Anybody sticking with gb for now?

I've tried pretty much every ICS rom aside from MIUI and gb seems smoother to me. Granted its had more time to be refined and I understand that but the intermittent lag here and there and other little hiccups (the keyboard just closing on its own while I'm typing, some missed key presses) are annoying. I'm currently running IMM76 on my 9020a and its better than the last ones I tried (IMO anyway) but I still find myself debating going back to my gb backup or at least another gb rom... just curious if anyone else felt the same way or I just need to give ICS more time..
Edit: Just wanted to let you guys know after researching everybody's suggestions I finally ended up on the latest Bugless Beast nightly build paired with the Trinity 1200 MHz kernel and have been running smooth as can be. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to answer and give their suggestions

Yeah, used to do that back in December, when ICS came out. I was flashing GB back every 2-3 days but just couldn't stick with it knowing there's something newer. Eventually got over the small lags in ICS and been using it ever since. IMM76D is even better.

I moved to a GNex last week, but I tried every ICS Rom for a while and ended up going back to Deck's GB. It's just smoother and faster. The Nexus S doesn't really have the RAM that ICS wants.

David, marcellnn are you guys running a custom rom or just stock ics?

No, I'm running stock 4.0.4 now and the leaked 4.0.4 since the beginning of February. Before I was running stock 4.0.3, I've tried almost all custom ROMs and kernels in the dev section, but I don't need any OC, UV and that stuff.
And I'm rooted and unlocked, of course.

I left gb. Since official ics was released for nexus s. The UI of ics is much better in ics vs gb. Ics is also much faster vs gb. I always use custom roms since I started to enjoy the tweaks of a custom rom vs stock. Stock is boring for me.it doesn't have the pull down lock screen and notification. No toggles shortcut. No voodoo controls which allow me to listen to music while screen is off. No 3way reboot option. No bln that alerts when I received a notification. And much more....

try the ICS 4.0.4 OTA. I just installed it on my dad's I9020T and its buttery smooth.. My dad says it is alot faster than GB. (he knows nothing about root, custom roms and etc..)So if he says its faster (a complete noob) than it is definetely faster....

Slim ICS uses a non ICS launcher so it has the GB feel.
Its smooth and blazing fast.
It got me away from GB so I'd highly recommend it.

I have thought about what the switch to GB would be like. I could never take a step backwards when it comes to tech and software. I see a lot if people posting about "ICS BUGS" but I have had little to none (AOKP MATR1X NOVA) when I first switched there was a comfort thing but that passed quick enough.
I won't switch until a new OS roles out. Give my set up a try for a few days and see if it works better for you.

but i have a NS4G. im ok with waiting until after an official is rooted or until im due for an upgrade whichever comes first

I'll probably never go back to gingerbread, my setup now is awesome everything's fast n smooth I even give it quadruple a rating

The most recent version of cm9 is the first ics rom that i feel has been even close to responsive enough to compete with gingerbread. Not sure if I'll stick with it or not but I'm giving it a few days.

I have used all ics roms for ns4g but I always go back to the last kangs cm7

I see no reason to. 4.0.4 is leaps and bounds better than GB. All these quirks I keep hearing about from people I have never experienced. It just seems some people look for things to complain about. But come on. No piece of software is going to be entirely problem free.

Crummy Performance

I fail to understand why the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 performs so horribly compared to my Galaxy Nexus even when the GNex is in completely stock and unrooted/modified form.
My Tab 2 suffers so much graphical stuttering, lag, etc that I can't even stand using it. Some of the initial custom ROM's (Clean ROM and InfectedROM) help with this but it's still so uncomfortable to use!
Does Samsung's additions to Android really suck that bad?
Sorry if this sounds too much like a rant. I just really wasn't expecting such poor performance when seeing the specs. I wasn't expecting Tegra3 performance but damn, I just need things to stop hiccuping and stuttering all over the place.

Yes there Addons do suck up a lot of performance. I can tell when I switch roms.

I've seen some people complaining about the same issues. I would recommend you to just return it and get something else, like an Iconia from Acer. It's weird for me to see people complaining about the bigger model, but so far no one complains about the 7 Incher performance wise.

The stock rom is not optimized at all. The g nexus (which I also have) was built to run andriod 4.0. Thing will get better as time goes on but the roms available for the 10" are not as good as that available for the 7".

What this thing needs is some Franco love. LOL

I have a 7 2 and on the stock touchwiz it is very sluggish compared to a lot of other tabs. Its a lot better when you debloat or run cm9 or aokp. Stock is just to bulky with to many background processes. My opinion if your going to stay stock return it if you think its to slow because it won't get better.

Even debloating the stock and using an overclocked kernel its slow. Aokp and cm9 are the only way to go IMO. I rooted and switched ROM's an hour into ownership. I made sure cm9/root/cwm was out before purchasing. If you dislike the lagging, flash it.
Cars, computers, phones and the like are never left stock for long around here!

As soon as one CM9/AOKP pops up you'll have a dozen to choose from a week later. Patience!

