Confused on rooting - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off sorry if I have missed something but I have been doing some reading but am slightly confused.
I am looking at a Verizon Note 3 on ebay to keep unlimited data since I just sold my Note 2 which was rooted and running a custom rom which is kinda a must for me. Where I am confused is I see tutorials on how to root the note 3 but I also see a petition to have verizon unlock the bootloader. When I hear locked bootloader I think no rooting and custom roms. So did verizon just recently lock the note 3 down like they did with the note 2 4.3 update? Sorry if this is a stupid question.
Basically I just want to be able to root my Note 3 but am not worried about voiding any warranties with verizon since I'm buying it on ebay or something. Feel free to post links to this answer since I'm not opposed to reading just kinda overwhelmed right now.
Thanks for answering my stupid question and have a great weekend!!!

Oh I don't doubt it for a second!! That's why I was confused saw plenty of custom ROMs but didn't really pay attention to tw or not. Not really an issue since I've been having crazy battery draining issues on everything I put 4.4.2 on. Haven't done my research but I'm sure it won't be long till 4.4 tw hits the note 3 anyways.

Ya, Sprints already getting it.

What is "locked" on the retail device is the recovery and boot partitions. They are crypto-signed and verified early in the boot sequence. Until the phone is hacked, it means it is impossible to boot a non-Samsung kernel or non-Samsung recovery. Even if you intentionally blow the Warranty flag on the phone, this behavior will not change.
So, while you can root, whatever "ROM" you want to try and use must play nice with a STOCK kernel (& ramdisk). So, no CM for example.
Also - because of "version upgrade locking", if you upgrade a stock kernel (let's say MJ7 -> MJE), you might not be able to use Nandroid restores of previous ROMs you formerly used any longer... depending on how tightly the ROM depends on kernel & ramdisk behaviors.
And one more thing - the Safestrap "psuedo-recovery" actually boots the beginning of a stock ROM (or whatever you have in the "stock slot"). One consequence of this is that you no longer have a separately bootable recovery to fix up mistakes or restore backups from. If you wedge the primary OS somehow, the consequence of that will be a loss of all data on the phone which is not backed up, and a trip to Odin to restore a pure stock firmware ... and starting all over from square 1.
(If you buy a Note 3, you might want to consider a BIG removable SD card - then you will have room for media/backups/etc that is not vulnerable to an Odin flash)
So basically, you have a limited form of rooting available.

Can a new S4 from ATT carrier be rooted?

Saw a good deal for a new Galaxy S4 for $79 + $70 trade in on my old HTC One. So only $10 for the New S4: )
But reading around people saying the New S4 firmware has a hard lock on it and not easy to root and only one or two roms working on it?

You should do some searching but the s4 with mf3 can be rooted. I know they're not going to have the the new 4.3 update on it yet. But I'd say get the s4 and use the kingo root method.

You will be able to root the AT&T Galaxy S4 easily, almost everyone here in this AT&T S4 forum
already has rooted their phones and have flashed custom roms without any issues.
Good luck!
MF3 can be rooted but you can't flash a custom recovery (TWRP, CWM) If you're asking if you can root the device and flash a custom rom, it all depends on your AT&T store. Try and go to your AT&T store and before they unbox the S4 and start activating everything, make sure you tell them you want a phone with the firmware MDL on it. If they don't have any with the firmware MDL, tough luck. If you get an S4 with MF3, you can only root.
Not only root.
Root it and install Safestrap to install most TW based ROMs that run 4.2.2
Most important is to lube your eyes and
READ/SEARCH all info to do with your build or you will be a victim of the I bricked my phone cause I can't read.you can Google anything to do with your phone and ad "xda" to the search and you will find what you are looking for.

Last two phones I had, the Nexus 4, and Note 2 on ATT, were easy as pie to root and install recovery, and that was it, you were done forever, just flash a ROM + Kernel, reboot and bam you had a fresh new ROM to enjoy, and was so easy and fast to do get it installed, was a no brainer. What happened in the past year with phones being so locked down so hard, where you can't just do that anymore ?
Wish all Android phones were as simple as a Nexus to flash rom's on. But I don't want the Nexus 5 phone with tiny battery, I like bigger batteries or removable, and more storage options, etc...
Yes it can be rooted using the external sd card method. Its actually easy to do.

