Who's happy with the new update -I am - Xperia Z General

Hi
Got my update today on generic UK and I am really impressed
Have seen a lot of people moaning that the update didn't come out quick enough
Loving the new improvements, wow camera start up time is amazing now
Loving the new themes
Walkman app sounds better without clear audio enabled now using external amp
New email client is nice and loving the new keyboard
Overall I am very impressed

Yeah I think. 4.3 is great on the z.feels like an upgrade should
Sony Ericsson w800,LG viewty,Nokia 5800,HTC wildfire,HTC desire s,Motorola xoom,nexus 7,nexus 4,Xperia z,nexus 7 2

It's awesome although the ram is less free now but still
I liked the new camera app plus the add-on and the new task for the volume keys and I hated how we can't view and delete the photo within the camera app without going to albums
I liked the new awesome keyboard but also I hate that we can't unchecke the Chinese language
The new phone app is cool
The brightness quick setting is something needed for long time hopefully they will do the same with sounds
that's about it for now

not all that happy would have benn if they had the feature to move apps to sd like in other 4.3 updates like s4,s3 etc

The only, though a major dissapointment that I found was the deterioration of the camera quality. Initially, XZ was hated for it's low light photos but after the last 4.2.2 update, the camera worked like a charm and had me on my toes for very good noise reduction even in superior auto mode.
And I am very dissapointed that again in 4.3 there is a lot of noise in relatively low light photos. I don't like the automatic ISO it sets for the photographs (in Superior Auto mode). Apart from that, clicking a photo via volume keys is simply wonderful and enables us to finally take waters underwater.

I like it.

Anyone else's run a lot cooler? Mine gets no where near as hot.
Menus run smoother, not a fan of the new keyboard so switched out to the regular Google one. Love the white. Battery seems similar to previously. Love the brightness and throw quick settings. Camera app is better although I'm disappointed at no Time shift burst.

50% happy. Of 50% unhappy.

Not really happy with it, no improvement much that i can tell. I don't like the bright white settings menu, it seems like more boring plain themes, the camera no long has any quality options , same with video , i have less choice now.
So far disappointed

the new keyboard is godly, does anyone know if it is possible to extract it and make an apk out of it? or does anyone have any tips on how to start?

Mixed feelings for me, having the Suspend_backoff Wakelock (Android OS battery drain) but overall smoothness and performance has improved, We have almost the same features as the Z1 now and for that I don't really envy the Z1 anymore. Camera is better in someways (like the volume button can be used as shutter) but I do agree somehow quality isn't like how it used to be.

no quality options? I am sure you haven't check out the manual mode yet.

Overall liking it so far
Except for the known WiFi issue for people using SW2
Which renders the watch useless, So much for Smart Watches lol

Best update so far.
Been using Sony / Sony Ericsson phones since the Xperia Arc S and the 4.3 update is ,IMO the best update from Sony so far.
The smoothest UI experience I have ever had with a Sony phone.
Having said that, I agree with gerickjohn regarding the wakelock issue. Used Grenify to hibernate lots of apps (including system apps) as well as system tuner and xposed boot manager to prevent apps on boot and unused processes. Still uses about 1% per hour on standby which is quite a bit more than on 4.2.2 (1% per 3-4 hours). Not a huge drain, but I prefer to reserve the battery for when I'm actually using the phone.
Camera has never been the best on the XZ so wasn't expecting much anyway.
P.S Does anyone know if Grenifying the wrong system apps can actually cause more battery drain? i.e apps that keep trying to start everytime they are hibernated?
Edit: I think I may have fixed the Android OS wakelock by disabling auto backup/restore and deleting the "gmail extension" in dashclock.

One thing that made me wanna buy this Xperia Z is the ability to capture good pictures in low-light condition. But after this update, the quality is very poor. Even Oppo Find 5 (chinese branded phone) can takes better pictures than my Xperia Z in low light condition. It's a shame...

