Black screen, only vibration - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

hi,
I had this phone bought with a black screen problem.
The phone is always black, it has LED activity, when charging, also it vibrates and BACK and MENU lights comes up.
the device boots up because I can hear the music when booting, and also it respond when I touch it, but the sound comes with static and when a SIM card is on, no calls goes by it.
The device was OK but a guy tried to root it with CASUAL root and TWPR recovery and bricked the device.
Any suggestion?
This seems like a software issue to me, because it was made only by flashing some files with odin.

Well is pretty hard to help u if u don't know which firmware it was on before? Here from RockRatt thread when he released modem/baseband base on ATT MODEM THAT WAS RELEASED ......hope this help u figure it out around when this phone bought and release with what kinda firmware it was install before........but u can always ODIN to STOCK from this thread......... MDB/MDL..........MF3 & MK2.........Hope this help u .....goodluck.....PM me if u need more help......:good:
ATT MK2 @ 11-28-2013
ATT MJ9 @ 11-14-2013
.
ATT MJ6 @ 10-24-2013
ATT MF3 @ 7-9-2013
ATT MDL @ MAY? 2013
ATT MDB @ APRIL? 2013 Came with Release of phone

Sounds like a hardware issue...
I broke the LCD on mine, but still had everything working with no visible screen. None of the stuff you described corresponds to a brick and cannot cause this issue.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I think it must by a software issue, I have seen this same behavior on other thread but the person with the solution always sent a PM to anyone in need of help and the solution was never released to the public.
Now the person doesn't appear to be active on the forum, that's why I posted this.
This is the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2324965
Same behavior: Black screen, LED flashing and vibrating and connectivity on the PC ( I can even use KIES and MTP )
If someone has the solution or suggestion please I would really appreciate it, this phone is mint and just bought.

If you can use Kies, try to use the emergency recovery. It may fail. But worth a shot. If that fails, grab the MF3 Odin files and try those, if this fail, go get the MK2 update.zip. That will likely work if the other 2 options fail. But, that has to be flashed in the stock recovery... It would not be hard to do if someone can post the exact button presses needed to flash it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I tried KIES recovery, that was my first option, KIES sees everything OK, it even updated to the last version of AT&T (lol) but still the same symptoms.
Now I'm trying all kind of stuffs with odin, the guy that bricked it told me he ticked "NAND ERASE ALL" in Odin because it was needed to root the device according to him.
I can get to download mode with battery Pulled, VOL DOwn Pressed while inserting battery, 5 sec after first vibration I pres Vol UP and then the PC grabs it and it appears in ODIN.
But when I press Vol Down to go to Recovery to try to get ADB working (because it is not enabled in the developer debugging) , the recovery fails and the device restarts, So I guess the recovery is broken no matter what ROM or recovery I put (tried with Stock and MJ6 recovery, no success so far)

That is a hardware issue then. If nothing is coming up on the screen in recovery or download mode, it is not software related.

Do you see knox warranty counter in download mode? If yes then you are on mf3 or later. If that's the case then follow the thread with mf3-emergency-parts 1 and 2. I'm thinking it's a software issue based on what caused the soft brick. Good luck
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app

Yeah, I tried everything so far and nothing seems to work (I could put it on recovery but no screen whatsoever)
Tomorrow I'm going to take it to repair service, it seems to me something deep is broken, like a driver for the display or something else.
The last step I wanted was to put it in qualcomm usb mode to erase everything in the internal memory and then using the qualcomm recovery for I9505 variants, reinstall the bootloader and at least, have it in download mode; but I can't find any way to put it in this qualcomm usb mode (QHSUSB) if anyone knows how to do this without disassembling the phone that would be great.
Thanks everyone for the help.

