Hi guys,
I'm sending back my iPhone 5S to Apple tomorrow (terrible battery life!).
I'm thinking of purchasing a Galaxy Note 3 when I get my refund through.
Now my only concern here is the fact I will lose the TetherMe application.
I'm on a 3UK PAYG plan for £15 a month and I get All You Can Eat data.
However, because I'm not on the One Plan I am not "allowed" to tether.
Please do not reply to this thread to say "solution: get the one plan" LOL!
TetherMe spoofed it to make it look like data was coming from your phone.
I actually got away with TetherMe for 2 weeks and they still didn't block me.
Is there an application on Android that will do pretty much the same thing?
I'm not just looking for a hack that enables tethering. I want to hide it too.
I understand PDANet has a "Hide Tethering" feature. How effective is it?
To clarify, if 3UK detect tethering they'll redirect all browsing to this page:
"Are you using your phone as a modem or personal hotspot?" Familiar?
I'd show you a screenshot of this precise page, only I can't post links.
Anyway, as crappy as the iPhone battery is, I will really miss TetherMe.
But I've decided I can't have a phone that dies every 4-5 hours either.
Well I've never had an issue tethering anything on Vodafone UK. Android has the functionality built in. But in terms of the block, I'm assuming it's looking at browser user agent. If you spoof your browser, (firefox has addons) that will probably work, if it's looking at protocols, you just won't be able to use bit torrent etc. Don't take my word for it though. Just a few ideas.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
TetherMe on iPhone worked without spoofing the browser's user agent.
Meaning to say I used it just as I would use any normal desktop internet.
Even downloaded windows updates and updates to Ubisoft games on it.
I don't want to make my 24 inch PC screen load mobile pages for sites lol!
And based on the above I'm not entirely sure that user agents come into it.
I'm guessing they can tell with their own software. Maybe flashing a stock btu (non 3 branded rom). A mate of mine has never been detected by 3. He does use blutooth tethering mainly to save battery apparently. Not sure if this prevents the detection?

To be fair, I don't know "why" TetherMe worked, but I do know that it "did" work.
I'm wondering whether anyone has had any luck with sneaky Android tethering.
I mean, on iPhone, the native tethering feature is enabled by default anyway.
But try and use it and you get redirected to that page on their site. It's useless.
But with a jailbroken iPhone with TetherMe installed: that's a very different story.
I was delighted/surprised by just how much I got away with when using TetherMe.
There are a gazillion android apps and hacks to "enable" tethering.
But my concern is how many actually work without carrier detecting.
TetherMe works. But TetherMe isn't available on Android, only iPhone.
Before I got the one plan and tethering part of my plan, I was tethering for well over year probably closer to 2 without any problems, despite it "not being allowed" as long as you don't take the p£&@ you'll be fine, from my experience anyway.

Do you tether often? Are you a heavy user or just an occasional light browser?
Of course I'm a heavy user who likes to stream stuff like Netflix on unlimited.
Obviously my home internet isn't unlimited hence why I resort to the mobile.
Also, is this with the native tethering feature or do you use a hack or a VPN?
Native WiFi hotspot in notes setting and light to medium rethering I would guess, mainly when our virgin router goes down ... So maybe twice a month but then it would be hammered for those times.
The wife tethered a whole season of sons of anarchy the other Sunday with no issues.

Just noticed your paying 15 a month for payg. Your not contract bound so why not pay the same 15 a month for the 1 plan (I'm on)?
It's a 1 yr contract, unless you can't get a contract?
2000 min 5000 text and unlimited data + tethering allowed!

As I said above: "Please do not reply to this thread to say "solution: get the one plan"
I have my reasons. This post wasn't helpful.
Most, if not all UK telecom giants won't offer tethering on PAYG, for whatever reason they don't let us know. - There used to be a few apps around that can get around the tethering but when I tried I got the msg about 30minute disconnect etc. -- While you may have your reasons for not going contract, it would seem the One Plan is the only option that you can actually use for it.

There are hacks that work. TetherMe is a classic example but TetherMe is only available on iOS.
My reason for posting this thread were to find out if there was something like TetherMe for Android.
But yes, in terms of native tethering and hacks that don't work properly, yes, tethering is blocked.

It will be a factory unlocked device, not a 3 branded device.
Not sure if that makes a difference, it doesn't usually though.
It's using am iPhone but the same would apply, maybe a fix?

Hi guys,
I have a Note 3 and I'm using Three Mobile UK with All-you-can-eat data. Since the beginning of the year, I've been using an official Poland ROM, which was the first one I got with Android 5.0 and I just kept it because my tethering was not being detect since then.
A couple of weeks ago I decided to change my ROM with one based on the Note 5 and this was very good, but unfortunately the tethering have started to be detected. I've tried everything that I could think of, but nothing would hide the tethering from Three.
I got feed up with it and went to find out what Rom did I have before, which I did. I went then to SamMobile and downloaded the same ROM I had before, installed it and it the tethering immediately stopped being detected
All this say that according to my experience, the best thing to do is to install a foreign official ROM in your android if you want to hide your tethering. The Poland one works for me, but probably some others would work as well.
Once installed, you just need to change the language to English and that's it. Simple as that!

