's how you update any ROM. If you want to do a clean install then do a factory reset flash ROM gapps and kernel reboot. Kernel is optional
From my BLACKED OUT N4
if youre updating a rom, a dirty flash is fine(without wiping anything), just flash the updated rom, gapps, kernel, and any other mods you use. when installing a rom, your cache/dalvik automatically get wiped, so no need to do it during a dirty flash. if you are installing a new rom, then you have to wipe data(factory reset).

[Q] Solved.

Hello,
I have looked quite a bit, but I can't find anything to help (perhaps I'm using the wrong search terms or something). The problem I keep running into is that, even with wiping cache, dalvik cache, and data/factory reset, gapps keeps on coming back. I've flashed the latest CM11 nightly, the latest Purity, and the latest BS Harmony, all without flashing gapps, but when it boots up, sure enough, gapps are there. Why are gapps still there, and what can I do to get rid of them?
Thank you in advance!

Yes because it has backup system yo backup gapps, if you want to get rid of gapps, go to mounts and storage on cwm and do format system, and then flash cm11 or other rom

If I'm not mistaken, some devs do add some gapps into their roms. Not all of them mind you. Also when you do a factory reset via the recovery, it doesn't wipe the system partition. Most roms will wipe it when it (rom) is flashed, so gapps from previous roms wouldn't or shouldn't be there.

Do flashing kernels and wiping cache wipe data?

Hi, I own a Nexus 4, just a quick nooby question..
Will flashing a custom kernel (thinking of Faux or Franco) and wiping cache and dalvik wipe data? The main reason I want to flash a custom kernel is to underclock to save battery life, and do these have profiles so I can leave it on low clock over night and normal clock during the day?

Same answer, you don't need to wipe anything in recovery if you're flashing a kernel. And wiping cache and dalvik will not wipe your data
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
you never ever have to wipe anything when flashing kernels. never. wiping dalvik/cache before flashing a kernel is the same as wiping your butt to fill your car up with gas. its just not needed. and for all those that write it in their op, they just dont know better.
