Wifi tether on unlimited data? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to be able to take advantage of my unlimited data and use the wifi hot-spot feature without paying for it any ideas on how to do this. not my first time rooting an android device but first time trying to break past wifi tether feature
Sent from my LG-LS980 using xda app-developers app

There are people said to have gotten it working in diff environments if you read around, and this doesn't really belong in the dev section,

There is a Q&A section for a reason buddy, This is only for Development.

You can call Sprint and add Hotspot to your account...instead of violating the ToS and being one of the people who help put an end to unlimited data. If $20 more / month is the difference in bills being paid or not, then maybe cell phones aren't your cup'o'tea.

Respectfully, I disagree. This is the development section and this mod SHOULD be under development. Why it isnt, I still dont understand. It is a mod people want regardless of how anyone feels about breaking ToS, which by the way, is a rediculous argument.
I dont see this being under the dev section as litter. It should be developed, and have ongoing work if needed, just like any other Rom or software for the sprint G2.

I agree to the degree that there should be a subforum for requests, I think it's more a reason of organization then just ToS. But I understand where you are coming from. If it were up to me, I'd also create a thread about unlocking the phone's GSM capabilities, which imo, is also a pretty important part of dev.

Just get foxfi it works on every phone. Google has the pro key, I'm sure, for you people that don't want to shell out the 5 bucks.

I have it, and that info is incorrect. Foxfi does not work on many phones right now. LG G2 included.

It's not a "rediculous" argument..nor is it a ridiculous argument either. You talking about circumventing -- purposely, in order to gain something for free that is a paid service. This should be discussed right along with IMEI switching and ESN switching...because it falls into that category. If you're gonna steal, do it right...steal the phone, circumvent the bad/blacklisted ESN and go all-out to get some free data.
I've had this in every ROM I put on my GS3 and even my old Optimus S...and never used it because I didn't pay for it. Was it unlocked? I guess so, it was in the menu...but it wasn't something I wanted to break my morals in order to use.
People want this then they wonder why carriers want to increase prices and charge more / add data caps. This is the exact reason.

This is a development thread not ? Thread.
I will ask to close this thread

The reason data rates go up is called profit, not users circumventing something they DO pay for, unlimited data, on a phone I own and control the software on. Keep drinking the koolaid believing that data os expensive. I worked in the hosting business and web search industry of well over 15 years. I can go buy backbone bandwith right now for $0.003 a GB. Know your facts please. Research actual bandwidth prices and you'll realize why mobile providers make so much money on data. Margins tell it all.
Debate over. This should be about development and facts, not opinions.

isn't circumventing part of development? why else would we root our phones its not to break the securities they put in place?
The last time I read the TOS tethering was allowed in limited use.

This is the Development section. Request belong in General.

Benny that was kind of my point. There should be a thread for this in development. Putting things in general hasnt helped sprint development at all. Things are being lost in there with every other carriers stuff.
If roms are in development even when they arent complete are allowed here then why other under things like tether mods allowed here? Should there be a thread for requests under sprint? Maybe so. However other handsets forums on xda have devoted sections to specific carrier version. Why doesnt the G2?
Personally I cant find much under general, or questions, that helps me with the ls980.

If anyone can look into this I put it into development as to find a permanent solution so far I have tried foxfi and a few others and so far no dice the one I have can't turn on the access point...

So, what's your stance on Verizon's tethering policy? Before, you had to pay for it no matter what plan you had. Now, if you're grandfathered in to unlimited data, the took the option away. If you're on their tiered plan, it's now free. They've taken away the option for people who could use it effectively, and given it to people who will make them money if they try to use it in any serious sense.
Now, looking at it from another perspective, the ability has been built into my phones in the past so I don't have to use their software. In those cases, Verizon is not allowing me to use my phone as it was intended. While not a violation of the LTE purchasing agreements because they still provide 3G, it is a loophole that they are taking advantage of. As long as they provide service other than the LTE bands purchased, they can prohibit us from using our own tethering apps indefinitely without being sanctioned. How is that fair? In essence, they are robbing me of the ability to use my hard/software as it was designed. Unlike them, I don't have expensive lawyers or lobbyists in Congress' pockets.