Thank you. So I can root it no problem, but then it's a matter of very select ROM's available due to my firmware ? And none of them can be 4.3 based ? Which the S4 doesn't even officially have yet, but not even the Google Play Edition ROM that is 4.3 can be installed on this firmware, only the older 4.2.2 version ?
Ok, so I root with using 'Kingo' method
Then install the safestrap .apk, and install that
And then install only a ROM on the provided list, which will all be 4.2.2 based only ? Still rather have any of those, than just stock TW out of the box unrooted
All correct

You can put Google play edition ROMs on but not the 4.3 as stated in the guide. The only real problem for me is that it seems to use more battery than tw roms. And you don't have all the features as your tw based ROMs on the gpe ROMs. Some tw ROMs are just as fast if not faster. Fast speeds and great battery life can't go wrong with that.

You guys recommend a new S4, or the LG G2 ?
Thing is the G2 development is very sparse, and cases and accessories few and little for the G2. And what about resale down the road in a year or 18 months ? Which will fetch better trade in money the S4 or G2 ?
Thanks.

porting a note3 rom to note 2014

its been awhile since I've done any work on a rom I used to do some stuff with MIUI. What I did with that was mostly simple stuff from phone to phone. The question is if I wanted to port a note3 ROM over to my new 2014 what would I need to change besides the kernel, the build.prop I just can't figure out what else?

True the Canadian Note 3 has looser restrictions but that is a VERY small percentage of Note 3's in the world.
Based on the statistics this does not bode well for the International version either exynos or qualcomm...
I'm not assuming the P60* series is completely locked down but I tend to look at worst case scenarios then work around that.
My job tends to revolve around that so there's no nasty surprises and people ending up dead.... This bleeds through to all facets of my life...
After the KK bootloader is released we will have KK roms... Why try out questionable roms that may or may not work on/brick your device...
Does this seem rational to you?
Fairly, Im certain he wouldn't release a port that he hadn't tested. And the rom itself can be flashed separate from the boot loader once we hare the 4.4 boot loader for ours, and rather I believe he intended a non KK rom. however if after 4.4 releases he chooses to its Just a matter of getting the original dev's permission then if a direct port isn't possible checking the dev's change log and replicating it as thoroughly as possible.

[Q] Root method for NC1 update?

So before I go any further I would just like to quickly note that I have tried to do some research on this question before posting it and have came up empty handed.
Now for the question: My Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-I337 updated to NC1 the night that the update was released and I was wondering how I could currently achieve root on NC1?
Specs:
Model: Samsung SGH-I337
Android Version: 4.4.2
Baseband: I337UCUFNC1
Currently running 100% stock and would like root.
Thanks in advance for any and all help!

At one point we all were and called ourselves like that. What bothers is that we see the same questions on new threads over and over. A forum was design to read and search. Once you don't find your answer you post a new thread. Some moderators will suggest the same to avoid clogged our forum. That's how we should treated and care for. I don't feel it's offensive and if it is apologize to those who feel that way.

I remember when I had my GS3 I had to flash stock 4.3 (which if I'm not mistaken still has a locked bootloader) and then I flashed a custom stock 4.1 rom and was able to flash the latest CM 11 plus a modem/bootloader combo zip from 4.3 and it worked fine. Is that even in the realm of possibilities with the GS4?

I had the GS3 also and it was great you could flash anything Ubuntu and more, but now AT&T tied our hands because the war it's having with Samsung we pay. Others phones like the HTC it's reported to be bootloader unlocked. You can flash cm 11 without any problem.

I can't say I have ever heard of anyone messing up the installation process before. It's load the apk to your SD card, install it to your phone and then tapping the install button once you open it. That's it.
As long as your root method installs busybox and your SU app disables Knox, you should be fine.

Trying to load a custom recovery on a locked bootloader could mess up your phone. Safestrap was made for our phones. Read up a bit you'll see we can't do normal custom recoveries and we can't flash normal roms cause we're locked. Only thing we can do is root and safe strap. I'll suggest odin nb1 update to nc1 root. The reason I say odin to nb1 is because right now you don't have a recovery at all due to you trying to install cwm or twrp.

