[Q] Is this a fake Galaxy S4? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I bought a phone from a China website, etotalk which said it is a dual sim Galaxy S4, model i9502 (Samsung Galaxy S4 duos). But I have been having problem with it like, poor GPS reception, and poor battery life. So, I used the CPU identifier app, and it showed me as per attached files. Can you check whether its a fake S4? It says CPU type: Mediatek MT6589x4, but it also says under it Samsung Exynos 5 5410 OCTA x4 +4.1 1.2Ghz 1.2Ghz, then for Smartphone type: Alps/HDC i9502 (Galaxy S4 layout). Under more info, it says, delcared cpu speed: 1600Mhz (not applicable on this device) (Samsung fingerprint for faked market access). I think I bought a fake s4 What should I do?

Check weight of the phone on the internet and then find some pawnshop or jewelery and ask if they could mesure the weight of your phone. But i think there should be no mediatek crap.

Looks like its fake as it has a Mediatek (used in pretty much all the chinese knock-offs) quad-core processor rather than the Exynos Octacore. Anything for sale on the chinese websites are pretty much all fakes/clones. Can you not return for a refund?

Well you werent really to know as the website is very misleading as their phones are sold as legit devices. Usually on other chinese sites its quite clear that they're fakes as they use the chinese brand names and clearly state the processor make. Hopefully you get sorted and get your refund.

Thanks jaswinky. I have tested the IR led and it works fine with my Samsung UA40D6600WR TV. It also works with our Astro (cable TV).
I have used download mode when I upgraded my phone to 4.3 by following the three steps in this website specifically for i9502 dual sim s4, http://marrkdaviid.com/2013/08/fix-...gle-play-on-the-galaxy-s4-i9502/#.UsH4jPQW0ud. The print screen for the download mode is attached (taken from the website, but similar to what I saw when I installed it). The steps are: 1) Install stock ROM ZNUEMK3 usin ODIN, 2) Install twrp recovery, 3) install the custom ROM (a purchased ROM) using this method. I upgraded successfully as per attached print screen, 'about device'
I'm confused.

So, congratulations, you can be sure you have an original Samsung i9502, otherwise you couldn't have entered in download mode or use led ir (clons have a empty hole instead a led).
Also, Chinese clons have a screen resolution rather lower than standard s4 1080x1920 px. If you want you can download antutu benchmark app from Google play and check it easily in device info section.

Yes, it seems as you say... Also, see you have 2GB RAM, clons usually have 1GB. You have a genuine Samsung s4 duos.

Thanks jaswinky. I checked antutu benchmark and it confirmed that mine is s4 i9502 as per attached print screens. The benchmark was good too at 24,213. So relieved. :good:

Jaswinky, if you can help me further, please My issue with this phone is its GPS which was the reason I wanted to determine whether it’s fake or not. My experience with it is bad compared to my previous phone, iPhone 4. I use Waze extensively, & with S4, I always get disconnected every minute or so, with error, ‘no GPS, using approximate locations’, and it takes a while to get reconnected. It then reroutes with my latest location. In a city, losing a few seconds of GPS connections means you’ll miss the next turns etc. This happens even after I have restarted the phone (ie with no other app running). I have tried all sorts of things & done all kinds of troubleshooting since I purchased this phone on 19/12/2013 (11 days now), but I still can’t resolve it. My troubleshooting includes:
1) I read through Waze forum, and most people said Waze issue is caused by Yahoo Weather, but I don't have it installed.
2) Others say, if I go to the setting and switch the GPS signal off and back on while within the app, it will correct itself, but this doesn't work for me
3) When I restarted phone, I found a few built-in Samsung apps immediately running. Since they can’t be uninstalled, so, I disabled them. These are: S Health, Story album, and accuweather
4) I used Location services. I used both GPS satellites and wireless networks. I also tried disabling wireless networks. Both produced the same error
5) I used app, ‘Faster Fix’, and set the location to Malaysia (my country)
6) I uninstalled potentially conflicting apps. My apps are now down from 40++ to just 10. Uninstallation was done one by one, to potentially identify the culprit app. I didn’t find it. The error still appears
7) Google Maps works fine. GPS test & GPS status apps also show good signal. However, compared to my wife’s Galaxy Note II, my S4 has In Use/In View satellites=8/10 vs Note II=13/20. See attached print screens for mine & wife’s. I checked further and found that my S4 doesn’t detect GLONASS satellites (I read that GPS satellites numbers are 1-64, and GLONASS satellites are 65-92). So far, I have narrowed down to this issue on why my S4 GPS performance is poor. When the number of satellites connected is less, I believe it gets disconnected more easily. Can this be correct? Can you show your GPS status print screen for your S4? Is it true S4 doesn’t have GLONASS support? As per Antutu device info, under transmission, it says, support GPS and support A-GPS, but doesn’t say support GLONASS. If it does support GLONASS, how do we activate it?
I really like Waze, because it connects to foursquare, which allows me to find more places easily. If you can help me solve this problem, it'd be greatly appreciated
Thank you

