[Q] Performance of v500 versus v510 - G Pad 8.3 General

Hi,
Has anyone been able to actually compare the real world performance of the v500 and the v510. For anyone that doesn't know these are the non-Google play and the Google Play editions.
The hardware seems to be the same but one runs Android 4.2.2 and the other Android 4.4.2.
The original v500 seems run the chrome browser a bit laggy and I'm wondering if if the v510 does the same or does running on vanilla Android KitKat 4.4.2 help it.
Thanks
Ash.

Well it was Verge. I'm sure the article was written on an iPad sporting a picture of Steve Jobs wearing a black turtleneck for a background.

Agreed. I can't even read that crap anymore because it seems like every Android device review has an agenda. Their scores are all over the place, make no sense and are arbitrary and worse yet, they don't even add up to an average. They have the absolute worst scoring system of any website I've ever seen. The comment sections are even worse, full of Apple apologists. They have such a double standard, too. I stay far away from that website at all costs.

The review is not that bad really.
And as for comparison between the LGE and GPE this is mentioned:
The two G Pads are technologically identical — a Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 1.7GHz, and 2GB of RAM — but the Google Play Edition is faster at every turn. Chrome opens a half-second faster, and renders pages much more quickly. Multitasking menus open quicker, apps resume sooner, even the keyboard pops up a full beat earlier on the Google Play Edition G Pad 8.3. It’s not that the skinned model is slow, far from it: it plays even intensive games like Asphalt 8: Airborne well, and nothing ever felt overly laggy. But stock KitKat clearly comes with a huge speed boost, and switching from one model to the other for days at a time, I always noticed the difference.

My experience with the non GPE version as regards Chrome is that it opens near instantaneously, if the GPE version was half a second quicker it would be opening before you tapped the icon

To be fair this comparison is not quite equal. The hardware may be the same but the OS is 4.4.2 vs 4.2.2. If LG released a version of its 4.4.2 for the G Pad we'd have a much more equal comparison.

That's very true yes.

I have the non GPE and it is slow. I also have a Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 2013. The LG G pad is so much more laggy moving around the UI and opening apps. Chrome is frustrating to use and unbearable.

Not sure about unbearable, but I did return mine a month ago because of small lag issue's.
I ordered the Google edition this week, cant wait for it to get here. I prefer the smoothness of stock personally.

I have a Nexus 5 and that is absolutely not my experience. Just been comparing Chrome on both devices using the BBC website and there's very little to choose between them. The Nexus is marginally quicker at loading pages but scrolling is as smooth on both.

Same. Scrolling is super smooth, but then again I'm on a PA 4.4.

Strange , I find it a bit jerky on the v500 .....

How smooth is the browser?

Ok about to pull the trigger on it but i need to know one thing. When using boat of dolphin how smooth is the experience exactly? Ive been using android for 3 years now on HD2, galaxy tab, galaxy note and honestly none of them can match the browser experience ive found on wp7 or ios. My family has an Ipad 3 and its BUTTER SMOOTH. Have you used an IPAD? is it as smooth?
It is NOWHERE near as smooth as an iPad. I'm really disappointed by the Nexus 10. I wonder if its because if thermal throttling like the Nexus 4. Also, the screen is garbage compared to the iPad.

Obviously, you have never used an iPad. I didn't say the Nexus 10 is garbage, but when compared to the iPad, it is. It is a lot laggier, and yes, the screen is absolute crap when put next to the iPad. Go be a fanboy somewhere else. OP wants real answers, not delusional "all hail Google" crap -.-

Made a quick video on OP's question on the smoothness of Boat Browser.
Here you go:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f62XEcQDacw
From my experience it is -the- smoothest browser I've used for Android, ever.
I have no stutter, no lag, no force closes. The best part is how fast everything loads and renders.
Boat Browser is a great browser and should have came stock rather than Chrome, but we all know that would never happen.
If you get a Nexus 10, delete Chrome after rooting and use Boat Browser.

