KitKat performance problems - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
After the kitkat update some months ago, the performance of my nexus 2012 was drastically decreased! Old version (jb) was much more fluid, and fast..
This is normal??
Also, sometimes I get an exchange services error...
I tried a factory reset , but didnt solved.
Thanks.
Android 4.4.2 - Nexus 2012 32GB Wifi

Yea.I agree. I'm actually having low fps problems. I tried running all stock rooms from 4.1.2 until 4.4.2 but still have this low fps problem.

We are the only with a worst performance in kk?
No more people?

How much free space do you have on your internal memory? I'm testing SlimKat 3 and it flies on my N7.

4.1 vs 4.2

I`ve read a lot of post that say 4.1 is much smoother and faster then 4.2. I've never tried 4.1 is this true?
Yep but that's my opinion, all the Devs will tell you there's been all sorts of probs with 4.2 and kernel related as well. Certainly faster but just lately 4.21 seems smoother then 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 . I've been using rasbean on my gnex and I lv it. The two fastest for me is bugless and baked!!
But I'll keep with rasbean coz its so smooth and great with Franco's kernel !!!!!

4.2 adds features and not speed improvement, also 4.1 has been out longer so it has had more time to be improved upon.

4.1 was pretty smooth and 4.2 lagged and glitches like none other for me. I am currently running 4.2.1 and it seems a lot smoother than 4.1 and gives me a lot of cool new features. Also I noticed if I restart my tablet everyday or every other day it runs buttery smooth.

4.2.1 seems to be smoother
True, 4.1 also has better battery life
Depends on who you ask. I took mine out of the box on 4.1 and waited about a week to install the 4.2 update, and didn't see a difference in smoothness, performance or battery life. Since updating my battery life has increased a bit, but as it wasn't immediate I associate it more with the battery going through several cycles than the update.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Personally I find that 4.1 gives me more battery life. Everything else feels very similar. I rolled back to 4.1.2 in order to use directory bind to play and store my large games from USB stick as 4.2 was having issues.
I love 4.2, esspecially the multi-user function.
4.1 was definitely smoother. 4.1.1 is best JB IMHO. 4.1.2 introduced scrolling bug (when you scroll through home screens and it doesn't detect swipe correctly but instead returns to previous screen). 4.2 was a catastrophy, 4.2.1 is slightly better but still 4.1.1 rulez...
I've never upgraded past 4.1.2 which is fast and gives very good battery life. The multiple users added in Jellybean 4.2.1 seems a useless complication with the price of tablets falling so fast. At the new $100 to $150 price range everyone will have their own tablet.
It also depends on the kernel with what settings and what rom you're using. I use PA 2.99b9.5 w/ m-kernel a28. And it is super responsive and great on battery life.

they should make an update that saves battery like 4.1 and has both 2 notification bars and multi-user function.
There are a few ROMs with multi user options slim is one of them

Nexus 7(2012) still bad performance with 4.3

Hey guys,
I installed 4.3 (stock) on my nexus and hoped that it would improve the performance but was not good at all. Then I tried paranoid Android and it still lags so bad. Do you experience the same?

Nope
What do you mean about bad performance? Do you have any quantitative data or just a qualitative?

Then it won't be a hassle to factory reset it. I just did mine, and it's flying again, before it was laggy as hell.
Apps you remove leave stuff behind, eventually it gets cluttered, what can you do.
How many do you get in Quadrant benchmark?

