I''m picking up an n4-16 off of cl for 160. The guy is claiming its a month old, I don't believe it obviously, but I would like to know how old it actually is. On my HTC One S there is a build date in the bootloader. How bout the N4, is there a reliable way of knowing?

I can't answer your question, but I seriously doubt that the phone is only one month old. I don't see a build date on my bootloader, but I'm on a custom rom and so I don't know if it was originally there.

Yeah there is no reasonable way it is as new as the seller claims, but if I could figure out a way to get the device's age, I could call him out on it, use it as a bargaining chip and lower the price a bit more. Also the battery needs to be considered, if its a launch device, the battery might be on its last legs.
As an aside, your boot-loader is generally not modified by a custom rom. Such a change is technically possible I suppose, but unlikely. Or more correctly, I've only rarely ever seen it done, and usually its just a cosmetic change, nothing too fundamental.

I just got a limited edition Nexus S today. Anyone else hear of these? It has little android robots all over the back cover instead of the faux carbon fiber look.
Apparently they were given out to google employees and they will be getting all updates even earlier than the retail versions of the Nexus S.
Post a pic of the back, that sounds cool!
maybe we can get a system dump of the device?
here is a picture of the back. taken with my G2, haha.
any difference other than the back and quicker updates?
How will Google differentiate and push updates sooner?
grrrr *angry bird face*
WTB limited edition employee Nexus S PST
omg I want one.
jealous ...
wait how'd you get this?
Wow, at first I thought this was a fake. It's apparently legit, not too sure about updates being pushed to Limited first though.

They did the same thing with the Nexus One employee version too, guessing they have the IMEI on file somewhere.
They did it with the developer phones. I have a developer G1 right next to me, with Androids on the back.
I'd expect the NS to be the next dev phone, so I doubt this thing will be limited edition.

the cover will make its way on ebay or available from some supplier soon enough i'd guess for much less that $300
ya apparently the updates goes by the IMEI and these versions probably have an earlier or "priority" IMEI.
nothing else is different just the back cover and the updates.
Im confused at how that website obtained/selling them though because apparently they were distributed only to google internally.
Honestly? I dislike it. Wouldn't spend extra dough. I like the back I have now thank you very much.

As was already mentioned I'm pretty sure these are the developer versions because the next dev phone is nexus s. My guess is they'll be available to all devs through google soon. Just like all the other dev phones which had little androids on them as well

I dont know about that. AFAIK there was never a 3rd party source for the Nexus One "Googler edition" battery covers.
I love my Evo. Main reason? Personalization, flashing custom roms, flashing fonts, etc. My knowledge of development ain't that great though and I'm wondering from those "in the know": Do you think we'll access root and be able to flash custom roms?
For me, this is the best tablet b/c it runs android. I don't mind the price, I just want to be able to do what I want to the device Opinions?
I wouldn't doubt it. In fact, I expect it. I don't think there are any android devices that haven't been rooted. Just have to give it time once it's released.

Whats the deal with the locked bootloader on some Moto devices? I hear the term but I'm not familiar with what it means (EVO owner). I assumed it had to do with not being able flash ROM's and/or root. Can anybody explain?

That's about all it is. They shut down any access to the loader which means you can get around to install anything. Most of motos new phones are this way. Its a kick in the nards but it protects their hardware from stuff like overclocking and burning out stuff. And of course the occasional brick.
I hate it but I see the point. And I can see the xoom being locked....little expensive for them to have to keep taking back because a new rooter f'ed theirs up.
Hmmm. Though I don't see custom ROMs being as necessary, that actually gives me a touch of pause. I don't like to think that the life of the device can't be extended if Motorola created a XOOM 2 or something.

I don't think the hardware spec as is will get outdated anytime soon.
Well..outdated yes, regress into unusable for web, video and apps.. certainly not.
The device per the data sheet will still run things quite well as we know them now for a very long time.
Only thing yet to be really proven is how teg2 can handle intensive 3d functions in 'real world' scenarios.. and if you think Crysis will be better played on a tablet I have a bridge for sale.