Deodexed version V8 to be uploaded tomorrow by our lovely devs. This next weekend, if work doesn't have me too long, I'll take a look in the files and see what I can do.

[Q] Samsung Vibrant wifi-only updates?

Hi everyone! I'm brand new to the Android scene, so please be patient with me. I bought a Samsung Vibrant to develop on, but really didn't want to buy a monthly plan (was just going to use it over wifi). Turns out though, with the recent JI6 update, I can't get it unless I have an actual data plan (I called T-mobile to confirm). They said it'll be the same situation when Froyo eventually comes out.
SO... now I'm asking the hackers! Is there a way to manually install the updates via wifi only? Or should I abandon my quest for a wifi-only Android device and take this thing back before my 30 days are up?
Jesus Christ dude just take a look at the Vibrant development section.

Wow calm down, he said he is new to this bear with him. Instead of of harassing him you could have answered and then this thread would of been death by now.
Anyways, you can update to the JI6 though something called ODIN, the forum under development has many tutorials of how to do it, all you need is ODIN and the Samsung Vibrant drivers, which are on development forum on the "bible thread" .
I hope that helps.
Here is a video to give you a basic idea of how to use ODIN again don't use the files shown there because they are outdated.

You could call up T-Mobile, have them activate the Internet for one month, then close it after you get the update. Just be sure not to sign a contract.

You don't have a plan with T-Mobile period, or you don't have a plan that includes data?
If you have a plan with T-Mobile even without data you WILL get the OTA, I did and a few others did without a data plan. Also I'm on a prepaid plan, I got the update notification while wifi was on.
If you don't have a plan with T-Mobile at all then I'm not sure if you would get the OTA or not. My guess is you won't.
Also as the others have said, you could go to the development section and look at some of the threads that will help you get the update without waiting for the OTA notice.

Our Fight Against Verizon

If you haven't heard all ready Verizon is tracking down root users and limiting there data or fully suspending it so watch out. But we have to fight back against them by hiding Verizon from seeing that we are proudly rooted and some people have said the would sue Verizon. Please do whatever you can to fight against this.
Also motorola and htc are going to start doing the same.

Wow... just... wow.... First off, they MAY be tracking phones. Second, there is NO proof they are limiting anyones data or suspending service. I only posted that because it's something that MAY be happening, and people should be aware. It wasn't meant for fear mongering.
If you would have read the whole article, you would have seen that this is an INDUSTRY WIDE thing. Not just Verizon.
There is no need for ANYONE to freak out right now.
IF its true, and they are tracking people who have loaded GB on their phones, there isn't a damn thing you can do about it now, so just sit back and enjoy your damned GB Droids.
I am about 80% positive they are tracking after I googled for 5 hours.

It's very possible, and I wouldn't blame them too much. They should have a way to detect fraudulent warranty claims.
And for those of you who think rooting your phone and loading custom ROMs shouldn't void the warranty, your wrong. The carriers and OEMs put software on the phones they KNOW work. They DON'T know if the custom ROM you are using will work correctly.
I have no problem with rooting at your own risk (ie: Voiding warranty)....that's quite frankly, the way it should be, because if I'm overclocking my device I understand I'm increasing the chances of damaging the internal hardware in my phone. Nevermind, all the people who brick their devices because they don't know what they're doing.
I would hope that Verizon doesn't have the balls to try and go after people who are not doing anything illegal with their rooted device though (ie: Not tethering, regardless of how you feel about it). It's already been established that it's legal to root your device. Myself, while I've downloaded the tethering app, I've never used it for more then 30 seconds to try it out and see if it worked. I only downloaded it for emergency purposes, and I've yet to have said emergency.
Why would the carriers even care if we're rooted and using custom ROMs as long as we're not doing anything bad, like the aforementioned tethering? We paid for our phones and we pay our bills, so we should have the right to do as we please as long as we're not infringing on others.
As for me, I will stay rooted and if a class action suit is filed, will happily join in.
My question is' if we installed the non rooted version of gb, are they tracking that too?