I just got an early upgrade notice from VZ (really early, like over a year early, but I'm not complaining) and I'm planning on checking out the X after work and probably ordering it. Now, my question is with the 3g hotspot functionality. I see that it's apparently available now but VZ charges extra for it... Is that some sort of VZ app that provides the functionality? Froyo isn't out yet for it, so I'm wondering how they're providing it, and whether anyone knows if they'll continue to charge for it once it's available via Froyo. Thanks for any information!
You will always be charged. However do the one click root and install barnacle then it will be free.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Makes sense...it's not like VZ doesn't try to limit functionality on any of their other phones and only provide the functionality through their own pay features...
I mean, I realize you may use more bandwidth using your phone as a mifi, but you're already PAYING for that bandwidth.

Technically this does work. It will not however, be free. You will be violating your Terms of Service. *If* you ever get caught, you will likely be billed, or have the line terminated, etc.
Don't get me wrong. I'm rooted, and have the Wi-Fi Tether app on my phone, and it's unlikely that VZW will make much of an effort to stop the small minority of us who get that capability. However, one can never be certain. If you take these actions, you should do so knowing full well that it isn't "free".
Agreed. I also don't tether to the point that I hit 5GB that might cause a flag. Now i you tether a laptop daily you will likely get caught. I have hit 3gb on my droid an it was via streaming and downloading.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
There is no way for VZ to find out that your using services that are paid for free, unless you root your device and take it in for repairs without unrooting it.
i just cant seem to get tethering to work. i mean i can connect to the phone and computer to connect, but not web access. tried the wifi tether app included with 1 click root, and barnacle. nothing

yes there is app built in from vzw for there hotspot app. it cost 20$ a month and u only get 2gb. on the palm free it started out as a paid app then went free. there is tethering on 2.2 and when you use it it takes you to vzw.com and you have to add this feature
root your phone, download android wifi tether, and you're set, for free!!

Firstly.
They are violating your privacy as a user.
Secondly.
If the said terms have been put into place after you have bought and signed for the device 'without you agreeing to it initially', then legally you have the right to sue them.
You can easily argue that AT&T is taking advantage of the idea.

I think they detect it because tethering uses a special APN which is detectable by att.
I've also read(and immot sure how this works so dontquote me onit) but when att sends a signal out it has what's called a TTL number. This increases by a value of 1 everytime its passed down so the return number they get is higher than it should be.
Don't really know how it works but isaw those methods somewhere so thought I'd let you know
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
Thing is, if your on unlimited, there's NOTHING in your contract that says your allowed to tether on unlimited, and that's how they get you.
No way to sue, they state that your not allowed to tether, and will change your plan if you do, so they're completely in the right.
Remember this... we only get as much rights as the carriers allow us to have.
and the other side of the coin is......is there anything in there to not allow tethering?
I got the message. A 12 year veteran of AT&T. Broke my contract for free and switched to Verizon.
Done like a boss.

Can't the method AT&T uses to detect tethering be bi-passed by rooting and removing their tethering app...?
Another way the know your tethering is when you use several IPs at the same time, like you tether, connections include game servers, youtube, etc. And it's kinof hard to explain how you were able to watch netflix movies, youtube videos, play games at the same time.
Could people share what data plans they use in the UK on their Nexus? I would probably prefer pay as you go rather than a contract. It seems quite difficult to choose.
Hi there,
Probably im not the best person to help you in this regard. Im from Portugal and i use a monthly plan from Vodafone that gives me free calls, sms, and 150mb per month, my N7 is wifi only, so i use my ace as a wifi hotspot, needless to say that with this plan i barely download anything, i use it only for social apps like tapatalk, Facebook and such. It all comes down to what use you are about to give to it. But i can tell you that my 150mb barely get to the end of the month lol. And i rarely web browse with it.
Like i said, since i am from a different country this could not help at all.

Thanks a lot for the comment anyway. I was thinking about buying a Wi-Fi only Nexus, but decided against it. First of all, tethering is not allowed in my plan, so there is a risk that the operator might block my internet access if even only temporarily. Also tethering is quite battery consuming. Also the price difference is not that big and with PAYG plan I hope to use 3G only when I don't have access to Wi-Fi.

In Portugal the diference resides in 50€ more. Quite a raise.

call 866-895-1099 its the automated activation line, it will activate the correct IMEI and SIM on your plan, activate any new features you selected(if applicable), add insurance to the device if you chose it at purchase. Otherwise everything is still incorrect based on your old phone. After the call your current sim will go dead, use the one that came with the phone.

