This phone has 8GB of memory (or 16GB for the other model). Can anyone tell me if all of this space is available for application installation? (excluding the space required for the system files etc)?
I thought I read somewhere that only 1GB was available for application installation while the rest could be used to store normal files like on the SD Card. If it is entirely available for application installation then I'm probably ok not upgrading the memory card as 8GB is plenty big enough for what I need. Even if it is limited to 1GB for application storage, this is plenty big enough for what I need.
TIA
1.8GB free for applications installation in the Galaxy S.
I assume the rest is used for storage space of user files like an extension to the SD card?
Correct.... It's an ideal dumping ground for Photos, Music or whatever takes your fancy.
I'm confused, after the 1.8gb where is the other 6.2gb?
The ~6 gb are called Internal SD card or something similar, and is available as storage for music, pictures or whatever you want basically.
Are you aware that with Android 2.2 (froyo) applications will be installable onto the memory cards.
yeah i never really put much on to the onboard memory...i install my apps onto the storage card

Pray tell how you are managing to install to SD Card as to install to other than internal memory you need Froyo on your system.

Strictly speaking, developers need to update their application before it can be installed onto the SD Card. I'm guessing a lot of the less maintained applications won't be updated and thus won't be able to be installed on the SD Card.
Not many applications fall in this area but I'm sure people have a few apps that work as is and haven't been updated for ages.
Hello all,
I just replaced the stock 2GB external SD card with a 16GB and transferred the movie over to the new 16GB card.
I thought all the apps that I'm downloading would be saving to the external 2GB SD card, but surprisingly that's not the case? I thought by default it would save to the external storage card first.
How do I manage where I want my apps and future downloads to be saved? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
All I see under settings -> SD card and phone storage -> (it shows all the info, but only gives me the option to unmount the storage on both internal and external cards.
Also on the very bottom of that screen it shows: "Application storage...Available space...1.50GB"
Is this a partition within the internal storage on the phone where all the apps have been getting saved to?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Basically the Vibrant gives u 16GB or space, 2GBs of this is for Applications an such, while the 14GB partition is for media (music, movies etc).
When you install applications currently they will install onto your 2GB partition. Once Froyo (android 2.2) hits you'll be able to select if you want the apps to install onto your SDCard.
Once the modding scene picks up a bit more I'm sure A2SD will be available and also a 2.2 port prior to the official one.
Hope this helps!

So basically right now we can't change the default settings of it saving to the partition space on the device itself? In my mind, "...hhmm there has to be a way around this...maybe?" LOL
I can't get the phone to mount on my PC or MAC. On the phone it shows as USB storage device connected and it also displays a window for me to mount or unmount....Nothing shows on the computer for me to be able to access it...hhmm
This is all so odd because my buddy has the old Galaxy i7500 and I'm able to plug his phone in and it mounts in seconds.
The only way for me to access the card is for me to use the SD adapter card and physically take it out of the phone every time..

If i replace the 2 gig sd card with avatar on with my 16 gig class 4 should i part it with a ext 4 or just format it all fat 32 ??? I was thinking just fat 32 the whole card since the apps default to the internal mem ..
Really? Not to be a downer guys, but why is this in the Development forum? Can we move this over to General or Q&A please. Once the Development forum starts getting flooded there's no going back.

Thanks for the quick responce iunlock im formatting now ...
Also, it's best to keep as much apps on the system memory as you can. Accessing data on the SD card is slower than from the internal memory.

No reason in creating an ext partition at this time since there is not much support currently for this kind of mod on the SGS. In the future i'm sure ppl will get this mod out there, but for the time being you should be good with Fat32.
Plus installing the apps on the internal mem is the best option for speed an such.

i'm running out of internal memory on my tab (sprint). i haven't installed a lot of apps. i have more apps on my droid incredible so not sure how i filled up the 2G. maybe it's coincidence but it started going low when i installed clockwork mod. i verified that my backup for clockwork mod is in the sd card so that's not it. any other places i can start to look internally? i barely have 10 or so apps in here.
Maybe check if files and pictures are going on your sd card and not the internal memory.
Try moving some apps to sd card and see if anything changes.

yeah, i moved all the apps that possible to move to the sd card. i've taken only 3 pictures. i still only have 28M left. i guess it's time to check all the folders.
I'm willing to bet that as far as Clockwork is concerned, that 2GB internal storage is seen as your SD card, and the MicroSD card is sdext, which Clockwork probably isn't aware of.
That's the way it works on non-CDMA Galaxy devices (though all those have like, useful amounts of internal storage so it's not really an issue like it is on the crippled Verizon/Sprint versions).

Hey Guys,
I asked @kokotas to help me figure out a way to make a Patch to extend the Internal Memory as for me, due to the size of the high-end Applications and Games, is too limited 16GB, 11,70GB available only, on our Z1.
So my first Idea was to sacrifice 16Gb Internal Memory and use 64GB External SD Memory formatted in EXT4 where all the Data will be stored.
To do so we have to understand few thing and how is the structure of the Z1 Kernel is made and try to extract "ramdisk.cpio" where we can edit "init.rc" and change the line "/data mount"
As for the kernel "Autopsy" we used @krabappel2548 kernel build, I hope he is fine with that.
From what we know, the recovery is injected in the boot.img and this makes things more complicated.
Are all kernels built in this way? Even the stock ones?
Also, is there a specific rule in the way of naming the included ramdisks?
I attached a picture to make things more clear.
Any help will be appreciate.