Hi, gsindl00...
Jellybean 4.3 build JWR66Y (stock rooted) is running great on my Nexus 7... no lag at all.
A question... how much free space do you have left on the internal storage of your Nexus 7?
I ask because a recent experience of mine occurred that may have some bearing on your problem.
I have a 16 Gb WiFi only 'grouper' Nexus 7... but only 13.24 Gb is available to the the user.
Now, at frequent intervals I make Nandroid backups using TWRP. These backups take up significant space, routinely clocking in at around 2.5 Gb's. Due to their size, and for this reason, I only ever keep two backups on my Nexus 7 at any one time - an 'untouched, unmodified and unrooted' backup of factory stock, should I wish to quickly (for whatever reason) restore back to pure factory (without having to pull out my laptop and resort to fastboot)... this backup clocks in at around 600 Mb. This backup never gets deleted, and remains constantly on my Nexus 7.
The second Nandroid backup is a backup of my current setup, and frequently gets deleted and made anew, roughly once a month.
Several days ago, I created a new Nandroid, BUT FORGOT TO DELETE MY OLD ONE. As I have already mentioned, these backups are quite large, and with everything else on my Nexus 7 (pics, movie clips and music), this pushed my available user space down to 1.27 Gb.
This very low available user space had a significantly deleterious effect on the performance of my Nexus 7.
After booting the device, the white-on-black Google screen would appear (as normal), after which, the pulsing luminescent 'X' boot animation would then seemingly take forever to appear, and then hesitantly (as though the device was struggling to boot).
Anyway, it did boot and upon success, my widgets (I have several), would all have to reload again, which took a good half minute or so. Normally, they just appear on the Nova launcher desktop instantly. Several reboots later, and the lag and slow boot persisted, as well as the slow loading of widgets.
This peculiar behavior went on for several days... I couldn't understand it!
I was on the verge of restoring back to stock, when I remembered the undeleted Nandroid backup.
So, booting into TWRP, I deleted the old Nandroid backup, and for good measure, I wiped Cache and Dalvik cache.
Upon reboot, I discovered I had a more healthy 4.9Gb of user space available, and the lag was gone.
Anyway, my point is this (and it really has nothing to with Nandroids or TWRP)... make sure you have at least 4Gb of free space on your device. Delete stuff you don't need (or backup to your PC), and occasionally use a cache cleaner like Clean Master.
Also, if you have TWRP installed, clearing out Cache and Dalvik Cache sometimes helps.
----------------------------------
Since Jellybean 4.3, fstrim/discard has been fully implemented (it was always there in 4.2.2, but it wasn't enabled). Under 4.3, fstrim/discard now runs regularly, but only under certain conditions...
QUOTE- "The folks at AnandTech mention how TRIM will run when your tablet is idle with the screen off and sitting with a battery life of 70 percent or greater. The issue with the previous model Nexus 7 is that while TRIM support has been around since Android 4.2 — it wasn’t enabled. And regardless of how good a feature can be, if it is turned off then it will not do anything."
SOURCE -http://androidcommunity.com/nexus-7-2012-getting-performance-boost-with-android-4-3-update-20130729.
See also here for more technical and interesting info on 'fstrim'.
So, 'fstrim' is now part of Jellybean 4.3... and will run at regular intervals, providing the battery is above 70% and the Nexus 7 is 'sleeping'. But there's nothing to stop you from running 'fstrim' yourself with this app. Particularly after you've JUST deleted some really big files. You will need to be rooted of course.
Right... apologies for the length of this post... just wanted to reference my own experiences in the hope it might help.

Disable the bloatware Apps that you don't need/use like Google currents.
Throw on ASOP Browser. I believe that needs root to install, but IMHO that browser smokes Chrome.
IDK disabling bloat and using a better browser definitely changed my opinion about the N7 being slow.
Also Google around, there's different tips and tweaks to make your N7 perform better, but with those 2 tips above I saw immediate results for the better...

AOSP browser without root.
Although on a Nexus 4 forum, I can (as can others) report it works great on the Nexus 7 as well. Only downside is, I've never been able to get Adobe Flash Player to work with it.

performance issues
Im a noob, but a CM 10.2 nightly with the latest Franco kernel, then flash the jubei test script gave me a significant boost in performance. Made the thing useable again in my book.
Try setting governor in kernel to performance. Makes a huge difference for me. I don't use my tablet enough in a day to kill it. Gets over 4 hours screen on time.

Android 2.3 on Nexus 4

Come on guys, think about it. It would be so fast.
Has someone made a GB ROM for the Nexus 4? I bet it would be wicked fast and smooth compared to other ROMs with higher Android versions. Is there anything that holds it back from getting GB?