I'm telling you... It is not software related... All three things (OS, Download, and recovery) display absolutely nothing it is a hardware failure.
Here is what I want you to do. Turn the device on to any mode. Then shine a flashlight onto the screen. See if you can see any image. If so, the back lights are faulty, if not, you may see hairline cracks in the LCD. If this is the case, you will need to replace the LCD/Digitizer assembly.
Bottom line, it is not a software related issue.

brick boot loader to black screen: no simple solution, simple prevention

Hi
So last night when I flashed my new created ROM with CWM, it seems like I ruined my boot loader, and from that I can't find the way to recover
SYMPTOMS:
- black screen
- power button doesn't do anything
- no button combination boots to download mode
- no charghing indication when connected to charger or USB
- no detection in the computer when connected to the USB
Is this the real black screen of death?
How did I get there?
I flashed a ROM through CWM, when it finished I selected reboot from CWM, and since then, all I see is black screen, no indication whatsoever to powering up.
I didn't try a USB JIG yet, but I will at Thursday (meet with a friend that has one)
as far as I understand the only way to recover from this is using a RIFF Box JTAG which requires, taking apart the phone, and soldering small wires to the board, and then reload the boot loader
Where do we go from here?
If it happened to you Please write down:
how did it happened to you?
what did you do to try to recover?
did you mange to recover?
if you did, how did you?
Why is this post so important to everyone?
Because if it didn't happen to you yet it might happen in your next CWM flashing.
So its very important to find a solution or at least the way to prevent it.
- update 31/12/2010 -
Cause
corrupted boot loader , bad sbl.bin flashing
Prevention:
do not flash roms/addons/fixes with sbl.bin
if you must flash sbl.bin, do it while you are sure that your USB configuration is perfect, and do it as less as possible.
Solution (for those who already bricked to black)
you're not gonna like it
find riffbox jtag....

Happened to me too. I was tinkering with the Armani source to hopefully find something of use for Axura, and I bricked it. Same things happened to me. I called att and got a new one.

Did you try removing battery and putting it back and then opening ODIN, holding the volume up/down and inserting the usb to bring it on the download mode. I guess I might have experience almost similar issue with one of the rom. I almost freaked out. Phone wont show if its charging. It wont mount on the pc. But tried all the possible method available several times including adb shell command. And finally I did hear the magical sound from window when the usb is connected and finally it did work.
Also try the adb method if it doesn't go into download mode using volume button combo.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Happened to me the first time I ran the OTA update from ATT. Paused the update, and when I resumed it - the phone though I finished downloading the JH7 update and tried to apply it.
It failed to apply and when it went to restart, it never powered on. No download mode, recovery, USB power, Odin, nothing. It was completely dead.
I got it replaced at the AT&T store.
If sbl.bin was removed or corrupted you should call the warranty center. Tell them ota update bricked your phone. Lol good luck

I think it is just bad luck. I was once being careless and had the battery fall out of my phone while flashing, it interrupted the flash and I was still able to get in download mode to Odin it. Needless to say, I'll never flash again without the back cover on

Yes i'ts probably a bad sbl.bin, but I didn't remove it I flashed a new one, most of the rom's do the same
yeah sounds like it...sry for your luck.but seems like its toast then. keep us posted
But if you had a batch 1008 captivate and you messed up during and Odin flash to stock then your screwed bcuz Odin one click swaps the sbl.bins to make your button combinations impossible. ADB would work but you obviously can't access that. I too have a 1008 and it sucks, that is why I bought a jig.

There is a a way. Whenever you need to flash to stock you must use following stock. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439
This is same as normal stock posted by DG except that it includes sbl.bin that we (1008) need. I use it everytime and 3 button combos for Download, Recovery work great.

