Hi everyone, recently i bought from a friend a n4 with replaced front screen after cracked digitizer. The proximity sensor was not working causing the screen to stay black during making/receiving a call. I googled it and found out it is a pretty common issue after screen replacement and the only workaround was to put some very thin clear tape or a small piece from a screen protector, between the front glass and the proximity sensor. I tried that for a fair amount of time but with no luck. So i tried to put the small rubber piece that covers the light and proximity sensor the opposite way. Now the bigger hole of this rubber piece is on the small sensor (proximity) and the small hole is on the big sensor (light). It worked right away and still works great after a month, The light sensor seems to work fine as well. Confirmed working from another guy as well. So i hope this helps whoever facing same problem after screen replacement. :good:

only one thing : 1.000.000 Thanks. It worked for me too .... I spent so many hours to fix that shi#&*.. with no success and your tip is WORKING in less than 5 secondes ... !!!
you made my day.... good job ...
I just wanted to give a quick thanks to the OP of this thread.
I just did a mass purchase of screens from HK to fix 4 phones.
3 Nexus 4's and 1 Optimus G lcd / digitizer / frames replaced and the proximity sensor would not work on any of them. After much assembly and disassemble I found this thread.
The quick fix of turning the rubber gasket to the wrong holes on the sensor fixed them all! I dont know why it works, but it does work!
They all now work perfectly.
I used: Proximity Sensor Finder for troubleshooting while trying to find a fix and verify the fix.
Worked for me too. Thanks OP!

That would be correct, if you follow the steps on that video with regards to the proximity sensor, it would be installed correctly and the holes would line up perfectly between the gasket and sensors. However, that doesnt seem to work, you want to now install with the tab facing the other way, you will now see that the holes do not line up correctly and the gasket is partially covering the sensors, dont panic, that is what you want it to look like. Now put it back together, download a proximity app and make sure it works.
This fix worked for me too.
Thank you so much!
It works! Fixed! Thanks
Hi guys,
sorry to OT in this thread, but seems related.
After changing the position of the rubber thing, the proximity sensor works fine, but the light sensor reports values between 0 and 80lux, and I think it's wrong since it goes up to 10000lux.
Is this a problem of -again- the rubber part, or maybe it's just my screen that comes with a faulty light sensor?
Thanks!

Probably it's the rubber part. Just try without it to see what values you get. If it works then you might have to try make the hole a bit wider. My light sensor worked ok after this fix, but wasn't as sensitive as it should, played a bit with lux and auto brightness settings (any custom rom have such settings - there are some apps as well or xposed framework + gravity box) solved everything.

The only suggestion pops up in my mind is to buy a "very broken" nexus 4 on ebay, but it could cost you so much money that I am not sure it worth it..

To find only the rubber part as a listed product is impossible. You should search for n4 proximity sensor as a spare part and ask the seller if he can send only this rubber thing. If you plan to buy a proximity sensor you should double check that this rubber is included, cause usually is not, but iv seen listings that already have it at their photos.

ok so i bought a leather flip wallet for my streak heres link
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190596988332?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
anyway, so when i get a call or make a call, my screen goes black and no matter what i do i cant get it ack on, the only way to get screen back is to remove from case as soon as i do it comes on again , is there a solution for this? how can a leather case cause this is it something to do with the magnets on the case?
i have no other issues other than that one which is why im kinda stumped as to whats causing it
any ideas would be appreciated

There is a possibility that the Dell Streak 5 has a proximity sensor that is being covered or activated by the new leather cover you've bought.
Seems logical, but it's worth checking up on.