Thanks carlosm15. So, it's confirmed that S4 with Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5410 chip is GLONASS capable. I was afraid it doesn't because in the comparison here, http://system-on-a-chip.findthebest.com/compare/288-328/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-APQ8064-vs-Samsung-Exynos-5-Octa-5410, S4 Qualcomm uses gpsOneGen GPS chip which specifically states with GLONASS, whilst Exynos has embedded GPS chip, but it doesn't state whether it is GLONASS capable.
Mine is as attached. It only shows one square, ie GLONASS, no 193, which doesn't get connected. The no of satellites connected is also low at 8nos compared to your 13 nos, and in view satellites of 12 nos compared to your 24 nos. Another strange behaviour is when it gets disconnected from the GPS, when I go to GPS test, it shows many satellites, but it doesn't get connected ie greyed as per the 2nd print screen attached. I think I want to reflash the ROM to see whether it'll fix this issue

Refresh the A-GPS data and look if you can connect to another satellites... in gps status, under tools tab... Download the recent data and test...

GPS?!

Why has this been brushed over? Is GPS ironed out here? From what I can tell, Samsung has a horrible front end for their GPS with the Galaxy S line and a weak/insensitive GPS antenna to boot
I don't have a Galaxy S to compare, but on my Tab it seems to be working just fine. Better than on my G1 even. I just got six satellites and a very quick lock, and I'm currently indoors, just sitting next to the window(yes, writing this on the Tab).
Yep mine is just fine. I keep agps off in Google maps and its very accurate - more so than my moto milestone.
EDIT typos.
No GPS issue. This have been noted in preliminery reviews all over the web.
Size matters
Wonder if it has a different chip inside than the galaxy phones. If not then we can probably port the tab OS to the galaxy phones.

Yes, the Tab does appear to have a good GPS function. I've got the Tab sitting next to my Galaxy S near the window at the moment. The Tab can see 7, with a lock on 6; the Galaxy S can also see 7 with a solid lock on 4.
Coincidentally, I did a 'wardrive' test on the tram ride to work this morning. The Tab was tucked comfortably into the inside pocket of my heavy winter coat, producing good results.
Mind you, I've also had pretty good results under identical conditions from my Galaxy S.
I don't quite understand the recent fuss that seems to have been made concerning the strengths and weaknesses of the Galaxy S; after all, it's simply a GPS-enabled consumer grade handset.

Hello...One question if I may:
Since Android (eclair and froyo) doesn't have proper or at least clear connectivity control, how do you make sure agps is off and why do you keep it off?
Just curious......

Please! Let him answer.... it's about A-gps (full assisted gps -SUPL) and nothing to do with the internal gps receiver.....
.
I'm pleasantly surprised by how good the internal dedicated GPS receiver is. I have an external bluetooth GPS unit (Sirf III) but I will probably not need it with the Galaxy Tab.
As for the A-GPS feature, it can easily be switched-off completely via the system settings panel.

