[Q] Bought an i9505 off facebook and got burned! - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I bought a Galaxy S4 I9505 off some guy on facebook for £300 (cash), he said it was an unwanted upgrade (even showed me the delivery note).
Two days later, yep, you guessed it. It's been reported lost and consequently the imei has been blacklisted.
I feel really stupid for falling for this scam and I have reported him to the fraud team on my local police website. Whether they do anything about it or not is another story.
My question is.. what can I do about it? I have a brand new, shiny £300 paper weight in my top draw!
I was thinking about buying a new logic board and hoping for a new clean imei? Or maybe buy a faulty/damaged i9505 and making a working phone from the pair?
I am not allowed to list it for sale on Swappa and I boycotted fleabay years ago, what are my options for selling abroad?
Should I just throw it? Hand it in to the police? Salvage it? Is it even still feasible to sell it abroad? I heard AT&T were sharing T-mobiles blacklist database to make it worldwide? Is this true?
Thanks in advance for any help, I will certainly learn from this mistake in future.
Dave

I would hack the imei and change a bit here and there 300 is a good price for a S4

you should someohow contact the police and if you know the person who sold it you should give the police the numbers, this is really sad that people do this to others. but i'm sure you've heard when its "cheap" and theres no paper that the person has purchased it then you should just leave.
I'm going to report moderators to decide wether this thread should be open or not, but if i was you i would give it in.

Head's up....posts like this will get you uninvited to post on XDA.
We do not advocate changing IMEI's here. And we REALLY don't discuss how to do it. Any talk like this is a HUGE no no.
To the OP, You have a nice Wifi device at least. That's something. It's not like teh device is totally worthless.
You can also sell it on Craigslist as long as you are VERY clear and honest about its' condition. Of course that's a last resort of your local police can't do anything to help.

Well this is lame.

At the time I bought my HTC Touch Diamond 2, the HTC Pure was $200 with contract. Five days later, this ad appears on Fry's. Today, this appears.

Sucks to be you.
Now in the interest of keeping this post from becoming somewhat meaningless with dead links; mirror the ad image because that site does purging of old content and restate the contents of the second link for when the price changes in the future.

say that the 2 weeks it is taking for the phone to get there are 199 dollars worth of your time (the difference in dollars that you are losing)

Ha tell me about it. I wish my family had stayed in Greece. Europes got the whole mobile scene locked down perfectly.
Here it's you can only buy these phones and only use them on this carrier. It so retarded. A lot more freedom of choice in EU. Although carriers in Greece sell phones for way to much. The TD2 was going for $599 Euro on Wind over the summer.
Thank god for GSM and unlocked phones or I would die of having the worst in mobile tech.

Unfortunately, there's a return "processing fee" of $35 per line x four lines = too much to return.

"According to a release the company sent out to employees this week, the redux will kick off on December 11th at 6 PM, on HP's eBay Store. There, consumers will be able to get their hands on a refurbished 16GB or 32GB model for $99 and $149, respectively. They'll also have the chance to get a case, charging dock and wireless keyboard as part of a $79 bundle, though the sale isn't entirely lawless, with each buyer limited to a maximum of two Touchpads."
So if you guys missed the last one, like me, get ready for it

If they sell it for $50, I might.
Even just to resell this is an incredible deal, they go for 300+ on ebay with CM7 O:
Oh well. Better than nothing right?
It is better than Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet.
Hope they (Palm) find a better home.
Why cant they have deals like this here in south africa? Bleak!
damn for me to order one from the US to Sweden it will cost me 99$ for the tablet 34$ for shipping and 60$ taxes. Sums up to about almost 200$
Refurbished?
Sold my 32GB on ebay for $250
Any idea if we will be able to order from Europe?
Or tricks to do it anyway if it is not possible?

Imo these tablets are not really worth it, no video out...and given the fact they are refurb's no thank you
Looks like they sold out in 15 minutes! I clicked and clicked and clicked, but . . . you know what I got? BUPKISS!!!
*kicks stupid, slow-ass, rural DSL connection*
Was a total cluster youknowwhat, it was sloooowwww going, page load errors, etc.
In the end, I'm looking at it like I save a couple hundred bucks by NOT getting the ones I wanted
I got 2 of them.
The trick was to go to ebay.ca or ebay.uk

Has anyone else gotten this deal?