1. Sony doesn't have a recovery partition in their phones hence developers add the recovery in the ramdisk. Also stock sony kernels doesn't have a recovery included by default only bootloader/flashmode.
2. You can't adjust the 16gb internal partition without diving deeply into the bootloader. The NAND partition profiles are hardcoded in the bootloader so modifying even just a little bit of info in the partition of the NAND would brick your device. The only way I could possibly suggest to try is hijacking the fstab and ramdisk to unmount the internal storage and mount the external storage on init. But if your issue is only about disk space I suggest you leave the internal storage and just symlink the obb folder instead of hijacking the whole internal storage. And BTW the disk IO of the internal storage is worlds apart compared to your microsd card no matter what class it is so it would be very unefficient if you use your microSD card as internal. IMHO reading the dalvik-cache 1 by 1 on startup would be pretty slow! Same goes for reading the byte code of an app once you open it.

We know that. If there will be a Partition for recovery it will be much more easy and safe. That why we also used a Kernel with recovery implemented.

I know the difference between Internal and External Storage. Yes the internal bandwidth is higher but like I said is worth the sacrifice, or try. Best solution will be System and Apk on Internal and link the SD to use there all Data. This is more efficient that a third Apps like Link2sd or kind of. BTW, I don't think it will be so slow but we have to try. The idea have to be made to improve what next.
So we need more Ideas, do you have any?

A: This isn't about risk this is a fact. Once you successfully manage to alter the partition table of the built in NAND you're sure to get a hard brick from doing this.
Maybe not the whole internal storage but implement the external SD with the internal?
A: Implementing internal storage with external to support it is possible but limited. Like I said you could symlink the obb and Android folder to the external storage. That way you can allocate some of the storage space to data, dalvik etc. and the data files to the external SD which uses the most resources.
Hmm, changing the partition table has been successfully done on the xperia T

We do not try to repartitioning the Sony Z1 internal memory to get a recovery bootable from different partition, which still a very good idea to develop for Z1. We try to mount the External SD instead of the Internal to expand the storage for the Z1, and here we need a patch. If kind of patch like that will really work, with some help, anyone just will format the SD in EXT4 and use what like he like, 32/64GB.
So we will be glad even to involve more "Programmers" to help us make it true.
So any way to let this work?

Expand storage. You will be able to format a 64GB, micro SD in 2 Partitions and use 32GB by the System and 32GB like a normal SD, for example, and it will be managed by the system and not by Apps. So instead of 11,70GB you will have 30GB in System.
Surely this will just make accessing the SD card data really slow? Even with a class 10 running games off the SD card would be laggy as hell

Yes it is possible but not easy... I'm pretty sure the dev that made that had a hard time before he successfully got it. Also I'm pretty sure he has a JTAG box so in case his phone got hard bricked he can easily fix it again. Also IMHO that was already patched by sony on the latest s1boot so I'm sure it's alot harder than before.

Yes, he did brick his Xperia T a few times, and the LK kernel was never really taken up because of the risks.
But it does show that it was possible to change the partition table.

I can do that.
Only problem with having the SD used all the time for system files is the risk of corruption and or a failed card.
Saying that I had it on the S3 and it worked brilliantly, was a relatively simple script which required init'd support from a custom kernel.
In all fairness, after using folder mount the worries i've had with my internal memory have gone, i'm always over 10GB of space with several really big games installed which would easily take over the whole internal memory.

I had it on HD2 as well and never had any issues and I had full control of my device, this is what also we looking at, no restrictions and no storage limit on a high-end device. I will be glad to see 64GB recognized as my System Storage instead using Apps on Apps like the Mount Folder.
I play Most Wanted, of curse a bit slow, on mine HD2 so if we get this work we will have 40mb/s in writing and reading, instead of 70mb/s in internal, due to the limitation of the slot. I think even with a kind of transfare like that you will never see any slow down of the performance on your device.
Some Smart One will say now to me "Why then you don't go back to HTC". That's the point! Imagine have Z1 with such a Development and full control of you device.
At last it's a choice of the user if he want apply that patch or not, but I think if this will be possible many will be happy, but like I can see, we don't have much support due to the risk and any Developer will not take this in consideration, or maybe will, but apparently not now.

Have you used folder mount before? It really is a great app and i've not needed the larger internal storage since using it.
Hi all, so to start with, as the title says im constantly running out of space on the FN model 2015, so ive dived into the forum looking for help. First thing i tried was the sd card hack to combine my 64gb sdcard with the 8gb internal. Harra! it worked, but then i still run outa space as it dosen't seam to to use the sdcard space as i had hoped. It's like it just copys some of the data from the apps to the SD card like normal but without having to go into the each app and selecting external sdcard. Kinda thought no probs I'll download a custom rom with no samsung apps and with a min gapp giving me as much storage space i could get. I can't see one, starting to think there isnt one. So my question is, is it hard for me to take my backup of my stock rom and strip what I can out bearing in mind I'm a bit of a noob and have to follow instructions from the clever ROM makers? not to bothered about increasing the speed and looks just the space. Would be able nice to update them without having to delete a few and re-install the ones I deleted. Any advice on what coarse to take would be great. Maybe theres a ROM I've mist I could use and give thanks for?

Hi,
Instead of using Adoptable Storage, make 2 partitions on your SD, 1 FAT32 for photos, music, documents and another EXT4 for apps data. Use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd , i tested it.
You can make 2 partitions using PC or with TWRP Recovery.

Thanks for your reply! I went down the apps2SD route in the end. Kinda mest it up a bit but have free'd up nearly 1gb of space so thanks, that's more than enough! %) I ended up partitioning the SDcard and linking all the apps I'm not interested in, excel,Skype,Samsung etc. Anyway what i didn't realise was that i had mest the other part of the partition up. Ended up re-formatting the SDcard in recovery back to normal and those apps I didn't want 90% of the data of those have now been wiped %)