They have been tracking root users long before the GB leak. From what I've read, they have been looking at who doesn't take updates. I don't know exactly if they put any snooping file in the GB leak or not.

Guys I really don't think they will be doing this. I understand that root should be a void in warranty, and totally agree with that, but if they shut off our services for having root, than a lawsuit should be made. They have no right to shut them down. Doesn't that breach that law made like a year ago about jailbreaking/rooting?

Well, you could argue that rooting your device is legal, but carriers don't have to let them on their networks.
Anyways, I highly doubt any carrier will be cutting anyones service.
I think what they might do is this:
They will send a notice to everyone that they are tracking root users, their meids will be flagged to ensure no warranty claims can be filed by them, and that if caught tethering without paying, they will be charged a fee.
That would be a logical way to go about it.

Exactly what I was thinking. That might be a no go with root for me. I need my warranty. Tethering is honestly not a huge deal to me, but if my warranty is gone I don't know what I'd do. I'm sure if one carrier does this, they all will start rewriting their policies.
This thread seems a bit incendiary.
I'm not sure what lawsuit people intend to file against Verizon. It isn't clear that tracking rooted users violates those users' rights in any way.
As for denying warranty service, I have rooted every Android phone that I've had, and I have no problem if Verizon denies me warranty service on any phone that I have rooted (so long as the problems could logically be related to rooting). I also modified my car when it was under warranty, and if the dealership denied me service on the exhaust, that would have been fine (although they couldn't deny me service on, for example, the suspension).
If I brick my phone, then that is my fault - Verizon shouldn't have to give me a new one.
I have no doubt that they are tracking/logging rooted users. Maybe this is why GB got leaked in the first place? This is all a result of the community.
The ones that tether the 20ish gb of data a month, to the "noob" that roots and messes something up and instead of reading up on how to fix, they just return it to Verizon. I broke a D2 a few months back, but instead of returning it, I bought a new one at full price because I was rooted. Its just a moral thing to me.
As long as you don't tether alot or do anything else illegal, I believe that just being rooted will not result in a termination of contract. That's just my opinion.

This is what I found out. They are tracking use to try and detect those who are tethering. AT&T is also doing this now to try and find out who is tethering w/o the appropriate packages. What they will do when they find the un-authorized tethering people is beyond me, that wasn't told to me. I was also told not to install the GB leak. This comes from a very reliable source within Verizon. I wasn't told much more than that or what they are doing with violators. I don't know what the deal is with the GB leak, I just know I will listen to my friend and not install it. Usually I am one who roots immediately and gets to town doing what they don't want us doing, but since this came from a really close friend, I will listen and take his advice.
I don't see why you shouldn't install the GB leak if you are just doing the non-rooted version. I mean what will verizon do? Block you're phone when the official OTA comes out? They can't do that.
I really don't see anything wrong with installing the GB leak, especially if you aren't tethering or anything to steal.

So much paranoia! I always like the "friend at Verizon" story with vague warnings of punishment from Verizon should we install the forbidden leak.
You'll forgive me if I'm a bit skeptical of your story.
I got a guy that has a friend that's related to the uncle of this chick that went to the same high school as this one dude that this other guy knew that said.....wait what were we talking about?
I think a lot of people are blowing this out of proportion. Most the people at Verizon haven't the slightest clue about what the head honchos are trying to do. They pass a lot of BS to their employees to see who leaks out information. Verizon tries to keep secrets the best they can, I doubt anyone knows what Verizon is trying to do. That's going for VZW reps and such. I don't know exactly how the GB leak was leaked out, but personally I'm glad it was, it is such an improvement for our phones and something we really needed. If this happens it happens, I don't know what I'd do (leave VZW, unroot, stay rooted) until the time comes to be honest.
First off.. wow.. with the Big Brother is watching stuff. And 2nd who cares if they are?! I will root every phone I get until I drop dead. And if you want to know why they leaked the GingerBread Rom.. it's called Research & Development! It's the old, "if we can't beat them -secretly join forces with them".

