[Q] Is it worth it? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all I have the Note 3 Verizon and as far as I know the bootloader hasn't been unlocked. Is it even worth it to root at this point? I'm just wondering if I should wait until it is unlocked, if it ever gets unlocked.
I have rooted every device I have ever owned, but they have all had unlocked BL's. Just looking for some thoughts.

I've rooted every device I've ever had and unlocked the BL except the Note 3 and my Samsung Note 10.1. But, back to the N3...yes, it sucks that we can't slap CM or custom kernels on it, but once she was rooted, I just modded the hell out of her with Xposed and Wanam. yes, I'd love to crack the BL and I'm looking for an unlock almost daily, but for right now, this is an awesome device and you can mod it to your liking without the BL being unlocked.

I took the lazy way and used Kingo Root (after which I downloaded my own Superuser App), and then installed Safestrap right after so I could use some of the few Custom Roms available.

Yeah never mind that method won't work for our devices anyway. I'll check out Kingo now...

The key benefits of the unlocked bootloader would be custom kernels, over/under volting and clocking the CPU, and custom ROMs that take advantage of said custom kernels like AOKP/CM/PA
Rooting and unlocked bootloader are not correlated when making the decision on whether or not to root IMO.
So when thinking if you should root, have you ever owned/experienced a rooted device to feel the benefits between battery saving, features, and performance? It's really a no brainer that the answer if you should root is yes, unless you're concerned with warranty and/or don't want to encounter minor bugs/issues if you decide to go custom ROM

Nah I don't so much care about warranty. If I brick, I'll just buy a new one. I know not everyone is in that position. To update my situation I have rooted using Kingo and I'm running BeansRom. It's nice I had it on my Note 2. I guess it's just been so long since I've rooted I have really forgotten about the difference between rooting and BL being unlocked. Thanks for the info!

I would root even if I didnt install a custom rom, I use apps like tasker which I need root access for. But personally I like using safestrap better than unloking bootloader and flashing over stock, yea I lose a little bit of memory space but at least if i get a bad rom or it crashes in the middle of the day I have the stock side to fall back on.

When unlocked & rooted, what about updates?

Hi .........
Just bought the Nexus 7, so, I'm now selling my almost new Sony S tablet, the N7 is far superior.
Just unlocked bootloader and gained root access, what I'd like to know is, how do we know, there is an update, and, do we somehow unroot the device, get the update, then re-root afterwards?
I'm new to all this, and don't know......................

Depends on what ROM you are running. In my experience Stock rooted devices will receive OTA's, but if you are running a custom ROM its possible that it won't. If you did the stock root method you should be alright, however the wonderful folks at XDA are very good at staying on top of release and keeping your rooted device up-to-date.
Hopefully one of the developers here would put up a stock rooted rom from any update. It may take a day or so but usually someone does it.

[Q] Should i root my Samsung galaxy S4?

Hi guys! I got my Samsung galaxy s4 first day of release and I really like it, I had an iPhone before and I jailbroke it because it made it so much better, but the question is, is rooting just as good as jailbreaking? Should I root my galaxy s4? It can sometimes be a bit laggy on the home screen and was wondering if a custom rom would fix it?

You don't need to root it, its already good enough and if the small lag bothers you, have you tried other launchers such as Nova launcher? It's almost lag free.
But if you want the best experience from your S4 then yes root it, try CF auto root, but remember you lose warranty and anything can go wrong, so try to follow instructions properly and always backup your important data.

Yes its very easy to un-root, you can always flash a stock rom via Odin, and some custom rom have an option to unroot your phone.

What about triangle away and resetting the binary counter back to zero? I think its not possible right now on i9500 variant.

Rooting all depends on your usage.
The benefits being custom roms, but again it all depends if you want to keep flashing and ensuring you always maximize the phone to its full potential.

