Hi all,
I have an sm-n900. I am seeing some issue with the phone display. Please check the attached video (sorry for the poor quality).
As can be seen, with that particular background image, when I quickly move between the home screens, purple artifacts can be seen on the google now widget. I have observed the same with a few other white widgets as well.
Is it a display problem or something inherent with all note 3 displays ?
It would be really helpfull if someone could try the same on their note 3 with the same background image and Google now widget. You have to flick the homes screen so that it fully moves the next screen.

I know about the purple effect. But that is seen when greys and blacks are involved. Basically when the pixels have to move from black to something else.
But here that is not the case. The wallpaper has shades of green and the widget is white. !!!
So any idea... I had actually shown this to the service center. They offered to change the display. I got it back day before yesterday. I checked after getting back and there it was again. Now, I don't know if it is because they did not actually change the display or if it is because this is an inherent issue with the Note 3 display.I have informed this to the service center as well.
If a few more people could try this on their phones and update, we could atleast conclude that this is an inherent issue. Then I wouldn't have to waste more time at the service center !!!
Anyone ? Any thoughts ?
Can someone else try this please.. ?
Would be a big help. I dont wanna go behind the service center guys if this is an inherent problem with the note 3 display.

I bought an i9505 today. I noticed very bad scrolling artifacts especially on a black background. This can be best seen when scrolling up and down in a menue in the preferences. The white letters on black background smear alot. This effect gets worse when turning brightness down. The responsiveness of the s4 display seem quite bad. The s3, which i also own does a whole lot better in this regard.
Can other S4 owners confirm this problem? Has the octa the same problem? Main reason i bought this phone was the oled display. I am quite dissapointed.

something is definitely wrong with it. exchange it immediately in case something is wrong with the second one.
Mine does it too. Most noticeable scrolling through contacts.

So if I am not the only one experiencing this it seems to be an inherent problem of the new amoled. In theory amoled has a very fast response time. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the s4 displays true black i.e. the screen is absolutely black in black areas of the screen. The s3 does not turn the pixels completely off, it has blacker blacks than lcd but no absolute blacks like the s4. I am sure Samsung did this for a reason in th s3, maybe to avoid the problem we are experiencing with the s4. I wonder why none of the reviews reports about this issue.

Mine doesn't smear when scrolling unless you mean if you scroll fast it looks smeared? I put that down to scrolling quicker than my eyes can focus if yours is smearing when moving slowly then I'd swap it!

The effect can be best seen on black background with brightness set to low. For example when scrolling in preferences watch the horizontal grey sepparation lines. When scrolling slowly the almost dissapear on my phone. So maybe one should not call it smearing but there clearly visible moving arifacts on my phone.

I have the same problem. It is annoying in black backgrounds whith grey letters.
I noticed this straight away and started a thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252445 (5 pages long already)
My S3 does not suffer with this problem at all.
The screen is a step down apart from the blacks which are much deeper.
My issue: the red subpixels stay on, this is the SGS4 and SGS2 viewing the same 100% black image.
The effect is a bit more dramatic on these pics than real life, to get a proper exposure. The red pixels are only at low intensity, but it's still easily noticeable.
Hi.
I had the same problem with I9505OXAAMDE firmware. I update firmware to I9505OXAAMDM and subpixels are ok. Now my screen is black, but now i have smearing in setup menu and contact.
I hope that in the future fix this problem.

Interesting. You did not have the 'smearing' before? Because I do see some of that also. On i9505-XXUAMDF.
In the previous firmware did not have smearing.

This is being discussed extensively in the international version forum. Those without red tinted blacks have smearing with grey on black colors, like in the menu screen. Those with red tinted blacks have little to no smearing. My device and a few other ATT S4 owners have confirmed that they have a red tint to mostly black screens in very low light. My question is, those of you with pitch black screens (even in a dark room), are you seeing any smearing or ghosting when scrolling in the menu screen? I want to see if the US variants actually have screens that don't have either issue.
Absolutely. I have the black crush pretty bad on mine. I went into AT&T today and checked the display models and both of them did it also. I made a video of it for those who don't know what we are talking about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yL5TV8kuxac&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I have a brand new S4 from Bell Mobility Canada. The smearing/clipping as well.
Any confirmed setting/etc that can be changed?
I first noticed it scrolling the settings menu....I remember seeing the S4 video clips where that same menu used to be white....
i got it too.
I have the smearing but it turns out that it's not as bad as I thought it'd be. I'll have to watch some videos when I get home but for now I think I'm okay with it.
If you have smearing, download Screen Adjuster and change the red blue and green to +5 or higher. Its been reported to fix the smearing and keep blacks black. For the red tint black, nothing you can do atm.

"bala_gamer" came up with this fix. Props to him. I agree, Samsung should have fixed this already. The "smearing" thread in the international S4 forum is getting a little out of control and Samsung just keeps dicking around, turning the red pixels on and off in each firmware iteration lol
I have an AT&T S4 and my black are 100% black. If I load a black image in the dark it looks as if the screen is off. How it should be

This actually helped to fix it, the issue was happening before and after the OTA, so it looks like the OTA didn't include anything to help that.
I had to set it higher though, is this hardware issue though?
I saw some ppl saying they didnt had the problem.

Everything ive read in the international S4 forum, except those very few who claim otherwise, suggest that either you have red tinted blacks OR you get smearing but have pure blacks...its one or the other. If someone really doesnt have either, i'd be surprised at this point. I thought maybe the US version was fixed, but no.
Its a hardware issue that seems to be addressable by software fixes, but if Samsung neglects it....well...thats a different story. Having to run Screen Adjustor and pushing the colors up is not without consequences. For one, i think its going to affect battery life. Someone reported that this fix made the slight pinkish tint on his screem even worse, so its not a perfect fix.
Per OP....I DO NOT have red tinted black. Phone is CRYSTAL clear and crisp.

