Slim comes with a kernel, as do all roms. You don't NEED to use another one.
If you want to use another one use one made for AOSP.
What we can't tell you is which one is the 'best' one. Only you can decide which is the best one for you based on what you like. As such, discussions about which is the best are not permitted on XDA.

What he said ^^^^^^
Try some roms out. You know the deal.

I assume that you're asking which rom is best?
No one rom trumps all other roms. It really comes down to personal preferences. Try them out (safety) and see for yourself.

I'm only using TW roms for the moment. I normally use AOSP roms, but this is the only rare occasion where my current phone software is up to date with aosp. Meaning that both are on 4.2.2. You really have to try each one for yourself to see what works best for you. If I decide to run an AOSP rom, it would be Task360's AOKP. He is a developing machine. Cranks out at least 2 updates a week to improve functionality. As far as TW roms go, Scott just brought clean rom over to the S4. I'm loving Mint jelly by Nottach right now. Development is high right now.

Same here. So far all the roms I've tried are TW based. I've tested MDOB which is very good... Currently I'm on Shostock which also smooth.
Haven't tried AOKP / AOSP as of yet..
nice this is the first one i tried and i really like it [ROM][4.2.2][June 2] Slim Bean jflteatt [build 6] - LOKI patched... the dark theme plus all the at&t stuff removed. wasn't asking what's the best just looking for opinions. i know "best" is just preference.
thanks for the feedback
FYI, I believe it is Task650 not 360.
Task650 AOKP Rom. While roms are subjective to the user, I use his rom because of I'm very familiar with it. Its extremely stable and you can pretty much customize everything in the rom. Not too mention, I love the pure google feel. TW on the S4 left a bad taste in my mouth with how much it freaking lagged.
First: Questions go in Q&A
Second: All ROMs are the best for those that use them. There is no substitute for reading the ROM threads in development

I9500... Good ROM!

Hello All,
Its been a while since I have had some fun with my phone. Finally decided to get a custom ROM. But since I have been out of touch, so to speak, needed to know any good custom ROM that are available now.
Don't think you're allowed to ask questions like that.

Well, you are advised to pick up any ROM that will suit your needs. stock, CM, MIUI, aroma - feel free to choose from.
If still in doubts, ask your nanny. She definitely will change your ROM (after changing your milk bottle)

It seems that you want more serious answer. OK then.
As someone mentioned before, you, while entering the XDA, should be able to:
1. download several ROMs;
2. be able to read the feedback provided by the ROM's users;
3. On the above base, choose the ROM which suits you.
I honestly, deeply regret that you are unable to do the above steps by yourself?
What advice you can obtain at XDA forum? Maybe.. hmm.. ask your nanny? (as I stated before. If you do not have an a nanny, ask someone above 11y.o or IQ above 30).

Best custom ROM for Nexus 7

Hi all, my wife wants me to enable flash on her Nexus 7 which I obviously can't do as she has the latest ROM from Google on it (4.4 I think ), what's a good custom ROM ( by good I mean stable not interested in overclocking and all that other stuff ) for this device ? I've tried googling but have been overwhelmed with information so I thought I'd try here. TIA.

Bro, 1. this is the wrong section, only ROM/kernel/mod threads belong here and 2. this type of thread is not allowed by the XDA rules, because there's not a best ROM, it depends on your personal preference [emoji28]
By the way, I'm using PA 4 stable and it works very well for my needing
Oops sorry, by best I meant comes reccomended - will post in proper place next time thanks
Thread moved
As for most recommended, that is not much different than asking best
This is a development site and members seeking "best" or "popular" or "recommended" are advised to read through the Development sections
The ROMs are all there and you can assume the ones on the first page are most recent and most popular
Read through the threads to see any issues and if they will affect your usage or not
No one uses their phone exactly the same as you or your wife. So it is best to decide for yourself as to what is best.
You will find most users of a ROM will think that one is the best or most stable, so it all depends on the user.

AOSP Look TW ROM??

Hey all, I usually don't do this as I've seen some other people bi*****g about development on this phone and how it's stalled. I am NOT saying that at all, was just wondering if anyone is/doing/going to develop a TW (since no AOSP ) ROM that looks like AOSP? Somewhat like @nitroglycerine33's Eclipse? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2351840
Or if anyone knows how to and would like to, I have some people who are very interested in having ROM(s) out there like this and can donate. Thanks
try raffaeles88 foxhound rom.. it's the closest one to aosp.. ?