Its probably nerd rage... hes mad hes working in a Verizon store and is just trying to scare you =D
There was a thread on this subject before, unfortunately it's been merged into the giant 'Network-related' thread.
The long and short of it is that they're supposedly introducing methods of tracking rooted/jailbroken handsets because people are abusing tethering.
But if you want to read what was said, it starts here.
You'll just have to try and follow the discussion as best you can given it's mixed in with posts from other threads.
cool i'll check it out.
Supreme court ruling was very clear on this. They (the carriers) cannot act against anyone with a custom rom... because the ruling clearly stated that you bought the phone therefore it is yours to do what you want.
The Tethering is a different issue all together, that is easy to track, just by usage.
But the long and the short of it is the carriers have no authority over the phone you purchased as long as you are not abusing the data agreement
well as it seems they used a poor method on finding out who has a custom rom or not. accepting and not accepting an ota update is stupid because there could be and probably are a bunch of people that don't care about updates (i know a fair amount of them) that don't install these. i just read what p3droid had posted upon the topic. it is very disturbing. considering some people (crazy and pointless as it is) use their phones for torrent and (as useful as it may be) VPN services such as tech support for companies and so on. so the use of data whether tethered or not is no different. personally i use my phone for tech support from time to time with the use of vpn services and remote desktop. it is if you look at it insane! it's like having your isp telling you what websites you can and cannot go to.
ok now that i have all that out of my head and on forum, even if it is alittle random. thoughts on this topic more specifically?!
me thinks that Verizon is trolling you, and like stated before me, just a nerd rage

Yours is probably the first logical argument i read regarding the tethering debate. The first one to actualy make me understand the reasoning. Ok, I'll bite into that one, if we are truly, undoubtedly talking about un unlimited plan, i understand why limitations must be aplied, but what about when talking about caped plans, how is that logic not abusive from the carrier's side, as it logically seems to be abusive on the consumers side when talking about truly unlimited data... could it be about those grandfathered unlimited plans? Even so, if one looks at this issue objectively, it still is the carriers fault. What would you a expect, as a carrier that applies hidden or bogus charges, from the consummation? There's no right or wrong here, from neither sides, as i see it, based on your logic. This is the balancing i was talking about. But instead, we get a rushing of decisions, that apparently seem to be in everyone's interest, nationwide, but, actually, in depth, it turns out to "hurt" consumers that don't realy deserve that kind of, for lack of a better word, ruling...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe some Countries and actually some Counties around the US do this. I've read some guys on here complaining about their internet being data capped and controlled on which websites they can access. This is true also in some Counties around the US. I recall a few Counties around me here in New York that dont allow the selling of hard porn.
And if I'm also not mistaken (and I certainly could be, because I've never tried this), if you try to sign up for a porn site, if you live in one of those zip codes, and you put in your info (ie. zip code), it detects your zip code and doesnt let you register.

next step in this discussion?... well, might as well!
who wants to start the honors?
Honestly, I dont care if they ban or limit us rooted users (not that it will happen or maybe, one thing are manufactores and one thing are carriers) but what I dislike about LTE is that it gives carriers the ability to monitor what we surf, download and even down to the quality of videos and pictures we see. They can filter pages too. LTE Was not made with consumers in mind but carriers. FCC rule out that ISP WIRED CANNOT do this but have given WISP a go on this. or at least they havent rule any regulations. MetroPC does this already.

Wireless Tether redirecting to Verizon site

I've recently upgraded to the newest ROOTED OTA GB for my DROID X and noticed that my Wireless Tether no longer works.
Instead it directs me to the Verizon Customer Service site where it shows pricing for their tether plans.
Is anyone else having this issue??
That is because you are not paying for the service. It is a paid service and they are able to track if you are trying to do it. Solution: don't tether, or pay for it
incredibly unhelpful.......they're sucking enough money out of us already for the data plans on both the phones and tablets, i see no reason for them to get more money out of me for a small amount of tethering. Especially if I've never come close to using even 3/4 of the data my plans allow.
any other answers out there, minus the self-righteous undertones?

