The vertical bands are only really visible on flat colours, but the green glow affecting the top two thirds of the display are always there on dark greys. I sent back my original Galaxy S4 for exactly the same problem...... Comparing this to my wife's Note 3, hers is perfect. Just curious how common this is with these screens. Easiest way to reproduce the issue is on Chrome with no tabs open, backlight set to minimum and with low/no ambient light. I like reading with white text on a black background, so it really bugs me :/
If a lot of people had this extreme issue, you would've seen a 1000 page thread. Get an exchange asap.

Well, I must be exceptionally unlucky then to have seen the same issue on two phones in a row...... You'd be amazed at how few people will have noticed this fault, even if their phone shows it.

Interesting. Maybe your wife's note 3 was made/assembled in a different factory than the two you had. You can check where it is made by pulling the battery a looking underneath (you will see Vietnam, China, or Korea ..threse are the most likely ..but it could be some other country since Samsung has a several factories.)
My advice is replace it again but this time check it in the store before taking it home.

Like previous responses have indicated, I would swap out your device ASAP and hopefully it's still within the return policy otherwise, you'll need to warranty it under the standard manufacturer warranty. This is not uncommon as you have to realize these devices are being mass produced. The odds of you having a similar issue with 2 devices is comical but not unheard of due to the amount of devices which are being manufactured.
Good luck with your new device and hope this post has answered your questions!

Anyone but me have this problem?
Haven't checked... and not going to do either.... as it's a non issue in normal usage (i'm seldom staring at a completely white screen just to see that the status bar area has aged the screen differently) and a "feature" of amoled technology
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
It's there on most colors! I took white cause it is easier to see on a photo but it is there all the time! I'm not retarded!
And the worst part is that the little part that is whiter is the only part that is really sharp like it used to be, while the rest of the screen never is really white and sharp but instead has an uneven yellowish color. And it is worse than I could capture on photo.
I love my phone im not trying to mock it.
I'm not even gonna check
Because if I do, I'll notice it every single time I use the phone, and it'll annoy me to death.
If you don't see it you don't have it. It's there all the time. Of course it's only in games or reading stuff that is full screen. But anything except the black status bar!
Ditto problem.

I noticed it just days before you made the post, interesting timing.
Hi All,
came across this thread when looking for a solution for SGS1.
it seems that Burn in is indeed a problem for AMOLED screens.
in my situation, I've found a burn cause by Waze (of course, any app that would leave the screen on would cause it).
sadly enough, my phone is only 6 months old and I use Waze ~30 min. a day - not much for a burn you think? wrong!
for now, I've set Waze to hide the point bar and the zoom control, but still many objects on the screen are static - including the notification bar.
does anyone has a good solution?
Same problem!
But in reality it is not a real problem..
AMOLED is still not ready for prime time, but at least Samsung is trying to improve on it with every iteration. Can't wait for 40"+ AMOLED HD TVs.
Before waranty goes off demand to change display..

Hey there, might be interesting to know on which built your phone is operating?
Mine was delivered in may w/ 2.3.3, since I'm on a 2.3.5 based rom, I got better colors / sharpness and less side effects (greenish tint)
Maybe Samsung changed the way how to control the display? (hardware drivers)
just my 2 cents..
Yes
Just changed the screen last month
Now its ok
Dunno if it will be burned again
Also dunno what caused it

Irrelevant. It's an AMOLED hardware-related thing, nothing to do with software. My screen has burn-in, your screen has/will, every screen does/will.
When somebody says their screen has none they just don't see it. Because really, all our phones one day or later will show it.
I don't use any apps that ever hide the status bar so even if I did have it, it wouldn't bother me.

Hi
My notification area is a bit darker than the rest of my screen. It's only visible when screen is white, and I can't identify any leftovers from any icons like the battery or Wifi icon.
My SGS2 is about ½ year old, and in daily use it's no problem at all, but I wonder how it will look when my SGS2 is 1 or 2 years old

Yup. Easily noticeable if you put the phone on full brightness and drag down the pulldown menu.
My S2 had it much worse tho, was hoping it wouldn't happen with this phone. I guess all phone LCDs are like that?

Yeah it sucks but I guess its better then blobs and dark black spots all over the screen like in amoled screens
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
That's exactly what my s2 had. And yeah it's hardly noticeable if the screen isn't full brightness. I never have it on max anyway, I find it too bright and it ruins the contrast somewhat

Yuuup I see it.

Yep I have them as well but never noticed them before. I really had to look hard to see them, and only on full brightness. It's a non-issue for me.
i noticed this too...didn't have it as bad as my other n4 that i had to rma. i actually notice lines and blobs. mostly noticeable on grey backgrounds like jb menus. really hated the blobs on amoled screens but seems like lcd's get it too
One the biggest reasons I am hesitating to upgrade from my S3 is just that, defects... they seem rampant with this phone. I have not a single defect on my S3, and there are no screen oddity's to speak of.

You don't have lines or blobs on the s3? It's a amoled screen
I have an iphone 4 for 2 years and don't notice these line, Yet when I first got the Nexus I could see it right away, Looking at my old iphone 4 and no line at all. Most be a lg screen built quality.
Just got my n4 yesterday and it was flawless until earlier tonight while web browsing a vertical line appeared to the far left of the screen it sticks out like a sore thumb against white backgrounds like most web pages.its very irritating and even blinks in and out.I swore I'd never buy lg after the g2x screen disaster but had to its a nexus do I so sold my gs3 yesterday and now I'm stuck with this annoying line.even if I RMA it will take forever to get a new one.
Wait, the IPS+ on the Nexus 4 has vertical banding? I thought that that problem was exclusive to the Super AMOLED HD on the Galaxy Nexus. In fact, I exchanged 3 of them to get one with banding that didn't show on all backgrounds. So as I now understand it, this was not an AMOLED HD problem?
Could it be a software thing? My old Droid X's non-HD LCD never seemed to have these issues. Neither does the SLCD3 screen of the Droid DNA. Very weird.

