still contact option unfixed - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been on almost all galaxy handsets and so far i have seen one major flaw still present. In contact app you have "contacts to display" and i select customized list.. but ever since you punch Facebook and select "sync only contacts already existing" it still pushes all the fb contacts and then its impossible to keep customized option as it comes back to "all contacts" the moment u exit app....
any one know how to fix this bug....

Facebook sync not working - cal syncs, but not contacts

Since a couple of days I have been unable to sync the contacts with the internal facebook app.
It always says that it is currently experiencing problems and is highly annoying!
Calendar sync works though.
Anyone got the same problem? A solution?
I am running the jp3 firmware, but also reflashing to jm5 produced the same problem.

Same problem here. Been like that for a week or so now.
I switched to Phonebook 2.0 from market. Think its better than the stock app and FB sync works.
But hope they fix that FB sync thing soon. It´s getting pretty annoying.
Maybe you should use Phonebook 2.0 to find a defect friend's name. When you link your Gmail contacts to Facebook contacts in Phonebook 2.0, you may find someone who have some strange things. For me, I have some friends who have their last-name 'null' instead of the real one. So, I decide to delete these friends and then I can sync agian.
Found this at androidforums earlier in the week when I was having this problem, and it worked for me. I can't post links, apparently, but to give credit, it's from airmanjerm over there (androidforums dot com slash samsung-captivate slash 127442-link-facebook-friend-photo-contact dot html).
1. Start the CONTACTS app.
2. Click on "Contacts" at the very top.
3. Pick a person in your contacts list who is also in your Facebook friends. Select their name and it opens their entry in your phone's contacts list. For this, we'll select "John Smith." (How original!)
4. Touch the MENU button in the very bottom left of the phone.
5. Select "Link Contact"
6. At the top, select "Get Friends"
7. Select your Facebook account. (If you don't see it, you'll have to be sure your phone is logged into your Facebook account.)
8. Your phone will pull up all your friends from your FB friends list. Although you're technically only trying to link John Smith, go ahead and select all the friends you want to import to your phone altogether. (Or just select all at the top.) This will save you a couple steps later.
9. Click "Save" at the bottom.
10. After a few seconds or a minute's worth of "importing," the phone will go back a screen. Here you will see all your imported Facebook friends that you just imported. Scroll down to "John Smith" and select that Facebook profile to link it to your phonebook entry.
11. An AMAZING feature here is that when the phone imports all your friends from Facebook, it automatically links your phone contacts with their Facebook profile IF they have either the same exact name, or the same phone number or other similar contact info.
12. For those that don't automatically link, repeat steps 1-10, omitting steps 6-9 since you've already imported them from Facebook.

Just tried it.
Can't even do that. When the sync error appears FB is grayed out in get friends.
You can also try syncmypix from the market... With this its possible to link contacts pictures from facebook to your phonebook contacts.
We'll have to wait until facebook fixes this failure.

i have the same issue. can't click on get friends since facebook is greyed out in contacts.
It started working for me.
found this while searching around, well I messed up and linked some stuff wrong, and just removed the facebook account...
Well story is I just got this phone,
added facebook account for the widget that came on phone, no contact sync
later installed facebook from market
then today tried to sync contacts with failure
After I deleted the facebook account, I went to add back and noticed two options for adding facebook accounts, one that says "Intergrated contact accounts" and one under "more accounts" I tried the one under intergrated and it seems to be working without having to do any work arounds...
If anyone is getting gray facebook when doing "get friends" make sure in Settings->Accounts & Sync->Facebook that contact sync is enabled.
maybe this will help
(welcome my first post in the array of Galaxy S forums, been using androind on my old ATT Tilt and finally upgraded)

There is definitely a way to show only Google contacts, but I believe you need to select Groups in order to do that. Groups, then Google.
I know, the Contacts program leaves a lot to be desired.
Its easy to filter the contacts.
Quickest:-
Load Contacts, click the menu button and then select Display Options and unselect the sources you don't want.
Longer way-
Link you contacts so it only shows them once.