it seems like this is not my case
I'm still looking for other people who had my case, and recovered (even with the JTAG riff box) or at least find someone who know's what we shouldn't do, so we don't break our phones.
so whats batch 1008?
This happened to me last night. I was trying to flash the Darky port via CWM and during the flash it became unresponsive. I had to pull the battery. This caused 2 different things. Sometimes it would be a never ending loop of boot screens and then others it would just go into recovery where it wouldn't let me do anything.
From here luckily I was able to access download mode by using the "adb reboot download" command. So I then got into dl mode and tried to flash stock (not the 3 button fixed one) and it froze on FACTORYFS (or whatever it is). I had no choice but to pull the battery. Now it won't boot at all. So my assumption is it wiped the bootloader. I'm not 100% sure but I feel that the reason it stopped where it did was because I didn't run odin as admin on my Win7 pc. I read in another thread that someone had the same problem when they didn't do that either.
If you are in a pitch black room and you press power you can see your screen illuminate, it's just very dim.
I have batch 1008 if it makes any difference to anyone.
Either way I'm heading to the device support center in a half hour or so to try to get a replacement. I originally was going to make or order a jig but people are saying it only works if the bootloader is intact. I originally had hopes because one person claimed that they recovered a completely dead phone with it, but upon further reading all others could not. It seems like his phone may not have been completely bricked.
Update:
Just got back from the at&t device support center. They gave me a new phone without any hassle. They asked what was wrong with my phone and I told them that I was trying to update it and now it won't turn on. The guy tried a few combinations of button presses and tried hooking it up to a jig-like device. Nothing worked so he just gave me a refurbished phones. No questions asked. As I was walking out he said a few people have had the same issue so it's not a big deal.
Either way I thought this would help to realize that there is likely no way to get the phone to boot unless you have a jtag handy.
I don't feel safe to flash rom via CWM.
If you really want to do that, delete the bootloader inside the .zip
So i think i killed mine too
so i get black screen, two button combo gives me SEC S5PC110 Test B/d
I opened odin but nothing Is this toast?
I had this exact problem over thanksgiving weekend. My phone was was was hard bricked I was getting the "phone + computer" it took some effort to get it into download but I got it there and when I was recovering with odin the connection got lost the screen went blue and then nothing. It was dead totally unresponsive no charging or boot screen nothing but once I got a black screen with redlines. After a lot of attempts to revive it I gave up called ATT warranty for a replacement. Luckily I opted for the slow mail service and kept reading. Yesterday I saw the above post and now I can say "yes even now your phone is not bricked even though it does NOTHING"
step 1) first thing I did was charge the battery with my replacement phone as the bricked phone was no longer able to charge the battery
step 2) open odin1 click and hooked up the usb to the phone and computer no battery
step 3) inserted the battery holding only volume up+down
step 4) "BOOM" download mode and a happy dance
I posted this in the"read before flashing" thread there are other people who have recovered from this and now I think that the extra trick to this is getting a 100% battery you need this to flash, and state the phone is in now wont charge a battery.
hope this sound encouraging

Yeah it's either that or just a misconception spread by the community. Both my old captivate and replacement were 1008. I have been able to get into recovery via the power+volume combination. I was also able to get into dl mode using the vol+insert usb combination.
It's possible I just got lucky on both but who knows.
I, and many others have a 1008 that don't go into download or recovery via the button combos without fixing sbl.bin.

[Q] GT-i9505 works but screen is black, no splash

Hi people. I have been running a rooted phone for a while and decided to go back to unrooted recently. I decided I would like to use the barclays app and apply the new updates that samsung rolled out recently. However when I flashed the stock firmware I found that the screen no longer worked. The phone seemed to boot up and play the samsung startup jingle but no splash logo. just a black screen. To test I decided to call it and the call came through ok and answered with the home button, speech all functional???!! Just no screen ... completely black??? Would this likely be a fault with the firmware or is it just uncanny timing with a faulty screen??? confused and wondered if anyone else has come across this before I go but a new screen. I downloaded the firmware from hotfile "I9505XXUDMH8_I9505OXXDMHA_I9505XXUDMH8_HOME"
thanks in advance