Sorry but I am not a google "fanboy" this is my first google device and spent many hours deciding which tablet to get. If the apple had been worth the extra money/better than the nexus i would have got that.
I have used an iPad 3 and 4 many times.
I agree with the below and dont want the ops thread being clogged up, just wanted to make the op aware that my opinion isnt coming from a "fanboy!"
Take it somewhere else guys. I answered the OP's question by showing him a video instead of just telling him to take my word for it; so there isn't anything else to say other than to confirm that boat browser works like I showed.
If others are having a different experience with Boat Browser I expect they'll say so, but other than that please lets not have an off-topic flame war here.

I hardly care what you have to say about taxing this taxing that. I was showing that there were no stutters, microstutters, and zoom stutters that is apparent in Chrome.
Is there a reason you're in this thread providing pointless information? I don't understand the reason you need to troll people looking for answers and those that are giving them answers. Go away, kid.
I haven't seen any lag on my Nexus 10 despite using Chrome. If you root your tablet you can even get the AOSP JB browser, which is even smoother.
Don't believe the guy claiming the screen is garbage. I've done a side by side comparison to my brother's iPad 3 and the Nexus 10 came out on top.

How is it not fair?
One of the main advantages of Android is that if you don't like the stock app you can get something else. The average user is capable of downloading a new browser. If it required rooting and tweeking then it wouldn't be a fair comparison I agree, but it doesn't.
I guess I shouldn't really feed the troll.
Browser stutter is my main complaint of the Nexus 10 (and the 16:10 aspect ratio). Some people don't notice it or aren't bothered by small stutters, I am. I've tried Boat, Dolphin, QQ, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc, etc. ALL of them have at least some stutter when viewing image intensive sites such as the verge, droid life, etc.
I have an iPad 3 and nexus 10 in front of me right now
The nexus chrome browser doesn't hold a candle to safari on the iPad in terms of smoothness
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
I love my Nexus 10 in every way and I'm using Boat, but I have to admit that if there's one thing the iPad beats it in it's browsing smoothness. The Nexus is pretty smooth but the iPad is considerably smoother.
I like my Nexus screen more than the Retina display though.
Chrome is not a speed champion but then it does so much more than Safari as far as integration with Google Docs, etc. If you want a dumb browser like Safari for the sake of speed then sideload the AOSP JB browser. Chrome is for productivity whereas AOSP JB and Safari browsers are for consumption.
The great thing about android and devices like the nexus are your free to do whatever you want. If you want to be locked into the ****ty iOS environment I generally don't recommend it, especially for something so trivial as web browsing. The nexus 10 hangs more than any other device out there with browsing. I have an iPad from work...and I hate it. All I can do is download lame apps and click icons to launch them. Bore!!
Was pretty disappointed with Chrome on my N10 due to the stuttering, lag, and unresponsiveness cited here. Firefox 17 has restored the joy for the time being until Chrome can catch up. :good:

Is the nexus 4 still worse than the optimus g?

Even with new kernels and software upgrades? They're at least supposed to be even but instead the nexus 4 lacks battery and processing power in nearly every test. Is this still the case and if so, why?
I've read that the battery in the Nexus 4 lasts longer and search a term called "thermal throttling"
BTW, benchmarks arent worth ****
if your talking about Quadrant .. it is NOT thermal throttling.. it doesn't throttle within 30 seconds, the only test my Nexus has throttled with was glbenchmark , and that was with everything ticked..
Tweaked kernels and hacks (like undervolting) adress some issues for sure ! Less heat/throttling and even some battery gain. But i'm pretty sure the Optimus G is still ahead in perfs AND battery, without even consider its own tweaked kernels. (-> I own a Nexus 4, but i have only tested the G with everything stock)
I guess the question is about the price you are ready to pay, and where you stand considering system updates or modified user experience. Besides that, the Optimus G just is a better device. Both are equally smooth in every day use though ...
lol if youre basing which phone is "better" off of quadrant scores, you need to reevaluate what youre looking for in a phone. High quadrant scores don't always translate to a smooth, fluid, enjoyable user experience. The nexus 4 is lightyears ahead of the optimus G in terms of user experience.
Guys, I know that benchmarks don't say too much about daily use. But still. Those two devices are almost EXACTLY the same. What part of the nexus 4 did google **** up so badly that the optimus g comes out ahead in almost everything?