This is ridiculous. KK is more optimized than previous versions. JB is faster on my vibrant than when it was on older versions. My N4 is significantly more responsive on KK than JB. Going backwards will fix nothing.

Is kit kat on your N4 not messing up the responsiveness of your home and back keys? It lags so bad for me, and location services take longer on 4.4 for me. Idk why.

It'd be slow, the newer version are much more optimized, you can test web browsing with GB vs JB.
If you want to use GB, get an original Galaxy Note and use Odin to flash it back to Gingerbread. That was one of my favorite phone and one of the last phone Samsung made with decent build quality, imo (here come the Samsung fanboys).
If home button lags for you, try a different browser.

You don't think the Galaxy S5 has good build quality? The Galaxy note was more of a square brick than a phone imo. I think GB would fly through every benchmark and be way better in real world performance than JB or Kit Kat.

First off, going back to GB is just silly. Not only will GB been slower than kit kat, it is also ugly as hell in comparison, with half the functionality, plus many google apps need android 4.0+ to get their full functionality.
Kit kat runs faster than anything else on the nexus 4, especially with ART on. If you get lags/issues, then something else went wrong, most likely in the way you upgraded. I suggest you flash the factory images through fastboot.

ics from samsung?, the wors optimized android is 1.6 on htc g1, it was 2x more slower then 1.5 on dat device
Ps: is not lag like u running android on a 200mhz device, but its some little lags like samsung roms have.(who used s3 with ics knows what i mean).
Ps2: "Kit kat runs faster than anything else on the nexus 4, especially with ART on. If you get lags/issues, then something else went wrong, most likely in the way you upgraded. Lag is always relative to the individual person. Something that is considered smooth and "lag free" may seem the opposite to someone else.

It was behaving erratic for me too until I started with a clean slate. Backup your data, let the factory image flash do its job and voila, fast Kitkat.

Nexus 10 lags with every custom rom

Hey,
I got my N10 about 1 Month ago and it ran really fast and smooth in the beginning but when time went by it got slower and laggy. So i rooted it and installed CM11. There I had lag in the launcher, so i couldnt even scroll smoothly through the app drawer. I had the same problems with ThunderKat, AOKP ... The only time it runs without lag is, when i flash an original factory image. Then it runs smooth for like 2 days and it begins to become slow again.
It really pisses me of, that my N10 only runs fast when I have stock unrooted KitKat installed.. I thought its Hardware is more than capable of making the Device run smooth.
Has anyone an advice for me, how I can make it smooth again? Or which Custom Rom runs lag free for them, because I prefer Custom Roms over Googles Stock rom.
Sorry for my bad english and thanks for all answers.
Regards
I try not to make it my business to suggest which ROM is better for reason x or reason y so I won't, but I will say that you should not be having lag issues on most ROMs, even stock as this device can handle a lot.
That being said the issue more than likely lies in some bad apps you have installed, this or some mods that have been made that are working against you.
My n10 is actually my wife's so I don't mess with it much, but I will say there rarely is lag if ever on it. Currently I have her running the latest slimbean for the past few months and I'm sure eventually I'll put KitKat on there for her but she is more than happy with the performance as of right now.
So start by looking into apps that may be causing lag as with the limited info here I assume this is your issue

I get lag using Nova Launcher these days, it seems to have happened with recent updates. I have tried lots of different ROMs and kernels it persists across them all. Even the new GE Launcher seems slow.
When using apps I don't notice any lag. It is just a launcher thing for me.
Same here but I also see some lag in scrolling in apps like xda and Facebook. But that's normal. It still works great for games and apps though my brother completely destroyed my battery. I can only get like 5 hours now and the standby used to drain 1-2 percent a day now drains that much in an hour. Sorry went a little off topic there in the ned

Hi,
When my tablet started feeling really laggy I fully formatted it, installed stock KitKat, and then installed CM11 with the KK GAPPS, so far it's quite fast and performs really well. You may want to search for then"perfect ROM" for you, I can only tell you that I'm using CM11 and having a good time with it. Also using NOVA Launcher instead of stock, the launched that came with it indeed lagged a lot.
