just recently a guy posted about the *#*#4636#*#* code and changing network preference. well fooling around at work yesterday i tried it out and i picked "WCDMA only" and before this, i get prettu good 3g and H signals but very few edge spots (inside). after i selected that though my signal was still on H speeds so i didnt think much of it but its been 15 hours and ive been around and my phone hasnt even as much as dropped down to 3g. so maybe or maybe not this could help you guys out but i just wanted to give a heads up. try out for yourself
p.s. i also heard it helps with battery because your phone isnt always busy switching back and forth between network.
"H" is what is displayed when you have a 3G signal.

Well, according to T-Mobile's G2 Guide:
H = Connected to the fastest 3G networks (UMTS or HSDPA)
E = Connected to the second-fastest network (EDGE)
G = Connected to a 2G network (GPRS)
You will see an "H" while you are using 3G. This means the "H" is shared for UMTS or HSPA as well ("4G"). I don't agree that this is how it should be noted, but that is how it is noted on the G2 without any 3rd party widgets installed.
H and G only in West Texas
Out here we are still stuck on a 3G network. (No idea when HSDPA or + will be here), but NO EDGE, unless you roam... It is 3G/H or GPRS... It kinds sucks, thank goodness for WIFI..

Sorry you are wrong. H = 3G or 4G (HSPA or HSPA+)
I have that widget too, but the OP never said that widget is what he was looking at. Presumably, he was looking at the stock notification on the phone, showing "H". My point is that he would see "H" while on 3G or 4G, so he'd only be able to tell the difference by speed tests or some other measurement (such as a 3rd party widget).
I wanna get more replies and see from more people, the problem with me is, at school in campus the signal is really spotty, where I can even have 3 or 4 bars and be still on edge.
Another thing is where when the signal goes haywire, it will drop from either utms or hspa into edge and the data connection will just stop and it won't work unless I get the H. Its been happening for a week now and I'm up to a week on my remorse period and want to handle this before its too late.

I think that they were saying for the OP to download that widget so that they will know when they are on HSPA+ or 3g. I'm pretty sure they didn't think the OP was already using the widget or they wouldn't have suggested downloading it.
Does anyone know if the G2 displays hspa+ in the phone signal? I only see UMTS or HSDPA and I live in Dallas which supposedly was one of the first cities to get HSPA+.
I've searched around but I have never found any concrete evidence regarding the issue. Fastest speed I've seen is about 6 Mbps, which I think is just standard 3G.

I went to Dallas last weekend, and mine showed HSPDA on status... So, I'm not sure... I was getting pretty rock solid download and upload speeds, roughly around 8 Mbps download...
When it says HSPDA it is on HSPA+, UMTS is 3G. Only reason I know this is because I live in Chicago and we just got it, so ever since, it has said HSPDA. Before, it only ever read UMTS.

Is that so? My mistake then.
My phone almost never stays on G and if nothing else, is only on H and fluctuates to edge in some of the weaker signal areas.
G = gprs
e = edge
h = umts/hsdpa/hspa+, (3g/"4g")

Do you know of a way to force the phone to display 3G when appropriate? I think having the phone display "H" at all times is fairly misleading.

That does seem pretty rubbish, if it shows "H" even on when you're on plain 3G speeds.
Just so everyone knows. This discussion is not about the H in the status bar. We already know it displays H for all high speed connection types.
It is about the network type displayed in the staus and how to determine if you ade on HSPA+.

The only other option you have is to grab the "Mobile Signal Widget" from the Android Market. That will accurately tell you your signal strength and what connection signal you're surfing. I.E it'll show 3G if you're on 3G and H if you're on HSPA+.

I'm in UK on O2 network. I know I have good HSDPA coverage, there's nothing wrong with signal, network or the simcard as I have 5 other smartphones available to me which I've tried the simcard in.
Basically the problem is it only shows as 3G & not H in the notification bar. Does that mean the Nexus S is not HSDPA compatible even though the spec sheet say it is or is it a bug or something.
It will show 3G when on HSPA. It's how Google designed it.
I noticed the same 'issue' Samsung Galaxy S and HTC phones all say H for HSDPA speed conections. I got most confused with my nexus S. I'm also on O2 in the UK.
In any case OP goto settings>about phone>status and look at Mobile Network Type it will say HSDPA.
Personally I'd like google to fix this as 3G data rate is slower!

I've entered this as a feature request on Google's Android Code site: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=13561
Please star it to help get it attention.
(Please avoid "me too" or "fix this" type comments that don't add additional information to further describe the request or bug, as these comments are then emailed to everyone who has starred the issue and some consider it as bad as spam. I've un-starred comments myself because of all the pointless emails.)

