Note 3 has Smearing, Ghosting - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys
I got my Note 3 today. The first thing i saw was this purple Ghostimg..
Uncheck Auto Brightness and set the slider to -5.
Then in Settings and Contacts you can see Smearing like on the S4 (not that bad but its there)
If you use Tapatalk change to dark theme and scroll slowly..
The Grey Text gets purple... When you stop scrolling its grey..
This Su***
Sorry for my bad english

Sorry for DP
You can also see it in LCD Test (Amoled Ready) App.
Change Brightness to lowest possible level.. Then switch between black and darker grey.. You can see a purple bar between them
Edit: I tried the S4 Fix. Changed Contrast to -10 (with Screen Adjuster) and Smearing is completely gone

so note 3 screen is fine then?

Thinking of buying the Note 3 but really wanna know how bad the smearing issue is cause i bought the Galaxy s4 on launch day and couldn't live with the smearing issue ( my girlfriend also bought a Galaxy s4 on launch day and still has it..she didn't think the smearing was annoying..i hated it )
Could someone with a Note 3 try both things explained below on low brightness
1. Download zedge and search for black wallpapers..then while scrolling thru the wallpapers..do you so smearing..purple glow on the grey background in zedge between the wallpapers?
2. Choose a black wallpaper as background and install nova launcher...then on the homescreen set a widget with some grey in it like the stock music player widget and scroll between the homescreens...and also with some icons on the homescreens?
On the Galaxy s4 doing the above there was a lot of smearing..purple glow visible even after the fix from samsung cause they only fixt it in the samsung framework
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium

For me... Its too much Smearing.. I sold my S4 because of Smearing.m And now Note3 is the same.. Bought it Yesterday.. Now i sell it on ebay.. i hate this ugly smearing.. its a no go for a 750 € Smartphone..i stay with my Note 2 -.-
Edit: Tested Zedge... Between Black and Grey Wallpapers massive Smearing.. very very bad :/
Yeah Samsung will fix this for sure.. But in Tapatalk ect Smearing will still be there

Gee, I have this issue with my Galaxy S4. I don't have the Note 3 but considering they have the same screen technology, the issue is probably with the hardware.
I've attached a picture which really shows the smearing.
1. Set brightness to lowest.
2. Open the attached picture in the galaxy app.
3. Zoom in on the picture.
4. Scroll up and down. You'll see purple shadow around the black edge.

I noticed it when browsing several forums that have darker themes, any black/grey transitions smear terribly with purple..
I don't think it's a screen tech thing, because fast moving films with dark scenes don't seem to smear, it only seems in the rendering of UI stuff..

It is hardware problem?
Sent from my GT-N7000

I think I read it is a screen tech thing - a side effect of the deepest blacks produced by turning off the pixels altogether. Then the smearing is caused by the pixels being turned on again but not quite fast enough. At least I think that was the theory.

Is it possible to remove the smearing permanently?

You can reduce it a lot by downloading screen adjuster in the playstore and set contrast to - 10 to - 15 and then press activate

This happen to every set? Or some only?

I tried with the picture someone attached, zoomed in with lowest brightness and moved the picture around. I was not able to see anything weird.

Definitely has it on mine at lower brightnesses, got it yesterday. VERY easily noticed in Tweetings where mentions are in a grey-ish colour. Only does it on text at basically minimum brightness, so I can live with it. Really bugged me on my S4 on text as it was apparent at slightly higher brightnesses.

Pink tint area in the display

I love everything about this phone except...pinky tint at the bottom 1/5 of the screen!
It's especially visible with white background. It seems that the bottom 1/5 part gets very warm when the phone is doing lots of stuff or charging battery and I think that's when the pink tint is really gettung, well pink.
I will probably exchange it once the supply gets better and my local att store gets stocks. Hopefully you guys are not experiencing this.

Thanks guys for the reply. I've got blue one. It's barely visible as my friends couldn't see it at all lol. I have really good eyes, or I have to say "trained eyes " that I do graphic arts stuff everyday. Color accuracy is critical for my job.
My S2 had blueish tint but it was uniform color temperature for the entire screen. I'm currently using app called Screen Adjuster to mitigate the issue but it doesn't solve the problem because of the uneven color temperature. I really think that the heat at the bottom part really changed the tint permanently.
I'm happy that you guys don't have such problem!