Well i also have a carbon fibre skin on it and the case doesnt cover anymore than the skin, so dont think its a proximity sensor, thanks for reply though

I have an Otterbox case on mine, the holes for the sensors have been very carefully designed, despite the thickness of the thickness of the case, and it is very thick indeed. The holes are designed like funnels so that the outer edges are wider than the inner edges. I strongly suspect this was done because the sensors that blank the screen when it is close to your face is very sensitive. I've experimented with holding it to my face, I'm sure the case you got is fooling the sensors as it must be slightly covering one of them.
It seems the most logical answer.
Sent from my Dell Streak 5 using the XDA Premium App.
i can see where your coming from witht that, but it doesnt cover the sensor at all, the weird part is, if i pull it half way out my case it does cover the sensor but the case then screen back on lol
Got a pic of the case?
From the picture in the link in the first post, the cut out doesn't look like it extends far enough to uncover the proximity sensor. The proximity sensor is next to the front facing camera.
Just my opinion from a poor picture. If it works out of the case but not in the case, logic would dictate that the case is the problem.
kraz
I should have said "better picture" but in reality I didn't look at the link.
Anyone else have this problem?
I go into dialler, choose number, then choose "call xxxxxxxxx" and then screen goes off whilst the call is being made.
No matter whether phone is flat on the desk or utpo my ear, makes no difference and it wont come back on!!!
Same when receiving calls. I swipe to accept, the screen goes off.
In both instances, the only time the screen comes back is when the other end hang up, then I have to press the power on to get back to the lockscreen.
Very bothersome, any ideas?
Anyone?
Wondering if an app is causing me bother?
As I'm also seeing the phone display the lock screen from time to time for no reason without me touching the power button.

Do you have a screen protector on you nexus? I had to take mine off because i caused the exact problem your having. As soon as I took it off the problem went away. So if anyone gets a screen protector make sure it has a cut out for the prox sensor.
Haven't had this problem.
It's a more or less common problem since phones turn themselves off during calls when held to the ear.
Sometimes the proximity sensor is just wrong calibrated or something like a screen protector prevents it from functioning correctly.
You can recalibrate the sensor with certain apps. If I'm not completely mistaken, there are some in the market.
Mine did it too, I was on a call, the conversation was done, and I wanted to end the call , but the phone stayed black...
as if the proximity sensor was not working.
I had to press the power button to get back to the dialer.
Actually happened to me the first time today like 2 hours ago.
My mate had this problem. Turned out it was just the screen protector fooling the proximity sensor. Job done

What brand of screen protector were you using? I ordered xo. Hope it works fine.
My SGP screen protector only had a cut out for the camera and covered the prox sensor. I had to remove it.
I'm sure once SGP figures it out they will make cut outs for their nexus 4 screen protectors.

X acto knife. Carefully.
Yeah i had the same issue with my SGP. I just out the slot with a scalpel (hey i have them available to me and its better than an exacto knife).
Anyways, i contacted their support to report the issue (not because i wanted my money back or anything). I asked them to let me know when they retooled the protector and then maybe they could send me a replacement. Instead they are sending me another package for free. I swear no one reads/pays attention to things. i don't want more protectors that are not professionally cut, but whatever.
My SGP also has this problem. I sent a email and will see what they say.
I've got the same problem with my cheap eBay protector too. But I also have one on order from Skinomi, and I just emailed them to ask if they have the cut out or not...good news:
"Yes! We have finalized the Skinomi film designs for the LG Nexus 4 and it does indeed include a cutout for the proximity sensor."

This works. I had the same problem and cutting off the upper left corner of the screen protector fixed it. Buy a better quality screen protector next time.
Hey everyone, recently I have been facing a lot of issues with the 'ghost screen' issues on my digitizier and my battery became inflated as well.
You can read about that sad story here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/nexus-4-touchscreen-issues-t2712807
So about 3 days back I went out and bought a new Frame+Display/Digitizier and a new Battery.
Everything was great except for the proximity sensor.
It keeps on turning off the screen during a call because the sensor thinks its covered up.
A bit if googling and I can see that this is a common issue with people who have done a screen change.
The thing is that the fix is pretty simple. All I did was that I took off the back cover and the plastic frame on top of the motherboard and placed a small folded sheet of paper behind the sensor module. I then reinstalled the plastic frame and the glass back. The sensor now works perfectly.
The thing is that I guess the sensor became a little loose and the air gap between the proximity sensor and the front glass resulted in a faulty sensor reading.
The paper presses the sensor module down and eliminates the gap between the sensor and the front glass, thus fixing the problem.
If you dont have a warranty and really want to fix your phone easily, try it.
It took me about 3 minutes to do the whole thing.

