Between a rock and a hard place... - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I need some advice concerning my Nex4. As many people have experienced, I also have a slightly buzzing earpiece and now I'm in doubt whether to use my warranty and get a new one or not.
Since I live in Holland I got my Nex4 through someone else from a store in Germany, about 1 - 1,5 hours away to reach it if I want a new one. Since I'm 15 and not able to get there myself I'll probably will need to go through some quarreling with my parents to get them to driving me there.
The issue is that I'm not sure if I want to go through all those things, since the problem doesn't actually bother me. I can make good quality calls with a little of buzzing which I don't mind and I'm happy with my battery life: 3-4 hours of screen time on 1,5 days with medium usage.
I hope you can give me some counsel. Thanks in advance!
By the way, when I'm studying in silence I sometimes seem to be able to actually hear some high-pitched sounds, which I do mind, but I guess that's partially a placebo effect.

I just got a REV 11 device. it still makes the nose, albeit slightly quieter. With that said, these phones have build quality issues and getting a new one might be more hassle than it's worth. My REV 11 device has a slightly worse screen than my REV10 (lots of streaks on the the grey scale). Just keep that in mind.

Wait, REV 10 and 11? Did you already do this many RMAs or did I misunderstood the meaning of the word ^^?
Sent from my beloved Nexus 4

You misunderstand the word, REV is for hardware revision, a new revision comes with small changes. I got a REV 11 device and it's my first one.
Also keep in mind, you don't know if your replacement device is going to be any better.

Ah, thanks, any idea if I could check my REV?

Reboot into bootlader mode & it will tell your hardware rev.

I'm on unrooted stock. Any dangers and how to do it?

There is no danger in booting into fastboot made & checking the info. IIRC with the phone off hold volue down & power at the same time.

Thanks, I've got REV 11. I guess I'll stick with it.

As stated in the OP I asked for counsel, not answers. With the given advices I was planning to decide for myself, which I did.

Does anyone have REV 12?

So... is this the flicker problem

Sometimes while watching the screen, every now and then I get a flicker, I only noticed it when I was staring at the screen reading a book, if so I am sad because my OTG cable just arrived and I was having so much fun
Your life is ruined.

well... at least it works and theres no other horrible problems so I can still play with it until google send me a new unit :silly:
Reckon I should wait a few months so I guarentee a unit from the new batch, or just do it now?
You know what. As I was reading your post I started to see tons of flickering. Thanks a lot. Lol jk. Better now than later. I'm still in my 15 day window
I'm stuck dealing with Asus.
I'm leaving the country for a 3 week vacay so I can't deal with a 4th exchange from Google Play.

I think it's worth a shot. My replacement is perfect, much like many of the initial batch / recipients. Risk you take, right?, jumping on that first wave. Seems like things have settle down, think the negative outcry is just more easily heard thAn the positive.

Definitely going ahead and do an exchange now. Got my replacement unit today and this one doesn't have a flicker problem at all. My last one had really bad flicker.

Well I only got it last week so that makes it better if I submit that its faulty at this point..
might seem like a stupid question, but where the hell do I go to organize a replacement
I've seen the flicker on mine and called to replace it. I was told to try a factory reset to see if it was hardware or software. I said I'd try tomorrow and call back/set up replacement if it doesn't work. What do guys think? Could it be software?

Define "soon" . you may be waiting until around November or so. I think the back glass itself is sleek as all hell. I'm just afraid of breaking it. So I put it in a case where I don't get to enjoy its beauty.

Here's what I said in a thread of someone asking if it's worth it. Basically: you should buy it.
Johmama said:
The main pros of the Nexus 4 that I keep listing anytime I tell people about it are the following:
1. Price. $350 is pretty much half the price of any other competitor to the Nexus 4
2. Pure Android, updated directly from Google. As soon as a new version of Android is released, it's on the Nexus. Google develops Android FOR this device.
3. Design. Glass front and back, it's a solid phone. Looks sleek.
Now, newly-released phones do have slightly better hardware. But we're getting to the point of diminishing returns. We're packing so much hardware into these devices, you'll hard-pressed to find software that actually makes use of it. I think the only debate you should be having is buy the Nexus 4 now, or wait until the next Nexus comes out, possible during the holidays. That isn't to say this phone won't still be a solid phone then, but I can understand if some people wait to buy updated versions.
To answer your question: yes. It is definitely worth it. At $350, it's fiscally irresponsible NOT to buy a Nexus 4. Right now I'm paying $30/mo for a tablet plan on AT&T with 3gb of data. Having weird and crazy options like that don't seem to happen with other phones. I feel like the Nexus 4 is YOUR phone, not 80% your phone, 20% the manufacturer's.
Spoiler alert: I might be a little biased, but c'mon. It's a sweet phone.

Thanks everyone for replies, especially @Johmama . How's the battery life and speaker sound? I wish I could buy it now, but I have tickets to pay so I have to wait a month
Not to mention the strong development support, if you're the adventurous type it's nearly impossible to hard-brick a Nexus.
Pure Android (AOSP) is rather nice by itself and I could live with that, but I like to go custom a bit .

Well battery isn't as long as say a Galaxy S3 with a 7000mAh extended battery on it. The N4 uses a 2100mAh battery and depending on your usage, it could last maybe 4 hours of constant screen usage at full brightness (screen takes most the battery), or it can last over 21 with the occasional checking of facbook, emails, etc once every couple of hours.
Here's a screenshot when I finally got it down to zero percent. (it stayed idle overnight as I slept, and then I used it here and there during the day.)