Walked into the Sprint store last Friday.
Bought the Galaxy Gear and they gave me a Note 3 for free.
Nonsense

I swear to god.
Proof... They had to ring up the Jawbone because the Gear wasn't in the POS yet.

I call shenanigans !
Hogwash, I say!!!
Yes, I sat on my laptop this morning, researched product numbers for items, and proceeded to photoshop an electronic receipt just so that I can reap the acceptance of everyone on XDA.
It was a serious question. I wasn't sure if this was an actual promotion or if I just got extreeeeeemly lucky.
Colossal screwup perhaps? Seems odd they would discount the more expensive of the two. I could almost see it being the other way though... buy a Note 3 outright and get a free gear.
Let us know if you get contacted about it. If this is actually true, there are going to be a LOT of PO'd people I would gather.
EDIT: Apparently I hit save twice.

So far I haven't been.
What's weird is that the day I got the phone, they didnt have the Gear in stock yet so the saleswoman told me they'd ship it to my house (that was friday). Monday came along and I was curious about a tracking number so I called Sprint. Sprint had no idea what I was talking about. Called the store back and the saleswoman who sold me the phone said they were shipping it straight from the store.
This wasn't a third party Sprint store either, it was a corporate one.
I'm going to go with the theory that she wanted me and gave me a freebie. Regardless, I don't get the hate for this watch. I think its pretty damned sweet.

Whatever her reasoning was, you definitely got the better end of that deal! Have you tried out the Gear yet? I'm fighting the urge to grab one...but the desire to walk around and talk to my wrist like James T.Kirk may prove to be too much for me to resist,

I don't get all the negativity surrounding the Gear.
I love this thing. Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat all have apps to access their services (if you're into that). The phone call clarity is actually better IMO than speaker phone on the Note and loving the camera function.

Noob alert!! Hi folks

Hi there, I'm completely new to tablets, but reasonably tech savvy, before my kids arrived I was clocking a64's at - 70C for 3.1 gigs!! I've been snooping about on these forums last week or so, trying to get up to speed. Essentially my wife wanted a tablet for the family, so I got my thinking cap on and did a little research. I hate apple and the whole locked into them forever because you've paid thousands on films and music and apps!!! So I looked for the next best thing, but it HAD to have extendable storage, (sorry google!)
Ended up at the 605 LTE version mainly for the snapdragon chip, which I see having at least some development over next year or two. I live in the UK, there is NO LTE here at all, in fact I think only legit models are 16 gig wifi only.. having heard the lag blah blah, decided I defo wanted LTE model preferably 32 gig due to the new KK situation. Cutting long story short, I have decided to go the grey import route, likely from HongKong, managed to get 32 gig LTE for £353 delivered from amazon, massive price difference to me buying in a legit shop prob saving 40% on likely price when (if ever they actually release the LTE in uk!).
Now I'm aware that KNOX means any rooting is a big no no, but if I've got a HK model then I'm prob screwed on warranty anyways? I found some info from someone else with one of these tablets and they say the 4g isn't working in uk, a quick check on samsungs webby shows it's not even got a modem file for uk? Right, so I saw stocky's mod thread and by all accounts looks great. I also saw he has a seperate modem file will this make the 4g work?
Anyways this was just a little hello thread, you'll prob find me in the noob corner asking stupidly silly questions, but I am a willing student, and sorry if I'm a pain in the butt Can't wait for the note to arrive now, already ordered stuff on the say-so of this board, and that's starting to arrive, the tablet I think is coming long distance but hopefully not too long to wait.. Anyhow, ciao for now, and hopefully I can find a few other brits, I've seen skinhead and a geordie lad around and about, maybe we can start up some help for other nutters who order chinese stuff and try to get it to work in the uk!
Here are the LTE bands the HK N10.1-14 supports...