I agree debloating the stock Rom just doesn't help with the performance. Im just gonna be patient and wait for a well developed Rom. Not saying the current custom roms are bad. Much love to all devs that work there ass off

The P5100OXXALD9 stock kernel is a jewel. Sure, I cooked my own ROM, had a bunch of stuff to fix, but the Samsung bloatware is all but gone now and using CM9 apps instead of that bloat helps a lot. The UI is a lot smoother now and I no longer get any frames skipped during scrolling etc.
So, after shaving off 250MB of bloat and tweaking the kernel and the ramdisk just a bit, my P5100 feels like something else. It's still about 40% stock and the kernel is also almost stock, so there is still room for a lot of improvements. For now, it's better than what I expected.
It's not impossible, just a lot of work :-D

I ended up trying your ROM even though I have a 5113 and it is, by far, the best running of the 3. I can accept a few extra useless menu options and a "you don't have a cell phone signal" icon for the added smoothness.

Jellybean, disappointed with project butter. anyone else?

I have been loading most of the patchwork JB Roms that have been popping up here. I like some things about it, like Google Now, but I cant seem to understand "project butter." I cannot tell any real difference in smooth-ness. It still seems pretty laggy on my NS4G. I am hoping this is because either I have been using a newer device as my daily driver, or just that these Roms are hacked from other releases.
Does anyone else feel this way? What are your experiences with devices like the nexus 7 that were designed with JellyBean? smoother? same?

Nope I can see the difference its faster & smoother than ICS open app draw opens fast in ICS it took a little longer jellybean is the best OS update from Google so far 2 big thumbs up & I'm getting the same or a little better battery life than I was on ICS

I can definitely see a huge difference it terms of smoothness. You should probably delete some apps you don't need or do a factory wipe.

I mirror your experience, however am still hopeful that when Sprint releases the actual files, things will be better. I haven't experienced JB on any of the newer devices, but the reports are good. Life is all about expectations ... guess we should be thankful that we're even receiving the updates.

FYI---it is VERY hard to understand you without any punctuation.

You still should keep in mind that we're on a 2 year old device... yeah yeah the original Nexus S came out in Dec 2010... not quite 2 years, but it's based off of tech that debuted in the original Galaxy S in the summer of that year. It's great hardware, but it's expected that we'll have a tough time dealing with newer OS' ... quite frankly I've considered going back to a stripped down CM7 just because of the smoothness compared to ICS (and JB) ... we're just running into serious RAM limitations on this device.

Try different kernels as well with the rom.
I definitely see a difference,
I have no more lag at all with what i used to before.

I think, the UI can be a bit smoother, but multitasking and opening/closing apps works smoooooth!

Much faster and smoother than ICS.

Don't expect 2 much from old device like nexus s.

Google is getting sued for project butter being "too smooth" by apple because apple claimed smoothness was patented.

I just don't like the fact that it keeps the phone awake over night. You ask me jellybean trying to do too much in the background. Last night I turned off 3g. When I woke up someone sent me a mms at 12am. When I check the battery stats it kept my phone awake trying to download a mms without data on. Not to smart

Dialer slow, opening Apps in Settings freaking slow, chrome slow...

JB gave new life to my NS, definitely the smoothest it has ever been, and I don't feel the need to OC. As I do with all phones/roms, all transitions and animations are turned off, including the third one added with JB. Also using Nova launcher, but am going to try Apex again now that they updated it with JB base.
And the biggest thing I noticed is how quickly the recents come up now, it's instant. I honestly didn't think that would be possible on the NS.

Pick up the Galaxy Nexus and you'll see the difference much clearer. NS is just plain old.

Why don't you try setting animations to 0.5?

People don't like change, I remember seeing threads bashing ICS when it came out. Its new and the devs here have done made great progress in the short time since its release.

Chrome is a ram hog. Add in all the other processes eating ram, and you'll see why it's laggy.

Am I the only one who finds ICS & JB unbearably slow on Nexus S?

Seriously, it's like treacle! I'm about ready to root and install gingerbread.
Dialler takes forever to come up, when I tap the search button it takes many seconds for the keyboard to appear.
No-one else seems to mention this problem?
I have very few apps installed, and certainly no bloatware like task killers, etc.

No, you aren't the only one. Our phone is just a bit too old. All we can do now is bear with it until we upgrade.

Jelly bean is slow as **** for me. I guess most of the people just can't notice that jb's animations and reaction time when touching the screen is just delayed.
I've been frustrated with my nexus not acting fast untill i tried one combination. I'm i9023 user and this combo is just perfect for my phone. No input lag whatsoever, no animation lag, everything is just fast and instantly responsive. Give it a try and tell me what you think.

Use it with apex launcher, because trebuchet may lag when opening app drawer. To avoid dialler lag, i suggest using exdialer, it's downloadable from the market.

Even the keyboard is just faster than on jb. Scrolling, switching between windows, statusbar is more responsive. Try and tell me what you think.
Sometime I wonder how come poeple say jelly bean is faster than ics. First impressions are good, but after very short time of usage jelly bean is full of slow ****. Every rom based on jb is just slower than this combo.

Nope. No problems here. Phone is fast and stable, although a little struggling with battery life, but like I said before somewhere in these forums, life is full of tradeoffs.

