so i got my note 3 at the start of this month and since this is my first foray into android space i rooted it a week later, but hen i was reading online that samsung have some sort of flash counter in the phone that cannot be reset hence voiding warranty, my phone has a two years manufacturers warranty so that's not something that im looking forward to, i want to keep my warranty and not flash any roms till im well into the android scene.
im thinking of unrooting my phone just in case [havent really foudn a big enough reason to keep it rooted]
i check with triangle away that the counter is still zero but my status is custom
wanna change that back to official so will i be back in warranty territory after un rooting?

You mean knox. . As of right now. . It's changed to 0x1 meaning your warranty is void. Also threes no way yet (or ever) of changing that back.
You can check by booting into download mode by pressing power key, vol down(I think) and home key.
In top corner you will see knox warranty counter. If it's 0x0 you have Warranty. If it is 0x1 you don't.

Wow dude seriously you should have done alot of research. There are quite a few threads opened about this and if you did not know about Knox before rooting then you should have never rooted in the first place.

For three days I have been unable to reset to Samsung original standard rom.
I wipe the phone by doing a factory reset using the phone options, then I flatten the phone by using odin and XXUDMJ7.tar.md5.
Yet it still say's custom when I put the phone in download mode? is there any tool that will either bring the phone out of this custom rom state or brick the motherboard so that its unreadable?
As a result of being unable to flatten the phone I have no wifi with this this phone now

Yeah it will say custom if you are rooted there's a opinion in wanam will get it off
Have you tripped KNOX? - If you rooted the phone it'll never say Official again, to get the device to show official you need to install Xposed framework and Wanam and change status to official via that.
As for the no WiFi - not too sure, download mode > factory reset > flash Stock ROM > wipe cache > start up and see. only thing I can think of
PS Make sure Reactivation Lock is OFF

Thanks all for your input in this issue but I'm still unable to get back a clean slate.
It seems as if there is a hidden partition on the phone that is holding the old settings? I've wiped cache formatted the system removed SD card to no avail.
All I want is to brick the damm thing and take it back, is there a wiping tool for the note 3 that will find hidden partitions? or anything to help me get back my phone.
Its an expensive brick at the moment with no wifi

Indeedy. Plus If he did decide to brick it there is no guarantee that it would be replaced either.
Having only had my note 3 for only 15 days, I had to return it to Samsung UK.
They ran some test on the phone and found that the m/board was faulty thus not allowing the wifi to stay connected.

At least it got sorted, assuming they've replaced it with zero qualms? - hopefully you won't have any issues with the new one.

They re flashed the phone with Rom J4, even they couldn't get it working, its all being done under warranty. They fact they re-flashed the phone means they trip the knox not me
When the new baby come's it will be well looked after I'm using a very old phone the HP Palm Pre. Don't laugh I sold all the decent phones I had laying around, I guess it a small price to pay

Regarding your Note 3, we have done some investigating into the fault and it turns out that the device has what we call, been rooted. This means that un official software has been loaded onto the device and in the end this results in the voiding of the warranty.

Aww Shiz, Are they not replacing then? or have they stung you with a big fee?
Also kick off to high heaven with them, it's a hardware fault and changing software does not really make hardware break.. They have to fix faulty hw!
I'd make a massive fuss out of it til they fix it.
So they will repair your phone with a fee or totally dont want to repair it.

You're in the UK right? Stand up for yourself. There is an EU directive that stipulates that a warranty for hardware cannot be voided by modified software unless it can be proven that the software modification did, in fact, damage the hardware. The burden of proof is on the manufacturer or retailer to provide this proof if the fault arises in the first 6 months.
They will be unable to prove that your software modification broke the WiFi. Heck, you might as well all them to present you with proof that you rooted the phone. If you flashed stock, unrooted firmware back to the device, then the Knox counter alone is probably not sufficient proof of a rooted device, since it is known that flashing official firmware can sometimes trigger the Knox counter.
Where did you buy the phone? The retailers are usually the ones you need to deal with first. You could also try visiting a Samsung Service Centre where you might get a more sympathetic response.

All of this^^^^ , However, the retailer is the one who has to shoulder the burden of the repair/replacement. Since the transaction is with them directly. Just argue the case with them.

Samsung UK officially confirm that they will not honor any warranty they they can see the Knox software being tripped. Because the Knox was 0x1 and not 0X0 they will NOT REPLACE THE PHONE, OR PARTS. Samsung also confirm no repairs will be done even if you are willing to pay for it because of the warranty. I argued my case saying that I watched the engineer at the service center flash the phone, Samsung engineer responded by saying "they have no software means to trigger the Knox warranty"?
So if you love you're note 3 and you don't care about your warranty then you could root your phone. Remember the warranty on all phones is 2 years from date of purchase. Sold my SN3 for £237.00 and brought a new one with an tab 3 and case thrown in fro £600.00

Sh..t the bed!! -- So you lost out on the Note financially? - Phones4U then I guess? hence the free tab? - still - it cost you money, I would have argued the toss with them and made a massive fuss out of it until they fixed it. Other regions have apparently fixed even with 0x1!
PS: glad I have free insurance with NatWest, so any issues and I'm claiming on that bad boy, I ain't risking the warranty wrath (just yet...)
Knox can and does get triggered with official firmware. My Knox was triggered flashing official firmware and unplugging in the middle because it was stuck during upgrade. Then it will say connect to kies to recover phone and this triggered the Knox.
I used odin for all my flashes. .. But this did happen so I would tell them this And they can prove that it wasn't their firmware that did it. No way they can get away with it with the sit that happens in ota firmware upgrades.