I think you need to worry about your own phone SGS II
Optimus G has Android 4.04
Nexus 4 has Android 4.2.1
That is a much bigger deal then overaggressive thermal throttling which will be fixed eventually. Also as someone coming from the LG P999, I wouldn't want to depend on LG for any software updates again. It will get its planned update to 4.1.1 but after that I wouldn't count on anything.
I don't know what the OG is getting for battery but I've been getting over 5hrs screen on time lately which is pretty good.
I'm think LG is tampering with it's products - you would think that phones with supposedly similar hardware would perform accordingly. After all the N4 is running pure android and most folks would of given the edge to the N4. The truth is out there somewhere just saying

You know, every single stuff *put company name here* put out, they tweak the heck out of their stuff to have high benchmark score.
Heard that new Apple GPU is 4x faster than newest Android GPU, or newest Android CPU is twice as fast as newest Apple CPU? So now you know what I meant.
@ zephik & yyz
Accusing me of trollposting... How about you read every single ****ing test that is out there? All of them say that the optimus g is miles ahead of the nexus 4 hardwarewise.
@ Kyra of Fire
Apple's gotta be doing something right. Their stupid phone lasts twice as long as the nexus 4 even though it has a much higher display brightness and a smaller battery. Oh and before anybody comes up with "Blabla but nex4 has more cores, they need more energy." Yea right, I don't know how many cores you think your phone uses on webbrosing but it won't be more than 1 or maximum 2, so not more than the iphone's got.
http://www.autoomobile.com/news/lg-nexus-4-battery-life-tips/1009720/
I quote:
GSMArena put it to the test and found that when it came to talk time tests four of the 1.5GHz Krait core remained idle and the battery did well with 14:17 hours. However it was 1 hour short of the Optimus G, which the LG Nexus 4 is based on.
In regards to the web browsing test on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, this was the worst ever seen. The LG Nexus 4 therefore didn’t have to do too much to beat it. It went on for 4 hours and 34 minutes on just one charge. If you look at the larger picture however this is still a poor score when you consider that the iPhone 5 was two times as long.

To each their own... Played with an OG in person... it's nice... But not for me. I like being able to do with what I please to my phone. Hence I got the N4. As far as battery. I'm a heavy user and with my current setup I was able to steam using tunein for over 6hours during my work shift.. Kaokao all day... Full sync... Gnow enabled.... Not crippling my phone or turning off data syncs...left my 10hr work shift and was just under 40%...not bad in my book

The A6 does use a very beefy GPU. Apple has tended to do this for quite awhile now. The iPad 3rd generation and 4th generation are notably unmatched. This is not due to benchmark tweaks, they just source better chips for their products.

If you don't want Apple, then insert Nvidia, AT&T, T Mobile, Samsung, or WalMart, or US Department of Defense, or whatever.
Every of them have a nice chart showing how their stuff is better than someone else's stuff. Regardless of wether it is true, false or somewhere in between.

Galaxy S4 laggy?