I know the hardware won't be outdated, I'm talking about all the obsolete android phones because their OEMs abandoned them and they never got FroYo. I think if it ends up being locked down I might have to utilize Best Buy's new return policy on the 28th day.
The Atrix has already been rooted:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/19/motorola-atrix-4g-already-rooted-and-its-not-even-out-yet/
I wouldn't be shock if Motorola backs off the boot loader block. Pretty funny huh. I was talking to the guys in best buy mobile and they claimed it was verizon that was locking down the boot loaders. Of course these are the same guys who were shocked when I told them I had a OC nook color w/ froyo and honeycomb.

Shame on you for talking to BB employees about anything technical. No hate, but most of them are morons.
It just makes me laugh when I talk to people like that. Being an electronics technician I do it sometimes just to see what chunks of stupid come out of their mouths.
Since the Xoom is intended to be the reference development tablet platform by Google, it should be easy to root and has an easy to unlock bootloader, just like the Nexus One and Nexus S.
That being said, Motorola is Motorola... so they may do their usual Motorola thing and encrypt everything up. But I think the chance that the Xoom is easy to mess around with is pretty high.

Same with me. Infact im not even sure im going to get the damn thing. They were so unorganized and unprepared. I NEVER go on websites and do the ratings but for this i did. It was a horrible experience trying to get this thing pre ordered. 3 of the techs had to talk to each other to figure out what i was asking for. I didnt think the statement "i would like to pre order the motorola xoom" was all that confusing. I never shop at best buy but being as inpatient as i am i took the risk to get my hands on this thing as fast as possible. I just hope i get a call once they come in. As it looked im going to be the only call they have to make.
Did anyone else get a copy of their preorder or just a receipt?

Thats all i have also. The confusion among the techs had me skeptical. Hopefully my skepticism doesnt hold to be true.
Also praying for no locked bootloader. Hoping to be rooted within the first few days
All I got was the receipt and the gift card as well. Got to our BB ~1300 to place the order and was the first to actually place an order, as opposed to people asking questions about it. Course our BB is in a town of ~50,000 (metro area ~150,000) so I was a little concerned they would even get any in for Thursday, they say they are indeed due in this week.
Did see the preorder paperwork she filled out.
Like above, they didn't know what they were looking for. The girl found it without too much wait though.

Yep, ran into the same problem. The guy had no clue, the female was all over it. She knew exactly what I was asking for, went right to the pre-order sheet and got it done lickity split and she was hot to.
Well, this is the story of the rise and death of my Atrix.
Bought this wonderful phone on the 6th of August 2011, after reading reviews of it online, for a cheap price of $146 with dock and a 2 year contract.
Lots of exciting moment, especially when the 2.3 update came, and again with the CM9.
However, I had LOTS of issues with the touch screen, and had to send it in for repair 5 times.
Well, all was fine till about 15 days ago, when I dropped my phone, and the digitizer shattered. Well, its fine, I told myself, I'll just buy one from ebay, well, it is easy to install after all.
Yeah, well the item arrived AFTER my warranty was over, but i was like "meh, I won't need it anyway"
Replacing the digitizer was very easy, however, after I replaced it, I realised part of the digitizer was not working =(
Yeah, ****. Well what choice do I have? I sent it to Motorola for repair.
Well, I went there and they were friendly and nice, as usual, but when they scanned my serial number, all hell broke lose.
"Uh, well you phone is out of warranty, including the 3 months grace period"
"Um, yes, well I know that"
"There will be an evaluation charge of $25"
"About how much will it cost?"
"Well, the parts about $150"
"So a total of $175?"
"Uh, yes, would you like to reconsider"
(I would love to, but I can't. My carrier is screwing with me, and I cannot cancel this plan. I am paying $30 for 12GB, and if I renew the plan, it will drop to 2GB. I have no choice but to keep my atrix)
"Um, not really. Just send it in"
Well, two days pass and I was in school when I received a call. (Yeah, I'm a student, still in secondary school actually)
Obviously I can't pick up, so I just let it ring...
Well, I tried to call back, but no one answers. (Dear Motorola, answer your phone PLEASE)
This goes on for a few days, but one day, I was lucky enough to pick up.
A little tired here, its 12.54AM and I have school tomorrow, so I'll cut it short.
In short, after consulting with their managers, Motorola decided they will not fix my atrix. Instead, they will replace it with a BRAND NEW atrix 2
Obviously, I'm chuffed to bits. Is the atrix 2 better? Not really. However, I do really appreciate the service shown here. Is it google at work here?
I have no idea. However, Motorola has just won a loyal customer.
The whole point of this post is simple.
1. Motorola, please don't allow flaws like the Atrix digitizer and wifi+bluetooth to get pass QC
2. Motorola, please pick up your phones. You are a phone company. Doesn't reflect well if your phones are useless
3. Motorola, thanks for being such a good company. You are really setting a good example here. I cannot describe how much I really appreciate your efforts here.
4. Goodbye Atrix forum. You all have been really nice, and I am sure this phone will continue to exceed your expectations, and I am sad I won't be here to witness this.
Lucky American.
Why no one is ready to pick up my Atrix and swap it with anything non-nVidia crap based?
They're seriously allowed to do that? Replace your phone with a completely different one that's largely accepted as being worse?

