[Q] USB OTG 8Gb & 16Gb - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I've searched and cannot find anything,
I have recently become the owner of the LG G2 (Great machine) And I purchased an external USB OTG device that allows
me to plug in external USB drives.
The 8Gb that came with it works fine (Small thumb-drive style)
The 16Gb (same small style, Kingston DT Micro).
The 16Gb Kingston reads fine in PC but does nothing in the OTG.
Both are formatted to FAT32....
Have I done something stupid or missed something obvious.
any help would be most appreciated.
Regards,
JW

I have the 16GB type exactly this one, works fine. No problems whatsoever. Well its incredibly slow in this age... I like my meenova with 32GB SD better .
Either you have done something wrong in the FS. Try again to format it to FAT32 then. Not sure what stock supports, try also exFAT or NTFS. Also try to jiggle it? More times inside outside, inside outside.
Or the drive is bugged. Does it work normally everywhere? Try to copy data on it.
EDIT: Also remembered I do have 2 OTG cables, and with one of those, the drive needed some persuasion.

Thanks Pagot.
The 16Gb USB works in everything *except* the G2.
Other 16Gb larger usb drives work in the G2.
So I have no idea!!!!
I've formatted the original 16Gb card to everything and it's mum and nothing. Oh well - I'll just get another one as I'm out of ideas.
Thanks for your help

Why can I not read high capacity thumb drives on my Athena?

Hi Guys,
I'm posting in the general forum to get a wider audience. I have a x_7510 (Athena 400). I am running xTep's 1.01 ROM.
I have 4GB, 8GB & 16 GB Scandisk Cruser USB Thumb drives. The 4GB is read just fine either via the docking station or the 4 in 1 cable, showing up under File Explorer as "Hard Disk", however, the 8 & 16 GB do not. My notebook reports that the Thumb Drives are formatted FAT32.
On 8/01/08 LTxda reported being able to read a Corsair Voyager Brand 16 GB using the 4-in-1 cable on his 7500 no problem - see post #23 at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=357502&highlight=External+Drive&page=3.
Anyone have any ideas on why I'm not able to read the larger capacity drives?
Hi there !
Some brands of thumb drive are not readable no matter what format it is in . You have to buy another brand and make sure you bring along your x7510 fully charged and also the 4 in 1 cable to test before you buy . the same goes to buying keyboard , wired or wireless or bluetooth mouse , trackballs mouse , external hdd and etc... any external / usb device you may think of , bring out x7510 & cable , test first before you buy - it's definitely safer bro . Or maybe fully reformat again your thumb drive once or twice and see what happens , but please copy all your data to your laptop first - ok ? Also plug in the cable and thumb drive and soft reset your x7510 and see what happens . Best of luck to you - jimmunsw
Tested 16GB Kingston Datatraveller and 8GB Sandisk Cruzer with 4in1 cable on a Dopod U1000 (x7501) - both work fine.
I would seriously not consider "formating" your thumb drive unless you really know what you are doing. Unlike flash cards, flash drives can't be formated with the usual software tools e.g. those available through XP or Vista. I learned that the hard way.
As to your problem, I have no idea what is going on - Windows Mobile should not have a problem reading FAT32 volumes. I do recall however that Sandisk Cruzers come with U3, is that enabled or disabled on yours?
Thanks for the input. I have disabled the U3 application, and I have reformatted the 8 & 16 GB drives, but with no success (although the both seem fine after the formatting). I'm wondering if there is something in the Athena 400 set-up that is different from the Athena 100 o/s that could be contributing to this?

Dear hishamh ,
Have u tried 32gb or 64gb thumbdrive with 4 in 1 cable ?
If yes , what brand please ?
How is the transfer speed ?
Any comment on these big storage thumbdrives ?
Thanks & regards - jimmunsw
I'll let you know - my wife has a 32GB drive, but I'm not in a position to test it right now.
Kingston Datatraveller 150: 32GB
Works fine. I didn't test transfer speeds, but in general you shouldn't expect more than USB1.1 at best. I did play a 700kBps Divx movie off of it - benchmarks with CorePlayer say about 80%+, which is more or less what I expected.
32gb kingston datatravellers 150 thumbdrives
Dear Hishamh ,
Thanks for your kind reply , it is good news to hear that 32gb thumbdrive can be used for our 4in 1 cable , do u have any idea our device can use a microsd with minisd adapter for 32 gb microsd card ? I have checked at low yat , it is still not out yet but in 2 to 3 months time , it maybe out for sale then , and another question is that the 16gb microsd card can be used right ? - Will the usages sapps the battery power - i wonder ? Please enlighten us - thanks for sharing and best regards to u bro ... jimmunsw
Maybe you can try format the TF card with Fat,not Fat32
Ameo 4in1
I don´t understand that the´re people not using ,as I discribed a few times, a HDD 1,8 inch f.e. I´m using a trekstor HDD 120GB. With that combination 4in1 cable I am able to read files with about 15000 KB/s.
Writing is slow 300 KB/s.
It works perfect since a few months.