Last week, my N3 flash (camera) won't light up. i think it is disconnected or maybe it was faulty from the purchase date (never used it before).
I flashed back stock rom. Same problem persisted so I went to service center, they refused to help me stating that my KNOX counter is tipped

I am thinking of rendering my phone useless, so they would not see KNOX counter?
Any idea?

You do the crime, you do the time. Nobody will probably help or assist you with this request as it is considered fraude. Not permitted on XDA, next time you will be reported. Why did you root a defective device anyway
These kind of questions - and there have been many - make me seriously wonder about the mental acuity of some of the people here.
I mean, this is a developer's forum. Why on earth would you think that a "Help I f****d my phone up, it was my fault, please help me commit fraud" would get any sort of advice?
Try tapping the phone lightly on your head. Since your brain seems to be denser than Osmium, the phone should shatter on impact without causing any damage to the few neurones you seem to possess. Reported.

Will there be a root solution without tripping the knox counter and how soon do you think after launch??
The phone isn't even being sold yet. Nobody can answer that question until the phone is in our hands.
although what EP says is 100% accurate, maybe worth checking out if something was found on Note 2 (which is no), Note 3, S4, or S5. If none on those, then most likely not on the Note 4 either.
Don't know.. Don't care lol. Not sure why everyone worries so much about Knox..as long as we can root,install recovery and flash what we want its all good. And if you concerned about warranty I would say your on the wrong site . I tripped my note 3 knox counter right after I bought the device and never looked back.

I think that in regards to warranty, Sammy still has an obligation to repair your device. They may charge you for the repair, but I'd say they'd need to prove that rooting was the cause of your problem - say a defective battery or non-functioning sim slot. :laugh:

Well, because not tripping knox is better than tripping knox I would say. What if something goes wrong with your phone that has nothing to do with rooting? I am sure Samsung in that case would also say, sorry, you rooted your phone, there will be charge for fixing this. If I create an unrecoverable brick, then, I would take responsibility for that, however, No one I am sure would want to be responsible for a problem with their phone that had nothing to do with rooting. It was just a question, that's all. I am rooting whether knox is tripped or not.
when you root your phone, Samsung says your warranty ends.
Period.
Your carrier may cut you some slack on a issue that comes up, not related to rooting, but most of them will refuse to do anything warranty wise if you are rooted. Obviously, they have to either ask you, or check themselves.
Over the years, I never had a warranty refused because of being rooted, and when I brought a phone in with a problem, I never volunteered that the phone was rooted, and they never asked me.
But, that might not be the case for you or anyone else.
Sure, if you can root, and not trip Knox, and there is a way to unroot and return your phone to stock in case of service being needed, that is the ideal scenario, but once I root any phone, I always assume my warranty is over, and I think most of us that have been on XDA for awhile would agree with that statement.

I couldn't wait for a KNOX solution when my Note III was born so I flashed and tripped my KNOX counter
I have read that people with a tripped KNOX counter have had repairs done and when they receive their phone back it has been reset to a shiny new 0x0 status!
Does anyone know what the best solution to my squashed in button would be? Whether to take it to a Samsung repair centre and plead ignorance or to get it repaired down the local market and risk it for a biscuit that it will be done properly :fingers-crossed:? Or order a button and do it myself following a youtube DIY guide?(I'm not too bad at basic electronics)

it's risky sending off to Samsung if they find out that you have tripped Knox you will be looking at a pretty big bill to get the power button replaced your other option is replace it your self it's so dam easy here try this link clicky

You're in the EU. There's this thing called EU Directive 1999/44/EC which clearly (well, if you speak lawyer) states that hardware defects not related to software tampering must be repaired without a fee under the original warranty for two years.
Burden of proof depends on the country (I don't quite remember if it was 6, 12 or 24 months in the UK), but you can easily prove a broken home button has nothing to do with a triggered KNOX flag. Software couldn't have broken that. (Unlike issues like overclocking causing powerspikes)
I can't guarantee you anything, of course. But the law's on your side in this. 8 out of 10 times they don't make a fuss about it.
(It's a good thing you lot voted No, or that law protecting customers would no longer apply to you. Just saying..)
Long story short... I tripped Knox warranty bit to 0x1. Now I am needing to take phone in warranty, but with Knox 0x1 showing I can't. My idea: HARD BRICK the phone in a way it won't show this Knox warranty bit. Anybody knows of a way to blow away the partitions/bootloader/anything that will make the phone not turn on? I know I could do this on HTC, but not sure about Samsung devices.

Thanks for posting this. I had no idea this Knox thing even existed until now. I was seriously considering loading some custom ROMs after recently rooting my SG4 but now that looks like a potentially very bad idea.