I'm going to make two assumptions: 1) you're on Verizon and 2) you don't have a developer edition phone. If that is the case you can only flash TW based ROMs made for the Retail version of the S5. Having said that there is one ROM I'm told that comes pretty close to an AOSP look and feel and that is the Alliance ROM. I have not flashed that ROM, but reading through the threads in the Android Development section there seems to be a lot of happy users of that ROM. On the other hand, if you want a very lean, debloated, fast ROM with great battery life and everything works (all essential functions) there is the Syndicate ROM which as near to the pure Android experience as possible (hard to tell it's TW based). Both these ROMs can be flashed through SafeStrap or if you have a Dev Edition S5 just flash through TWRP. Unless you have a Developer Edition S5 you're not going to be able to flash any of the available AOSP ROMs...it just isn't going to happen without an unlocked bootloader and no one has broken that "code" yet.

Lol well the first assumption should be easy as i posted in Verizon general S5. And an obvious yes for the 2nd as i know the only aosp roms are for the dev ed. Alliance rom is nice but too big and many things with stock ugly 4.4 colors

The OP was quite easy to understand. Since we don't have an unlocked bootloader I want a TW ROM that looks like aosp, hence the link to my old favorite ROM from when I had the s4 I put there as reference. He might not be getting an S5 so I just wanted to see if someone could get in touch with him and Maybe get some permissions to do that or w/e..

Well now that i see from my computer rather than phone i guess it's general S5 which is silly that when i click on general under the verizon section it doesnt have it's own section. oh well
It wold be awesome to port this to G900F also. It's the most beautiful TW AOSP theme I have ever seen. Damn you made me regret my old S4 lol. Pure AOSP look with TW Camera...
I follow you, if someone is willing, I would donate for this kind of work.
I will like too a tw with AOSP look

Well, I've learned on this site that not everything is obvious all the time. I've seen T-Mobile and ATT users posting question to this site. Anyway, I just wanted to confirm, but I must agree, if I had read your profile a little closer I wouldn't have had to make any assumptions. My answer, however, remains the same.

Cyanogenmod: why are there no stable release?

I'd like to use CM12.1 (marshmallow) but I realize there still are no stable release? Why? Is it not good enough yet?
I've had a pretty bad experience with CM on my old Galaxy S4 so I'm a little afraid to remove the stock recovery and ROM from my Moto X Play. I want to make sure that it's bug free (or as buggy as stock) and suitable for day use. In other words I want to flash it and know it's fully reliable. Given the fact that there are only nightly releases, are they reliable enough for this?
Thanks

I can't vouch for the latest releases, as my xplay has been broken for like 3 months now, but being a nightly doesn't inherently make it unstable. Stable builds are usually relabeled nightlies. I say give it a shot. You can always go back to stock if you don't like it, unless you're speaking about voiding warranty

Oh! I thought nightlies were unstable releases. So before yours broke, you had a good experience? No problem with camera or other stuff?
It's not really a question of warranty but rather just not having any issues when I need it to work. For instance, with my Galaxy S4, the camera kept crashing while I was out with my kids so I lost time trying to make it work when I wanted to take a picture. That's the kind of thing I wouldn't want happening just because I got another ROM.
Indeed I did (have a good experience). If you're every unsure of a nightly, head to the thread. You'll usually find one or several people commenting if it's no good.

Yeah I had a look (I just realized I was talking about CM13 not 12.1) but given there are now 205 pages I thought I'd ask about the nightly situation in a different thread.
I think I may try it and restore it from the ROM available in the forum.
Oh and I keep wondering, given Motorola never actually released the ROM, how can someone make it available?
I m using nightly for like 3 months ......and I can say nightly is far better than stock if you are looking for customization and speed. I recently tried to go back to stock 6.0.1 but that experience is so "LAGGY" that I again return back to CM.I can say that CM nightly build working best for me with my requirements(like gaming and also photography and editing and HEAVY Customization and many more ) . and about custom recovery,it's a must have tool I suggest as with that I can return back to my previous builds. SO i recommend to go for NEW CM build, but in the end it's upto you.
and if u r still fearing about NIGHTLIES then flash the custom recovery(twrp) and then make backup of whole stock system and then do whatever U want to.
Btw this is the wrong forum to discuss things
