[Q] CM11 Nightlies how stable? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello all...
My boyfriend has the S4 for AT&T and loves the setup I have on my S3 with CM11 nightlies. Just curious as to how stable they are for the S4. I'm the Android nerd in the relationship and I don't want him to have any issues, since we don't live together.. yet
Or should I put another KK rom I saw over in the development section? Is CM10/JB more stable? How's the battery drain? I want to improve his phone, not give him problems LOL. He's completely stock right now.
I already know how to root and all that, I don't need instructions just advice for the best AOSP ROM/Kernel out there for this device.
Thanks in advance!

Depends on which firmware your boyfriend's phone has. Unless he is on the older firmware 4.2 MDL, there is no way to flash any AOSP rom, custom kernel, or even custom recoveries except Safestrap recovery.
With safestrap recovery, you can only flash certain touchwiz roms.

I'll have to check it out when I see him in a cpl days

Personally...I prefer custom tw roms on this phone..tw is actually better looking and more polished...and alot more features...check out Graviton 1.7

Graviton Rom 1.7

I spent a few days messing around with a CM11 1/10 nightly, 1/12 nightly, and the M2 snapshot.
I was really quite impressed with just how smooth everything looked and felt.
Definitely a step up from CM 10.2 and 4.3-based Carbon builds.
I had best results with the 1/12 nightly and the M2 snapshot.
I was experiencing odd reboots and glitches with the 1/10 nightly.
Mine is a pre-MF3 phone, obviously.

rule of thumb with nightlies is that they are not always an indication of an official release. You could get a bad nightly but the nightly before was fine. So far they are fine and nightlies are generally for flash-oholics

Yep. If you're deadset on a relatively hands-free CM11, I think the M2 snapshot is probably the best bet.

OK so I took a screenshot of his system info and sent it to myself LOL
Baseband I337UCUAMDL
Kernel 3.4.0-453947 [email protected] #1
Build Number JDQ39.I337UCUAMDL
Is this the firmware you were referring to? I asked him if he did any system updates and he said he has not.

Yes, that's the right firmware. You can go ahead and use CASUAL, and then flash whatever you like for him.

[Q] Bought S4 yesterday. Have questions about rooted phone and updates..

I bought S4 yesterday.. rooted it and installed Wicked V4.
I'm not sure if my phone was updated to MF9 already.
My question is, since Wicked M4 is an MDL based ROM, if I go to "about my device" and I do in fact have MF9 installed, will it appear MDL since I have an MDL based rom installed, or will it show MF9 despite that?
Also, I read a 20+ thread and it's like half and half. Some people say it's not necessary to do a software/firmware update on your phone and to just install the newest and latest ROM, what are your thoughts?
And if I do want my phone to stay updated with the latest software/firmware, how do I do this? I did read somewhere that people said to flash a stock-based rom and do an update and then re-flash whatever custom rom, but, how do I know which is a stock-based rom? (lol) also, is that the correct way to updated your phone when you're rooted and are running a custom rom? Thanks!
Just install the latest Rom unless other wise directed in the instructions of the Rom.

And wicked is a port from Verizon I believe where MDL was an ota for both sprint and Verizon.

[Q] [Question]I337M S4 Running Parandroid? Stable?

Hi xda members!
i am a noOb when it comes to anything android. Just switched from iOS. I did however manage to softbrick my s4 when attempting to flash the latest pacman rom for jfltecan. Nevertheless in the end I managed to restore to stock TW via Kies and factory reset. Guess what i'm asking is that is there a stable (daily driver stable) version of parandroid for Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M on Fido(rogers) in canada? I'm really looking forward to using the Halo))) function on the rom, i just love pie control. I was running CM 10.1 and it's a fantastic rom, but i'm looking for more features and no bloat ware. Thanks!
Another Question: Can i run i9505 roms on my i337m phone? from what i've read, it's definitely possible, after all the i337/m are the same as the i9505.
Both pacman and paranoids nightlies right now are 4.3. A few people are having boot issues on the 4.3 for pacman and had to switch from TWRP to another recovery to get the nightlies working

What's wrong with TWRT? Should I switch to CWM? Can someone confirm that parandriod is working on i337m?
Okey so I can confirm that PA 3.96 jfltecan is working 95% of the time. So far so good... I did have to pull out the battery and hard restart a couple of times. I got stuck on blank welcome freaked me out. But just give it give minutes. I'm running CWM latest recovery. Tried TRW? (Sry forgot the spelling) got stuck on bootloop. BTW pacman and PA 4.3 didn't work for i337m as of today.

Custom 4.3 Touchwiz rom's and old bootloader

As title, looking for the 4.3 touchwiz based rom's that work with the old bootloader.
Almost all custom roms you can flash from recovery won't update your bootloader. I recommend omega.
Read OP of any rom and you will sure notice that the bootloader will remain untouched after flashing.

There will be no issues like lack of sound, wifi etc?
Been using GE roms since the new bootloader was introduced but I have read posts from users having problems flashing new firmware with old bootloader, or is that just for the official roms?
As long as you have the latest modem (MJ5) there won't be any issues.

