Hi all,
So I've just bought a new Z1 to replace my Xperia S. I was a bit worried about the screen troubles, but now that I have it in my hand, it actually not that bad at all. Everything is good with the phone, but I was wondering about the serial numbers.
After finding a thread where serial numbers were trying to be linked with poor screens, I saw variations of BH or CB listed as the serial. BH901, CB512, etc.
I went to find mine, and I wasn't able to find anything on the net about it. Seems the serial is BH910. Anyone have any info, or have one the same?
Also, is there anyway I can find the date of manufacture for the phone? I haven't been able to find a country of origin either, even though it's going to be China or Brazil.
Cheers

Maybe your phone comes from an even newer batch of Z1 You might be lucky!
Check if you have the yellow tint or touch screen issues... Maybe Sony solved it in your batch
My serial is CB512, I have the touch screen problem AND the yellow tint... (((

Yeah, I'm kinda thinking the same now, which hopefully means the same all around the world. Like they have finally corrected all the issues, albeit a bit late. Kinda sucks as I now see the confirmation for the Z2...
I've been going through all the touchscreen issue threads, cant repeat any kind of problems at all with it. Just keeps tracking perfectly.
Same with the screen, I can't see any yellow shade. Colours look great, viewing angles do change the colours a tiny bit, but it's better than the Xperia S. Compared it to 2 Xperia S phones, and it looks brighter and also a more "correct" looking white to the rather blueish white of the Xperia S. Gunna go into a shop here and compare to a display Z1 soon.

Where is that confirmation?
My Z1 is from even newer batch, I suppose (if that's what it means), with serial BH912. Screen is great, though for a while after updating to 4.3 it became warmer but then returned back, by itself, to the colder colors.
Though, the update to 4.3 nearly gave me a heart attack then the phone did not start after it. I had to plug it into charger and do the power button + volume up procedure to return it back to life.
Bought it yesterday, and I do not care about upcoming Z2, - you can never stay on top of things with technology nowadays, there is something new and better all the time.
This is an awesome phone and I expect that Sony will provide major OS upgrades for at least a couple of years to come. And I expect that this will mean that there will be RAW photo functionality, which is something that I want the most, as everything else is excellent.
Mine's is BH900, model C6943, no yellow tint, compared to Xperia ZQ (brazilian Xperia ZL) but definitely touch screen issue. To be sure do the touch screen test on the service menu while gripping the metal bezel.

Mine was already running 4.3 when I got it, I didn't have to update it. Maybe the serial numbers don't relate to build date XD
Definatly it is a great phone so far, pretty much just what I was looking for. I was sick of the Xperia S running out of ram and just general laggyness. This is a welcome change, so so smooth at doing anything. I did an Antutu benchmark and got 35139, not that it means much.
And yeah, I don't reckon the "Z2" or whatever it will be called at MWC will be a replacement.

lol its a rumour... don't believe anything you see in the general section... a lot knee jerk reactions here.... if it is official, you will hear it from sony or get some leaked pictures etc... example, the Z1 compact has been leaked since november... we had the actually pictures... back then everyone whats shouting Z2!Z2! turns out its just a Z1 mini lol
few things you need to remember before believing rumours of flagships:
1. real sony flagship has japanese names
2. they release it first in UK and Asia before the US
3. we will have real leaks months before official release (actual picture of the looks, or camera quality etc) not just someone saying it.

in this list there s both new and old serial number that has problem!
u must check it technically;

after all in new update for xperia z1 we will get white-balance app that can end up all these reports!
i had xperia Z and i bought it few days after international release and almost of users talked about bad display! yeah that was not like AMOLED But it was LCD and one of the best LCD i used. then white-balance came and i change it to blue hue to be like amoled;

after that almost of users got that there was kernel problem and not hardware!
in my eyes Z1 screen when u i go to setting is grey and not yellow.
also check this for touch-screen problem.
and look on LG G2 screen that seems yellow !! (it s not yellow exactly it s LCD)

these are just nonsense collection from xperiaguide site.
buy Xperia Z1 and enjoy there s no display issue at all the yellow tint or hue and ... are just because of calibration and not because of bad hardware. the calibration will be nice after next firmware update (that will add white-balance)