i would say to stay away from new firmwares at this time....you are stuck in the locked bootloader.
can you boot in recovery or odin modes and see the screen?
wipe data and cache and reflash the MH8 then do the wipe. see if that works
can not determine if it is a HW or SW issue.
if you want to use app that doesnt require root like Barcley and you are rooted, you can hide the root with some available app.
It seems I am able to get the device into download mode, although nothing comes on the screen. I just have to do the procedure blind. No matter what I do nothing comes up. It also seems I can only get the phone to read the internal memory through USB once a flash procedure has completed. It seems to force a boot up but when I try to restart manually it does nothing but vibrate and only seems to be able to put into download mode while blind. I find it very unusual that the screen should suddenly stop working the moment I try and flash the standard firmware. Getting worried now. nothing seems to work
Can anyone help here??? I have tried flashing several times. Just vibrates and does nothing. I can get it into download mode but I don't get any warning screen up. I just go through the button combo's blind and it manages to get into communication with a odin com port. I have tried doing a PIT download. What I was then finding is that the phone can bring up a recovery screen with option to reset, I reset but the phone will just be a black screen and play the samsung start jingle without the splash screen. It then seems to boot and receive notifications with a totally black screen. completely unresponsive.
If you can't see a splash screen or even recovery and download mode screens, then I'd say its a hw issue and no ROM is going to fix it, because those mentioned things are not even tied to the ROM.
Your screen has broken some how, it could be as simple as a flexi connector falling out or as bad as your screen being totally gone.

[Q] Galaxy S4 i9500 stuck on home screen for no reason

Hi guys,
I did a research regarding my problem, found a couple of threads but none of them helped and I noticed my situation is a bit different from most users having this problem.
I live in Brazil, went on a trip to USA for 15 days, kept my SIM card and SD into the phone, just used it to access WiFi, watch videos, make a couple of Viber calls, send messages via WhatsApp, etc. Everything was fine, no problem at all.
Today, when I landed in Brazil, I turned on the phone, entered my pattern and since then my phone just displays that initial screen "Samsung Galaxy S4" and keeps rebooting like crazy. In these last 15 days, I didn't make a single change on the phone. Absolutely nothing. It just decided not to work anymore
My phone is not rooted, runs the latest updates.
I tried initializing in safe mode (power+home+volume up), it shows the android green robot at a glance and then reboots again. I can't even read what is written on the screen, so fast the reboot takes place. I also tried pressing the menu button repeatedly, but no luck as well. Tried removing the battery, turning on without SIM & SD, nothing. When I connect it to a power source, the red led doesn't even light. My computer doesn't recognize it either.
Any suggestions on what to do? Returning it to the shop is not an option as well, cause I bought it out of Brazil...
Thanks a lot, colleagues!

You could try this take the battery out for at least 12 hours , I read somewhere that can work for your kind of problem
I had this with Note 2.
No other option but to factory reset and flash official samsung firmware from sammobile.com
After that we were back to normal. Try that.
sounds not that bad..
try booting on download mode then flash some official firmware from sammobile.com
NOTE: don't flash XXUMH8 or any MH firmware for it contains new bootloaders with the samsung KNOX crap.
I really wish I could solve that without having to install everything again... but anyway
I'm sorry for this newbie question, but how can I flash a new firmware if my computer doesn't recognize my phone?
And what software do I need in order to do that?
Thanks a lot!
Just one more question...
if I really have to install a firmware, isn't it better to flash one from another country?
It seems like Brazil is always one of the latest to get the updates
Which country would you recommend?
Thanks a lot again, colleagues.

I mean, I can go to download mode.

But when I click volume up in order to continue to download mode, the phone reboots.
It can't stay stable for more than 3 seconds, let's say.

When I press power+home+volume down, it works.
But when I click volume up in order to continue to download mode, the phone reboots.
It can't stay stable for more than 3 seconds, let's say.

Ok, but in order to perform a hard reset, I need to press power+home+volume up at the same time, right?
That doesn't work either.
When the small green android robot is shown, the phone immediately reboots. I can't even read if there's something written, so fast it reboots.
Are there any options left or just sending to Samsung?

Ok! Thanks a lot for your help
Try removing your sd card before going to download mode, maybe it's trying to finish a failed update. Try using someone else's empty sd card

Rebooting issues are battery related sometimes. Try another S4 battery and see if it helps

Thanks MaryAnna and Obagleyfreer. I've already tried what you just suggested.
No luck
I tried to give it to Samsung, and look what I've got:
They told me to look for support in the country I bought the phone.
This is ridiculous. It's a shame.
That's when I regret changing my iPhone for a Galaxy.