nVidia makes all of their SoCs closed-source. It shouldn't matter if you run stock, but it makes it makes it much harder for devs to work their magic.

Hello all,
I need some advice concerning my Nex4. As many people have experienced, I also have a slightly buzzing earpiece and now I'm in doubt whether to use my warranty and get a new one or not.
Since I live in Holland I got my Nex4 through someone else from a store in Germany, about 1 - 1,5 hours away to reach it if I want a new one. Since I'm 15 and not able to get there myself I'll probably will need to go through some quarreling with my parents to get them to driving me there.
The issue is that I'm not sure if I want to go through all those things, since the problem doesn't actually bother me. I can make good quality calls with a little of buzzing which I don't mind and I'm happy with my battery life: 3-4 hours of screen time on 1,5 days with medium usage.
I hope you can give me some counsel. Thanks in advance!
By the way, when I'm studying in silence I sometimes seem to be able to actually hear some high-pitched sounds, which I do mind, but I guess that's partially a placebo effect.
Sent from my beloved Nexus 4
I just got a REV 11 device. it still makes the nose, albeit slightly quieter. With that said, these phones have build quality issues and getting a new one might be more hassle than it's worth. My REV 11 device has a slightly worse screen than my REV10 (lots of streaks on the the grey scale). Just keep that in mind.
Wait, REV 10 and 11? Did you already do this many RMAs or did I misunderstood the meaning of the word ^^?
Sent from my beloved Nexus 4
You misunderstand the word, REV is for hardware revision, a new revision comes with small changes. I got a REV 11 device and it's my first one.
Also keep in mind, you don't know if your replacement device is going to be any better.
Ah, thanks, any idea if I could check my REV?

Hey,
Okay, so I've been using the Galaxy S2 for god knows how long and I really need to move on.. and also the fact that its battery is dying for the third time... that helped me to take the decision to go with the 6P.
There's just a major problem, I'm neither from US nor Europe... and I don't wanna pay 200$ or 300$ extra just to get it.. because the only reason i'm buying it is it has a great value in its current price..
I have seen a few nice forwarding sites, like fishisfast and usgobuy and they do look promising... I can buy from the Google Store and ship to my country and that would only cost me about 50 bucks more.. which is great...
My only concern is defective units... I've seen so many complaints on the forums here about defective units starting from the slight pink screen to speakers and the list goes on... and I'm afraid that If I receive a defective unit i won't be able to get a replacement...
is there's any safe way of getting the 6P without compromising warranty or paying like 200 extra bucks