Hey guys,
I just received a replacement phone from Bell, so now I happen to have two Galaxy S running in front of me. My old phone, for some random reason doesn't have the same colors as my new one.
The old phone, displays white really nicely, whereas the new one, it's more "beige-ish"... Overall the screen colors of the new phone are "warmer" and the old one has more realistic colors. Darker blacks and whites that are really bright.
I don't get it... Is the new phone defective?! Does it need break-in?
Thanks
Same Problem
Dude I got my old bricked phone replaced around a week ago and this new one's screen, like you said, has beige-ish or yellowish coloring whenever I put the brightness down below 20%. My old one was perfect, it showed the whites perfectly. What are you planning on doing? I think im going to take it in to the store. Did you find out the reason for it or take it in yourself to the store?
You guys should post the manufacture dates for your old and new phones. I got a new 9000M after my internal SD died but I never had both phones at the same time. As far as I can tell my new phone's display is just as good (maybe slightly better) than the old one. They were both 10.08 dates.
From what I have heard, a new AMOLED should be slightly blueish because the blue sub-pixels get weaker before the others.
My old one is 10.08 and the new one is 10.11. Old one's screen was perfect..but i dont know whats wrong with this one..its just yellow when the brightness setting is low..
Same here, bought my mother's captivate(not from replacement) and its screen seemed yellowish and darker than mine. However touch button backlight is much brighter than mine.

Sorry I have to say this, but it is absolutely normal. Had 2 sgs back in june. One ABSOLUTELY white and great screen (but also a dead pixel)and the other more as described here. Also the warm color is best be seen in an angel of normal use. Annoying, but you get used to it.

So Crypta, will this be looked upon as a defect. Could I possibly take it back to Bell store for a replacement. I cannot get used to this..its pretty bad, the yellow coloring i mean.
I think the speedmod kernel has colour adjustments made. Check it out in the Dev forum

Kewjoe, could you plz tell me the step by step process of getting my phone to your phone's level. I mean Darky's rom..speed mod etc. Our phones (bell i9000) are extremely fragile and you know that. I wanted to get darky's on it but i dint want to brick it. Also, if i do mod darky's but somehow or another my phone needs repair and I need to take it back to bell, would I be able to bring my phone back to bone stock (bell jl2) conditon? If yes, how is it done? Thank you
Can't say if it is rated as flaw. Kept mine, as it is only a great difference in comparison. Saw 4 sgs screens - all different from blueish to pretty warm. There seem to be a great variation within production range.
sent from my cobra mk3 by a thargoid pigeon
This is normal in the process of screen, that does not come from the same production line.
Took mine in to bell store couple of days back and they shipped it for repair/replacement. They compared my screen to the phone on display in store and even they said mine was really washed out. I also had a loose battery problem so they mentioned that on the repair sheet as well. Hopefully I get it(or a replacement) back soon. They said 10 days..I'll let you know once I get it back.
is it still SAMOLED, does it still have DEEP Blacks? maybe they changed it to SLCD? i hope not!
Yea its still S-Amoled but it was just yellowy so I had to take it back. I dont think they would change it to slcd..lets see.
Chk this out, I think it could be software problem but I flashed many roms and it hasn't seemed to bring it back to normal so I sent it in.

Have you tried to Galaxy Tuner? It's available in the market, you can change the color settings with it.
I Swyped this on my Galaxy S
Different manufacturing batches ==>Different products. It may happen. But if there is too much difference in colors as you said it is a manufacturing defect.

wow, yeah that's what some of yall was referring to with the yellow issue.
Mine def does not look like that.
C6906 bought directly from Sony Store in Canada.
So this is the famous yellow hue in the Z1. Now I can said I am lucky one for some aspects, not all.
you are all seriously out of proportion, first of all, it's almost impossible to tell whether your screen does or don't look like a screen you see through a photo, perhaps your computer screen is yellow!
second it's much easier when you look at it next to another phone.
third, stop the bs, z1 has much better viewing angles than the xz, take one and compare other than that, it is no amoled, can't do **** about it, but when viewed from usable angle (and i mean an angle where you can use your phone, not one that you can see it) the screen is absolutly stunning.
this comes from someone who compares to other friends phone have a tad more yellow screen, perhaps...