I think you found your answer buddy. You're running a non final build that isn't out yet and we all knew this was going to happen. It's like saying hey I stole a car before it was released and I want to use a pay feature for free.. Can't get much support buddy.
Aside from the "buddy" stuff, that was the kind of answer I'm looking for. Makes perfect sense and I had a suspicion it was something like that.
Why does everyone talk down to everyone in here? Honest questions deserve honest answers, no preaching necessary.
cstrifee999, i appreciate your input. thanks!
I find it so funny that a lot of the same people that are rooting, loading roms, and tethering are now all snotty about it with the little "well you're stealing buddy, its unapproved, youre not holding it right, blah blah blah I'm a dirty whore" bs. That said I have still been tethering using the old methods and haven't been redirected. Search around and see if it still works for you.G Good luck.

To be completely honest, I do not support this attitude eeither even though I am one who was just guilty of it. This is just what everything is turning into. When people ask questions that have been answered days ago (no offence in any way to OP, just trying to make a point) by the person giving us information, we tend to be annoyed be people who don't know the answer to these things because we think it is obvious and we've already answered questions on it several times. And another reason that we have so much of this is just that SO MANY threads have been made about whether or not someone could tether or why it's not working. Personally, I visit these forums several times a day because I have no life and I guess I just got sick of seeing thread after thread after thread on this subject. I apologize for my attitude
You might try the workaround that was used for the official wifi tether where you disable and re-enable 3G during a tether.
Also you can try going to the wireless tether website and download the experimental 3.0 pre10 version. That was how I got mine to work. It'll have a yellow icon.

Get the TBH 3G application patch.
It changes some redirection parameters in the NVRAM.
It works. Using it now.

I'm just sarcastic so my tone sometimes seems inappropriate. Not to defend the people on here the jump all over others, but some of us have been asked the same question hundreds of times multiple times a day. It's not your fault or any poster of a thread that asks a question. I myself have realized I am less patient. I guess the more you know about a subject you just assume everyone has a base knowledge and that if they don't some people treat others as "lower beings" or something. So basically going to XDA is like jumping into a shark tank... Sometimes you come out missing an arm.. lol

Very well put and I agree with your feelings completely. It gets very tiring to see so many threads on the same topic
I post very infrequently, but read at least once a day. And yes you do find a threads about the same questions in here. But for me it helps, it allows me to find what I am looking for easier. The more posts the more hits you get back.
Just another point of view.

Is this confirmed to work on the 588 release of gingerbread? I had it working on my 2.2.1, but I haven't tried it on the new release.

It never worked for me on 573 or 588. However, there are others that claim success with it. It seems as though it is hit or miss.
As a matter of fact, the first time I flashed 573, wireless tether worked. When I flashed the patch, it stopped working.

It works intermittently
I'm running the TBH NVRAM hack and it works for me. Make sure you have the 3.0-pre12 wifi tether app. I have noticed that occasionally i lose tether so toggling airplane mode seems to fix it. Good luck.
The stance that AT&T and Verizon(aka Baby Bell's) are taking with tethering is the same crud cable companies tried to pull by saying you cant have a router with multiple computers attached w/o paying them for it. It's more of the same old telcos trying to return to their glory years driven by monopoly business plans. We don't have to pay them to tether. It's a hardware feature and they don't own the hardware. They charge for data plans. We pay for the the data plans. We can use the data plan however the heck we want. They will lose this battle just like they did with wireline service.

[Bounty] Implement "Epic 4G-like" Wimax settings into NS4G ($165)

ICS has fixed this issue.
BUMP.. for a good cause
Come on guys... thought yall was the notorious hackers of XDA, OEM's can't stand yall
the last time i took on a 100 dollar bounty i got shafted..
but might wanna talk to dreamsforgotten as hes a master of frameworks and has both phones as well
I have taken the WiMax apps, etc files, and lib files from the epic, when I try to edit wimax in the hidden menu it fc's (WiMax_RC and WiMax_Config).

im glad im not the only one that wants these options! i've done the same thing and gotten the same results.
Bounty, ha, we probably have another great scam. I would love to work on it, but like shabby said, the last time he got screwed, and I was originally used as the scapegoat.

