There is definitely a way to show only Google contacts, but I believe you need to select Groups in order to do that. Groups, then Google.
I know, the Contacts program leaves a lot to be desired.
Its easy to filter the contacts.
Quickest:-
Load Contacts, click the menu button and then select Display Options and unselect the sources you don't want.
Longer way-
Link you contacts so it only shows them once.

And best way as lamatrast wrote, in setting you can select 1. Phone 2. Sim card 3. or google account.
The root cause of the problem is that the Samsung Contacts app, which the manufacturer installed as a substitute for the stock Android Contacts app, is screwed up. (Search the Galaxy S forums for "contacts" and find many similar complaints.)
Users new to Android may not notice, but veteran Android/Gmail users do. Samsung tried to do-Google-ize contacts on the Android and invent their own design paradigm derived from dumb feature phones, and just made an unholy mess. The app does not respect the grouping of Gmail contacts when it syncs.
The Samsung app cannot be uninstalled, but you can try to use a third-party contacts app in lieu of it as your interface. I use Contacts Evolved. It's a little buggy, but better than the Samsung app that completely fails in this regard.

When I add new contacts I always save them as Google contacts but when people call me and I don't have their numbers, I save them and they save as phone contacts for some reason. Is there any way to "copy all phone contacts to Google contacts"?
There is an App called ContactSync (free in market) which converts all your "phone contacts" to "google contacts". I spend a couple of hours yesterday sorting my contacts and set em up with google.com/contacts (first time). It was a pain in the as but worked out good in the end. The app does the job but have been reported instable on some Hero's.
However:I have another problem. It's fine that all my old contacts now are google contacts. But, when I create a new contact on my HTC Magic, theres no way to create a google contact (which it must be to be sync-able). The only options I have under "Contact Type" is SIM or Phone. I've googled my brains out but haven't found a way to create a google contact from the phone.
If someone knows a solution to this problem, please let me know.
Good Luck

I read the comments for ContactSync and it seems like everyone who has a Hero (which is what I have) had major problems with it, so I didn't want to risk it. I only have a couple of Phone contacts, is there any way to just manually copy them or re-save them?

No idea, Hero has "Google contact" as the default option. Maybe if you flash a newer rom the developer will have included it, it seems a little stupid for an Android phone to not allow Google contacts.
No idea what's wrong. First time I booted my Android phone it grabbed the contacts off my SIM and synced them to my Google account. Now I can make a contact in Gmail or in Android and it syncs to both.
Maybe make sure you have Contacts sync on in Settings -> Data Sync?
Or I don't know how to use it properly. I go into my contact list and hit the groups tab. I create a new group and hit save. It doesn't show up. I then try to create it again and it says it already exists, but still doesn't show up.
Even the default groups that show up (google and something else) I can't figure out how to add someone to that group. Does anyone know how to get this function to work properly?
I haven't got it to work either.
Bump
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
To add member on the default group, all your contacts must be stored in the phone memory. If its not there, then you need to export your contacts first then import them back but make sure you import them to the phone memory.
But be aware that you will have multiple entries on your phone book especially when it was originally synced to gmail.
It's a vexing issue and a bit complex to fix manually. But...there's an app for that..
search the Market for "Groupy"
I have to say that sucks. when an android with google doesnt grap your contacts the way you have them on your google account.. that just sucks.
this is the first time I have ever complained about this phone. or maybe its samsung that I should be complaining about. but one of the reasons I started using android was the easy way to manage contact information. that is just something that should not be messed with.
k.. done *****in
What I found after doing a factory reset was that *if* you manually made a few contacts on the phone and placed them in categories and *then* sync'd google contacts they would import correctly.
But still it's an annoyance easily fixed by "Groupy" in about a minute.