I am about to update my phone soon (UK unbranded), but at the same time I am a bit sceptical about the change of the keyboard? I don't really understand what people mean by the new layout & I have searched around but not enough information on it.
Can anyone let me know if the T9 (predictive text) is still there with the old style keypad? I don't like using the qwerty board - I make too many mistakes despite having small fingers! A screenshot would be most helpful! Thanks

So it's just visually a little different, just more rounded edges?
I thought it was all squashed up to one side from what I heard.
Will update now then!

Struggling to root my phone with 4.3? Anyone have any advice or is there a new guide?

Xperia X10... How BAD can it be?!

In my urge to find something "different" I'm considering purchasing an X10, but all the reviews say it's just terrible...
Honestly, how bad can it be? Is this just tainted blood from when it was first released on 1.6? Am I wrong in thinking that it's a very usable device, either with the latest updates, or on a rom from the dev section?
I'd say wait another month when it gets Gingerbread and look for reviews then.
Right now, I wouldn't recommend buying it, no matter what custom rom you put on it. There are better phones you can get with the same price.
Ofcourse, I love the design, camera, UI, etc but the screen is so unbelievably bad right now, it goes over anything else
What do you mean the screen is bad? Response or the image on the screen?

I totally agree.
Most of the people that reviewed the x10 used it with Android 1.6.
IMHO, it's as bad as you think it is. But as Mr Patchy said what's the most important thing or feature do you want on a phone?
In my case, I just want a stylish, camera phone that has ANY Android OS in it be 1.6, 2.1 or 2.3, so with or without the GB update, I am quite satisfied.
Of course, any new features are welcome.

Well yes....but not 1.6. If you can remember 1.6 the screen was terrible!!! But since 2.1 SE adjusted colors and made it a very nice display imho. But, yes I to find it important to have a quality camera on my phone....big big reason why I ditched my nexus one for my very first X10. Then everything else just fell in place. I loved the phone the day i got it and never looked back....and that was when it was on 1.6 lol.

I need a quality cam, reliable signal, decent battery life, and a usable messaging system, with an accurate keyboard.
That's about it.
Camera, signal, and battery life are just fine. It's not the fastest phone. It's still pretty laggy even when optimized. Things should really improve with the 2.3 upgrade but even with that, there are faster, more powerful, and featured phones out there.
For the average smartphone user, the major downside to this phone is the low in call volume. I've had to purchase a bluetooth speakerphone for the car (which is great actually). Taking a call in a loud environment is awful.

Id say go for it. You dont sound to demanding, and you dont sound like you need the best of the best. The X10 is pretty pleasing in my experience.

I've had my x10 since march. Ive had other droids before and an iphone as well but what i really needed was the great camera that the x10 does have. I've always read people having problems with low in call volume but I can say that i've never had that problem myself. I never used the phone with 1.6, when i got it the 2.1 update was already released, so i never experienced the dreadfulness (some say) that was the 1.6 rom.
The x10 is a very beautiful and stylish phone (specially the white one) with an outstanding camera, HD video and android. I can agree, that the rom (The SE one anyway) is not the fastest or more responsive thing on earth, but I don't find it too horrible either. now that it has the dual touch, the large display is a lot better to handle, even if not perfect.
I say go for it. try to find the one dubbed x10 HD (one that comes with 2.1 out of the box), because it is my understanding that it has a better display module that looks even better than the first x10s did.

If you want to make calls with your phone DON'T buy a X10! The in-call volume still is the worst I ever experienced in my life. All those updates, hacks or custom kernels didn't change anything. When you aren't in a church or library understanding someone is a challenge.

One thing to consider is how long you plan to use this phone. The X10 Is about to receive android 2.3. This however will be the last official android upgrade that it will receive. I'm close to the end of a 2 year contract so this is not such an issue for me. Granted if you are planning to use a custom roms it won't be a big issue for you either.
Edit;

It's stability ranges from no issue's at all to overheating, "usb & chipset" death.
Support from SE is very much lacking.
The x10 does not do well in low signal area's and will overheat and chew thru the battery on 3G.
The camera is nice but unfortunately lacks a flash.
The screen is great even with only 16Bit color.
It's upto you but i would suggest another handset.