In addition to what you said, the white balance in that OP shot, was so wrong into the warm scale that it is going to make everything look ten times worse than reality, although it does still show that there is in fact a difference, would have been good to know that your brightness on both were the same, because I am sure they were not, all shops I went to had the slider on max and the phone shipped doesn't so you would have to consciously have to make that change. Because I can simulate with one phone, just buy using the brightness slider the same as your opening post
I have a fully professionally calibrated screen and my phones white standard matches my screen almost perfectly, most people from what I can gather prefer a more cold white, if so +8 green and blue makes my Z1 similar to my Z and more close to the HTC One.
Both devices needs calibrating.
Maybe there is a different lightsource hitting on the right, but that one to me seems to have too much red in it.
The white balance app is up for grabs.
Someone who has two z1's in close proximity should try testing and see if they can get them to be equal, and if that fails, I'd be more inclined to believe there are that many "faulty screens"
Hi , my name is Stefan and i am new on the forum ...
Regarding yellow tint display if somebody have an advice ,anything to solve this.
I must confess that although I have changed three screens, I have the same problem ...the display is not trully white .
The comparison is made in the same conditions : both phones are on 5.0.1 Lollipop, brightness is on maximum, adaptive mode display, auto adjust screen tone.
If somebody can tell me what is the problem , please because i don't understand why and how is possible ?
Screens can be recognized by a code, a serial number or manufacturer / supplier or is there something to differentiate between them ? From where to buy or achieve a display that have non tint yellow screen ?
Any advice is welcome because here i think is my last chance to find out what is it about...
Thank you
Have you tried to remove screen protector, just to check that its not that?
Yes , sure that i removed also screen protectoon but is the same yellow tint dispay !
And another important aspect also is , if you look carefully to my pictures beside that my dispalay has yellow tint , the colours are less vivid

You can't make anything to fix it. Mine screen is like yours. Also change my phone 3 times and always the screen is the same.

I never thought at this ...what are you saying is incredible for me , this don't solve the problem but i must confess that i' m really very shocked !!! And yes , indeed you are right ! I took an app, from Play Store called Phone Info *Samsung* and manufacturing date is 2015.02.03 ,made in Vietnam
If you are right is something unbelievable !!!
So for me it's easy to find out if you're right about what you said, because tomorrow I will go and i will check if all phones that have white screens compared with my phone are manufactured in 2014.
And after that, I'll post the results here !

As i promised i'm back with the results after i checked today 4 phones that have white screens from different suppliers and situation is as follows :
1.From 2 different Orange stores i checked 2 phones both on black colour ( they sell only black colour) , first one SM-910F(snapdragon variant) was manufactured on 2014.10.08/made in Vietnam and the second SM-910X(demo unit phone) don' t appear any date of manufacturing just made in Vietnam.
2.From Media Galaxy store i checked 1 phone SM-910C (octacore exynos variant) white colour and this was manufactured on 2015.01.19/ made in Vietnam.
3.From official Samsung store i checked SM-910X (demo unit phone) ,don't appear any date of manufacturing just made in Vietnam.
While I was in the official Samsung store, I met someone, who had bought a Note 4 from same supplier as me and the phone was the same colour white , same model (SM-910F) but this person told me that bought the phone in 2014 and we checked together with the Phon Info app and yes indeed the phone was manufactured in 2014 / made in Vietnam but this phone don't have white screen !!! but the phone screen although it was manufactured in 2014, the screen was more yellow than my phone which is made in 2015 !!!
And another thing would be that my phone which is compared in pictures with the phone screen from Media Galaxy store, but it is also manufactured in 2015 , the same as mine, this phone has a white screen and not a yellow screen like my phone .
So the final conclusion :
is NOT TRUE that all the Samsung Note 4 phones manufactured until year 2015 have white screens and the phones manufactured after year 2014 have a off white/ tint yellow screen !!!
Ok, It was a guess, because in my country almost Note from 2015 have this yellow screen, also new Galaxy S6 have too.
It's true that if you search you can find a good screen but I think 75% of probability is to find bad screen.
Cheers.
I got my note 4 shortly after it was released in Oct 2014. The past month I noticed only the upper half of my screen has a yellow tint to it. I've already tried display settings. Also tried resetting the phone and clearing system cache. It isn't the screen protector. I've investigated many forums and took every advice I can find and still the upper half of my screen has a yellow tint. I see a ton of people have this issue. This phone is supposed to be good for video and video editing along with photography Kind of hard to determine a good picture if half the screen is yellow. I am sure Samsung is aware of this issue but why have they not resolved it? Seems like a recall would have been made on the phones and replacements sent out. Paid over $800 for this phone, I could have kept my old Note 2 and invested in a good camera instead. This really needs to get fixed. If Samsung customer service is going to be this bad I will go with HTC or Iphone.
Try to set it like that!!!