[Q] Galaxy S4 Hard Bricked (I think)

Hi
I have a bit of an issue with my phone and hoping someone can help me out.
History
My phone screen has cracked and a repair centre showed me it is most likely due to my battery blowing out, so as my phone is still under warranty I have arranged for it to be returned to O2 to be repaired. However as I had it rooted and have had multiple ROMs installed, my counter is at 7, so needed to reset this and get the O2 stock ROM back on.
What I've done
I used Triangle Away to reset the counter, but this didn't seem to work, I chose the option to reset the counter, phone would reboot but not into Download mode, just straight back up to OS.
Used latest version of ODIN to flash the O2 stock firmware, this failed and phone switched off. Would not power back on.
Spent 4 hours with phone not able to power on in any way.
Eventually found the sofware referenced on Samersh(apologies) post re: recovery of phone, this allowed the phone to flash via USB and get me back to Download mode. I can then use ODIN to flash sotck firmware with a PIT file, this shows as succesfull, but on completion phone switches off and wont power back on.
I can repeat these steps over and over again, but each time ODIN flashes succesfully, but at the end phone powers off and wont power back on.
Can anybody shed any light on what I need to do to get my phone recovered, or have I lost it forever?
I appreciate any and all help you guys can give me as I am at a complete loss as to what to do.
Regards
grabrail
Buy a new battery. If your battery indeed blew out, then it's damaged. That's why you can't boot anymore.

The battery still works as I can boot after flashing with Legijas software, but only to download mode. After flashing with ROM it then reverts to a "Dead" status until flashing with Legijas software again.
Ok, then it's not your battery.
Flashing roms with a damaged battery is still not very smart.

Tried a new battery last night from a brand new i9505, no joy.
I have found a shop that may be able to J-TAG it for me so fingers crossed it will be ok.

Bricked - Cant Access Recovery (Software or Power Button Issue?)

So to make a long story short this is the events that lead up to my current issue on my i9500;
1. Flashed CF Auto Root
2. Flashed philz_touch_6.48.4-i9500 recovery (worked)
3. Installed pac_i9500-nightly-20140823 via recovery
The issue I had was that my phone would randomly restart and boot loop till I pull the battery. This happened about twice in the week after loading the new rom (I was running stock 4.4.2 prior). two days ago the phone refused to boot even with pulling the battery. I eventually got into download mode by pulling the battery at the yellow triangle otherwise it just reboots. I could also not access recovery mode at all.
I have tried flashing the stock firmware (XFA - South Africa) also trying different recoveries. But the problem remains. I also cannot use ADB as it does not pick up the device.
I am wondering if this issue may be the power button that broke or if my rom/recovery could be at fault? Also what else could I try in your opinion? I feel sending it off to a Samsung repair center may be my last hope :crying:
Thanks in advance!
Could be the power button.
Doed it reboot in the download mode too?
I couldnt get that part..
Generally the random reboots are linked to the bad power button only..but there can be a lot many reasons to it.
Kernels. No proper OP prescribed method of installing roms. Or a rom issue in itself.
Depends.

Thanks for the response.
Let me try clarify some points to assist. Once I am in download mode with the battery inserted it also reboots, I have to take the battery out as I see the yellow triangle as the volume up also does not seem to function till the battery is removed.
As for the how I went about installation of the first rom, this was done via recovery. The recovery was installed via Odin. Everything worked for a few days before the boot loop issue started.

It is a power button issue.
Tap it in various directions or on any flat surface to release it
Or open up your phone and softly try releasing it..
For you have installed a knox free rom, thus knox cannot be the culprit.

It seems that I could not get the power button working again, I even tried hitting it flush o a flat surface as I have read on some sites. Guess I will send it off to Samsung on Monday for a repair.
Thanks for the assistance.

I wanted to update this thread now that my phone is back in a working condition.
The issue was the power button. I got a local cellphone technician to replace the power button and there after flash stock firmware with a TJAG. I did contact Samsung and they said should I not have rooted my phone this would have been covered by my warranty! :crying:

Ehh what? :/ covered under warranty?
Those dumb ssc guys told one of my friend in india that it is a damage done by him so they wont change or make it okay for free. :/
Because it is a physical damage..so he gave INR1000 ($20 appx. After a heavy argument and bargaining) To get it okayed.