^ What he said. Also not all HTC phones display "H." The only ones that I'm aware of that do it out of the box are the MT4G and G2 due to changes in Android by T-Mobile.
You might be thinking about the custom ROMs where developers usually will add the ability to the notification bar framework for it to display 3G or H depending on what you're currently connected to (UTMS vs HSDPA). You're usually only on UTMS if you have a weak signal, or if you're idling(as in the phone isn't currently pulling down/sending up information). Once you start doing something, it'll automatically flip over to HSDPA.
I do miss the H i had on my N1 with CM6
hopefully CM7 hits beta soon
HSPA is still 3g...its not lying to you lol. You just won't know when you have acess to FASTER 3g lol

You can actually enable it yourself if you decompile framework-res.apk, modify it (res/value/books.xml), recompile and replace the stock one.
When I am in a 3g only area and I see other people with t mobile connected to 3g but my nexus 4 can't connect to 3g only 2g(E). My home will only show a (H) and a (E) but never a 3G! is there a reason why?

Depending on your carrier, if tmobile then usually H and 3g usually are one in the same because H technically is 3g uhh 3g(+).

H is 3g, you are right.
here in the nyc area, i almost always see an H(rom enabled H+ when on a H+ network), at certain places i see an E. every once in a few months, i see a 3G and a G.
Go to dialer, then type in *#*#4636#*#* then choose phone info, then scroll down and you might see a little rectangle with "WCDMA Preferred", choose that and change it to WCDMA Only if you want to only have 3g/H signal. But note that if you're in an area with no 3g signal then you wouldn't have any signal on your phone, you'd have to choose GSM Only (only 2g networks such as edge or gprs, saves more battery) or back to WCDMA Preferred.

Seems it's a "bug" or whatever you want to call it in the Nexus 4 radio and even the old SGS2 (international) had this with newer ICS/JB radios.
I'm on AT&T and I noticed after some point when the radios would come out for that phone it would no longer show 3G when idle and H or H+ when active, it was "idle" on H all the time. Without moving my location i can restart my phone (talking about the SGS2 here) and flash between new and old radios and it would either be on 3G all the time when idle or H. Don't think there was a battery loss as a result but still it's a bug or towers need to be updated or something.
The Nexus 4 came with newer radios obviously and from day 1 it would sit on H all the time. Some other people in other parts of the country show it dropping down to 3G when needed but not here in the NYC area.
3G is not the same as H but i guess without being technical you can say it is .
3G = UMTS
H = HSPA (and up to 14,4Mbps)
H+ = HSPA+ (HSPAP)
I was thinking AT&T disabled UMTS around here but as I said, my SGS2 with an older radio will still show 3G (both running same ROM).
I haven't tried a T-Mobile SIM but seems to be the same anyways.

Oh good luck on that, they are only acknowledging the LTE problem on a 1 to 1 basis right now to avoid the backlash. Even then they give you the run around unless you stand firm and demand a solution.
None of these corporations believe in keeping customers happy anymore or that the customer is always right. Even if it is a $700 phone which is nothing to them they would still rather squabble and try to get out of it.

That's because the signal bar isn't showing your LTE signal strength, it's showing your CDMA (voice/text/3g) signal. Even then, the bars are arbitrary and don't correlate to a defined signal strength. It varies between device model and carrier wildly.
Attached are 2 screen shots I just took: one from my Note 4 at -103dBm and 1 bar, and one from my Note 3 at -108dBm and 3 bars. What this means is my Note 4 has a stronger signal than my Note 3, however the Note 3 shows more bars. There's no standard for signal strength and bar count. They can align it any way they want. The way to get an accurate read is from the "About Phone -> Status" menu, and even then it only shows the CDMA strength.
And, the final screenshot is a speed test I just did on LTE. My LTE signal is -95dBm where I am, so actually STRONGER than my voice connection. (Checked via debug menu)
I really wish there was some standard on this, and how carriers were required to show signal strength. Unfortunately there's not. Just remember: the bars lie.

Stop giving wrong information. The bars are your lte signal.. Your note 3 is connected to band 25, as for your note 4 it's hard to say as it has two additional bands it connects to and only way to tell is to go into ##DEBUG# and look in the lte section. You want to see voice bars? Place a call and it'll switch to 1x and then show voice signal on the bars.
Ppl keep forgetting these spark phones use two more bands than the older lte devices. Most are probably connected to band 41 and that's why they get 1 bar in buildings but still getting good speeds. It is a higher frequency band..
Sent from my SM-N915P using XDA Free mobile app
First photo at home connected to band 41 on my Edge. Second photo my Note 2 right next to my Edge on band 25 almost maxed out. Third pic Edge on a call and signal drops to show 1x and it's maxed out. Older lte devices showed active lte data bars at all times because it didn't lose 4g to make calls so even on calls you'd see lte bars. However triband devices drop lte altogether to place calls on 1x unlike my Note 2 that can use 1x while also being connected to lte.. Hope that clarifies a lot.

If you read the second part of my post, you'll see I had listed my LTE strength as well, which I had gotten from the debug menu.
As for bands, where I live we don't have Spark yet. Only band 25, which I saw via the LTE Engineering screen in debugging. The same screen that shows my LTE signal stronger than my 1x connection.
And, at the end of it, it doesn't change the fact the signal strength and bar count don't matter.
And the reason I'd posted that in the first place was because people posting about only having 1 bar of LTE, and was clearing up a common misconception.