Did you use the X10 on 1.6? There is a very big noticeable difference between 1.6 and 2.1. While they didnt give us 16m colors they did adjust the colors. Some of the same wallpapers and widgets i used then and now proove a massive difference. Not exactly sure how or what they did...but something was adjusted lol.

Feedback on new AT&T ROM

So I installed it yesterday (and thanks to all those who helped).
I think the new ROM is FANTASTIC. Everything works for me, its faster than before and I have no lags. Im using Launcher Pro because the new Blur doesn't support scrolling widgets.
Battery is definitely better (turned on at 6am and had 15% at 6pn which us amazing for me).
Camera has been improved. Pictures look sharper and the colors no longer look weird. I owned an sgs2 and to me the pictures are just as good (and definitely better than the Sensation I owned for a bit). Its also much faster (put it in sport mode and virtually immediate).
Fingerprint reader works. Properly. Period.
Sound on speaker is excellent. Its still the best device on the market.
Sound on earpiece might be a little quieter. I am not certain on this but its something I noticed on my first call.
Gps lock is very quick. It was before too.
Software. Wow what a MASSIVE improvement. Email software is finally useable readable and possibly as good as Sense. Widgets are also better, like weather. Photo software and gallery better. MUSIC is a different application totally. I think I preferred the old one or just need to get used to it. Dialer is improved. Video playback is still great and again an area where this device excels over others I have owned. Animations also very cool. Top bar and notifications simply better than before. Entire color scheme is improved.
Stock keyboard is better but I still make a lot of mistakes when typing. HTC still make the best Android keyboard IMHO and I wish I could port the Sensation keyboard.
Overall its just more elegant and mire pleasurable ti use. For the first time I feel like its a device to show off. I really believe its the best device out there. Had Moto started out with this ROM it would have been considered a device as good as the HD2 in its day.

After one day on gingerbread, I'd have to say the keyboard's the biggest improvement for me. An @ key without having to press alt first? Yes! Long press keys for numbers? Yes!
I agree. It's a fantastic upgrade and the new skin is slick....my only complaint is that homescreen scrolling isn't as fast as I expected. The forest LWP is a little slow, and pinch to zoom on stock camera gallery isn't as good as my previous phone or 3rd party market apps
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
its is an amazing difference
before making the plunge I wud like to know from u guys about the screen gradient issues
is it solved??
like skin tones appeared really odd and washed out
I thot it was a software issue as the screen grabs also showed them on my PC
that was a big gripe for me but for the otherwise near perfect phone
and ya camera quality was also really poor
Are you talking about kenns?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
dunno whom u are asking but am still on froyo
wud love to hear that screen issues are solved
leaving aside the pentile issue as SGS also has pentile but looked better
Battery life is the biggest improvement forvmr

I freakin love the new ROM. Thanks KP!
They have made a smart move by selecting a color scheme that greatly reduces the effect of the inherent technical limitations of a Pentile LCD! Its better than Froyo but I guess only because of the color scheme they have decided to go with!

Loving the new rom so far. I do think the cardock app got worse (looks better, but fewer custom buttons). I love how you can uninstall apps using a long press from the app drawer.
I'm also looking forward to trying the ignore call, respond with text option.
Last thing, wish the default music app worked with Google Music Beta... installed the Google one instead.

Overall, this seems to be working pretty fantastically for me except for a few things.
- Contact List can get REALLY slow sometimes. (15 seconds to load up a contact's information!)
- Unlocking (the screen, not the phone) can get slow, as well as Facebook and a few other apps. Haven't fully tested yet.
Is this happening to anyone else?
So far, i'm loving the new blur, everything is working fine for me.but i hope this is not the final blur version, because i was watching a demo of blur for droid3 on youtube it looks a little bit better then this. The swipe between screens was different and the quick contact widget was different and more useful.