I was watching some hands on videos of the S4 and was pretty disappointed to see that the interface is laggy in some areas and overall less than perfectly smooth. There's absolutely no excuse for it considering how powerful the hardware is, and shows that Samsung's priorities are all wrong (throwing in a hundred random new features but neglecting the basics of the user experience). But I've seen some comments saying those were just pre-production units. Is that just a fanboy excuse or can we really expect to see a major improvement in smoothness by launch? Is there lag on the Galaxy S3 for anyone who's owned one? UI lag is my biggest pet peeve, and that alone is making me consider the HTC One for the first time despite the S4 beating it in almost everything else.
I have noticed in some S3 vs HTC One videos, that the S3 took considerably longer time to show the homescreen when leaving an app by pressing the home button. In some videos I think I might have seen the same thing on the S4. Maybe it's TouchWiz, maybe it's just that the device is not final or so many other apps were open in the background.
Wait for reviews of final hardware.

Samsungs Launcher software was always a master on being laggy. Especially at the first releases. But after a few updates this lags flew out.
It will be the same on the S4.
Every hands on I've seen so far seems fine to me. If there is any 'lag' going to homescreen, it's because of Touchwiz waiting for that hold or double press for voice control. (Can't remember which it is.)

Exactly. Thank God there are still smart people around. Its because it is beta and not final software. Samsung phones are the most fluid phones out there besides the nexus line ( jelly bean era). The S3 had many Jelly bean leaks ( 10 or more) just 2 weeks before the final version was released. The first leak was very laggy, by the 3rd it was starting to be ok, by the 7th or 8th you could feel project butter. The S IV is shipping in a month so whatever lag there is, it will probably be gone.
Samsung's fanboys wont admit it , but the SGS2/3/Note1/2/10.1 lag out of the box.
Just walk in a Staples or a BB and try a Note 10.1. It is extremely laggy.
You need to disable all the crapwares/bloatwares if you want to feel this tablet runs like an iPad.
I never understood why Samsung let their demos(out of the box devices) be so unpleasant to use.
Some are saying Google cant live without Samsung but I say a Motorola Google X available with all the carriers would remove Samsung from the number one Android phones.
Samsung need to be bumped asap

Of course it's going to lag when you hit home. You have to deactivate S Voice double tap home launch. The SGS4 is going to wait a split second or 2 to see if you hit home again to launch S Voice. Deactivate that and it would have just went home.
I did notice a little bit of lag when the phones were being demoed, but quite honestly these are pre-release models. It could be as simple as the phone not killing its tasks after it opens up 7 or 10 apps. What if the person before opened up a few browsers, the camera, gallery, flipboard, a game, etc?
Again, I'll judge when the thing actually comes out or when GSM Arena gets a hold of a final production model.

The Jelly Bean update that samsung gave to the galaxy note 1 is probably the worst update I have seen. It is buggy, slow and laggy! Even after removing all the bloat taking it down to 236MB it is still laggy and slow. This is one of the reasons why I am not going to go with any sammy device, poor support and bad optimisation hardware-software wise

Yeah i'm not sure about the note1, i had early 2012 when it had ICS. But i had the S3 and note 2, both were fast and fluid with little to no lag at all, especially the note 2 thanks to the 2 gigs or Ram.
I play a lot Samsung and own some of it.
Samsung Lagging phone/tablet
- Note
- Tab 10.1 (This one is pure rubbish)
Samsung not so smooth interface
- S II ( franky said that only 4.1.2 france ROM with S III interface run quite well here.. hmm)
- S III International Edition (it actually quite nice now using XperianZe ROM, means latest touchwiz to blame not really capable for 1GB device)
- Note 10.1
Samsung with well acceptable interface smoothness, not smooth interface (some sort like cut frame) was keep to extreme minimal
- S III LTE edition
- Note II
- Nexus 10
Base on above, and current spec, I believe in final, S 4 will running smooth on it interface.

so whats the reason then for them to exist? if they make the phone laggy? asked no-one in samsung apperently...

Does the Galaxy Note 3 have S-lag standard?