LoL, true we may be bias, but I'll at least tell you quirks I've noticed. Even so I'd still pick an N4 unless all the other brands want to ship full AOSP at the same price and include extras like maybe a micro-SD card slot or replaceable battery . I kind of wish you could use USB-OTG without a 5V adapter, but I don't use my phone the same way I use my Tablet.

It usually lasts me the whole day until late. I'm not constantly using it, however. I'm on all stock so you'd get much better battery running a different kernel and rom

Well I'm not buying a phone of any of you, so it's not like someone has to advertise it so I'd buy it. That's why I asked in N4 forum, because all of you have N4.
Basic stuff like Wifi and 3G data have hardware or driver problems. I sometimes wish I'd paid $100 more for a phone that has had more testing/QA. (Not sure there is a better phone for only $100 more, though.) I still prefer this phone to the SGS3, which has fundamentally bad OS design and poor compatibility with third party Android builds.

What should I do with my old Nexus 7?

I bought a new Nexus 7, returned it today due to screen problems, and ordered a new one from Best Buy that I should get tomorrow or Thursday.
I was wondering what you guys have done with your old Nexus 7 or any recommendations on what I should do with mine. Mine is 32GB and still perfectly functional. I was thinking about using it as a media server but I'm not sure how useful that would be. I'd rather not have it just sit here and collect dust.
Thanks ahead of time.
Sell it.

Find a less fortunate kid and give it them if you don't have your own kids or a nephew or niece... Or use it with multirom and have downloading all kind of Roms they have tons

Just give it to somebody you know who would use it if you don't need the money. I gave mine to my mom since she babysits my kids all the time for free.
Will give mine to my parents as well...
I say you mount it in your car for GPS/music. I don't give anything away to anyone for free ever. Except family

Try to impress a date and bring it with you on a boat, only to fall into the water (happened to me.)
But seriously,
1. Ebay if you want to sell it fast, tho you probably won't get as much as you want for it, plus ebay and paypal fees sting.
2. Craigslist if you want to risk getting robbed.
3. Give to niece/nephew if you have them as a christmas present.
4. Keep it and wait 20 years until it becomes a collectors item, then sell it for bookoo bucks!!
5. Learn to develop games/apps with it.
6. Use it as a coaster.
Is developing something you couldn't do with the new one?

I only suggest using the old one to dev on just in case something goes completely wrong and it gets ruined. I don't know much about android development, so I don't know if its even possible to brick the N7, but just as a cautionary measure, I would rather use an older device than a brand new one JUST IN CASE.
In the same boat as you, have no clue about development, was just curious. But now that I too have an old nexus lying around maybe I'll look into it!

Oh, it's possible. Believe you me, you can do it. It's just a bit harder to kill a Nexus device in most situations.
I can confirm it makes a great coaster. I'm starting to lose interest in flashing new ROMs every few months, but I may repurpose my Nexus 7 into a HUD unit of sorts to mount over my desk.

Random Black Screen Flashes

I have owned a Nexus 7 2nd gen for a couple months now and have just started to get random flashes of black (occurs for not even a quarter second) ...
I am wondering what causes this...
I have not damaged the Nexus in any way and bought it brand new..
I have only used CleanRom and PA ROM...
The functionality of the tablet remains great, but the flashes are very annoying ...I have tried clean installing multiple times but the flashes still happen...
Any feedback/solutions would be a big help...
Thanks

I had that happen soon enough for a return to be viable. Do some more Google searching and you'll find people who fixed this as a hardware issue. They had to open the back and fiddle a connection. Didn't sound to hard but I just went to best buy instead.
Happy hunting, sorry I don't have a link.

Yea I would exchange it before it is too late. Doesn't seem that troublesome but if it got worse, or worst, disconnected entirely, it would bring bad news.

Just because you bought it off ebay doesn't mean it doesn't still carry the 1 year manufacturer warranty on the hardware. It would require you to send it in, but worth a shot.
Once you pop the back and start fiddling with hardware, you run the risk of doing enough damage where Asus will void the warranty. I think I would check with Asus first before resorting to hardware modifications.

What about Overheating and lag ? Do you face any of those problems ?
Phone gets very, very hot under heavy usage. The top of the screen is 50°C easy. But it doesn't "overheat" as such, the phone doesn't stop working. This phone suffers with lag, like any other phone, but TouchWiz doesn't help it.
I wish I got the HTC One instead. This is by no means a bad phone, but the HTC One is better.

Well, I'm not looking for a flawless phone. I know every phone has problems. After all i'm changing from a Nokia C5-03 to a Galaxy S4 so that would be a HUGE improvement. However, It's better than the S3, right ? I mean the S3 also overheats and such or it works without problems ?
Mines doesnt have any of that problems, because I remove all the crap from a rom and it only uses 600mb ram.
But it does suffer from knox....lol
Well, I decided to buy it after all but i guess i wouldn't root it because i'm a complete newbie and i might do something wrong. Thanks anyway for all the replies it really helped
Dont do anything to it until you read about knox/even samsung updates. Also reading other peoples problems on here shows what can go wrong.

Have had the phone since launch. Originally came from ios (iphone 2g, 3g, 4, and 4s).
Mind you, I have TMO variant, so my experience may vary with others with international version.
I love the large and clear screen. I don't experience any heat issues not lag of any kind. My battery lasts long enough, just have to charge before I sleep.
I have used google edition roms, and currently using touchwiz stock.
Also, love the wireless charging.
MicroSD I have in the phone allows me to have many music albums as well as couple seasons of my favorite TV show.
Hope it helps!
