Safestrap storage question. - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new to safestrap on the M. Since a good deal of the internal storage is take up by the stock rom, when making a slot, how much storage is left over? I feel like there won't really be enough since most larger apps install to the internal storage and not the SD card.
I'm rooted but with a locked bootloader, so safestrap is my only option.
Thanks.

Internal is already partitioned off into 4ish GB sections, so really you only get to exploit 4GB and about half of that is already dedicated to the stock ROM. I always ran 1GB slots when I ran SS because I use few apps. I've heard of people setting up 2GB slots but some of them would run into lag issues because they had so little memory issues.

I thought you would chime in here Rik. I did not know how to answer.
Also if the op does my sd swap & mhous33's dst SS for it. Will SS BS use internal sd or external sd? What do you think?

Honestly, I'm not sure. I know I could save SS backups to my external, but I'm not sure about being able to actually swap them.

Thanks for the help! I'm gonna try the SS on stock and put a rom on and see what happens. I use a fair amount of apps, so I'm gonna go with the 2 gig and see what happens with lag and adjust from there if needed.

Delete ROMs off the SD card to free up space....Or do you mean the internal storage of the actual MT4G[Max is apprx 1.1GB]. Use file manager to get rid of junk, or if you do mean the phone's storage then remove apps or use cache cleaner. If after flashing a ROM the phone says around 800-900MB then that's because of the ROM you're using.
Also, nandroid backups take up ALOT of space. Only keep 1 or 2.

nope, that requires repartitioning so that the sizes are split differently in the internal memory...i don't think anyone cares about this as long as the phone supports 64GB external.... the method was used for reviving the superbricked phone a year ago on ICS smaller system partitions resulted in a successful booting rom but with less storage.
But is there any way for installing all app and games in micro sd like kernel perseus whick allow install all in microsd whatever app or game
Thanks!!!

I've had luck with the FolderMount, liked it and bought the full version. There's a thread for it in the themes and apps section
PS. You should open new threads in the right sections :good:
There was a mod on the S3 that swapped the internal and SD memory - i.e. it fooled the system in thinking the SD card was internal.
Give it time, im sure the mod will become available - you will probably need to root

AFAIK the trick was modifing the vold.fstab file in system/etc/ still i think its useless since the most space is set on internal sd and not the system swapping them makes your storage space even less than it already is...who wants that to happen ?
he can get a light ROM i've seen one in the forums calles biochemical TW i think not quite sure which is 800MB well stripped but still he can add what he needs only and not get to the crazy 1.5 GB system

[Q] Internal Storage Size 19505

Hello
I've recently flashed [Rom]Google Edition galaxy S4 rom for i9505 [27 June] [Pure Nexus Experience] onto my S4. After following all the instructions it's working fine. Except the internal storage size is still 9.25GB with 8.18GB allocated. I would have thought that removing the stock ROM would have freed the internal storage space?
Cheers.

I think you answered your own question, "allocated" means "reserved" so in other words even if you
did not have any rom flashed/installed at all the phone would still allocate/reserve the 8.18GB space
which cannot be used for normal storage.
Good luck!
Thanks for your reply. It's a bit of a bummer though, is there no way to release the total storage size of the phones internal memory for user allocation ? Would it be something the developers could work on. But then I guess it comes back to the old saying, just get an SD Card.

I doubt that any of the devs could increase the user usable space on the internal sdcard.
But even if they increased it by 1GB or 2GB no one including you would be satisfied with
that for more than a few minutes anyway.
The external sdcards are really not that expensive and spending $20-30 bucks on
32GB sdcard for a device which cost over $650 is not that big of a deal.
I would think the actual GS4GE has a different pit file.
actually i thought it would free up internal storage after flashing cm10.1...
I already flashed and indeed its still the same space as TW.. puzzling..

People have answered this many times. The size of storage you get will not increase unless Samsung changes the partition size.
repartition
isn't possible to re-partition. I am sure samsung had a good reason to book 6 GB for OS. but stock edition will not need all this space! i would say maybe not more than 3.
so cant we repartition the reserved to achieve usuable of 13GB?

Yes you can but its very risky. See below
Skipjacks said:
In order to partition that internal memory you have to wipe it. And that means everything. System, recovery, download mode, boot loader, everything.
The connection with Odin or adb at this point would be totally housed in RAM. It would need to maintain that connection in order to complete the task of adding the new partition, adding the download mode back, adding recovery, and finally the ROM itself.
If the phone lost its connection during that process or lost power or the update process got pushed out of ram for any reason the phone would be hard bricked as there would be no way to reestablish communication with it to restart the process. You couldn't power it on or boot it to anything. It would be a $600 paper weight.
Meanwhile the alternative option is to just go buy an $8 external 16gb SD card or a $20 external 32gb SD card. That carries no risk whatsoever and expands your phone's storage well beyond the original 9gb of usable space you started with.

thanks for the info. but i dont see why i would lost power during the process or anything like that. is it the same risk as flashing a rom via odin?
Is this why I am only able to use about three gigs of my internal storage space? I see 3 or so are partitioned off for the ROM (See second attachment from within TiB), then I have 10 gigs, but 7 are full of something I can't locate - either from within my phone or through my computer (See first attachment from within ES File Explorer).
I've got to assume this is just something going on with my phone. I think everyone would be pretty upset if their 16 gig phone only gave them 3 gigs...
I wish we had something like DTa2SD for the S4! That would be great...