Mine has a couple of those too. From reading the international thread, it seems somewhat normal with amoled. There's a chance you will exchange it and get once that's worse....

I must say it'll be really hard to find the AMOLED screen with no ink bolbs unfortunately.. I went through 3 S2 Syrockets and 1 Playstation Vita. All of them have those blobs or lines of ink that you can see in a dark room with black or gray background. It's really prevalent issue. Personally I gave up about the issue as its only visible in some limited conditions. Sorry but if you don't have any other problems then i dont want you to exchange it with even worse unit...

Oh man I thought samsung noticed this issue with the intl version.. is it possible to use the SG3 without a simcard? I mean can I access the applications / browser using wifi without having a simcard in? I am asking because I ordered one from AT&T and I will unlock it, I don't want to unlock it then send it back if it has issues..

If you want to see if your phone has these blobs, do the following
Go into a pitch black room
Set your phone brightness to auto
Open camera app
Turn off flash
take a picture of pure darkness
View the picture in the gallery, and tap it once open so all the bars and menus go away showing nothing but the image
Inspect the screen up close, you may have to wait 5 minutes for your eyes to adjust
If you don't see those blotches, your eyes suck, didn't let them adjust enough to the dark, or you just wasted your luck on a nice phone rather than a lottery ticket!

How do you know that the blotches you see after this test are not just a camera flaw? Did you send the picture you took on the sg3 to another phone and view it again? If the bloches are there, its a camera flaw. If not, its a screen flaw.
Everysingle amoled screen that I have owned had purple tint. It is more or less common on samoled. Especially noticeable when the brightness turned to low.

Huge screen issue with i9505

I bought an i9505 today. I noticed very bad scrolling artifacts especially on a black background. This can be best seen when scrolling up and down in a menue in the preferences. The white letters on black background smear alot. This effect gets worse when turning brightness down. The responsiveness of the s4 display seem quite bad. The s3, which i also own does a whole lot better in this regard.
Can other S4 owners confirm this problem? Has the octa the same problem? Main reason i bought this phone was the oled display. I am quite dissapointed.

something is definitely wrong with it. exchange it immediately in case something is wrong with the second one.
Mine does it too. Most noticeable scrolling through contacts.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium HD app
So if I am not the only one experiencing this it seems to be an inherent problem of the new amoled. In theory amoled has a very fast response time. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the s4 displays true black i.e. the screen is absolutely black in black areas of the screen. The s3 does not turn the pixels completely off, it has blacker blacks than lcd but no absolute blacks like the s4. I am sure Samsung did this for a reason in th s3, maybe to avoid the problem we are experiencing with the s4. I wonder why none of the reviews reports about this issue.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Mine doesn't smear when scrolling unless you mean if you scroll fast it looks smeared? I put that down to scrolling quicker than my eyes can focus if yours is smearing when moving slowly then I'd swap it!
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium HD app
The effect can be best seen on black background with brightness set to low. For example when scrolling in preferences watch the horizontal grey sepparation lines. When scrolling slowly the almost dissapear on my phone. So maybe one should not call it smearing but there clearly visible moving arifacts on my phone.

I have the same problem. It is annoying in black backgrounds whith grey letters.
I noticed this straight away and started a thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252445 (5 pages long already)
My S3 does not suffer with this problem at all.
The screen is a step down apart from the blacks which are much deeper.
My issue: the red subpixels stay on, this is the SGS4 and SGS2 viewing the same 100% black image.
The effect is a bit more dramatic on these pics than real life, to get a proper exposure. The red pixels are only at low intensity, but it's still easily noticeable.
Hi.
I had the same problem with I9505OXAAMDE firmware. I update firmware to I9505OXAAMDM and subpixels are ok. Now my screen is black, but now i have smearing in setup menu and contact.
I hope that in the future fix this problem.

Interesting. You did not have the 'smearing' before? Because I do see some of that also. On i9505-XXUAMDF.
In the previous firmware did not have smearing.

[Q] Screen Quality?