Absolutely! The Contacts app that Samsung installed in place of the regular Android Contacts app totally hoses the Google-based contacts. I am swamped by unwanted download of a "contact" item for anyone who ever mailed my GMail address, and Google contact groups are not supported. The stock Android Contacts app handled this gracefully, allowing configuration of which groups of Google contacts get downloaded and synced. But Samsung tried to de-Google Contacts, and screwed everything up.
Is there any hope of reinstalling or renabling the original Android Contacts app instead (hopefully without rooting the phone)? Perhaps a third-party solution?
Try third-party app called Contacts Evolved
I have been exploring third-party contact apps in Market.
At first blush, the free app called Contacts Evolved seems to help here. It does segregate the contacts downloaded from Google according to the Google/GMail groups (including starred contacts) into handy tabs. The spurious contacts such as those who just happened to send you mail will still be there, but if you keep your real Google contacts organized into groups, the groups will be respected and displayed separately in the app.
I don't know of any way to disable or uninstall the brain-dead Samsung Contacts app, which I believe handles the syncing. But AFAIK, I never have to use it and can use Contacts Evolved instead.
EDIT: On the downside, Contacts Evolved seems a little buggy. There are force-close issues.
I'm having a really bizarre problem with my G2. I can enter and save a new contact in my phone, however, when I try to look for that contact to call/text they do not appear in the list of contacts. It's almost as if I never entered the info at all except if the contact calls/texts me their name will appear then.
Has anyone experienced this same problem and if so how did you correct it? I'll mention I did port all my numbers over to this phone in the T-Mobile store using the hardware device for data transfer (and it seems not all of them made it over).
I had that same issue on my G1. If I added them from the phone - it wouldn't show in my text drop down. They all seem to work now that I switched. Go to Gmail and play with the groups that the contacts are in - see if that helps. Maybe you need to have your phone display all the groups instead of a select few.
I had this problem too. Go into Contacts>Menu>Display Options>Your Google Account and make sure the system group "My Contacts" is checked.

I looked and "My Contacts" is selected as well as "Imported Contacts" was already selected. Hmm...well I checked all the other boxes in my Google Account and it has seemed to correct the problem.
Hey Guys....
When i send a email from my gmail account (on a PC) if that email address is not in my gmail contacts it gets created as a contact on my phone !!
I'm not sure if this motoblur doing this or is it gmail. a contact isn't created in my gmail contacts just in the contacts of my atrix. when i click on the new contact it says it's a linked contact from google.
anyone else experience this....is there a setting i'm missing ??
go to contacts, hit the menu button, select more, settings, then click phone numbers only.

that option doesn't exist....when i go to contacts -> menu -> more -> settings all it has are two sections "new contacts" and "sim card contacts" with checkboxes to enable them or not. I don't see "phone numbers only".

This!!!
Also, I heard Google is going to end that annoying thing where contacts are automatically added. I hate flashing a new ROM or reloading my Contacts list to see a bunch of stupid email addresses everywhere. I'm a neat freak.

Bell Atrix? I'm on the AT&T one.
i assure you it is there for me. Try stumbling though all the contact settings.
Its not there for bell users. something i discovered as I have 200+contacts that are in there that aren't in my contacts.
Gmail (via your pc) now has the option to stop from saving email addresses to your contacts. Along with that you can delete those other contacts from there (if you don't need them) I ended up saving the ones I knew I'd use for sure and deleting the rest.
This is one of those little things that I noticed right away and really bugs me - why would Bell/motorola take this feature out? It's so useful.

good...i'm glad it wasn't just me (yes i'm on a bell atrix). Thanx for your help guys
funny thing was i came from a nexus one and they have the option to do "phone numbers only" too.
I love the atrix for a number of things, but sometimes i miss the simple bare bones of the nexus one interface....or as some call it "the pure google experience"
same here with the N1 and that was turned on by default. also the ability to show contacts by groups was nice to have. not sure why manufacturers take stuff away from the "pure experience" and not just focus on adding stuff to it.
Does anyone know if there is a way to add the filtering options to the contacts app instead of just the contacts in the dialler area?
Samsung seem to have removed the "display only contacts with phone numbers" from the contacts app... which means when I sync the phone with my google account, it syncs ALL my gmail contacts down as well.
So my contacts app is flooded with hundreds of contacts with random names and email addresses from Gmail that I rarely use, and it takes me ages to navigate through to find the contact I want to call or message. In the grand scheme of things, it's a minor annoyance really... but it's something i really hate about this phone now and it makes me dread opening the contacts app.
Just wondering if it's an option I've missed somewhere or if anyone knows a workaround for it?
Unfortunately there is no other option than installing and using another contacts+dialer app from the Google Play store...
that what i thought... damn, i hate using third party contacts / dialler options
hopefully some helpful developer will add the option to a custom rom so i can actually look at my contacts app without dread lol
My S7E has the option to only show contacts with numbers. Maybe your carrier removed it for some reason? Can't see why though?
In the phone app, go to More > Settings > and there's an option near the top for only contacts with numbers.
AFAIK that option is available only in the phone dialer screen, not in the contact list settings, but maybe once selected in the dialer settings it's also working for the contact list.
I'm using a third party contacts+dialer app so I can't test myself.
Ahhh, sorry, I misread the OP. You're right, it's only for the dialler contacts list, not the Contacts app itself.
You can choose a customised list, where you can select what users you want to see. That might be good enough?