If you don't know exact reason why you want to root your phone then rooting just for rooting makes no sense. Root access by itself won't make your device any better. Also try to remember that there are many guys here that blow their phones by messing with them.
I've rooted my old sgs2 after few months and used it that way. After some time the only thing I needed root for was the possibility to move apps data to sdcard.
My sgs4 is not rooted for now because I don't need it. Playing with mods or "removing bloatware" is total nonsense to me as I prefer stable device. Also flashing custom roms is nor for me. So widely spoken app Titanium Backup I've used maybe twice in a year, the same I can say about clockwork mod. Just have no time to mess and repair all the time because I need working device as it helps me a lot in my work as smartphone and assistant, not as subject to experiments.
Guy from that video nicely explained what is root for and all of this is definitely true (part about security can be controversial because rooting and installing su does not patch security hole and permission prompt appear only when root access is achieved by su not by security hole), but for me in everyday use it turned to be as useful as towel for a fish.
Android by itself is very good in terms of functionality and far from being restricted in a apple way. You cannot compare root to jailbreak because jb on iphone is needed to get some basic functions. Android has all of this out of the box.
Remember also that rooted phone looses OTA upgrade possibility.
Everything depends on how you use your phone - there is the answer to your question
I am the complete opposite. If I have a device running an os, whether it be a computer, smartphone or whatever, I want full control of the device and it's os as it should be. I want full axx, full power of it.
edit: forgot why I came here in the first place, to the OP, glad you liked the vid and also glad my post wasn't wasted space like the majority of posts I see on here all the time, take it easy.
Rooting all depends on your need while using s4
If you're asking yourself that question then no, you shouldn't root it.

Disappointed

Got my new Note 4 on my doorstep. From a technical standpoint, the phone is nice. Pretty fast, nice screen. But I feel let down. I really hate the stock ROM. Running Nova helps. It makes it bearable. I really thought I would like the bigger screen. But the problem is everything is just enlarged. You don't actually have more screen real estate. I have had my GS4 running Cyanogen for quite a while now and I like it. On my new Note 4 I feel very disappointed. If there isn't a root in the next few days I may return it to the store and stick with my GS4.
There won't be a way to root for a long time or ever for that matter....sorry to burst your bubble. I would suggest doing your homework before buying a device for modding. The latest is no longer the greatest from that standpoint. That being said if you want root and do not care about future updates or warranty, the Developer Edition N4 will be out soon . the downfall is you must purchase it outright and there will not be much support for it. However it is unlocked and rootable.
I thought I could get used to it. After all TouchWiz has come a long way. Many people like it. The root for all the other carriers is out. And the talk is that once the stock recoveries are posted Chainfire will be able to get it part of CF-Auto-Root.

That "talk" is wrong. cf-root works by flashing a modded recovery and installing supersu via custom scripts made by chainfire for his own personal stuff. since you guys have a locked bootloader that means you wont be flashing any recovery/boot partitions.
plus factor in L's new security and if you guys dont get root before the ota rolls out you may never get it.

whats "L's" because the N4 is KK if that refers to Lollipop.
i cant tell you how many times i have had a phone that gets the dreaded "you wont see root for a long time if ever" and then within weeks (tops) we have root.
i would be willing to wager that before Dec and probably earlier there will be root for this N4

I didnt say you wouldnt ever get root, just that when it finally gets updated to L you can kiss all chances of getting root then goodbye. i imagine someone has an exploit they are waiting to drop and see if its patched in 5.0 whether or not it becomes public is entirely up to them at that point. as it stands that is your best shot at a 4.4 root.
i dont know what OP is talking about i have 100s of apps on this thing and still flying like butta!!!

Towel root will not work. The app itself says the note 4 isnt a capable device. Maybe geohot just has to include it, but i wouldnt get your hopes up
There well be a root method within the next week or so. The bootloader will never be unlocked on this phone. Hashtag was the safestrap guru. If someone picked up the reins from him, then we'll likely get a way to flash roms and recovery. Personally, all I want is root to take some of this crap off the phone. I'm done with flashing ROMs.

I tried it, no go. Luckily it tells you that the phone isn't supported instead of just screwing it up.
I'm going to take the 12 days I have left to pray for root if not I'm going to see what I can do with a Bluetooth stylus and a nexus 6. I'm upgrading from a note 2 running Aosp Roms. I had the phone for less then an hour before it was rooted and unlocked I ran beans Roms at first but my need to be on the newest version of Android and dislike of touchwiz I found aosp Roms with apps like GMD spen control great. Currently with the N4 I miss the custom gestures to open evernote and ime switch

I like your optimism, but look at what happened to the S5 when it arrived. Took a lot more than the 2 week return window to achieve root. I'm still hedging between this phone and the Xperia, but seems like either way root will not be there quickly.

