USB Hard Drive connection

Has anyonebeen able to connect successfully an hard drive to TP?
I've tried by all manners without success,even with the docking ... no luck.
Would thisbe possible if we root TP?

for your usb drive to be mounted by the thinkpad, it has to be formatted in fat32. not fat or ntfs.
Ive got 2 hard drives (1terabyte and 500GB) with loads of data on them and are both formatted ntfs. I connected them to my thinkpad, they powered up but did not mount. I wasn't ready to reformat my hard drives with data on them so i didn't try.
However, I think I've got a 2GB usb stick lying around somewhere . I'll format it to fat32 and post some feedback here later.
oh and before trying, go to settings-->storage and enable usb storage devices. otherwise no device would mount on the tablet. even when formatted properly

as darkhandsome18 mentioned, yes but the harddrive has to be formatted in Fat32. Windows XP, Vista, and 7 don't allow you to format harddrives over 32GB within windows. However, you can use a thirdparty utility to format drives that are over 32GB in size to Fat32.
i personally use Fat32formatter (its commandline based) to do this w/my drives.

i did verify that my 1TB external usb harddrive did mount on the TPT, i have not tried to run any videos or music from it though.

i have tried 4 ext HDD (ntfs and fat32), and all of them is not working.... (except for draining my battery for powering the HDD.. )
but for usb flash drive, that is a different matter, is it easily recognized by my TPT..
there is 1 unique problem that occurred to me, while trying to copy files from/into my TPT, there's a notification that file copy is successful, but when i check the file, it's size is 0 bytes..
this has happened to me 3-4 times, unfortunately, i dont know where's the "glitch" is coming from, as i can't replicate the problem anymore (i haven't got any update at all)

Normally when I use playback from hdd I use my supercharger power which connects throught the docking port or else the TPT just gets sucked dry of power as the hdd draws almost 500mA's.

If your external drive is formatted at fat32 and has its own power source, you will have success using it with the TPT. But if you are depending on the tablet's USB port to supply enough power to spin the disks in the external hard drive, you will get varying results, depending on the power requirements for your external drive. USB flash drives work fine because they have no moving parts and a low power requirement. As zeb crs stated, you see a huge power drain on your tablet when trying to use an external hard drive without its own power source.

1. What format does the drive need to be to be read by the MOJO?
At the time of this writing: Hard drives need to be NTSC. They are mounted as READ ONLY, so you will not be able to save files. Bummer.
2. Same question, except for a 64GB MicroSDXC format...?
At the time of this writing: microSD must be formatted as FAT32 with 32K cluster size. They need to be set as a PRIMARY drive rather than LOGICAL.

1. NTFS or FAT32 usb 2.0 HDs work. I've tried USB 3.0 HDs and so far those haven't worked
2. I havn't tested a 64gig micro sd but most Android devices only recognize up to 32GB sd cards.

I've got a 64GB in my A700 and it works fine as FAT32. The CM ROMS have issue with it, however. Also, according to the MadCatz website: "For those of you who need more, there’s a microSD flash slot to accommodate SDXC cards up to 128GB!"

I'm using a 64gb micro sd, format FAT. Works great.

Try exFat. It's the "standard" format for SDXC type cards and unlike Fat32 you're not limited to files less than 4 gigs in size. It's the format i use on my Galaxy Note 10.1 (last year's model). It should come in exFat anyway.
Or the simplest solution would be to rip open the packaging, stick it in the MOJO and if it tells you it needs to be formatted format it. That way it's in whatever format the MOJO prefers and your pc/laptop in all likelihood will recognise the format.
Also I'm guessing you're just going to leave it in there most of the time. To avoid card readers and sync cables I normally use FTPServer on my phone and tablet and the filezilla client on the pc, and to transfer stuff to the network drive I use the android ftp client andftp (there are file explorers like ES Explorer which can handle samba connections and FTP connections but I find they're a bit slower).
Avoid NTFS on flash media. From what I've been told it uses too many read/writes which isbad for flash media due to their limited write cycles.

Yeah, I didn't even think about formatting until after I had loaded my card down with movies and music and games....exFat = Nope.