EE uses 1,800MHz currently but own 800/2,600MHz spectrum and will likely use it at some point. O2 uses 800MHz. Vodafone uses 800MHz and 2,600MHz. 3 uses 800MHz and 1,800MHz. Unless any of them are using splintered sub-frequencies within a specific band an HK N10.1-14 should work fine on UK LTE.
TY for the quick response.. I have flashed bioses (is that even a word?) before on mboards and gcards.. I also used to flash a cableTV decryption box via an rf cable til the dreaded niagra 3 came out!! I only blew up one g card, and that was being rather rude and unlocking all the pipes, ramping the voltage and expecting the cooler to cut it because I had lapped it and used some decent artic silver lol! To be fair it did last near 3hrs on a mad graphics test loop lol!
is there a file that will change the region to BTU? Which is uk i think? Like I said.. apologies for the noob questions. Mind, I'm thinking I'm likely to own this longer than 2 years in which case the warranty is worth diddley anyways, not planning on selling it, it'll prob become kids thingamado once I get a new toy You reckon I just root straight away?
I don't understand all the worries about tripping knox, unless the file you flash causes damage to the hardware, it doesn't void warranty. Rooting on android and even jailbreaking on iphones doesn't void warranty what so ever. Warranty is completely hardware related and when you buy a device, you're in title to put anything you want on it since you own it. I've had hardware issues with my previous phone, a HTC one m7 and although it was rooted, it was repaired no questions asked. My brother had an issue with his screen on a rooted Samsung s4 and again, no questions asked. Just because you choose an alternative software solution on a device you own doesn't mean a company loses its responsibility to ensure your product meets its requirements. I don't know the law in the UK or the US but here in the Netherlands it doesn't work like that.

Sellers remorse?

Need opinions here. Picked up a white Essential phone/360 camera bundle last week on Amazon for $399. I ended up listing the NIB sealed bundle on Swappa and it sold for $509 (profit after Swappa fee). Haven't sent the buyer the phone yet, and kinda having sellers remorse. Should I hold onto the phone and use it or accept the sale and eventually hope the $399 bundle comes up again on Amazon in the near future? Using a Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra right now that replaced my dead Nexus 6 and although not the fastest phone, it has a great screen and solid build quality.
In the end I like the Essential phone and want it, but making $109 profit is also a good thing.
The color I really want for the Essential is the yet-to-be-released "Ocean Depths" color model

This phone is easily worth & 509...and a steal for $399 on Amazon with the 360 camera. No way I would give this up. They have kept their word on updates and improvements have been amazingly fast.
Only issue is Andy Rubin going on leave because he couldn't keep his dong in his pants at Google ?
You made an offer to sell, someone took you up on that offer. Honor the deal you made.
You do have an out. Whatever feels right to you. Maybe phone became "broken" since sale?
What happens if I sell a listing I can't fulfill?
Did you sell your listing on another site (e.g., eBay or Craigslist) and forget to pull it before it was bought on Swappa? Unfortunately, this does happen from time-to-time, and it's important that these situations are handled properly!
Here are the proper steps on how to proceed in this kind of situation:
Refund the buyer via PayPal immediately
Leave a comment on your listing's sale page explaining the situation to the buyer
Flag Swappa staff to inform us to refund the*buyer's sale fee

Pardon me for being such a strict literalist, but your poll question isn't a yes/no question, it's an either/or question. I'm guessing a "yes" response means "keep the PH-1," right? As it stands, a "yes" response means, "Yes, you should keep or sell the Essential." We all know you didn't mean that, but, just sayin'...

That's definitely the high road here, especially since the intended buyer may have passed over other offers to accept this one or missed out on other offers while waiting for you to confirm the sale. Put yourself in his shoes. How do you feel when you click "Buy now" on some site and then later get a message saying, "Sorry, that item is no longer available." Whatever you decide, do it quickly or the fallout could be worse.

You are only thinking of yourself. You agreed to sell it, so pack it up and send it to the dude.
I agree that you should send the phone since you sold it.
Anyway, you said you'd really rather have the ocean depths PH-1. You're already making $109 on the agreed-upon sale. Take the money from your profitable sale and put it aside for when the ocean depths phone is released.
