I bought S4 yesterday.. rooted it and installed Wicked V4.
I'm not sure if my phone was updated to MF9 already.
My question is, since Wicked M4 is an MDL based ROM, if I go to "about my device" and I do in fact have MF9 installed, will it appear MDL since I have an MDL based rom installed, or will it show MF9 despite that?
Also, I read a 20+ thread and it's like half and half. Some people say it's not necessary to do a software/firmware update on your phone and to just install the newest and latest ROM, what are your thoughts?
And if I do want my phone to stay updated with the latest software/firmware, how do I do this? I did read somewhere that people said to flash a stock-based rom and do an update and then re-flash whatever custom rom, but, how do I know which is a stock-based rom? (lol) also, is that the correct way to updated your phone when you're rooted and are running a custom rom? Thanks!
Just install the latest Rom unless other wise directed in the instructions of the Rom.

And wicked is a port from Verizon I believe where MDL was an ota for both sprint and Verizon.

If you are already rooted with custom recovery everything you need to upgrade your device to rooted stock MF9 is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357471
Just follow the steps in post #2 and you will be current on everything.

Newbie here. I rooted the S4 a couple of months ago. Now that 4.3 is out, can experts post some step-by-step guide on how to upgrade it on rooted devices? Thanks.
Are you sure you want to update? Why not just flash a 4.3.1 rom to your device instead and stock to AMDL firmware.
However if it hasn't manually updated to MF3 you can go into your settings and search for updates, or it should automatically update on it's own. The only thing that would prevent it would be if you've flashed a non TW based ROM, changed the framework + kernel, or froze there processes needed to update. Just a stand alone root won't prevent it.

I am not on MF3. I tried to install the AT&T minor update before, but it failed twice. I did freeze some stock apps. If I unfreeze those apps, the automatic update should work then? That's very good to know. Thanks!

Just to be clear you never got/took the OTA update to mf3?
If you still have the mdl bootloader then you will be able to update to a new rom that is based off the new att firmware MJ6 soon. I would wait until a good rom is out to flash rather than getting any OTA update. Once you go to mf3 firmware you cannot go back to a previous firmware and you are limited on what can be flashed to your phone. If you take the new OTA (whenever att actually releases it) you will be stuck on that firmware and not able to go back to a previous firmware.
So like in my situation I have the mdb or mdl bootloader still, rooted, and I can flash any rom I want whether it is a mdl/mf3/ international firmware/ or when available the MJ6 firmware. All of this is harder/not able to do if you ever get OTA updates.

I never got the MF3 update. As I mentioned, I did try it twice, but the update failed, either because I froze some apps, or because I installed the CWM custom recovery. It's good to hear that it is actually a good thing. I noticed that the 4.3 firmware is out (the general forum), should I just install that one? How should I start? Thanks.

What until one of the devs creates a flashable zip that you can flash in cwm. It'll probably be only a couple of days now that the leak is out.
I stayed on 4.2.2 rooted with TWRP and never took the MJA/MK2 OTAs, to avoid knox. I've been waiting for KitKat, and I'm ready to take the plunge. I've read through a bunch of threads, and have thoroughly confused myself. I have a few basic questions, so I can determine what my options are:
1) Is it possible to go from MF9 (rooted) to NAE, and retain my data? What happens to the modifications I made to MF9 (hotspot, xposed, etc.)?
2) If the answer to 1 is no, is it reasonable to assume that there will be a flashable NAE rom in the near future, so that I wouldn't have to odin to MK2 before going through the OTA update to NAE?
3) Should I give up on trying to keep my existing bootloader, and just suck it up and take knox? It seems like there's probably enough differences in the rom and modem that the bootloader is probably a necessary evil at this point.
Thanks in advance for your help.
There have been several reports of people whose WiFi and data have worked just fine with the NAE ROM plus older bootloader like MF9. I'd wait until a stock rooted NAE ROM appears so we can try it with the knox-free MF9 bootloader.

I am in the same situation and currently on a stock rooted MF9 with a custom recovery as well. I would like to know the best upgrade path to 4.4.2 and hopefully stay on a knox free boot loader.