Lol, I don't know what you've been reading about amoled screens but they're not as rampant with problems as everyone makes them out to be. I'm I'm my third phone with an amoled panel and they've all been perfect. No yellow tint, no blobs, etc. The only issue I ever encountered was the first s2i had, had a dead pixel. Aside from that they're incredible. Prefer them to any LCD screen personally, and I'm a full times graphics artist )

If you put the phone on lower brightness or auto-brightness, do you see faint vertical and horizontal "streaks" of discoloration or shading? It's especially apparent in the dark, and on grey backgrounds. My phone has this exact problem, and I tried taking it to a Verizon store to exchange it and they refused, because the two S4's on display had similar issues (although less apparent). So either this is a very common problem on the S4 or I'm just incredibly unlucky. Would like to hear from other Galaxy S4 owners to see how widespread this really is.

I didn't get a 1-1. Went to the service centre. First time it was an issue with the sound crackling but somehow they changed the screen when they shouldn't (and I still hate them for it).
The replaced screen had a greenish blotch in the middle, so back it went.
Third had two dead pixels so I sent it back.
Fourth they replaced on the spot for it had a big piece of dust inside the screen.
Fifth has a small speck of dust under the screen which they refused to change for me in the end.
Still quite a bummer that five screens later I still ended up with a less-than-perfect screen. But I just gave up and it doesn't affect me too much nowadays.
I have the same problem.

Yup, I have this issue too on my international S4 (GT-I9500). This only happens with grey. The screen tests for red, green and blue are perfect. And they're only usually visible in the dark. Best way to show them the problem is to search 'solid grey' on Google Images, save one of them and show them the image on full screen in the dark. After seeing that, it'll be pretty much impossible to deny that it is a problem. I took it to service and got a screen replacement under warranty, but it didn't help. Still has those stupid lines. Most apparent in the dark on solid gray. I'm taking it back to the store on Monday, if they replace the handset and that fixes it, I'll get back to you.
Me too
I think this is another variant of the smudges that are apparent in amoled screens sometimes. Search Google for lines in amoled displays or something similar. There's loads of threads talking about the same thing.
At any rate, it seems to just be luck of the draw as to how bad it is, or if you even get it at all.
At least, if you have them, they don't worsen over time, and any phones that are made with amoled screens can get them. I have two lines myself. I've just gotten used to it really. Don't see them now, unless I look hard for them.

So. I'm trying to decide between the Galaxy S4 i9505 and the HTC One, and the only thing that bothers me with the S4 is the fact that AMOLED screens are capable of screen burn-in. I didn't see a single thread about S4 screen burn-in, but I know that for example the S3 had issues with screen burn-in too. I never used any smartphone except for Xperias, which always use TFT screens, so I don't have any experiences. My question is: Should I worry about screen burn-in or is it fixed? I would use the Google Edition rom which has black statusbar if that matters. Thanks in advance, ChongWiz

Hello friend, I too hate the screen burn-ins of SAMOLED screens. The screen on the S3 definitely had screen burn-ins (especially visible in dark rooms showing black images) but on my S4 I havent seen ANY screen burn ins at all. Yes the whites looks blueish and yes there is purple smear but the display still is amazing and doesnt have burn-ins :good:
Owned all versions of the galaxy series and I've never had permanent screen burn. Lots of screen on time keep most devices 2 years and no noticeable dimming either.

Thanks for the answers, now I'm sure I will get an S4 asap. Good day for everyone!
all OLED screen will burn in by design, include AMOLED, the different is just how serious, my 2 years old S2 have a little burn in at the notification bar (for the battery icon and clock area)
p.s. the blue color is the worst one, and green is the least, due to the material in use
In the video in the review below, the reviewer said that she had started to see burn-in on her S4 are only 1 month.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_APG3kLiYs
EDIT: though i have never see any burn-in on my S3 after several months, though i kept the brightness low and did not keep the screen on for an extended time with a static image.

Based on what??? All Amoled screens will burn in. All... of... them... Yours will as well. Apparently not everybody sees it but it will, 100.00% sure.
It remains an awesome screen though :good:
meh, had S3 for 7 months, not a single trace of burn in (checked with RGB full screen tests). i think people who get burn do too much of same stuff, if you message all day long and nothing else, messaging interface might burn in and such.
if you are a "normal" user, who doesn't get stuck up on one particular task all the time, you'll be fine.
I actually owned the whole Galaxy Series SGS1 to now SGS4 and i never had the burn-in issue yet to date, i owned every phone about a year and sold them to got friends of mine and still if i look at their phones i can't notice burn-in at least on the SGS3 i was last week, my GNex which had AMOLED too has a bit of a burn-in but not that you may say "omg that looks awful", you really have to look very closely, i actually think in that time where burn-in gets a serious issue you have a new phone anyway.
I had horrible burn in on my Note I.
Could see the full keyboard like a shadow.
Same with the top bar. Could see the battery icon & alarm icon.
finally got it replaced (screen only).
Burn in came back though.
Screen was noticeably brighter when replaced.

So are there any known issues that would need returning? I know of the screen white balance inconsistency problem and that is something I will check first thing.