Hello all! I'm still using my Galaxy Nexus (Toro) and I'm due to upgrade next month, I'm now seriously considering the Galaxy S4, but the one thing that has me concerned is the screen quality.
As some of you may already know, the Galaxy Nexus has some odd color reproduction (especially in the greys) when the screen is anything below maximum brightness. It looks like there is almost a texture to the greys, and whites when scrolling. (See photos here)
I understand that this is the nature of the display on the GNex and I've learned to just tolerate it.
I really just want to know if the S4 suffers from the same issue at all?
Thanks in advance!

I personally notice the same thing for the greys in my S4, but I think is less evident than on the Nexus (my sister has one and I compared the 2 displays). In any case I think that it is a "feature" of AMOLED displays! The white instead is perfect and believe me is the best white I've ever seen on an AMOLED display!
Screen issues on the Galaxy S4? Where do I start!
*Pink tint
*Light Banding across the screen on low brightness
*Purple smearing
*Hue changing when keyboard is toggled
*Screen flickering when using data on white Web pages
*Purple greys on low brightness
I'm sure there's more!
The S4 is the worst of the Galaxy devices for quality control.
It was rushed to market to compete with HTC and Sony and so suffers a lot of issues.
Don't get me wrong, I love my S4 but definitely check the screen as soon as you get it.

The latest update did NOT fix the smearing.
It is just no longer as noticeable in the settings of TW.
All 3rd party apps and even other parts of TW still have the purple smearing, even the stock gallery.
It is simply a drawback of the AMOLED display showing pure black by turning off the pixels.

It's just a shame Samsung were blinded by the $$$ and didn't put the S4 through proper quality control.

It's not a drawback of AMOLED it's a draw back of this display turning off pixels to make black.
The S, S2 and S3 did not shut down pixels for blacks.
You get better battery life and purer blacks on the S4 but the downside is the smearing effect.

Your right...we have to live with it...the pixel are going from off to on when scrolling through black menus..thats why this happens. ..older galaxies never actually cut off...if wanna fix this you can use screen adjuster and slightly adjust the rgb, this will stop the smearing but also stop the pixels from turning off when displaying black

I hate that on my S4, the Note 3 I played with on the weekend just gone didn't do it (thank heavens).
Awesome that the smearing is gone. Thanks for the answer.
Can somebody else who got a Note 3 check it?
I really hate it on my S4 and I'm going to sell it because of it.
To test it you can install Nova Launcher and swipe left and right in the app drawer with brightness on low. If the effect is present you will see a purple glow following bright icons.

To test it you can install Nova Launcher and swipe left and right in the app drawer with brightness on low. If the effect is present you will see a purple glow following bright icons.

Well i've been watching many YT videos and .... purple-smearing/trailing/ghosting is still present, but it depends on the brightness/contrast setting =/

Yellow tint on note 3 screen?!

Hi I have the white galaxy note 3 and I've noticed after a few weeks of using it that the screen has a slight yellowish tint. it is especially noticeable when looking at white backgrounds and on the Google home page. My gf also has the black note 3 however she got hers a month after me and I got mine the day it came out. On her screen there is no yellow tint at all and the whites are perfectly crisp white and not off white. Does anyone have a solution for this or how to fix it also the screen on her phone seems a lot more hd and clearer compared to mine, this can especially be seen at low brightness. Please help Thank you.

Really sounds like a hardware issue I'm afraid. Return it and get a replacement.

Is that literally all you can do? Cause I'm worried Carphone warehouse will be arseholes about it and not acknowledge it as an issue

Well, you can download an app called "Screen adjuster" and see if you can remove the yellow tint that way. I seriously doubt it but it's worth a shot, otherwise I don't see another way to solve this. Maybe someone else got an awesome idea. But try the app, otherwise I think it's a defect screen, unfortunately.
The yellow tint will be more noticable on Movie mode correct? How about if you switch to dynamic mode and or standard mode, do you still see yellow?
My S4 used to be slightly yellow also. As did most of my IOS phones I had before.

Nope I've never used movie mode before always been on standard, dynamic improves it slightly but the yellow is definetly still there and noticeable when looking at white backgrounds
