Best way (in my opinion) is to root that device, flash a new recovery and install a new firmware (ROM). For a Galaxy S2 its fairly easy since it has a huge userbase and is therefore good supported. Here you can find guides for all the necessary steps http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/general
Nice side effect: You get rid of all the unuseful (in my eyes) stuff TMobile bakes into their ROMs.
I personally would suggest you try one of the Android 4.4 ROMs (I personally only know Cyanogenmod and OmniROM), they are running stable, fast and have the latest Android version.
Of course you can also stick to original unbranded Samsung ROMs which include the tethering functionality without limitations.
However, TMobile claims to implement different optimizations for their net in their ROMs. You would lose these optimizations until you go back to a TMobile branded ROM.

[Discussion] Stock or Custom ROMs

Well with all the hype going on about custom (and sometimes stock) firmwares. I thought I would start a discussion and Perhaps a poll to see if you are using stock or custom ROMs.
As for my 2 cents: Samsung makes great hardware (at least to my experience) but sinks it down to sleep with the fishies with poor software support including bad very bad software suites (like Kies or Media studio the latter which installed a nasty rootkit on my laptop believe it or not for DRM), prematurely axing support to its newly launched devices (I remember hacking my samsung MP3 with korean firmware as I was really angry at samsung for axing the device 2 months after its release whats up with that ).
So what about you: Do u use custom ROMs or stick to late to almost never released stock ROMs?
Stock rom.
It does what I want. Internet-games-programs. It is fast and good.
I do not see a reason to go with a custom rom.
I use modaco. because its sooooo fast.
Overcome. Hands down the best rom/kernel IMHO.

okay ... dumb question ... i've just ordered a Tab from T-Mobile, should have it Monday or Tuesday, so ... just what is a custom ROM/Kernal going to do for me?
Thanks,
pat----
Im sticking with stock atm...
As posted above, it does what i want.
Im on Overcome 1.3, undervolted, not overclocked
what it does for you is it removes bloatware, includes fixes to known bugs that samsung has not addressed with a proper firmware update, allows for overclocking and undervolting if you're into that, formats the file system to EXT4 making IO faster, installs a full backup and restore facility from recovery, and provides better battery life*
quadrant score from original firmware: 1000-1200
quadrant score from Overcome 1.3 no overclock: 1690
so yeah, custom IS better than stock until samsung gets all these tweaks into their official ROMs.
(*I don't know how it does that, but it does )
It should be said that in reality the split isn't just between stock and custom, but stock, "unreleased', and custom.
Most of the custom ROMs you can find here are based on Samsung's own unreleased test/dev builds (e.g. MoDaCo is based on JMI, Overcome is based on JMK). Even in their "raw" form, these unreleased ROMs are far better than those that actually ship on the device (BEWARE LOCKED BOOTLOADERS IF YOU ARE THINKING OF FLASHING ONE!!!).
If you take say Rotohammers build, it is stock JMI (JMK now?), without the locked bootloaders and pre-rooted. MoDaCo and Overcome go quite a bit further as they have completely rebuilt kernels and are tweaked for speed. Then you have Technomancers Gingerbread ROM, which is completely custom and based on CM7 rather than an existing Samsung build.
In my opinion, staying on a shipping Tab ROM means you are not getting as much out of your device as you could. Even the Samsung unreleased dev builds are way better than the shipping ROMs, so I don't know why Samsung haven't actually formally released them.
Regards,
Dave
I user overcome 1.4.4
Its much faster than the stock rom and seems to use less battery power in my particular use case.
Custom, as indicated in my signature. I have a T-Mobile Tab and in stock form, it was extremely slow. It sucked.
chicken roms is better ever
For those who say stock is fine i say you have no idea what you are missing. Try both, then make a decision. Custom all the way baby!
T-Mobile tab running latest Overcome
As a bell mobility tab user, i used the stock one (jj3) i think for about a month.
After that i decided to go with roto jme then jmg and after that went to modaco.
Was on modaco for about the last 3 months and i have decided to flash overcome.
There is a significant speed difference between modaco and overcome. I noticed lag in angry birds seasons with modaco but with overcome, barely any.
I am happy with flashing a custom Rom and would never go back to stock.
If only i could get a copy of the stock Rom just in case of any issues.
Hope that helps.