Once Warboy releases the updated stock, rooted NAE, I'm gonna flash it with Philz recovery to see whether everything's compatible with the Knox-free MF9 bootloader. In the meanwhile, I'm gonna flash just the NAE modem. Cant wait for Kitkat~! (Even though I've had the 4.4.2 update for a long time through my Nexus 5, I'm still very excited, LOL~)

on MF9 , didnt even go to 4.3, still sitting at 4.2.2 (with the update icon in my status bar, but i assume its for 4.3 not kit kat)
Im rooted and have exposed installed
would rather have a knox free loader too!
if anybody can advise on the best route to take would be lovely
would like to have kit kat on my phone today!!
I was on this boat but last night flashed the gummy Rom. It is okay but I would love to have the stock Rom. I don't like few things on the Gummy.

Lol I've been wondering if anyone else stayed on 4.2.2. Lol Im rooted with custom recovery. I hit the update button the other night and it wouldn't install and that icon went away, so I got that going for me. But I can't wait for kit kat, just waiting on the whole knox deal.

Yeah I have MF9 and I could keep the same.
I had issues with BT connection with my BMW but works fine with BT headset.
Home screen kind of wacky and you can't select the one that you like.
I just went back to 4.2.2 again until I find a good one.
Yikes
I'm in the same situation, living on my phone with MF9, have TWRP/Custom Recovery installed, and am interested to upgrade to Kitkat. I'm very interested to know what will be the upgrade method for me to 4.4.2, similar to many others in this thread.
I'm on slimkat now and all is working great. Only drawback is no theme chooser

Which KitKat rom did you use? Did it just upgrade your OS or did you have to start from a clean install? Any issues with Knox?

i used Slimkat, but it froze occasionally. now im on CM 11 and its FLAWLESS
did clean install (but had some apps backed up with Titanium)
to my knowledge the whole Knox thing is with Touchwiz based roms
both slimkat and CM 11 are not,so no worries about Knox
I am still on MF9 modem and bootloader
gonna get around to flashing the NAE modem later though

Alright. I'm personally looking to update only to official rom and NAE modem, not custom rom. Hoping I can do upgrade instead of clean install but hoping to get root access back or keep it at least.
Ok so i dont think i care about the knox thing anymore.. So with that said i would like to upgrade to 4.4.2 with the stock sprint rom. What is the best way to go about that? Sorry im just confused with the bootloader and modem flashes.. Its been awhile since ive had a samsung phone.. Im assuming i cant do the OTA due to TWRP....
I am running completely stock and rooted with saferoot,
4.2.2
baseband mf9
bootloader mf9
TWRP installed
please help
Can you just unroot and install the NAE ota then reroot with cf auto root? This is coming from stock rooted mk2.
I've been putting it off for a while. I'm flashed to cwm and still on TouchWiz. Is there a particular method to doing this system update? I want to get on kitkat and keep my root, or at least be able to get root access again afterwards.
Goes look in development section. .unknown has a stock rooted...random has a stock unrooted that's easy to root

I don't know what this means, in particular. Can you link me to something? I ran cyanogenmod up to 11 when my s3 died and have been out of the community for a bit. I just want to put the OTA kitkat update onto my phone and then get root.

You can get on kitkat if you flash a kitkat rom or by odining stock NAE tar file (Please note that this will give you knox bootloader). If you visit Sacs Custom Rom 4.4.2 kitkat rom (link in my signature below). It will explain how to go from a previous version to his kitkat rom.
Basically, in a nutshell...you need to have the NAE modem (which is explained in the thread) and specific recoveries to use during flashing. Visit the thread to find out more
4.2.2 / MDL here. I'm rooted to freeze the metric ton of bloatware/greenify/xposed. Didn't get into ROMs because I'm afraid of bricking my only phone.
Been sidelined for several months with health issues, wondering if there's been any new stuff down the pipeline or if I should stay at 4.2.2/MDL? TIA.
Sliced bread has come out. Jk, given the time taken for someone to answer you, nothing new has come out that's earth shaking. Other than new firmware. If everything works for you it probably isn't worth upgrading.
You're on mdl which allows you to flash a number of different roms which you aren't taking advantage of. The latest firmware, nc1, is rootable with towel root. You can flash touch wiz based roms but that doesn't seem to be an interest to you So you might consider updating to nc1 if you want the latest firmware. But many people would like to be in your shoes with mdl firmware.