When everything goes well you are right, you will probably reflash the partition 1000 times without having any issues... the problem is if you were to be unlucky
No the risk is not the same as flashing a rom. If the process of flashing a rom is interrupted you just wouldn't be able to reboot your phone normally but you could always reboot in recovery or download mode to retry flashing the rom.

No you should have 8/9 Gb free on your Internal SD. The space you lose are the 2.19Gb in the system partition, but you have definitely something that is occupying your Internal SD.
Well crap. Any idea how to get rid of whatever it is? I can't get my phone to go into mass transfer mode at all (even with the SG USB Mass Transfer app) so the only thing I can do is browse on my phone through file explorers and nothing can see it.

Why can't I use my full internal storage?

So I noticed that when I go to the storage options it says there is 28-29 gigs worth of miscellaneous files when I know for a fact that my internal storage does not have that much on it. I have games installed but nothing more of 5 gigs. I tried running a new game and it said my storage is full but I can't figure out why? Any ideas?
Here's a picture. What I don't understand is why can't I use a larger partition for my internal storage ?
Click on miscellaneous files and it should tell you what's using up your memory

You are safestrapped aren't you... You CAN use all that memory... The settings/storage menu is just showing you how much memory you have left in the rom slot you are in right now... Use Root Explorer or whatever to see your actual free memory... It's still there... And yes.. Safestrap is supposed to work this way so you know when the slot partition you are in is getting full.
Well that's the problem. I click on misc files and it doesn't show. The highest one in there is 1.3 gigs then it goes down to ~50mb. I added up them all under misc and it's less than 3 gigs, which is why I don't understand why it says 28? It's causing me to not be able to install certain games >.>

You need to set the rom as the main. If you put it in one of the slots you will be limited to the storage space. Activate the main partition in safe strap. Delete the rom slot. And flash rom as normal on to the main slot.

You don't need to do this and ideally you should leave the stock ROM slot stock.
Android just doesn't read storage right when you have safestrap. The only internal storage you loose when using safestrap is how big of a ROM slot partition you create. If you look at your internal storage through something like ES File Explorer, it'll see the true available size. Even though Android says it's full, it's not and your phone will allow you to use it.
Yes but ss reads memory correctly when done in the main slot.

Just increases the chance of borking your device if something goes wrong with the stock slot... You could also just create a slot with a larger memory partition so you are still SAFEstrapped
Loading a custom rom in Stock slot goes against the whole purpose of why Safestrap was created.
It's a bummer when the stock slot goes bad and the phone won't even boot into download mode to use Odin and hack your way out of a tight spot.
Safe strap is sandboxed even the stock rom slot. Nothing you do it in can hard brick you. You can always Odin back.

How can a ROM not booting affect the Download mode portion of the phone?
Since we have locked bootloaders and the ROM loads after the kernel that controls the hot keys combinations at boot, I don't get it and never heard of such a thing happening to anyone

6.0 flashing noob questions

I just got the x pure with tax money and I want to root and ROM it I've read all the directions but my questions are a little deeper than that I think. I got the 16gb version cause I knew 6.0 and adoptable storage and I got a 64 GB card. So one of my questions is since I used adoptable storage once I download my ROM on device when I wipe the device before I flash, is my ROM data gonna be gone after the wipe or is there a safe place to put it so it doesn't get wiped? My next question is are any ROMs that uses 6.0 adoptable storage so i can get the same use ability out of my SD card, or is that built in to the Android code and always there on 6.0 so it wouldn't matter? Thanks for the help and if this is in the wrong place I'm sorry I know y'all could help me out the most. And any ROM suggestions that keep the moto voice and actions???
1. Wrong forum to post this. Please go to q&a sub forum.
2. When you use adoptable storage you will have 16+64 gb storage on your device
3. Adoptable storage is a beta feature, so expect bugs, with flashing other roms.
4. In that case use you sd card as adoptable storage.

In the future, it's easier for us if you omit #1 (#'s 2,3,4 were great answers) and simply hit the report post button to notify us to move it. Sometimes (especially on mobile apps like tapatalk) posts/threads land somewhere other than intended.

I found it better to use the external SD as portable storage when flashing ROMs because when I switched ROMs I had to format the card every time. Otherwise it would show up as unreadable after the ROM switch. If you plan on staying on the same ROM then you might get away with adoptable. I had a 16GB model too and didn't have a issue with storage space with it as portable. Just save your music and pics to the card.

No problem. Now if I quoted the right post it would have been better.... I did end up selling my 16GB and picking up a 64GB but for me it's kind of a waste because I put everything on my external card. I really didn't benefit anything other than a lighter wallet

Yeah my issue with the 16 GB is I have big games so I fill up internal memory fast but everything else goes on my card
So I shouldn't use adoptable storage before I flash a ROM just after it if I plan on staying on that ROM right?