The hardware is superb but it's let down badly by Samsung in not keeping it up to date with firmwares.
Using Custom roms solves this and provides an all round quality tablet so, yeah, custom roms for me.
I use a stock rom for now, but once my download for Overcome is done, I'll switch to it.

Read the guides before flashing.
I had stock. It was excellent, good multi-language support, excellent hardware support.
Tried MoDaCo. Lost most of language support. Hardware support only for the basic stuff.
Replaced with Overcome. Language support even sketchier. Battery performance awful. Hardware support still only basic stuff.
Tried going back to stock. I could not find the stock firmware that was originally available on the device. All «stock» firmwares in the wild had the same issues as the MoDaCo and Overcome. I was shocked and seriously puzzled!
Went to the repair shop and asked them to flash the device with the original.
- Two days later I was told, that they need some special cable to flash the device, and it's going to take a week to get it from Korea(!).
- One week later I was told, that the device needed motherboard replacement.
- One more week later I got the device.
Now my device has Excellent language support, but still fails to report Neighbouring GSM Cells.
Eventually I installed a Winblows in a VM (Bleh!) to try Kies.
To my greatest surprise after eventually connecting Kies says that my device is 'Not Upgradeable'.
So my adventure with custom firmwares is MOST unfortunate.
My ¢2: new users should NOT replace firmware unless they BADLY need something that SUPPOSEDLY a custom firmware would give.

Can you please elaborate more what do you mean by "hardware support", what would be the difference between "basic stuff" and "excellent"?
AFAIK, the custom ROMS are based on stock ROM, thus I can't understand there will be any difference over hardware support level.
With custom ROMs you are more free!

I did. I ended up installing Rotohammer's instead, though. It works fine.

[Q] How to retain pre-installed apps when flashing custom rom

I hope this is not a totally dumb question as I am new to Android phones:
There are some good apps that come with the note as standard like S Memo and also some Samsung specific things like S Choice. How do I keep these when I upgrade to a custom Rom.
I looked as Astro file manager back up capability, and it doesn't list these there.
Would Titanium backup list them and allow me to save them for re-installation?
Thanks
Chris
You can't really keep them on a non-Samsung ROM as they depend on the Touchwiz framework. Sorry :'-(

are u going to be flashing an ICS rom or staying on Gingerbread? you will not be able to use any pre-installed apps if you are flashing ICS rom. But if you're flashing a GB rom (rocket rom v23, checknote etc) then you can use Titanium Backup but most GB roms come with smemo, splanner, etc. Hope this helped.

Thanks for those replies guys, it's actually really helpful for a newbe like me. I need to explaore the standard apps a bit more to see what's good and whether I need a substitute for any.
I was thinking of flashing an ICS ROM, but I need to explore which one is the best.
If I loose the S.Memo app, that seems really good, is there a substitue in the market? Of all the apps that utilises the pen, that would seem to be the key one!
Your advice is appreciated.
I'm using a modified version of MyScript Notes Mobile which I think works perfect for handwriting notes. Get it here (and thank the guy who modified it in that thread ): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594325
It's in American/English only but if you need any other language you can download a language pack with 28 additional languages here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426975
I'm not sure if the ICS roms based on the leaked Samsung firmwares have all the s-pen apps but I'm sure just about any custom GB rom here is based on original Samsung firmwares and thus include all Samsung apps (unless explicitly mentioned in the thread that they were removed ofcourse).
You can still use your pen in ICS roms that are not based on Samsung firmwares though you'll lose pressure sensitivity. If you feel like you'll need pressure sensitivity you could flash a rom based on LP6.

[Q] Where did all the stocklike roms go??

I have been looking for a samsung like rom, there were tons of them available now it's all stock google 4.4 and some 4.3, I just want real stability, unfortunately this is android indeed, and I understand that stability is not something to look for, but I have been with android all my life and the stock rom for my s4 was extremely stable, I am just looking now for one like that but I cannot find anymore. Right when the phone came out there were tons of ROMS off of the samsung stock (deoxed and such) now its all stock google, where can I find really a really stable ROM for my i337m s4, been looking for weeks, nothing cuts the cake, sorry for english, not first language, and thanks for anyone who help me!
Many of the ROMs located in the android development subforum will be based on the stock firmwares. These include ROMs such SD GoldenEye, Graviton, Hyperdrive, etc.