Yes this thing is slow. Its actually kept me from being involved with the phone. I don't add different ROMs or anything anymore because they all feel to heavy for this phone.
I'm just counting down the days until the next Nexus is released.

For all of you who are not happy with the speed of Nexus S, try using this rom -

I can assure it is definitely much faster than the stock ICS or jellybean ROMs. If you have been using the stock Nexus S ROMS, you will see noticeable difference in the colours. They are much better on this Xperia ROM and does not have that yellow shade. I love the ROM and believe me I have tried almost every ROM available on XDA for for Nexus S.
Though there are 2 issues, for which I haven't found any solution, it blocks the calls coming from unknown numbers and you do not even see a missed call. And you can't use the default screen locks. But apart from these, the ROM is rock solid, never crashes or hangs, everything works fine and it is ultra smooth.
If you think your phone is running slow, I highly recommend this ROM. Everyone should give this ROM at least a try.

I don't really notice a difference speedwise between ICS and JB. They are both a little slower than GB was, but not unbearable. The added features of ICS/JB are well worth it IMO.
Overclocking a little bit can help, although it can hurt battery performance a bit.

Agreed. Current combo keeps up with wife's combo. Don't know what the OP is talking about. See sig for both setups.

I agree with jellybean being kinda slow. However, i dont know if it's just the rom's were installing on our device, cause i kinda remember stock JB being pretty fluid which is kinda making wanna go back to stock again

GB was stale, solid, and best battery life.
I miss having a flashlight app that worked and better battery life.
ICS and JB have been ok up until I started having power button issues last week.
JRO03L update seems to have fixed the majority of freezes, crashes, and power button issue.
After the reality has set in, I would have stick with GB

no problems here. aokp jb build 2 and beladus marmite 4.4 kernel combo is running smooth on mine.

Are you implying that every end-user of android phones should learn to root or install custom roms/kernel to get a DECENT experience? While I'm content to see Google supporting a device almost 2 years after its release (Apple does that as well btw), I'm kind of feeling disgusted about the overall user experience, laggyness, crashes, random reboots and decreased battery life. I wish Google released a FINISHED product/operating system and not leave its customers in a sort of beta-testing fog.

I'd suggest backing up your data and wipe your whole device like a madman. Format.
And start from scratch with the rom of your choice
Might be that time for your ol' precious Nexus S.

Memory management is the problem...
I think the problem has to do with the way memory is managed in ICS/JB... I still can't find found a recent ROM that will keep the launcher in memory no matter what. That's terrible for user experience! None of the task or memory manager apps in the Google Play Store seem to help either.

^ this. I was having a bad experience with JB as well until I formatted my sdcard. And I'm not talking about wiping from CWM. I'm talking about mounting it as USB storage and formatting from a PC.

My annoyance with laggy 4.X.X finally spilled over the edge and I moved back to stock gingerbread. I am loving it!! Lightning fast, just the way it was when I first got nexus s. I miss some of the jelly bean refinement, but the phone responsiveness in everyday use is much more important to me.
Besides stock 4.x.x, I tried cyanogenmod 9.x.x. Lag is just unacceptable. I figure Google optimized ICS to be thread happy targeting new multi-core devices, pushing our single core nexus s under the bus.

BUT I feel your pain and have been very frustrated before, ya just need the right mix of kernal rom and settings.

I've thought the same thing before and went back.... Browser speed is what sold me on jb. Its painfully slow swiping around pages on GB.
Cm10 stable is same battery life I got on GB...4 hours screen time. About 15 hours with a full charge on 3g without WiFi. I guess its all in the eye of the beholder....

May be I venture to CM10, but more likely I just upgrade the phone to Galaxy S3 or such when GB gets too old.... ICS/JB feels right at home in S3. Response is instantaneous

Seriously? Go to anandtech.com and scroll around in the stock GB browser. You should post a video of this so we can all remember how awful that browser was.

Currently i am using cm10 stable with air kernel jb stable and my phone is good performance and good battery life

Just ignore him, he tends to talk down to anyone who posts something he doesn't agree with or that he feels they should have already known. Classic case of alpha male syndrome..

As for not agreeing, found this nice video, fun begins at 0:45 :

It's side by side comparison of
1. Loading the web pages
2. Scrolling down the web pages
3. Opening/closing apps
4. Moving between apps
Scrolling down the web page is the only comparison where ics is ahead. I believe it's only faster while working with large, full size web sites. Also,GB, allows you too scroll before the web site is fully loaded while JB makes you wait longer. I suspect it's a factor in making scrolling choppy

The problem with Androix 4.x is that it eats more RAM than Gingerbread and animations are sometimes laggy on the Nexus S.

I'm running 4.2.1 quite happily on my NS4G. Using the Marmite kernel I have quite a bit of RAM compared to stock kernels. I also limit my background processes as I don't really use any multitasking (2 processes is where I cap it).
Meh, to each their own. I loaded up CM7 stable a few weeks ago and couldn't stand being back on GB, however, my wife is still running 2.3 on her Inspire 4g and I can't get her to even do the OTA for 2.3.5(? maybe .7).

Flash 4.2 and you will feel the real speed.