No ExFat support? Wow. Mad Catz put NO effort into the software of this device, did they. Just using the stock OS without bothering to add in bluetooth 4.0 support and just throwing in a dongle to compensate (various phone providers, i.e. HTC have a history of providing a better than stock bluetooth stack), no camera support, no exFat support (this just makes them cheapskates since they just needed to license it crom Microsoft like the phone makers that provide it on their phones and tablets).
I still have time to decide. I was planning on buying it on amazon, sending it to a friend and then having them bring it when they visited in order to avoid the overpriced shipping and import fees but I'm starting to think I'd be better off with a cheap quadcore A15 device with an SoC like the A80 from allwinner and a Moga controller. It would be cheaper, have better play store support and be more versatile from what I'm reading on here...
Considering how little effort they've put into the software I wouldn't be surprised if they never got around to the KitKat upgrade. Companies who put more effort into the OS often fail whdn it comes to promised upgrades. And if Mad Catz never upgrades the OS it means users are limited to just ONE USB port which seriously cuts dow on usability.

yes beacause if there's no update to kitkat the BT smart dongle is in one already and will have to stay there.
I think it will come out, they have said it would a few times now. so just a matter of when.
yip I tested mine, no exFat support... a bit of a shame

Buy an USB Hub.
You can use hdd with ntfs should be much better then exfat.

At this time- the controller requires a dongle which takes up one of the usb slots.
You are left with the micro SD slot and the usb 3.0 slot.
When the Kitkat update arrives, you will be able to remove the dongle and have the usb 2.0 slot available.
The usb's will probably be obsolete soon anyway- seeing as PC streaming is coming in the kitkat update.
The point of mojo is to do everything via bluetooth and wifi.
That's the beauty of the machine.

Why use a usb to transfer data when you can pull data/stream data from your pc?

First of all, the point is that you're not getting the functionality promised. You are told that it's a micro-console with TWO usb ports and you can either give up the controller, or give up a usb port. Secondly a usb hub can be an okay solution but you then have to worry about getting a normal one or a powered one and how much it will affect throughput splitting it up depending on what devices you have attached. And as is others here have reported problems in using both USB drives simultaneously (and that some drives work better in one than the other).
Yes, streaming is good, you can actually use it right now if you´re just talking about transferring files, but if you're told you'll get two USB ports you should GET two functional and available usb ports.
KitKat upgrade. They've mentioned it, but don't think there's actually an official announcement. Plus they could have had that functionality there since the beginning. Smartphone and tablet makers add/take away functionality from Android and its Kernel. Heck, people HERE do it all the time. So why can't Mad Catz. And how long exactly do people have to wait for the upgrade? As the saying goes, buy a device for what it can do today, not what it can do tomorrow. Manufacturers often don't come through on promised upgrades.
Also to say that you/they support SDXC without a disclaimer saying that you can't use exFat is fraudulent as exFat is STANDARD on SDXC. If they made all this clear from the beginning it wouldn't be so bad but they don't and as such mislead their (potential) clients. Who cares about friendly and speedy support if they can't actually solve the issues present?

I would use the USB to hold a thumb drive full of data like the ISOs I've ripped from my GameCube and PSX for emulation. (Trying to get my wife to give up the Wii to our son when the Android port of Dolphin reaches maturity).

Formatted my card as FAT32, loaded it down, NO LUCK.
Tried the card in two computers and it shows up as FAT32 with all files intact. I'm on my A700 right now, popped it in, and it is working just fine.
There really needs to be a reboot option on the MOJO...Yes, I rebooted..no luck. Causes FC from settings when I try to see my storage.
Thoughts?

When you put the USB in, do you see it say, preparing USB in the top left?
You then have to go to your mojo settings, storage, and 'mount USB'.
It will. Then show up.
To unmount, go to settings, storage, unmount.

When it was formatted as exFAT, I could at least get to the storage options...just wouldn't mount.

I'm trying an extHD to connect.
First try 1 partition 1TB NTFS - recognized and mounted without problems on USB 3.0 port. (but NTFS don't work on my LG G2)
2nd try 4 partitions 1,2,3,4, extFat 256GB recognized, but can't mount. (but works fine on LG G2)
3rd try 4 partitions 1 NTFS, 2,3 extFat and 4 NTFS - don't work
4rd try 1 partition 1TB extFat - can't mount.
So, I let this thing NTFS formatted now. :silly:
If the M.O.J.O could be rooted, we could use tools to mount ALL formats and ALL partitions.
Solution for my rooted LG G2 was simple. " Paragon NTFS & HFS+ " is a free tool in Play Store.
NTFS is r/w now on my smartphone and r/o on the Mojo.

Connecting to drives larger than 32GB

Not sure if this is the right place to list this, but....
I found a tool that formats any drive larger than 32gb to fat32.
With it I formatted a 1TB hdd in an external, self powered enclosure and connected it to the tablet.
Holy crap it worked like a charm

Yeah. I was pleased to see the USB 3.0 hard drive charger cable port.

Nice find......that really opens up the possibilities.....with a hard drive that stores the stuff on my mac....I can actually use the pro as my main device. I have a 500GB laying on the shelf to play with.