I agree, it's not terrible and not nearly as laggy as early phones were. I still use Apex so I can use icon and theme packs and make better use of screen size. All in all, if root never came, I'd be content enough to deal... it would be nice for Adaway, Titanium and Xposed though. I'll put my money down soon and see. I'm betting we get root sooner than later.
If root, or more importantly, flashing roms is that important to the OP, then why don't you go with t-mobile? Their Note 4 has an unlocked bootloader. Like another said, do your homework beforehand.

About COJ5 locked bootloader and Samsung policies.

Hi,
myself, being one happy Note 4 user, felt betrayed when Samsung locked the bootloader since COJ5 for Exynos variants, dunno about Qualcomm but I presume it's the same. Past this point we can't go back to whichever official (or custom for that matter) ROM, rendering our choices nonexistant. As far as I am concerned, we possess the phone thus we can do whatever we want, heck, I've paid a great sum of € for it! But samsung now says no-no. What gives? It isn't against the EULA afaik, and we have a crippled device now
Thoughts?
is the COK1 bootloader also locked ?

How is it crippled besides the ability to go back ?
You can root, flash kernels, flash deodex stock ROMs. and custom ROMs ? What else is there? I don't understand.
I've tried both the COL2 and COL1 recent releases on Sammobile and while I can't revert back to an earlier firmware it has affected nothing in customizing my phone.
Yeah it sucks not being able to go back. It could suck a lot more.

Flash TWRP via ODIN. Root and custom kernel via TWRP, then make a backup.
I haven't messed with Viper in a while. Been trying the other audio mods.
I'll see what I can find. I've got a COL2 deodex ROM built. Messing with other tweaks.
I've messed with a v4a mod and finally got it working on stock COJ5 with root. Now everything's working fine and savvy. Thanks for the assistance though!

All things root and Bootloader?

Hi Friends,
Hope you're all having a great new year. So last time I was lurking the S7E forums, we had a leaked Engineering Bootloader that was used to acquire root on all US Snapdragon models, albeit, with a lot performance issues and etc.
I came here to glance as well as all other variant forums for the SD model and now we have Root for every model, with even ROMs being baked like the Echo ROM for Verizon, Sprint, AT&T models, usually the toughest to achieve these things on. I'm trying to read through the forums, but I fear I'm missing the details, that will help me pull the trigger for getting the device or not.
Can one of you very experienced, knowledgeable, and kind members educate me on the latest?
1. Do we have unlocked Bootloader and Root for all US carrier S7Es? How is it done? I use people using Flashfire. So no TWRP?
2. Does this process still trip Knox and render Samsung Pay to never be used again on the device?
3. If I bought the Verizon variant, for example, can I root, unlock Bootloader, and etc, and then return to stock, to return to the store in case I don't like the phone?
4. Xposed Framework working for all models?
Much appreciate your responses, any and all of them in advance! Thanks!

Hey bud, thanks for the response! So reading through your helpful post and links, seems like not much has changed, we still are using the ENG Bootloader to do the Root?
If that is the case, three follow up questions:
1. What is the difference and how are the ROMs like Echo and TEK created with built in root? And are we only able to flash them through FlashFire due to the ENG Bootloader? If we have a engineering Bootloader, why not just install TWRP?
2. Because the ENG Bootloader works on all SD variants, does it mean there is no real benefits of buying one variant over another, example, T-Mobile over Verizon, from a Root and development perspective?
3. Last I checked, we had a ton of issues with the ENG Bootloader... Lagginess, battery issues, lack of optimizations and no updates... Have these been solved? If so, how?
Thank you again and thanks to everyone else who may help too!

It's an eng kernel that is flashed so the bootloader remains untouched. The reason for the eng kernel is reg s7 kernels don't support root. As for the performance issues and battery drain most of the performance is taken care of with a few apps like lspeed. The battery drain is still rather heavy even using amplify and greenify the screen on time is still pretty poor the stand by drain is mostly taken care off tho.

Sorry, you're right Sir, the Eng kernel. Hmm... seems like still a pretty clunky solution for us Root (junkies?)
I just got excited when I saw the Echo ROM and people flashing through FlashFire. Also, I thought the U Firmware also allowed for some more flexibility? Basically allowing for any variant available to be used on any carrier and helped the Rooting case too?
Thanks again!

The U firmware has no very little bloat and has be used for the echoe rom for sprint carrier. It's a fairly long process to get echoe on sprint. But yeah I use the U firmware and I'm rooted on the latest firmware. It's a bit more of a pain to root the pl3 but I can't downgrade my Bootloader to an easier firmware. And your welcome it's np at all