Great advice! I recommend it.

I just got my new 6P and attached a tempered glass screen protector. I've never had a screen protector interfere with the proximity sensor but as soon as I do something like make a call, the screen goes black and won't power back on with the power button. Sometimes even after the phone call has ended, it'll make the lock and unlock sounds but the screen stays black. Anyone else?

You need to get a TGSP with the proximity sensor cutout. In the meantime, you can use the power button to end call (Settings -> Accessibility -> Power button ends call).

Yeah, I think something is wrong here. It responds to light but as soon as the phone call starts, pitch black, and even when I use the power button to kill the call, I still have to push it one more time for the lock sound, and then again for it to unlock. A master reset might be in order. It did update as soon as I pulled it out of the box. Maybe I shouldn't have tried to restore it and just started fresh.

Tempered Glass Screen Protector
Some of the first ones shipped by vendors don't have proper cutouts.
Here's how the one I purchased fits.
https://goo.gl/photos/zrckMyvwpnyQTU2v7
Hi guys, I have the same issue.
Is there even something you can flash, as I heard that the Nexus 6 had something to do with the proximity sensor too?
Or is the only resolution to get a new screen protector?
Cheers.
So I'm having the same issue with my 6P, but before I remove my beautifully applied screen protector, I'd like to be sure that removing it fixes the issue. There's a Google groups thread that is saying the issue is software-based and that phones without a screen protector that have upgraded to Marshmallow (Nexus 5, Nexus 6) are still having the issues.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/oqh-V37hgDM
So has anyone who has been having this issue successfully resolved it by either getting a new screen protector that has the cutouts or removing the screen protector altogether?
I can confirm that removing the top portion of my screen protector fixed my problem. Prior to cutting the screen protector, ambient display wasn't working either. Both work fine now.
I also have the same issue had to peal off nice tempered glass hope they fix with software.
Thanks Raphielh, appreciate the info. Also, if anyone bought the Supershieldz tempered glass screen protector, they are making new ones with the right cutouts and will be sending them to their customers in early November.

I just installed the same app and my proximity sensor is not moving at all either. I also noticed when I'm on the calls if I move the phone away from my ear, the screen doesn't light up, I have to press power button. My Nexus 5 would just automatically light up when you move it from the ear. So does that mean proximity sensor is dead?

Jonathan,
Where did you buy this TGSP? Can you post a link for others to purchase it?
WOW! I'm glad I found this thread. What a joke! I have never had a screen protector stop a sensor. Oh well, I'm glad I got a good deal on the ones I bought. Now I have some glass screen protectors that are no good. Anyways, thanks for everyone sharing their experience. Thought my phone needed to be sent back. Software issue should fix it. In the mean time I will be shopping for a screen protector that works. SMH
Anyone else had this?
If I make a call as soon as I press to dial the screen goes black and I can't reactivate it unless the person in the other end hangs up, so if it goes to voice mail I have to restart my device, if the person hangs up I have to double tap the power button to wake it up but that activates the camera, that's the only way I'm able to do it.
Fully stock and up to date firmware
I don't have the phone, but I read somewhere screen protectors could be causing that. Do you have one on?
It's most likely your glass screen protector does not have the proximity sensor cutout.
I have only just put my screen protector on but the phone has had the problem all day

Find a screen protector that won't block the sensor. I bought mine from amazon and I read the reviews where many screen protectors blocks the sensor.

Its not down the drain. Contact the seller and get a replacement or refund. I bought a glass one for $6 USD and the seller on ebay refunded me when I explained the issue. If its a problem with the phone you can always RMA it and get a replacement. This has been a problem for me because I can't answer calls with google voice. The proximity sensor is below the top speaker in the lower right hand corner of the speaker.

Is there any way to disable the proximity sensor?
It is odd that this huawei build Nexus has this problem when prior phones haven't had a protector interfere with the proximity sensor.
Any chance it could be Marshmallow given the N5/N6 guys have been having problems all of sudden too & their phones have been out longer without this issue.
UPDATE: Now it appears that it works some of the time & not other times for me.