If you have root and custom recovery (TWRP or CWM) and want to update to newer firmware I would suggest Sho-Stock-i V7.0 Then you w I uld have the newest firmware without having to use Safestrap and be limited to what you can do with your phone.
I would STAY AWAY from updating to the newest firmware (stock firmware) NC1 as right now you can do ANYTHING you want with your phone. That is why I suggested ShoStock to have the best of both worlds. Personally there is NOT MUCH different between your MDL 4.2.2 firmware and the newest 4.4.2 firmwares. Maybe a little smoother.

Would reception be better with 4.4.2? We recently took a road trip and on a very long stretch my hubby on 4.4.2 had coverage the whole time while I had 0 service for about 1/2 of the stretch. Other areas he was pulling data fine while my phone showed no service or a G and up and down arrows which was completely new to me. It's bizarre.

If you are still in fact on MDL then you can get TWRP or CWM recovery and flash as I stated above. You can use ShoStock-i once you have a custom recovery. First VERIFY you have MDL bootloaders. Then if you do look into "Motochopper +Loki" which will give you the custom recovery. Then flash to ShoStock-i. Then you can flash any of the modems in my thread to find which works best for your phone in your area. Maybe see which "baseband" (baseband=Modem) your husbands phone has (if it is also a i337 S4).

You do NOT need to update to run ShoStock. Just flash his newest in recovery (TWRP/ cwm/etc.) It will give you the newer firmware of 4.4.2 but NOT give you the 4.4.2 bootloader. So you can always flash back to your MDL stock firmware via odin. Like I said, the best of both worlds. Keeping the bypassed bootloader while running newer firmware. Just use ShoStock 8.1 (NOT THE SAFESTRAP VERSION)
Been trying to read and figure out as much as I can, but I'm lost. I rooted my phone right when I got it a few months after release. I have the MDL firmware and I'm running stock that I've modified to my liking. I rooted using motochopper, I have TB and SU and I have TWRP installed. I'm ready to take the jump and try to get an updated firmware, but don't know where to look. It seems a lot of the info in now for the newer firmwares.
I would like to run either Google edition or a modified TouchWiz I think. I like keeping things pretty clean and fast. I am currently running Aviate on top of TouchWiz and I like the clean organized feel of it, although a bit laggy.
Please help me XDA, sorry I know this is a newb post. I've been blocking the OTAs for over a year and I'm ready to move on.
First I would suggest NOT to use any STOCK firmware to update to 4.4.2
There are some newer Google Edition Roms I believe in the ATT original ANDROID SECTION. You can use them since you have twrp recovery. Those with newer firmware cannot use the latest google edition Roms unless they are made for safestrap.
Or if you want a modified stock Touchwiz with all the extra benefits you can flash directly to ShoStock-i 8.1 which is 4.4.2 based.
Keeping you MDL bootloader and the Loki bootloader bypass you have now let's you flash ANYTHING you want, including kernels.
If you update firmwares the bootloader becomes MORE LOCKED DOWN and you cannot flash any Roms that need a modified kernel like aosp based Roms, or any kernel other than stock.
Thank you ill check those roms out. I am aware that I DO NOT want to update my firmware, that's part of the reason I asked for advice, to see which roms work well with MDL. Most of what I found was all for newer FW versions.

Sorry I haven't tried OUDHS so I cannot comment. But TWRP still works perfectly. For ShoStock you would NOT need to flash Loki-Doki patch or anything. The kernel in ShoStock-i is already Loki patched. If you plan on trying other Roms it is always best to keep the Loki-Doki flashable zip on your sdcard and flash it after flashing a ROM. Just extra insurance that won't hurt anything if the ROM is already lokified.
Ok going to try flashing this