Do you have an AT&T S4? If so then no. It will not load if you try. Until someone figures how to crack the locked bootloader, we are stuck with ROMs that use stock Samsung (you'll also hear them referred to as TouchWiz or TW) kernels. I believe CM uses their own custom one.
I am able to use the Google Edition one because a user modified it to work on aTouchWiz kernel, and even then things like USB file transfer does not work.
I do not believe anyone has done the same for CM.

Odining back to NB1 will not trip Knox. Also, I believe downgrading to 4.2 will not touch your bootloader, if it were that easy we'd all be rocking CM.
You could run this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2767026
Its technically not a TW ROM, but it has its quirks. It was never intended to work on locked bootloader phones, but it has been retrofitted on to them.
Wrote this if you would like a guide on how I got 4.4.4 version up and running, it's kind of tricky.

Nb1 and nc1 are the same. Nb1 is just a small update over nb1, there isn't even a tar file for nc1 because it's such a small update. You won't be able to odin back to anything prior to nb1 unfortunately without bricking. Now I do understand the hatred of touchwiz but once you're rooted you're able to delete a lot of the garbage bloatware put on by Samsung and AT&T. This makes the phone so much better along with super long battery life. I've been able to get 4.5 hours of on screen time and about 16 - 17 hours of off the plug time like this.
When deleting bloat you can easily Google and find lists of what people have deleted off their phones using titanium backup (amazing app, let's your freeze or delete what you don't want). Also one thing I found out which is dumb. Deleting Samsung hub breaks auto rotation (what one has to do with the other I'll never know) but you can download the file needed to fix that here

Nope. Bootloader and knox are completely different. Knox will just give annoying messages once tripped. Bootloader without unlock we're pretty much dead in the water. There has been some talk about ways to possibly unlock the bootloader so it's definitely being worked on. I've also read that the black hat even (hackers convention) might have something promising. Also anything that is done on the s5 could very well apply to the s4. It's all just a matter of time

Nope. Bootloader and knox are completely different. Knox will just give annoying messages once tripped. Bootloader without unlock we're pretty much dead in the water. Sounds great that the s5 and s4 integrate . Also there's a bunch of stuff online which shows how to disable certain aspects of the bootloader using linux (Ubuntu) . Do you think that'll work. It's a huge risk.

If it hasn't been done to give us anything I wouldn't do it. Only thing we have right now is safestrap. Which is similar to a dual boot

Android 4.4.4 nj6 question

Is there a way to root a verizon note 3 running nj6 firmware right now? If not how do I downgrade back to 4.4.2? I just accidentally upgraded to 4.4.4 and now I don't know if I can root it or not. Is there also a way to get safestrap on 4.4.4 right now?

I'm sorry. You are stuck with 4.4.4. At this point, there is no way to go back.

No there is no way to root it yet. Just hold on to it for a few more days. Once a rooted ROM comes out, it will open the gates.
Ok thanks for the info
I'm wondering how fast this will happen since developer Hashcode is no longer actively involved in rooting

I'm also wondering how long it will take for there to be a rooting method for 4.4.4
Patience is needed but I expect months of waiting.
That sucks

All I want is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.lumen&hl=en(Cf.lumen) Not sure if that's formatted right, but yeah, I just want a 2700k screen without losing a ton of contrast. It would be MUCH nicer on the eyes.
Does it work?

Now is there a way to root nj6? Or how much longer do we have to wait for a rooting method?

There is no root method as of now, and there is no way of know how long or if there will ever be one.
I don't keep my hopes to high, since the focus of the enablers is on lollipop by now...

Nooo don't say that, somewhere was to be a hero dev, who loves the Note 3 4.4.4 .
?????
It's so sad to known I voluntarily upgrade to NJ6.
(sobs)
I guess I too don't keep my hopes up for getting a root for android 4.4.4 cause I agree all the devs are focusing on android l aka android 5.0

Keeping hope alive.
Mean while I prefer to use my Samsung GT-N7000 (NOTE 1) rooted than the rock with nice pouch called SM-N900V (NOTE 3)
I might just call Verizon & claim my phone is broken so I can get a replacement & see if the replacement phones come with 4.4.2