[Q] Verizon Note 3 Cyanogenmod Question

I am brand new to these boards and usually don't ask questions. I am pretty tech savvy but cannot code or anything like that. I don't mind rooting a phone and flashing a custom ROM. I am currently using the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon and love having pretty much stock android but the phone is starting to feel slow. I want to upgrade to the Note 3 because I love the hardware specs. However, I hate what Samsung did to it with TouchWiz. I don't really have time to debug or troubleshoot a ROM. My question revolves around the Cyanogenmod build for this phone. I read that they release a nightlie for it but when you go to the webpage its not listed as an available device. Does this mean that they are still working on an "official version"? I would like to get the phone as close to AOSP as possible and have it fully functional. I understand that all the Samsung stuff will be removed which I am fine with. This is probably basic to most of you but any guidance on what my best option would be greatly appreciated.
There are official nightlies, but only for the Developer Edition phone. The Verizon Retail version has a locked bootloader and can only flash ROMs with a stock kernel.
The DE (unlocked bootloader) is only available from Samsung, and is currently out of stock/backordered. EBay or Swappa are about the only way to come by one now.
what cam30era said.
If you want a full custom ROM that only functions correctly by using a custom kernel, you will need to buy a developer edition Note 3, not a retail device. This is a consequence of the fact that the VZW retail Note 3 has security protections that (have not been circumvented at this time and) prevent the booting of custom kernels.
It is my understanding that CM11 needs kernel features that are not present in the retail, stock (MI9, MJ7, or MJE) kernels. Whether this causes bootloops, UI framework crashes, or something more minor (loss of some functionality) I don't know.
My guess is there will be little motivation for CM11 to "officially" add the VZW Note 3 as long as it's secure boot locks remain un-hacked, as there aren't many dev-ed owners.
[OFFICIAL] CyanogenMod for DEVED VZW Note 3 (HLTEVZW) [2014-01-11]
good luck
In my experience, most of the time, stock based ROMs run faster with better battery life over AOSP anyway.. but I've seen exceptions.

Best Vanilla/Nexus style ROM for the Note 4 (N910F)

Hi all, I'm trying to find a ROM which is most like untouched standard Android (Like what you'd get on a Nexus device); this sort of ROM used to be referred to as 'Vanilla' but may also be know as Nexus or Google Play Edition.
I played with my friends new Moto X yesterday and the OS was so much faster and responsive than my phone, in my opinion. Furthermore, I prefer the aesthetics of the standard ROM; I know Motorola ROM's aren't completely free of changes but they are certainly a lot more uncustomised than Samsung with all its additions and customisations which I really hate the look of and find my phone gets laggy quickly unless a restart is performed.
I have extensive experience loading custom ROM's but I don't want to have to try all of them, I was hoping you may be able to help me find a ROM which matches my requirements. The addition of S Pen apps/compatibility would be awesome but I can obviously look into adding this myself if the ROM does not natively support it.
Thanks community!

If you just want plain standard nexus type rom them you just want plain cm from the original development section. There are a few versions of cm with added tweaks around as well but cm roms are pretty much only available for the qualcom n4 plus every cm rom will have a couple of bugs

note 4 910f best stable rom pie
im a newbie can you help please.
Did you find a rom that worked for samsung note 4 n910F marhmallow to pie? blutooth and camera ok?
A shop did this for me they tried twice but though android pie worked when I switched the fone off.. power off from the shutdown menu at end of day.... it wouldnt reastart at all. They gave up and reloaded samung marsmallow again which its running now.
As a newbie id appreciate knowng how and in which order you did this. Im thinking odin on computor, root fone to take nandroid copy twrp
If I end up with the same problem as the shop ie no restart, could I obtain and load an original samsung ver 5 or 6 android, as this would be easier than rooting the fone in order to make a nandroid copy.
THANK YOU !!! april 2020.