As a big Samsung smartphone fan, I was hugely disappointed with the S4. Micro stutters and lag EVERYWHERE it drove me crazy.
I was really REALLY hoping the Note 3 with the S800 powerhouse will remedy the lag, according to the many videos so far of the device it seems crazy but I can still see some micro stuttering going on. WTF Samsung!?
My Note 2 was literally lag and micro stutter free, is it too much to ask for your "Next big thing" to perform the same?
I have my fingers crossed that the final software will give a smooth buttery user experience, if not I'm jumping ship for reals.. you know what they say, fool me twice......
I am hoping the 3GB of RAM help this and eventually root happens so we can remove the bloat :fingers-crossed:
Oyeah my S4 is smooth as butter but it is running custom rom
good
See no stutters and everyone Note 2 owner I speak to says the device performs excellent.
Are you speculating it will be slow? what is the point of this thread?
"do you think it will be slow?" - you wont know until you own the device for a few days if it will fit YOUR expectations.

It's a good question actually. The SGS4 lagged with its initial release s/w. From what I've heard its improved over time but still has some lag in certain areas. The SGS4 (and now the N3) have new sensors tied to new functionality that requires the phone to always be anticipating an action. Like someone said above, 3GB of RAM should help with the additional workload. That and Samsung's had some time to refine the s/w that was first launched in April. The SGS3 had issues that were fixed in the N2 so I'd expect/hope history repeats itself.

It was excellent, yes. It got even better when I loaded a debloated ROM on it. Only reason I didn't leave TW altogether was I needed wi-fi calling. AOSP was by far the smoothest ROM. Ideally for those of us who don't need or want S-bloat they'd release a non Spen Note 3 equivalent GP Edition.
Running Miui on the s4 completely removes the lag. Hoping the note3 will also get Miui like the note 2 did. Touchwiz will always lag imo.

That's why I went getting a Galaxy Note 1 in my hand now when waiting for my GN3.
In this kind of " training", I am sure that I will be very satisfied with the speed of GN3..........GN1 is just soooooooooooooooo lag. Freeze itself once or twice a day....
The stutter is still there when scrolling

The micro stutter is still there. For me, it's very annoying because the browser suffers from it (and I spend a lot of time in the browser). I've tried both Chrome and the ASAP browsers. The latter is slightly better, but it's still there and still very annoying. I understand it's subjective and does not bother everyone the same way, but for me it completely destroys the user experience.
Here's one way to see the stutter:
1. Open theverge.com in desktop mode.
2. Hover the s-pen at the bottom of the page (results in page slowly scrolling down).
3. Observe stutters (occurs intermittently, usually when scrolling sections in the page that contain images).
4. Do the same thing to scroll up once you've reached the bottom (I.e. hover the s-pen at the top of the page to scroll slowly upwards).
5. Observe the intermittent stutters.
Very bad user experience. Inexcusable considering the hardware. I for one am very disappointed.

You recommend him get an iPhone because?.. Oh that's right it doesn't lag even with buggy websites. Sammy needs to work out some kinks with their over bloated touchwiz nonsense. I was going to give the note 3 a go. Then I heard people complaining of lag similar to the s4 (which I returned because of lag) now I've decided against buying one. I wanted that big 1080p screen so bad but I just can't deal with constant stuttering and frame lag, it drives me nuts.
I myself will be sticking to my newly purchased Gold 5s and the Nexus 5 running stock KitKat when its released.

I know a lot of people say don't use theverge.com to test the device... but what I found strange is:
The iPhone does not have ANY problems with that website, 4, 4S or 5.
The Galaxy S3 both the dual core US snap version and quad core international exynos versions, My Nexus 4 and Note 2, do not have any problems with theverge.com desktop or any other website.
The real kicker is this, my HTC One had ZERO issues with theverge.com, either in the stock browser or chrome. It flies through that website like butter. The S4 which has the same but "better binned" AB S600 chipset grinds to a halt with that website and other graphic intense websites, even XDA desktop will bring the S4 to it's knees sometimes. To level the playing field, I installed chrome on both my S4 and HTC One, theverge.com desktop version flies on the HTC but grinds to a halt on the S4 using the same chipset and same browser. So what's going on here??!
My recently acquired LG G2 is running an s800 and is an absolute monster when it comes to web browsing. Probably the fastest and smoothest web browsing I've ever encountered. I'm really hopeful that the N3 will at least be on par with it when it comes to a simple task like web browsing. Crossing my fingers, from what I've read so far I'm not holding my breath.