If Samsung customer service is going to be this bad I will go with HTC or Iphone.

Its screen burn. Same has happened on my N910F.
There are some apps that can improve it but i dont think it can be fully fixed.
another way to solve the problem
i have the same problem ... i try to install KCAL app .... but when i open it i got this problem
Hey everybody. My 32GB Prime arrived yesterday and I'm a little underwhelmed by the screen quality. Compared to my little Jiayu G4S the screen doesn't look great, especially white. Thanks to lolo9393 I was able to read through the thread below and on about the second page there is info about how to discover who made your screen. Even though Xiaomi claimed the screen would be made by Sharp, it looks as though this is not the case for some of us. To test which version you have, open the dialer and enter *#*#6484#*#*. This will open a test app. Tap 'software version' then scroll down to where it says 'LCM'. It would appear mine is made by Tianma which explains a lot.
For those of you who haven't bought your phone yet, I would recommend asking your reseller to test your device first and see which LCD had been used. It sounds like AUO make a better looking panel (edit - or not?)
Here's how my Tianma screened Prime looks next to an Oppo Find 7a. Both are set to Max brightness. The Note 2 display is set to 'cool' in settings which is as blue as it gets. Any of the other settings make it look more yellow. The Oppo is on the left. To the naked eye the Oppo doesn't have the pink tint that you see in the photo.
*update* I thought I'd take another photo of my screen after two weeks and three different ROMs. Now I'm using the most recent multi language development ROM from 11th September. Same scenario as before, both screens are set to maz brightness, Opposed find 7a on the left. The XRN2 is set to 'cool' in settings and reading mode is off. Looks a little bit whiter than before to my eyes, but perhaps that's just wishful thinking. Either way my cheapo Jiayu G4S looks better than both. Shame the GPS doesn't work on the Jiayu!

Same here, me and a friend checked it, and both we have the Tianma screen. Both phones are 16GB version.

That's annoying. On the one hand, I guess it's common for manufacturers to use parts from different suppliers, but the phone has to only just been launched and Xiaomi made a point of bragging about using a Sharp screen. I think it's dishonest. I don't think I can return the phone to the reseller because it's not really their fault. My Jiayu G4S was just as cheap and has a much nicer screen.
Uhh. Does it really look that bad? I have ordered a Redmi Note 2. Hope that its screen is manufactured by Sharp.
For what I paid for this device, I think the Tianma screen (yes, I checked) on my device is fine. I think of this as an intermediary device as I dropped my old phone and needed one ASAP and in August this was the best thing on the market, for me it is a great intro to Xiaomi and I will wait to see what the Mi5 reviews are like when it is launched.
Do you have the TDD, FDD or GSM version?
Thank you!
Does anyone found a SHARP one, or they are all Tianma???

Yeah, I'm wondering about the same thing. Which versions have Tianma screen - all 16GB (not Prime) versions, or just the GSM version? Or is it completely random?
In a Russian video review a guy said that he had yellow tint with the GSM version, and that the display is better on LTE version (I don't remember which one was it though).