Where exactly in settings?
Location and security ( wireless networks) ?
In the froyo I have (JPA firmware of the sgs) there isnt a clear a-gps settting/key to disable like in the Symbian Os for instance....

Believe it says check here if you want to use wireless networks for location.
I was amazed at how fast mine got a lock in downtown Vancouver, my Galaxy S (and my Milestone and my Blackberry and my...) all too quite awhile to get a good fix when surrounded by office towers, the Tab is much faster.

That's not aGPS.
I'm happy to hear this anyway. The GPS on my current Vibrant is OK, the ones I had before we're pathetic though.
I have a Captivate and just picked up the Tab for Verizon. I have to say that the Captivate's GPS is fickle at best, but it is a completely opposite with the Tab. It locks on immediately when I am outside and at most 15 seconds indoors. I really hope it is a software problem, but I also wonder if they both have the same GPS antenna. It scares me that it might actually be the Captivate's hardware if they aren't the same.
I'm pretty sure the Captivate uses the metal back for it's GPS antenna. The Captivate's I tried at the AT&T store locked on pretty quickly, no test of tracking accuracy of course. I have my old Vibrant next to my New (but obviously previously owned) Vibrant and the GPS is obviously much better on this new one I have now.. SNR's are much higher, it's picking up more birds and when navigating my old one gets big circles around my location and often blips up on accuracy.
The CDMA/GSM-WCDMA versions have different GPS receivers. I know for a fact that the GSM-WCDMA Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab share GPS receiver chips so it should be the same for the CDMA versions.

Based on my gps experience with the sgs international, I can say that eventhough the Broadcom chipset is not that dependable on full agps (supl)support, it's still much less capable than sirfstar chipsets....

Using the Galaxy Note 10.1 as your GPS... works great!

I had tested the Transformer Prime in the past and as we all know, the GPS didn't work unless you used the GPS Extension Kit. With the Galaxy Note 10.1, the GPS is great!
Does it come with GPS?
I thought it was assisted (needs wifi or 3g)?

l just drove 2 days and 1000km with the note 10.1 using google maps and the save maps offline feature - zoomed out as far as possible when saving the maps since seems you can only save 6? and the GPS worked perfectly. I've heard it can sometimes skip roads in g maps, but that's due to g maps not being 100 % accurate? Didn't notice at all this trip. Plus on power saving mode it lasted 2 days being used almost constantly. Was impressed since reviews didn't seem to laud the battery life.

Ill try this mode out then use cpu spy to see what the reduced top speed is. I get great battery life w/ power savings off.

Problem with rooting

So I'm trying to root my SM-G900H. When i do the volume down + home button + power button combo I get into a blue screen with Korean writing ( I was able to find a translation online, its factory mode as shown in image).
Anyways Odin doesn't detect my phone in this mode and I can't find any other key combinations to enter a different mode.
This phone is really frustrating me because it's a European model, and there's less info about it.
Anyone have any ideas?
You should provide a lot more detail about your phone. It would be great if you installed and ran the Samsung Phone Info app too.
Your difficulties might be because of a foreign language ROM. We don't know since you didn't provide any information about your firmware version, baseband or anything else for us to go on. But it sounds like you might have a S5 clone. Run the app and provide more details, so that someone can help you sort it out.
.
Thanks
Thanks for the reply. Here's more information about my phone. I couldn't install the app because I am actually trying to root so i could resolve an internal storage error. And yes I've been wondering if it's a clone. It does have the 16mp camera, and i think clones come with 13MP. But I am not sure if that is a reliable way to tell.