Nexus 6 vs Nexus 5

I have owned all the Nexus devies and used them as daily drivers.
I truly believed in the Nexus 6 hype. I still like the device very much, I think it's the best design on any smartphone and it's difficult to use any other phone after using Nexus 6.
General usage
Now hear me out. Nexus 5, what a truly amazing performer this thing is. It really flies out with any task you put on it. Hard to believe that it's snapdragon 800, use xperia z ultra and see how painful that thing is.
I think on 5.1.1, Nexus 5 is a clear winner in terms of speed except the camera where Nexus 6 is pretty quick.
Nexus 6 has improved on 5.1.1 but still it has a long way to go to catch up to the Nexus 5.
Gaming
Forget benchmarks. Gaming performance on Nexus 5 is way way better than Nexus 6. Partly because Nexus 6 lags during many games and partly because Nexus 5 still is one of the best gming performers.
Asphalt 8, nova 3 , Modern combat 5, dead trigger 1 and 2, riptide to 2 all run significantly better on Nexus 5, dead trigger 2 runs less smooth on low graphics settings on Nexus 6 and actually smoother with high graphics, strange.
Keyboard
It's a very very important aspect for me for enjoying my experience with any smartphone.
In terms of touch accuracy , screen responsiveness and keyboard fluidity, Nexus 5 wins just narrowly, not to say the Nexus 6's keyboard is jerky. It's great too.
Browser Performance
Again, Nexus 5 wins in terms of speed of opening the sites, atleast for me on the same network. Also in terms of smoothness when the page is loading, but once the page is completely loaded, Nexus 6 is smooth as butter when your scroll through the page.
Xda site runs better on my nexus 6 too.
Screen
Nexus 6, that sheer size with amoled is lovely to use. Nexus 5 has a great screen too, and it think it looks as sharp as a nexus 6 screen when I take pictures of both with macro focus, probably due to pentile arrangement on nexus 6. Still you won't be able to see it with a naked eye. I also love a curved bezels on my nexus 6 compared to the flat bezels on nexus 5.
Amoled on n6 isn't oversaturated too which is surpising, it's punchy but not oversaturated.
N5 has a somewhat undersaturated colors even for an IPS but still the screen is lovely because black levels are decent and white point is good (not as good as n4).
Sound
Not an expert on sound, don't listen to music but sterio speakers with that loudness surely tilts it in n6's favor.
Overall in terms of performance,Nexus 5 wins pretty easily for me.
Share your thoughts.
Too bad my Nexus 5 was stolen a year ago, would love to see the comparison myself.

It's discussed in private military forums, but SealTeam6 did not kill Bin Laden. It was an iPhone with the Steve Jobs app that ninja'd the terror leader.
iPhone>N6:highfive:>N5>everything else.
For the price point and specs, the Nexus 5 was the best phone ever. The Nexus 6 was a huge failure, they're slashing prices everywhere now to dump them and the next iteration of the Nexus 5 2015 will be a smashing success. Google knows they messed up on the 6, no matter if people want to admit it or not.
Just for clarification. How did Google mess up on the n6. Price maybe but its a premium phone

They went against the ethos of what the Nexus is. Premium spec niche phone for half the price of the flagships. Sales have not been good, and many Nexus faithful would spend the 700 dollars on the 6. Lets just wait and see what direction they go with the 2015 version. If they go back to the Nexus 4/5 model of spec/pricing, I think we can all agree that Google will have admitted they messed up on the 6.
Yeah we'll see [emoji6]