Just strapped for cash since im out visiting family in florida atm by myself (plane tickets and taxis rip you off)=corp greed and hense why our nation is in debt....Anyways.. Anyone else live out in florida? Android Party? lol Anyways im bored out of my mind in this hotel and about to hit the beach. BUT for now mark me as $20 unless told otherwise. I know some of you have been burned but im not a chump and I plan on keeping it that way. Only if I knew how to develop some more...

*EDIT*I will not be taking extra donations.. i feel that may complicate things. see the OP for updates. i will be only using my own bounty.. tho i will be sure to include a direct donation link to whoever gets this done for us. so you'll be able to donate afterwards.*EDIT*
i was an evo user and saw how many people claimed to want to donate for aosp wimax.. and many did.. but many didnt. lots of empty promises. i know this thread will reach nowhere near that scale as what im asking for isnt even important to 98% of users.. but just saying.
i get how a lot of these bounty threads end up being bad news.. i just dont know how else to get this done. im not a dev.. just a cdma enthusiast. i've tried dumping the phone via various tools(cdma ws, qpst, etc) which only leads to the phone rebooting, so i assume im hitting unreadable addresses... ive backed up every parition(that i know of) on the phone and sifted thru hex to find reference to the wimax. i found mention of the wifi and bt mac addresses but no wimax reference. ive blindly added the epic 4g framework and wimax apks hoping it'll "just work". i've extracted every file off the phone that references wimax.. but nothing that references exact settings. i've been an active poster in every single wimax thread to do with the nexus. ive been active on freenode since the day i've gotten my phone looking for others interested. i've gone thru every method i could think of. offering $$ is my last hope. ive tried to do this myself.. im hoping someone can pick up where i've left off.
I'm working in my rom release, word bounty picks my ears up lol but I rather get the update out to those waiting first. If you still need n me to look at it after, I might be able to see. I really wanted to get the 4g quick panel toggle in place first but we shall see

my apologies to start casting doubt, i was merely making a joke.. guys take my word for it autoprime has been in the irc channel trying to crack this for a while and talking with a few others including myself. if anyone wants this stuff working its him.

thank you for your interest i'll be sure to keep you posted. there's not much wimax development in the States.. we're some of the few that can take advantage of the hardware.. i'd love to see it not go to waste!!
Glad you took the initiative to start this thread!
Curious (and maybe for anyone else reading), what is/are the main hurdle(s) in getting a 4G toggle to work? I've been following the issue since the ns4g dropped, but realized I don't know the actual reason. .. beyond just needing the wimax api

well my goal is to get far more than just the toggle to work.. but i feel that anyone diving into the wimax code to get my bounty sorted will figure out how to get the toggle to work as well
see this thread for info about the nexus toggle issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15320672
seems the devs cant figure out the correct call functions.. tho maybe its more than that.
oh.. and to anyone that wants a quick wimax on/off. just use an app like anycut(or any shortcut app) to make a wimax 4g settings shortcut on your main screen. its not pretty.. but its much faster than going thru the settings each time.

and thanks for the backup shabby i knew u were messin but I totally get others concern. this is the internet after all.
The closest I came to getting the toggle to work systemui booted just fine, the toggle didn't activate the wifi antenna but when I did in settings the toggle showed the change. Know what sucks, that zip was on my sd, and I hard reset so I lost the secret recipe. I'm itching to get this there are permission issues just calling the classes in the wimax apk which usa where the calls were moved

Maybe you can start a pledge section too to sweeten the pot. The pledges are promises made in this thread that people that will donate to the winning developer (that the OP is not responsible for...) Of course, all the dev has is the word of the poster....
Thank you for starting this thread.
I'll definitely vouch for autoprime. Helped me out a lot on some other issues. Very patient.
*bump*
You place too muchconcern on the bounty id do it and be proud of the work regardless if I got paid