Yeah i saw that after i posted. I resized it so its actually readable if you zoom in now.
Thanks for reposting the screen shot.
I won't say it's conclusive evidence, but based on the kernel /baseband version, I'd say that I'm about 99% sure that you have a clone there (sorry, if that is unexpected news). Appears to be one of the better clones FWIW, probably the Goo phone.
Try this.. set your camera resolution to max, take some photos and then move them to your PC. If the file size is actually 8 MB instead of 16 MB, that would pretty much confirm it as a clone. If you want to go the extra step, an extended benchmark suite would clearly tell you if it was a clone (MT processor class performance) or a genuine S5 which would benchmark much higher scores.
Do not use firmware, rooting methods, Odin or any XDA advice unless it is specifically labeled as being for your clone or you may permanently brick your phone. Clones are not the same internally as the original models. You need to search a forum like china-devices.com for clone specific advice on how to root, repair, restore firmware and so forth.
You haven't provided much detail yet, but you appear to have this clone model:
http://www.dhgate.com/product/octa-core-mtk6592-goophone-s5-1-1-sm-g900/184825442.html
http://www.china-devices.com/Thread-Rooting-new-octacore-S5
Good luck
.
Thanks so much for all your help! I've bassicaly spent the whole day today trying to figure out if it's a clone.
The model you suggested has an 8mp camera, and my phone has a 16mp. So that's throwing me off. Other signs do suggest it's a clone.
I'll do more research to see if they have clones with 16mp cameras.

Did you actually take a picture and look at the file size in a PC file browser and find it to be 16 MB? If not, then you are likely being mislead by erroneous information in the settings menu or some app.
Don't assume, take a picture and check the actual file size.
.
So I took a picture and then converted resolution to megapixels and got about 14.7mp. Close enough?
Here's what's interesting. In details of picture it said my model is SM G900F, whereas settings and boot up say SM G900H

No not good enough /close enough, because you didn't explain in detail how you did that conversion. Ideal would be posting a link to the full size, unmodified image or at least what was the original filesize in Megabytes of the image from the camera?
Regardless of the answer, the evidence, limited as it is, still strongly points to a clone. One with an upgraded camera, if the file size supports that conclusion. If you search Goo phone posts in that case, you'd probably find that their latest iteration has upgraded the camera.
By all means check all of the details. It would be great if somehow it turns out to be legit. But that would take lottery type odds - it would be rather difficult to explain away the kernel and baseband information. You also alluded to other anomalies so as much as I sympathize, it's going to turn out to be a clone.

If you don`t have a Exynos or Qualcomm cpu but a MT(K) you have a fake device.

Install CPU-Z or CPU identifier from Play and it will identify your phone ans cpu.
Fake?
So I ran CPU Z and this is what it shows. Is my device fake?
Also cpu z shows that i have 1080p screen. i ran another app (phone information) and that shows different stats (720p screen)

Its a clone, the samsung octacore 5422 in the original S5 runs at 4x1,9 Ghz (A15) and 4x1,3 Ghz (A7).

How do you verify a camera sensor

What makes a difference between a cheap hundred dollar China phone and A $600 galaxy is very often the camera besides cpu ram etc
I want to verify if my j i a y u s3 really has
The Sony sensor IMX215 that it claims to have
apps like CPU Z only tell you chipset and computer cpu , nothing about the camera sensor module .
Someone please tell me how this can be done.

AnTuTu Benchmark
(The application that you need)
You can check your hardware specifications and there manufacturers. Play store link below
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sQFjAA&usg=AFQjCNG-CVf_epu-PJmZEbs46WHTCyDgEA
BTW
$100 phone has limited features. Its just a A+ copy of the original phone.
Even display pixel density is low, Processor, ram is low
Doesn't have each sensor and obviously you wouldn't get warranty.
Hope you found this helpful

Everyone knows about antutu .
Its like me asking what car does Obama use on vacations and you tell me he uses a black Lincoln when he is in white house.
I think that would be fairly obvious... But thanks for replying at least anyway, better than those keeping quiet over this important issue !!!
That is not going to tell me anything about the camera sensor , my friend
all it then tells me is what is the maximum capacity in terms of MP. It does not even tell me the image output is genuine or interpolated.
On a Linux desktop you can run lShw
And get some info off devices connected and I figured adb wd would be closest
but I was trying to find out if there's something from within the phone itself
The folders under under root do not yield much information