You only hard brick if you try to do the OTA. If you use kennethpenn's method using CWM with an unlocked bootloader you'll have no problem.

[Q] Is this the best phone for 400€?

As the topic title says, i'm looking for a new phone to replace my boring xperia s (bootloader loocked...) and the maximum i wanna spend is 400€. So,for this money the oppo find 5 is the best option? The feature that i most apreciate is taking photos, and my xperia s do it very well...

The camera is OK but nothing amazing in my experience which is fine for me and Faux kernel has done wonders my battery life (+30-40%). Not sure the camera can compare to the Xperia.
Despite those niggles, I'd recommend the F5 above others to friends if asked but it depends on your needs. I certainly prefer it over the Note 2 and Nexus 4. For me is the sweet spot between size, screen, performance and design.
What else is on your short list?
-- From my Find 5
Exactly the switch I made XS->Find5. I thought about getting the HTC One or the S4, but since I planned on running a custom ROM, I didn't want to pay for features I wouldn't use anyway.
Regrets? No. The Find5 has a Sony Sensor as camera, AFAIK the same as in the XZ. On stock ROM, the cam is pretty good, not so much on custom ROMs, though, usual closed source binary blob problems.

Hi!
If you are looking a brand new one, maybe this is the one with best camera for this price (I dont know anything about Nokia and WP) you can buy for that amount.
If you dont mind, maybe you can take a Xperia Z (same sensor, but better app) in the second market.
P.S: Yes, this is my first post in about 3 years LOL! (I prefer reading)

at the beggining i was thinking about xperia z (i'm a huge fan of the xperia line) or htc one (i don't like the samsung plastic), but i reconsidered that ... 550€ or more for a phone? i think it´s to much, so i stablished the 400€ limit, and for that money, and new phones (not used) i'm in between nexus 4 or the oppo find 5 ( i believe they are the only with superb specs and not so expensive phones ). But the nexus 4 is 4.7 inch screen, and an 8mp camera ( but i guess the 8mp i just a number).
3 things that i consider in a phone : camera; battery; development.
So, what you guys say?
If camera is a priority then you may be better looking elsewhere.
The Find 5 camera is OK in good light but struggles otherwise. My wife has a Nexus 4 and I don't rate that camera either.

Well you can forget the Stock firmware even with fauxes Kernel it will suck you dry. The best experience as far as battery life i had so far was with Cyanogenmod. Even so it is not running an optimized Kernel it seems to handle power mangement way better!
5-6 hours screen on is way over what you will be able to achieve with normal day 2 day use. For sure you will max out at the moment at 4 hours screen on time.
If you are looking for a new phone with lot's of battery life i would hold of another 1-2 month and see what others have to offer because Oppo didn't even release 4.2 yet but they are planning on in early August. Until then don't bother!
so, in conclusion, despite the problems with the camera ( which i think it's a software problem, not hardware ) for 400€, and with a custom rom, the oppo it's the best phone on the market?

Sorry just saw this... I've tried most of the stock/beta ROMs and as a light to moderate user, it lasts me about 24-36 hours. Without faux kernel I would get around 3 to 3.5 hours screen on (email, twitter, browser, Tapatalk, watching a TV show, taking pics/video and a few calls).
With faux setup for battery life, I can get 4.5 to 5 hours doing the same stuff and there isn't really a performance hit as I'm not doing much needing the phone to run at full speed for long.
It was really the idle drain that was killing it at around ~1.5%-2% per hour rather than ~0.8% with faux. Usually, I'm on wifi and have GPS on and leave them on when sleeping so it was overnight that saw a big improvement.

stock camera and stock rom only thing i've done is root and kill the stock launcher, thats it no editing on those either straight out of the phone in full res.