Please don't get hostile, but it is a really, really good idea to properly activate your new phone through AT&T and also to take the new SIM card. But instead of the automated system like I used, I might recommend calling through to an agent/CSR.
I had concerns about my unlimited plan as well, and noticed that if I were to activate, it would likely remove the unlimited H+ plan in favor of a 3gig LTE plan. I called a couple different times about this, and they said that everything would be alright, and they noted the account that they told me this. Shortly after activating it, I noticed that it did indeed make the switch on me, and that I suddenly had a 3GB data limit on this line. I called back, and they said that this was necessary to be able to pre-order the device, and it was not giving them the option to put it back. They put in a ticket and gave a "it will be fixed by this date" date. About a day and a half later, I got a text saying they corrected the issue. I checked online, and my account was back to normal.
I'm 90% sure that if I had called to activate my phone manually with an agent, they could have spared the unlimited plan from the get-go. I would recommend calling and talking to an agent, such that they can mark the order as complete/received and they can enter the new IMEI and ICCID numbers.
Further, there's a small, non-credible amount of evidence that suggests that the newer SIM cards and a proper activation will yield better network speeds. I don't see how, apart from some sort of throttling implemented by AT&T for "everyone else".

While this is true, they don't automatically update their billing system and other records - or at least not right away. I work with about 110 AT&T lines at work, mixed between crackberries, "feature-phones" and iPhones. I've noticed that while a new phone will work, but the website will still show the old IMEI number until we manually update it.

Mhm...definitely strange. I have heard of that scenario as well from some of customers. First off if your getting a call saying that they awarded you some money of your bill thats a lie. Two...if anyone calls you saying that they can save you money on your verizon bill then that could be a local verizon account rep your speaking with. However if that turns out to be the case they will normally attempt to set up an appointment with you to come in to a local store so they can do an waa with you (wireless account analysis) to see what can be done on your account to see if they can help you save a couple bucks a month, see if you have any available upgrades and etc. Three...if they are not directing you to a local store then thats extremely fishy. 4. As far as blocking spammers from calling you without using a app would really depends o what device you currently have. I have a note 3 and it provides exellent call blocking, text blocking and etc features. Which device do you currently have?

How can I add a line with unlimited data?

Verizon no longer currently offers a unlimited plan to new lines of service. The only way you can have the unlimited data plan currently is by a having grandfathered in or b talking to a friend or family member who has a line that with the unlimited plan that they will be willing to give up to you through the means of assumptions of liabilites meaning if they would be willing to give up the line to you...you then can take over that line of service and put it under your name. However by doing so they will run your credit again to see if your aproved to take over that line. Also added benefit in doing so is that wherever that person left off in their contract would be where you would continue off from. By taken over the line ut does not require you to restart the contract of that new line you just took over and put underneath your name.

Can we please keep the ability to root the device? I feel that a Locked Bootloader, even though not ideal, is okay as long as Verizon keeps the device relatively updated. (Or to put in other words, I don't think that Verizon would ever allow the bootloader to be unlocked).
But without root, there are a lot of features that Samsung have removed (such as the ability to add Widgets to the lock screen when it is locked) and wouldn't be accessible to us even though it is available to most other android devices. Same with backups.
Ive heard talks about this petition to unlock the bootloader for the note 3 but to be honest ive not heard any confirmation or caught any wind of verizon actually doing that. And yeah I see what your saying. And I can add lockscreen widgets to my note 3 without root.

Any news on when the Pink variant might come to Verizon?

I'm having crackling and poping sounds from my earpiece and the home button is wobbly. I am getting a certified refurbished replacement in the morning. If the replacement has issues what are the chances of getting a brand new device?? I haven't had the best luck with refurbished replacement. And are the certified refurbished replacement really refurbished?? I mean the phone hasn't been out a month yet.
I live in an area with the worst service for Verizon. I never receive calls or texts. My only option is a network extender. Is it possible to get one for free? I spent $400 on this phone and now I'm locked down for 2 years. I don't wanna spend another $300 to use the phone I just bought. -_-

What does the new update that was just released for the Note 3 improve?

@Southern mind im sorry about the problems your having with your find. As far ar you getting a new device your chance might be 65% id say since the device is still new. How many fully refurbished phones can corporate really have so far since the phone just came out? Its not even been a momth yet since the phone came out.

And since the phone just came out that certified refurbished device may not really be one. Could be brand spanking new

@eurofeik hey bud. And the coverage within your area is that bad? What type of device do you have by the way? Is it a 3g device or a 4g? For the price you said you spent on the phone am guessing you probably have a 4g device if so thats strabge your signal is that bad because normally with our 4g devices the technology increases in building penetration, voice quality and reception. Also what area do you live near? So I can look furthermore in to details for you? And I cant promise you that they will give you one for free but have you also tried calling customer care and seeing what they say?