Your question wasn't that specific!
I don't think there's any file in root that contains such information.
There can be an application but you need to search a lot

android s actually Linux.
if a device is connected then it hardware specs should be available with some method. And I am asking this question to figure out how to identify the camera and it's module that is used which in turn should bring me to the sensor
And you know what....... When all these manufacturers claim that the sensor is a Sony I asked them more specs ... Tell me what type of sensor is it and they avoid answering the question.
because the specifications are all fabricated and they are lying
from my L200 using XDA Free mobile app
I used Aida64 on my Galaxy Note 3 and it shows the brand, model and some other parameters. Hopefully it will be useful for your question.
Yes it does. this is the first app that actually digs deeper like l s h w and tell you what the phone has inside and rightly so it does have an Imx214 sensor
But from the pictures it takes which I am not at all bad I kind of feel I need something with bigger mp size and and dual sim and the only other option is xperia z series.

Still worth buying Yotaphone 2? (August 2016)

I'm looking for a cool, unique phone. I don't use my phone much, mostly for SMS, playing music on the way to/from work, Waze, Uber, and a lot of reading the Web and Reddit. No heavy games.
As some have mentioned, there are sites where it's about $200 CAD, which I'm assuming is them getting rid of stock.
Any thoughts? It's either the Yotaphone 2, something else, or wait until the bendy Galaxy S8
Hi Jonathan
As a very proud and happy Yotaphone 2 owner, I definitely recommend it.
First of all, I'm still in love with its second screen.
My main EPD panel shows clock & battery+ notifications + switch tools (mobile data, wifi...). Think that all these infos and options are always displayed and accessible with a double-tap, and that's perfect. When you discover that it's possible, you realize that should be mandatory for every device, in fact.
I think I use the EPD 80% of the time, it's perfect for all the messaging apps, for example. Twitter also works very well. Generally, I find activities like typing or reading very nice on the EPD, because you can take your time. It may not seem like an obvious edge, but I came to the conclusion that's soothing and good for mental health.
Aging? I think I'm not a smartphone power user, like you, and I don't play much. Yet, it still perfectly handles Internet navigation and apps (GMaps, Pokémon,...).
And, last but not least, the people around me love it. It draws attention, and for some, it's even viewed as some kind of magical device.
Beautiful, nice to handle, build quality, there's so much good to say about this device that I can't do it alone. For me, its bigger flaws were related to my extensive use of the EPD : no EPD backlight, the lack for more and more EPD apps, and their lack of features (compared to the not-EPD apps), but even that is improving with system updates (another big one rolled just yesterday, in Europe). It could also use SD card and second SIM slots, but it would be too close to perfection.
Thanks to the guys in Yota.

Hi MonsieurSun, thanks for your opinion.
I also interested in that device and this is one of the forums with more Info about it.
I have been reading and I have thought about buying a case tpu but do not know whether to buy also screen saver. I would like to know your opinion also on better version of firmware and the various extensions to the EPD screen I've seen on the forum. Thank you and sorry for my English.
Hello
You are asking about the accessories, right ?
I just bought a plain black bumper a while ago, and nothing else. It cost around 10€ and saves the phone from bad falls (it did for me twice) and protects both screens. My screens still look like pristine ones, one year after purchase.
The most recent firmware EU .124 I already mentioned contains a lot of nice improvements and fixes, though it also brought one new and annoying bug : the EPD screen randomly (haven't found any specific pattern yet) freezes when typing SMS. It can be de-frozen with a simple lock/unlock, but it happens often to me. This is the only drawback so far, the update is very, very useful, but it's pretty obvious and upsetting.
As for applications, I installed several EPD tools from the store or from the forum, mostly the ones adding switches, but I ended up disappointed. My wild guess is that most of them would need me to root the device to bypass some privileges to work well, and I don't plan to root it. Typically, I wanted a mobile data and GPS switch, but these just invoke the parameter page where you have to switch the... well, switch, yourself.
I also installed a Playstore clock app with more infos, but the clock does not refresh itself every second, and minutes can go by without displaying the right time. Pretty useless.
To sum it up, I think that most of these apps work fine if you use them on a rooted phone, unlike me.
The EPD apps delivered by Yota work fine, and there's a thread around here just about ideas for new EPD apps.