Compatible USB Devices

This is just a thread where you can post anything that works when you plug it into the usb slot on the acer iconia inluding: keyboards, usb hard drives, mices, 3g usb sticks, external hard drives, anything else you can think of just post it
Wireless Xbox 360 controller via PC dongle
Logitech Wingman Gamepad - 2 recognized when using self-powered hub, but D-pad codes were the same for both (ie, 2-player not possible)

What rom were you using?
microsoft wireless mobile mouse 3500
Model: 1427
hitachi 2.0 tb hard drive xl2000
an hp keyboard usb cord dont know the model
Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000
logitech k350 great keyboard, wireless with small reciever, hooks up right away, bought for 36 bucks off ebay and cheaper than bluetooth keyboard with better value, really comfortable also
I'm using Lightspeed with 3g. External HDD works and my Kingston 1GB flash drive.
I have Logitech MK220,
it's a wireless mouse / keyboard combo with one receiver ( unfortunately a lil big, not the micro ones, but not that bad) and it works perfectly on Iconia with both keyboard and mouse. It's a great keyboard and very compact.
Nova slider X600 working good
Samsung 2.5" portable hard drive
Sandisk 8GB Cursor contour (although it seems to bugger up a lot)
Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse combo (can't remember the model number)
Asus EK-C2 eee top wireless keyboard and mouse
Wiimote! (Have to use an app in the market for it)
I find that portable hard drives seem to work better than USB flash drives. Does anyone else feel the same way?
isnt a flash drive kind of a portable hard drive?
How about card readers? I need to copy JPG files from a card reader to the tablet so that I can send them via wi-fi. Any particular brand of cardreader?
Kingston USB memory FAT 32. Using File Manager makes it easy for me.
The PNY 8gb mini net book USBs are working for me. Great little things, as they hardly stick out from the slot, and I can store all sorts of backup stuff on there.

Yes! I have a really cheap Digital Concepts reader that I picked up a couple of years ago on the road. The tablet sees the CF card as a USB Storage Device.
I've used a 1tb WD Passport drive formatted to fat32 on mine.

Seagate 1.5tb
I have used Seagate 1.5 TB portable hard drive formatted ntfs. I'm on stock 3.2.

S4 + Micro SD help

hey gang, was wondering about getting some advice on what to do about my sd card...
i bought a sandisk micro sd with its adapter and figured id stock it up for when my s4 shows up... the thing is, it wouldnt mount to my macbook pro, mounted just fine to the macbook air, so i stocked it via file sharing...
but down the road? not really the way i would like to do it, the sd reader works fine on the pro, works with other sd cards...
my question is... in the best opinions, do you all think i should run to best buy, try out a different brand like PNY micro sd and adapter? or another sandisk and see if maybe its just this particular adapter...??
if they dont work, i can atleast return it then just buy the external reader... etc etc
thanks

It's probably the adapter, I've never had an issue with mine. another option is to get a usb adapter which is just what i use now

Reason I speculate adapter is because it works on one but not other.

you're right, it could just as easily be the port on your mac too, so it would still be cheaper to initially try another adapter
Apple store put another sd card, worked just fine... Bought another sandisk and a pny micro. Will test it out later. Hopefully one works.
just plugged in the new Sandisk 32gb micro sd, same exact copy, just a new one... mounted perfectly! that was easy...

500gb passport HDD not recognized in MOJO

I bought a 500gb WD My Passport drive recently, and it works fine in Windows, but I cannot get it to show up in MOJO. It was NTFS, so I tried changing to FAT32, and it's still not showing up, despite my 32gb Micro SD card being FAT32 and showing up in MOJO. I played around with a few programs that were supposed to mount the HDD, but I still didn't see it under storage, and couldn't find it in ES File Manager. If it helps, I have been plugging it into one of the front USB ports. I figured maybe it needs to be in the back, but it works fine in the front with Windows. Is there a mode that works better with MOJO than FAT32?
Edit: The only thing I need it for is to hold my roms for use with my emulators. And maybe some music videos
Based on my experience, the HDD only work in the 3.0 USB slot.
Thanks, that did the trick. Now I can use my 32gb Micro SD for my Android handheld I bought recently while I use the 500gb hard drive for my MOJO

USB not detecting properly on 2nd gen shield tv.