I have the 32GB Prime LTE version, and it has the Tianma screen. It's not awful, and considering the SoC I guess it's where they've saved money. If I hadn't just owned two Chinese cheap phones with better screens, I wouldn't have been any the wiser.
If I had a way to contact Xiaomi directly I would ask them to replace the phone, purely on principle.
One benefit of this screen is that it is softer on the eyes at night if you're reading in bed.
I might not be able to do it for a day or so, but when I get a chance I will try to take a photo of the difference between devices to show you.
Again, it's not terrible by any means, it just didn't meet my expectations.
Okay, thank you for your reply.
However, in this screenshot it looks like the other way around.

Tianma screen is blueish, but definitely looks better than AUO. Or could it be just about the Color Temperature setting in MIUI?
To my eyes the 'standard' setting looks creamy/yellow and the the 'warm' setting looks very pink/yellow. I set it to 'cool' immediately and it looks kind of OK, but it lacks 'pop'. I you were to put it next to a 2013 Nexus 7 it wouldn't look very good at all. Maybe tomorrow evening I'll try to mirror my screen to the TV and take a photo of the difference.
Viewing angles are good by the way. There is some 'crush' in videos and on the home screen wallpaper for me. I think it really will depend in what you're used to as to whether you like it or not.
This's the "old" news in China's forum, NONE of the screen is provided by SHARP
All the provider are from Tianma(85%)/AUO(15%) the number is the chance you will get.
There's also the rumor in China that Xiaomi never claimed they will use SHARP/AUO in screen, but actually, some of the people found that there's some evidences shows there's a slogan on their official site before selling.
And some of the people said Xiaomi break the rule in China's market with its super low price to force all the mobile manufacturer to lower their price. So some of the manufacturer edit the picture and spread the rumor that Xiaomi cheated consumers.
This is still a mystery because Xiaomi never apologize to this event but make good a loss
to the consumers a 5000 mAh power bank if you buying from their official recognized online shop, Tmall.com and JD.com.
I think Redmi Note 2 is released in the short time that the engineer in Xiaomi did't even tune it completely. The first or second wave who get the phone complaining the tint is too yellow compare to others. But if you are worry about the yellow tint, you can OTA to the latest stable version of MIUI or by FlashTool.
Don't forget MediaTek have the new technology, MiraVision™ which can easily tune the tint of screen color. By the latest stable ROM(6.7.5.0 Stable), Xiaomi also fix the unresponsive touchpannel by upgrading the driver of CTP from T2.0 to T2.3.
In short, you'll never get any screen from Sharp but mostly from Tianma and likely from AUO.
I have both LG G4 and N2 16gb, the Tianma screen isn't all that bad, although I see some slight bleeding that the bottom, but I can live with it, it is my seconardy/gaming phone afterall
I just got the phone. It has Tianma screen, but it looks good.
I'm pleased you like it I guess it just depends what screen each of us is used to. Sadly I've just come from a very 'white' looking screen (not sure if that makes sense).
I also just tweaked things manually using the Miravision app to get it more to my liking.
The screen on my phone looks very good, don't care who is the manufacturer of it, but i just checked and it is Thianma. I even compared it to calibrated with custom kernel Nexus 6, and still looked good.

That's interesting. I wonder if some are better than others. If not I must have really weird eyes, although the difference with the other phones in my household is very pronounced.
I checked and also got a tianma screen. It doesn't look too bad. I compared it to the xperia z2 (which has a pretty average screen though I think) and it wasn't really any worse. Maybe very slightly more faded at max brightness.
I'm more concerned about how much battery this thing uses. I've only had the phone for a few days but it hasn't seemed that great. Although the automatic brightness sometimes feels erratic and made the screen too bright.
Also I think I got some scratch already on mine. It's not visible if I wipe the screen clean so just need to do that and apply the screen protector that came with the phone. But I suppose no gorilla glass here!