Hi Guys
I got my Note 3 today. The first thing i saw was this purple Ghostimg..
Uncheck Auto Brightness and set the slider to -5.
Then in Settings and Contacts you can see Smearing like on the S4 (not that bad but its there)
If you use Tapatalk change to dark theme and scroll slowly..
The Grey Text gets purple... When you stop scrolling its grey..
This Su***
Sorry for my bad english
Sorry for DP
You can also see it in LCD Test (Amoled Ready) App.
Change Brightness to lowest possible level.. Then switch between black and darker grey.. You can see a purple bar between them
Edit: I tried the S4 Fix. Changed Contrast to -10 (with Screen Adjuster) and Smearing is completely gone
so note 3 screen is fine then?
Thinking of buying the Note 3 but really wanna know how bad the smearing issue is cause i bought the Galaxy s4 on launch day and couldn't live with the smearing issue ( my girlfriend also bought a Galaxy s4 on launch day and still has it..she didn't think the smearing was annoying..i hated it )
Could someone with a Note 3 try both things explained below on low brightness
1. Download zedge and search for black wallpapers..then while scrolling thru the wallpapers..do you so smearing..purple glow on the grey background in zedge between the wallpapers?
2. Choose a black wallpaper as background and install nova launcher...then on the homescreen set a widget with some grey in it like the stock music player widget and scroll between the homescreens...and also with some icons on the homescreens?
On the Galaxy s4 doing the above there was a lot of smearing..purple glow visible even after the fix from samsung cause they only fixt it in the samsung framework

Edit: Tested Zedge... Between Black and Grey Wallpapers massive Smearing.. very very bad :/
Yeah Samsung will fix this for sure.. But in Tapatalk ect Smearing will still be there

Gee, I have this issue with my Galaxy S4. I don't have the Note 3 but considering they have the same screen technology, the issue is probably with the hardware.
I've attached a picture which really shows the smearing.
1. Set brightness to lowest.
2. Open the attached picture in the galaxy app.
3. Zoom in on the picture.
4. Scroll up and down. You'll see purple shadow around the black edge.

I noticed it when browsing several forums that have darker themes, any black/grey transitions smear terribly with purple..
I don't think it's a screen tech thing, because fast moving films with dark scenes don't seem to smear, it only seems in the rendering of UI stuff..
It is hardware problem?
Sent from my GT-N7000
I think I read it is a screen tech thing - a side effect of the deepest blacks produced by turning off the pixels altogether. Then the smearing is caused by the pixels being turned on again but not quite fast enough. At least I think that was the theory.

I tried with the picture someone attached, zoomed in with lowest brightness and moved the picture around. I was not able to see anything weird.
Definitely has it on mine at lower brightnesses, got it yesterday. VERY easily noticed in Tweetings where mentions are in a grey-ish colour. Only does it on text at basically minimum brightness, so I can live with it. Really bugged me on my S4 on text as it was apparent at slightly higher brightnesses.

That one of the only things that I hate about Samsung, because almost all their products are either manufactured in different places or use different internals for the same phone quality standards just seem to vary too much between each one.

so I don't think its a hardware defect more an software thing...

I don't see any uneven tint in gray, white or any other color..... ONLY the yellow uneven tint on black background in settings, messaging...

I notice it in the play store and chrome too...
I used to have a Galaxy Nexus which suffered from a yellow tint problem. I got several replacement units but they were all the same. My carrier refused to acknowledge it as a fault until a few months later when I saw a friend's Galaxy Nexus without the issue. I took a photo of the two phones side-by-side and sent it to my carrier. They finally admitted the problem and sent me a Galaxy Note 2 as a replacement phone.
I think that there are sometimes manufacturing issues with amoled screens. In my case, there was clearly an entire batch of phones with the problem.
The best thing to do is to go to a retailer (not the same retailer where you bought yours) and ask them nicely to show you a Galaxy Note 3 so you can compare the quality of the screen. Take a digital camera with you and if the units are different, take a photo of them side-by-side. Sent the photo to the retailer you got your phone from, or to Samsung (assuming you haven't tripped the Knox flag and if you have you might be covered anyway if you're in the EU) and ask for a replacement from a different batch.

The vertical bands are only really visible on flat colours, but the green glow affecting the top two thirds of the display are always there on dark greys. I sent back my original Galaxy S4 for exactly the same problem...... Comparing this to my wife's Note 3, hers is perfect. Just curious how common this is with these screens. Easiest way to reproduce the issue is on Chrome with no tabs open, backlight set to minimum and with low/no ambient light. I like reading with white text on a black background, so it really bugs me :/

Interesting. Maybe your wife's note 3 was made/assembled in a different factory than the two you had. You can check where it is made by pulling the battery a looking underneath (you will see Vietnam, China, or Korea ..threse are the most likely ..but it could be some other country since Samsung has a several factories.)
My advice is replace it again but this time check it in the store before taking it home.

Like previous responses have indicated, I would swap out your device ASAP and hopefully it's still within the return policy otherwise, you'll need to warranty it under the standard manufacturer warranty. This is not uncommon as you have to realize these devices are being mass produced. The odds of you having a similar issue with 2 devices is comical but not unheard of due to the amount of devices which are being manufactured.
Good luck with your new device and hope this post has answered your questions!