You can do this from diskpart too (built in Windows tool). Use the FS=FAT32 option.

I seem to remember some of the later Samsung devices have exFAT support. It does not have the max 4GB size per file limitation associated with FAT32.

500gb passport HDD not recognized in MOJO

I bought a 500gb WD My Passport drive recently, and it works fine in Windows, but I cannot get it to show up in MOJO. It was NTFS, so I tried changing to FAT32, and it's still not showing up, despite my 32gb Micro SD card being FAT32 and showing up in MOJO. I played around with a few programs that were supposed to mount the HDD, but I still didn't see it under storage, and couldn't find it in ES File Manager. If it helps, I have been plugging it into one of the front USB ports. I figured maybe it needs to be in the back, but it works fine in the front with Windows. Is there a mode that works better with MOJO than FAT32?
Edit: The only thing I need it for is to hold my roms for use with my emulators. And maybe some music videos

Based on my experience, the HDD only work in the 3.0 USB slot.

Just ordered my shield and accessories have a few questions. PLEASE HELP!

So I just ordered my shield, remote, and micro sd. I'm really curious as to if I made a good combination of hardware. I picked up the 16gb version, nvidia remote, and the new fastest sandisk Mico sd. Here's my questions.
-I got the brand new sandisk uhs-ii u3 micro sd, I know the bus speed for micro SD on the shield is only rated uhs-1. Can I format it as adoptable storage using the USB 3.0 adapter so I can get the high speed the card is rated for or will I have to use the micro SD slot for adoptable storage and have my card speed throttled to the slower r/w bus speed. If this is the case should I have opted for a uhs-1 card for half the price
-I also have a USB 3.0 4TB external hard drive full of movies that I currently plug into my LG TV. It is formatted NTFS, will I be able to plug it into my shield and use it as my new media player since the one on my TV is kinda clunky. Can I read and write to NTFS on my shield?

Can anyone help with some of these questions? I canceled the 16gb version and opted for the pro. I also canceled the sandisk micro sd. Can I use my Samsung ssd in usb 3.0 enclosure as adoptable storage? Would I benefit any from it as far as load times on games or should I just install to internal 500gb drive? What are the advantages of a custom rom over rooted stock rom. With stock rooted rom can I install all the same apps from Google play or will I have more options with a custom rom? Also I see custom roms of full android 6.0 without nvidia skin overlay. Are there any real benefits this and will I lose any functionality? Any help is appreciated, responses please! I get my shield Tuesday.

Yeah ended up swapping for 16gb again and gonna use my Samsung ssd adopted. Found the answers to most questions just trying to decide rather to flash full android m or just root factory firmware.

Why not the 500gb with adoptable though. Isn't it a hybrid drive or just a regular 5400rpm hdd

I think the drive is a Hybrid. Pretty good chance that NVIDIA just used a USB 3.0 to SATA chip to service that 500gb drive. So I see no reason why you couldn't have just done it yourself.
How do you know the device did not come with the remote already? I purchased the 16gb and decided I did not want the remote so I didn't buy it, yet surprisingly it was in the retail box anyway.

As far as I know it's just the shield and the controller in the box according to the Amazon description and pictures. They do sell a bundle that has the remote included but I'm pretty confident mine has no remote. You cannot add, change, or remove storage internally on the shield nvidia made sure of that.

It all comes down to what you want to use the Shield for. If your installed games are not going to exceed those 16GB of flash (which of course will be less) I see no reason to get the Pro. Another valid point is the price difference: for the 100€ difference, I could get a 2-4 TB HDD.

Gotcha I plan on it, I have a 256gb ssd in enclosure I want to use as adopted storage and a 4tb wd external for media storage

Personally speaking, for my family anyway I just add drives to the home server, or retire them for bigger ones. Building a Windows home server 5 years ago was the best thing I ever did for media consumption. Sadly I only have 3 SATA ports so I am limited to the amount of drives I can add

One thing I forgot to mention: adding USB devices through a USB port will limit the speed and latency at which they are accessed.

OK how would you guys setup this is what I now have ordered and has already shipped so no going back. Idc if I use adoptable storage or not unless it benefits me. My usage will be downloading large torrent files and copying them to 4tb drive using shield as player, lots of large file gaming, kodi, Internet browsing and that's about it. Maybe hangouts

4tb wd my book
500gb hdd out of ps4

I wouldn't worry about adaptable storage. keep your external drives mounted as removable storage and have your apps and games all installed on your internal drive, keep the external drives just for media. I can't see you filling up 500gb with android apps and games any time soon.

Edit: I think I've got it figured out just gonna root stock rom and sideload whatever I can't get directly through playstore.