Yeah I used Stock to for a while and when you do close ups the camera makes some pretty nice pictures. But as soon as contrasts aren't really there anymore it gets potentially noisy.
I mean how much can you really expect from a smartphone camera sensor without any optics to adjust depth.
Your pictures are nice. I made some nice ones myself but they don't measure up to HTC One's Ultrapixel contrast and light condition abilities.
Funny part about all of this is probably that drivers neither on Stock or Custom are really optimized.
I do though still think the state the phone is in right now it is not worth it. Neither Stock Software nor Custom give you a really great experience with the device right now.

After trying numerous stock and custom ROM/kernel combinations, I have to disagree. Last week's Chinese Firefly is, IMO, very usable in terms of performance, battery life, and reliability.
I posted some findings here:

N4 - 4.2.2 versus 4.3

What I'd like to see is for you to post your reviews/comments comparing 4.2.2 vs 4.3. Tell us what the differences you've seen, the good the bad and so on. If there's a specific app that works awesome now because of the new graphic update, what apps are having issues, etc.. Have you noticed a difference in the pictures taken with the camera. I'd like to see this in here so those that are updating will be able to see what others in the forum are experiencing since their upgrade.
I find that my phone boot faster compared to before, which is always nice. I've taken a few pictures and I see a modest increase in quality and the new menu is easy to use and make sense, style-wise. I've heard some complains about the Netflix app, going black and such, but I've had no issue with this myself. I did have to do a cold boot this morning for some reason but not sure if this can be attributed to the update or not.

I find my phone alot more snappier while opening apps and doing stuff, as if 4.2.2 wasnt snappier enough
The new camera is really good in terms of usage and pictures too i must say...thr use of flash has improved from before
T9 dialer functionality is pretty awesome...and completes the phone app...dont need 3rd party dialer now
All in all, it may not be a big update...but all the things are cool except that mx player pro isnt working, also crashed my apex launcher, rest seems to be working fine
I really wanted the wallpaper displayed on nexus 7 2013...but no luck there..

5.1.1 Existence has been leaked, what do we want?

So 5.1.1 was leaked on a Google Dev page today (Source)
What would we want to see in this Lollipop update for the N6 seeming we know nothing about whats coming?
Me personally? A bit better battery life (I think the second .1 indicates new kernel?) and to clean up some of the bugs.

probably nothing beneficial for the N6... looks like it's only going to be for the N7 and N9... much like the 5.0.2 release was never "official" for the N6.
If its truly LMY47S, then it is not really 5.1.1.
That has the same build date code as 5.1.
I want faster responding sensors. Auto dimming, proximity sensor for phone calls sped up. Damn thing takes forever! As does auto rotate.
Want a rocketship for blasting off to Mars! Seems my Nexus6 has about everything else!
I'd like my battery to last over 9000 minutes of screen on time.
Three wishes, and none of them for an iPhone, M9, or S6.
Better battery optimization, improved camera and radio, and ability to switch to a dark Material theme.
Performance improvement for Camera, Dialer and occasional dropped frames in animations.
I would like google to unlock the notification led xD
Faster booting up and more options when shutting down.
Screen resolution options.
That's it for now, only had it for 2 days. Still learning about lollipop, I came from an galaxy s3.
Sexy wallpaper
- Notification lights back by default (non-rooted)
- (Better) hardware encryption for faster boot-up
Fix the carkit a2dp crashing when connected to a Bluetooth low energy device. I should not have to put my moto 360 in airplane mode every time I drive my car...

To you and others in this thread - You're on XDA and many of the feature requests are available in most custom ROMs. "I don't run rooted ROMs" or "I'd like those features to be in stock ROM" will probably be your reply, to which I will say, why are you commenting on a developer / Android customization forum?

Why would Google implement something that is unnecessary and could cause problems? There hasn't been any need to close apps for quite a few iterations of android (actually an understatement)
With all these 'new' versions I find it interesting that N7 seems to be the problem child they can't get right.
I just want WiFi calling

Well it's using a tegra chip. All other nexus are using Qualcomm chips. Minus the 9 which is also late to the party.
The N6 is already a great device. What would make it stand above the rest is for it to be natively as smooth and lag free as the N5 is and to add some minor battery life improvements.