And best way as lamatrast wrote, in setting you can select 1. Phone 2. Sim card 3. or google account.
The root cause of the problem is that the Samsung Contacts app, which the manufacturer installed as a substitute for the stock Android Contacts app, is screwed up. (Search the Galaxy S forums for "contacts" and find many similar complaints.)
Users new to Android may not notice, but veteran Android/Gmail users do. Samsung tried to do-Google-ize contacts on the Android and invent their own design paradigm derived from dumb feature phones, and just made an unholy mess. The app does not respect the grouping of Gmail contacts when it syncs.
The Samsung app cannot be uninstalled, but you can try to use a third-party contacts app in lieu of it as your interface. I use Contacts Evolved. It's a little buggy, but better than the Samsung app that completely fails in this regard.

[Q] Where do new contacts go?

I'm having a really bizarre problem with my G2. I can enter and save a new contact in my phone, however, when I try to look for that contact to call/text they do not appear in the list of contacts. It's almost as if I never entered the info at all except if the contact calls/texts me their name will appear then.
Has anyone experienced this same problem and if so how did you correct it? I'll mention I did port all my numbers over to this phone in the T-Mobile store using the hardware device for data transfer (and it seems not all of them made it over).
I had that same issue on my G1. If I added them from the phone - it wouldn't show in my text drop down. They all seem to work now that I switched. Go to Gmail and play with the groups that the contacts are in - see if that helps. Maybe you need to have your phone display all the groups instead of a select few.
I had this problem too. Go into Contacts>Menu>Display Options>Your Google Account and make sure the system group "My Contacts" is checked.

I looked and "My Contacts" is selected as well as "Imported Contacts" was already selected. Hmm...well I checked all the other boxes in my Google Account and it has seemed to correct the problem.

No "Select all" option for email

This thing is annoying me for a while now in froyo and gingerbread and to my surprise Honeycomb is lacking a "Select all" option in the email app (not sure about GMAIL).
The regular email app is missing select all. So lets say you want to clean up your Trash folder with 500+ deleted emails you have to sit there and select them one by one.
You will think an "empty this folder" or "Empty Trash" option will be there to save your day but yeap this option is missing too...

You're preaching to the choir here. Since this is a stock google experience device we get what google gives us and their email application is great but that one feature simply hangs out of reach again and again.
I'm hoping that some day they impliment this.
Here's a dirty alternative: Delete your account and re-add it. It's (presumably) synchronized from a server right? All your mail, contacts and calendar items will come back but your trash will be gone

Contacts App filtering question

Does anyone know if there is a way to add the filtering options to the contacts app instead of just the contacts in the dialler area?
Samsung seem to have removed the "display only contacts with phone numbers" from the contacts app... which means when I sync the phone with my google account, it syncs ALL my gmail contacts down as well.
So my contacts app is flooded with hundreds of contacts with random names and email addresses from Gmail that I rarely use, and it takes me ages to navigate through to find the contact I want to call or message. In the grand scheme of things, it's a minor annoyance really... but it's something i really hate about this phone now and it makes me dread opening the contacts app.
Just wondering if it's an option I've missed somewhere or if anyone knows a workaround for it?
Unfortunately there is no other option than installing and using another contacts+dialer app from the Google Play store...
that what i thought... damn, i hate using third party contacts / dialler options
hopefully some helpful developer will add the option to a custom rom so i can actually look at my contacts app without dread lol
My S7E has the option to only show contacts with numbers. Maybe your carrier removed it for some reason? Can't see why though?
In the phone app, go to More > Settings > and there's an option near the top for only contacts with numbers.
AFAIK that option is available only in the phone dialer screen, not in the contact list settings, but maybe once selected in the dialer settings it's also working for the contact list.
I'm using a third party contacts+dialer app so I can't test myself.
Ahhh, sorry, I misread the OP. You're right, it's only for the dialler contacts list, not the Contacts app itself.
You can choose a customised list, where you can select what users you want to see. That might be good enough?