So I have inserted the 3.0 usb mini drive and get message usb is running slow should try 3.0 or drive needs to be formatted. I format the drive and it fails then everything gets messed up at that point. es file explorer sees it but says can not open file. In the geforce forums many people are having the same issue. I plug in a usb 2.0 thumb drive and it detects and es file explorer sees it fine. Me thinks an update is needed. Any ideas?
thx
What type are you using?
I have a 128gb sandisk usb stick as adopoted storage in slot 1, in slot 2 I now have usb 3 Verbatim 1gb external drive.
Tried several others as I tweaked my setup and all worked (sandisk, verbatim , samsung)
Having the same problem. I've tried two different USB sticks. Both 128gb up to 400mbps read and 270mbps write. Shield claims both are too slow and fails to format either. Once it fails, the sticks are rendered useless and even after formatting, the shield will not mount either stick.. Nvidia support was not helpful at all. They're going to email me back when they find a solution.
Are they all USB 3? I read it doesn't support less than this so in case you have USB 2 sticks this may be the issue.
If they are USB 3 then I am not sure.
USB 2.0 drive work fine. I have already tested a couple. I got a 64GB 3.0 SanDisk to work. I did not bother formatting when aked. It came formatted in Fat 32.
I have used both USB 2 and 3; most USB 2.0 flash drives has given me a slow warning error, but the USB 3.0 one rocked and adopted just fine.
Same issue here. Just got my 2017, plugged in a sandisk fit 128, and it doesn't detect it. Plugged in some crappy 8gb lexar drive I had and it detects it. Tried formatting the sandisk multiple times, ntfs and exfat and still nothing.
That's very strange, I have the same as you and it worked in both usb slots on the Shield when I was testing what I would like my setup to be before eventually using it as adopted storage in slot 1.
How are you guys formatting your drives, maybe this is the issue? Having said that my 1tb HD in 2nd USB slot is NTFS.
I tried both exFat and NTFS.
Here's what i tried.
Sandisk Ultra Fit 128 USB 3.0 (both NTFS & exFat) - didn't recognize under either format
Lexar 8GB crappy old drive USB 2.0 (FAT32) - recognized
PNY 64GB (not sure of model) USB 2.0 (both NTFS & exFAT) - Didn't recognize as exFAT, but did recognize it as NTFS
Seagate 250GB 2.5" portable drive USB 2.0 (NTFS) - recognized
I've ordered the samsung bar drive (plastic) 128GB to try that now. I can't use the USB 2.0 drives, it's noticeably slower.
Same issue here with 2nd gen shield TV and USB 3.0 Samsung FIT 128 GB USB drive.
After formatting the drive as extended storage it is showing "Samsung drive is ejected" message.
tried formatting using Fat32, NTFS and exFat with no success, also changed the the drive policy to optimize performance then formatted, no success either.
This is becoming a frustrating issue.
Any solution please?
There is an update in the works that corrects most of these issues with USB drives. If you check this thread https://forums.geforce.com/default/...the-next-shield-experience-software-upgrade-/ then you will figure out what I am reffering too.
Bump? I just gave up on my Samsung Bar 128GB (USB 3.0) drive. It seems to work in other devices without any issues. It would occasionally be detected after while in USB port 2, but the format never succeeded. I tried formatting it myself using exFAT and NTFS, and then tried deleting all partitions and still had no luck. Stuck a SanDisk 32GB drive in there and it worked right away for adopted storage.
I just got my Nvidia shield tv 2017 16gb and discovered that the usb port closest to the ethernet port does not recognize usb flash drives. First I tried to use a 128gb sandisk flash drive on that port and it took forever to format so I canceled the process. Then tried over the other port and it took seconds to finish.
I think the problem is related to the OP has there been any breakthrough?
In actuality the port works for connecting a dongle for a keyboard or mouse, but flash drives are a no go. Additionally, the drives connected to that port get blazing hot.
Plug in your hard drive then unplug the Nvidia system plug it back and let it power on

I ended up purchasing a 2TB Western Digital My Passport external drive and it worked right away and haven't had an issue with it since. It's been great, but unfortunately, the original issue was never fixed as far as I know. I've taken a couple updates since, but haven't tried any other sticks since the WD Drive is working so well. If you're on the latest update and still having an issue, then I recommend an external drive.

Thank you for the info.
How did you setup the heater all drive?
How did you managed to install all apps and games and not filling up the Internal 16GB memory?
Thanks