The phone is already on the way and a bumper too. Thanks for your help, I'll keep reading the forum.
>It could also use SD card and second SIM slots, but it would be too close to perfection.
Does it have a SD-Slot?
No, it does not have any extra slots. I still don't have any issue with its 32 Go storage, but I guess some will.
To me, the extra screen is a nicer bonus
And I should also mention something about its charger. It's a nice-looking one (lights up when charging), and it looks very fast compared to most ones I saw before and since. Full charge from zero is done in less than 2 hours. I saw some deep review about it somewhere in the forums...

Well, I don't know anything about rooting yet, sorry.
But is your yotafon working fine anyway ?
Yd206 or yd201?
Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a yotaphone 2.
But which one should I buy?
Hardware info about both is a bit fuzzy.
Am I correct that yd206 has Snapdragon 801 and yd201 has Snapdragon 800?
Im on European 4g T-Mobile network, so supported band might be an issue.
Please if someone has any info, respond here
Thanks.
The only chinese shop with the current low price (120-140€) that offers the international version with all 4G LTD bands is coolicool.
Check it there. I orderded there a couple weeks ago. Still waiting to receive it.

Efox has it too for similar price (http://www.efox-shop.com/yotaphone-...moled-fhd-bildschirm-android-44-4g-l-g-297740). Efox has not-so-great user-experiences lately, so might hesitate to buy there..
I like to hear whether there are more differences between the two models (Snapdragon 800-801?)
For this price I also can buy the Xiaomi redmi Note 3 Pro or LeEco (LeTV) Le 2 X620, which have double the Antutu score AND are supported above Android 5.0.
But they are less cool, without the E-Ink :-/
Quite in two minds here...

Antelife, tinydeal, coolicool, efox-shop, myefox ...aaand probably some more I don't remember a.t.m - it is all the same seller. AFAIK they even share the same PayPal account (AUKEY INTERNATIONAL LIMITED). So it doesn't really matter which one you'll choose - but I'd advise you to pay with PayPal and use their protection if sth. goes wrong.
I have ordered my YD201 @efox for 129€ + ~15€ taxfree shipping to EU, but with code YP15 you'll get 15€ off so it's like a free shipping.

Both models have snap 801 (there's a new review by s7yler on YT - he had YD201 and you can see on his video that cpu-z shows 801).
Only difference is in radios (and preinstalled OS).

I have BV6000, I easly get on it over 60hrs per charge with 10hrs SOT - but mostly I use it for reading stuff (web browsing, ebook, mail) so I want to give that yotaphone a try. If it won't fit my expectations I'll just resell it.

My previous phone was a XRN3Pro and it's a better phone that YP2 in all specs (great camera, batery, SOC, etc.) I buy a YP2 because I really interested in the epd screen and I read a lot in my phone.

Strange that every seller says it has Snapdragon 800 inside. Well, maybe not so strange since you say Aukey is the main firm above them all. Once bad info is there, than it'll be everywhere down the branch

It states Snapdragon 800 over whole internet - great example of global copy-paste, where some info was repeated so many times that it became official :/
HERE is post from Yotaphone representative, where he states, that those devices has Snapdragon 801 (a part written with bold letters - it's in russian, but any translator will help U).

I had 2/16 version of RMN3P - grreat device ...with medium screen and camera quality. As ygrigory wrote before - it is overall newer and better device (spec-wise ...but still midrange, so I'm not talking about build quality here). If you will have EPD as a fancy gadget, I guess that in a long run you'll regret buying YP2. But if you read a lot ...you need to answer yourself - do you really need a higher Antutu score?

Hi Mc_Gee, any tips on how to get the YT15 code working?
I put the phone in shopping cart, enter YT15 code and on next page I select second shipping option, German express (zollfrei) for €13,00. This is just added to the phone price of 129,99. So coupon not working (yet).
Hope you can help. Greetz edit* doh, it's YP15... which doesn't work either