Sorry to hear you have a scratch already I better hurry up and buy a screen protector for it. So far I only have a gel case to cover the back.
I'm not getting great battery life either, but I've only had a few battery cycles so far. Perhaps it will improve. My little Jiayu G4S also had a very good battery life which may mean my expectations are set quite high.
I'm not sure, but I think my screen may actually be getting whiter over time. Perhaps I'm just getting used to it!
my screen is scratched on day 2 as well in my pants too. Definitely not Gorilla glass.
Hy to all Nexus 5X Users,
I want to give a little feedback to the N5X. On my first order i get
a H791. I was very dissapointed about the screen quality. A yellowish tint, really
ugly. I read in forums about that an thinked thats nornal.
After 3 days i send it back because i hate this yellow sh...
1 week later i give the N5x a new chance and get a H791F.
Looks complete the same but when turning on, i see a clear screen, sharp
with fine colors, no yellow tint.
So, there are really different screens built in. Some people know it build
differences or calibrate wrong. False, the yellow screen is also awful if
i calibrate it myself.
I will make photos to see the differnce.
how to you check your display serial number ?
I think the difference between H791 and H791F are just of supported bands and markets
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer&id1=9095&id2=9047
It would be intresting though to compare our display serial number to see if the yellowish ones are a specific series or different manufacturer.
Photos
Here are the photos.
Also the vibra motor is on the nexus with the yellow screen
louder. It feels as the whole nexus plastic body vibrate. hard
to explain but like a cheaper chinese phone.
The battery cover also feels not so smooth. My girlfriend does
not know a lot of smartphones but i asked her about the 2 nexus.
She said that the one feels like a chinese copy from the one with the bright lcd.
The yellow screen one has on the sticker outside the box standing 3GB, thats
also strange.
PS. how can i look for the display serial?
Did you buy both phones from Google store?
I also have a 5X with yellow screen - but the thing that annoys me even more is the loud vibration motor.
So is the vibration really a difference between your two phones?
Some screens are yellow but it's not because of the version. Also all the vibration motors sound similar, but once you put a SIM card it can change how it sounds. Something to do with the sim ejection pin that Google acknowledged as normal.

I have the H791 version, yellow screen and on the sticker standing 3 GB. I bought it from Carphone Warehouse (UK). The "3GB" thing is really strange.
But H791F is USA version, H791 is international version for cellular. It's the only difference between 2 of them.
How can I be in the EU - NL then and have a H791F also..? Also ordered in NL..

Maybe it's time to collect serial numbers then?
Nexus 4 Nexus 5 and i dont know about the Nexus 6 but the first 2 had different versions also.
I have a LG Nexus 5X model LG-H791F retailed and ordered in The Netherlands
My s/n is: 510KPZK01653
The PCB is manufactured in Korea. I just will put logic and say South-Korea hehe.
My phone reports as: bullhead LGH790 32GB
I ordered and use mine in the US on Verizon.

I'm not sure if there's an easier way, but I just went to the bootloader and looked. Turn off your phone. Then press and hold Power and Volume Down at the same time. It will start at the bootloader and show you some basic stats. Then just press Power again to continue booting.
The sad thing is that people have been conditioned by all those cold screens, over the years, to perceive them as the norm.
While in fact, most of the time, the yellower screen is the more accurate one.
The problem with nexus 5x is that its screen is inconsistent, not that it's yellow.

At this point your comment is not right.
Here the problem is that there are Nexus5X devices on the market
which have different parts inside. Nobody like the yellow screen, so
why should these people not choose for a device with a cooler LCD.
What we know at this time that the F version has a brighter display
and also a better vibra motor.
Also we do know that phones with 3gb on the sticker are yelowish.
The lte bands are the same like the normal version. Why?

These are what is known as manufacturing tolerances. They can be found with every device made, specifically cheaper ones which don't spend as much money on quality control.
Some are yellow and some are not but it has nothing to do with the regional versions.

Mate. In your entire comment there is only one part that is right: "there are Nexus5X devices on the market

Who said that something is wrong?
We talk only about the differences and how we could identify it.
The customer should have the choice!
Ok, it is something wrong! Here are the words from the androidpit review:
Nexus 5X yellow screen problem
There have been some reports that the Nexus 5X screen has a yellow tint. All phones have some color bias; LCD panels on the likes of the Sony Xperia devices tend to favor cooler blues or purples, while Samsung’s AMOLED screens are typically warmer.
If your Nexus 5X screen has a noticeably yellow hue, however, something is not right. There isn’t anything you can do to correct this yourself, but you may wish to return your Nexus 5X and ask for a new one.