I'm already using that modem so might just give it a try.
Thanks for the help.
Be sure to have the latest philz touch and you're good to go!
Flashed Omega V19, all working.
Definitely not as smooth as the GE roms but it 's not bad, also it's nice to have the Samsung Camera back again.
Also give echoe rom ago, I'm on old bootloader and mk9 modem, working much better than 4.2.2 stock

Thanks, might give that a try as Omega just started rebooting randomly..
Will try another kernel, if that doesn't fix it then ill try echoe.
All custom roms since 4.3 gave me random reboots once every couple of days.
I'm currently running omega v19 and the uptime is 48h.
Well I got Omega stable with KT kernel, but found the lag a bit annoying so tried echoe rom anyway.
Sadly the lag is much the same, I guess it's a feature of touchwiz and nothing can be done about it.
Why havent Samsung fixed this? it's almost the same as the original roms that phone shipped with.

[Q] Running Malladus 1.2.5 w/4.2.2

Hey guys
I'm running Malladus 1.2.5 w/ android 4.2.2. on my VWZ lgg2 with twrp recovery.
Im getting a few wakelock problems, along with some random hang ups, so I want to upgrade to Malladus 1.2.7. I started backing all my data up via titanium root. Now my question: Should I just wipe everything via TWRP and install Malladus 1.2.7 or should I find a way to unroot completely and upgrade to android 4.4.2, then reroot and install .7 Malladus.
I'm just really confused as where I should be with this phone in terms of 4.2.2 vs 4.4.2, and how hard it would to upgrade to 4.4.2 in my current situation while still keeping my backed up data.
Thanks!
Verizon has not released an OTA yet. Malladus is still on 4.2.2. If you want to upgrade to the latest version, just wipe everything but your internal storage and install the newest version.
If you want to try 4.4.2, the custom ROMs are getting very stable now. I'd suggest LiquidSmooth or the latest Mahdi. I'm using Mahdi (with furnace kernel) and it has knockon, no call echo, and I haven't had any SODs so far - I've been using the newest version 3 days now.

Wow, huge mistake on my part thinking that 4.4.2 was out on VZW! I'll have to give Mahdi a go, reading up on it now. But as a follow up question, when VZW does release an OTA, could I do it with my custom rom and root?

No, you'd probably need to use the LG flash tool to go back to stock and then update. Personally I don't think that's worth it. There are ways to take the OTA and keep root, but you won't be able to use a custom recovery until it's loki patched again. I suggest waiting until devs incorporate 4.4.2 features into the ROMs so you don't risk losing root and so you don't have to wait for an exploit.

What to do next after Cyanogenmod?

Hi I have an unrooted Samsung Galaxy S4 I9505 on Cyanogenmod M11, Was on UK VOD stock but moved to Cyanogenmod which is still on 4.4.4 KitKat but I'm a bit worried about future development of CGM. I read about tussles with other companies and big aspirations for M12 but the regular updates I've been enjoying have died out. not even a lollipop stable yet, I'm beginning to lose hope.
I know I shouldn't be so skeptical but I want to explore other roots (no pun intended).
Currently which rom would provide me with a stable lollipop with regular OTA updates for future proofing my phone?
Thanks v much
Alternatively I guess I could go back to stock to get lollipop but haven't done it in a while Im guessing I just flash a stock image via odin
Those tensions don't really affect Cyanogenmod, though I understand your concern. However, the biggest issue you're going to have is that most - if not all - custom ROMs are built using Cyanogenmod as a base. Realistically, the only alternative available I can think of without going to Touchwiz is Danvdh/Kryten's GPE ROM. Going back to Touchwiz is a dead end. Samsung has stated that Android 5.x is the end of the line for the S4, meaning there will be no Android M unless using a custom ROM.
Thanks very much for the excellent advice. I will give Danvdh/Kryten's GPE ROM a go and see how I go. I'm going to post the link to the ROM thread if anyone is following the same route as me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2557353
EDIT: I'm going to try http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9505-orig-develop/rom-cyanogenmod-12-t2943934 first as its CM 12 lollipop which is what I was looking for really but will try GPE if i dont like that rom
Another question... sorry: i currently have CWM on my phone but the CM rom says to use TWRP with F2FS does cwm have this or do i need to remove CWM and install TWRP?

Don't use that version of CM. It's not what you want because it's not updated anymore.
Use this version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...lop/exclusive-antaresone-alucard24-s-t3066696
or the Official nightlies.
I used the older one but realised too late (
got stuck with no gapps and the bloody thing wouldnt boot into recovery cwm or twrp :/ never had that before. so having to do stock flash It's failed twice LOL
EDIT: got it stocked well thats something at least. anyway tomorrow I'll try again and get TWRP on there properly, it was weird because cyanogemod had installed CWM on there before i couldnt get rid of it :/ so i ended up with no recovery manager doh! Thanks for the link Lenny
