Hi everyone! I'm brand new to the Android scene, so please be patient with me. I bought a Samsung Vibrant to develop on, but really didn't want to buy a monthly plan (was just going to use it over wifi). Turns out though, with the recent JI6 update, I can't get it unless I have an actual data plan (I called T-mobile to confirm). They said it'll be the same situation when Froyo eventually comes out.
SO... now I'm asking the hackers! Is there a way to manually install the updates via wifi only? Or should I abandon my quest for a wifi-only Android device and take this thing back before my 30 days are up?
Jesus Christ dude just take a look at the Vibrant development section.

Wow calm down, he said he is new to this bear with him. Instead of of harassing him you could have answered and then this thread would of been death by now.
Anyways, you can update to the JI6 though something called ODIN, the forum under development has many tutorials of how to do it, all you need is ODIN and the Samsung Vibrant drivers, which are on development forum on the "bible thread" .
I hope that helps.
Here is a video to give you a basic idea of how to use ODIN again don't use the files shown there because they are outdated.

eh, i understand fed's frustration.. all these people flooding these forums with the same convoluted questions can take its toll.. but the OP is an admitted newbie.

You could call up T-Mobile, have them activate the Internet for one month, then close it after you get the update. Just be sure not to sign a contract.

You don't have a plan with T-Mobile period, or you don't have a plan that includes data?
If you have a plan with T-Mobile even without data you WILL get the OTA, I did and a few others did without a data plan. Also I'm on a prepaid plan, I got the update notification while wifi was on.
If you don't have a plan with T-Mobile at all then I'm not sure if you would get the OTA or not. My guess is you won't.
Also as the others have said, you could go to the development section and look at some of the threads that will help you get the update without waiting for the OTA notice.

If I'm ignorant, please forgive me. But let's just say that the rumored Android 2.1 update is ready next week ... or even the week after that. How is the update to be distributed?
On my G1, it believe it was distributed as an OTA update. Considering I bought my N1 from Google (without subsidy - so t-mobile thinks I have a G1, currently) and Google's N1 site is kind of bare, and that I never had an option to register my phone/phone number combination with anyone ... how would I even knkow when/where to get it if not for these forums?

A friend of mine bought a G1 unlocked and uses it as his main phone without notifying his network provider and still receives OTA updates.
Hopefully, we'll get a notify to download the ota update...
I wonder if we will get official updates to add the flash 10.1, Multi-touch enabling and so fourth directly from Google/HTC.
Or maybe its how HTC did with Hero, I remember when an update came out it would be posted on the htc site along with a link and instructions on how to install them.
Good god, I can only hope not. I can't even imagine the complaints from people trying to install their own updates. Google would be asking to shot themselves in the foot.
Have you read have the complaints on the Nexus forum. Half of them can't figure how to turn the phone on and the other half shouldn't even be using a 'smartphone.' Sorry, if I'm being patronizing but that is why the iPhone 'works.' A 5 year old kid and use that thing.
Not an applefan boy. I love my Nexus One. I'm just saying it wouldn't be ideal. Every phone as an ip address to the internet so I'm sure they would somehow send it that way?
Doesn't the phone do an update check? then the phone downloads it, as opposed to it being "sent" to the phones...

Yes. The OTA update is really your phone checking for a new release and then downloading it and installing it if it's available. There is no push.

Yes you are being patronizing....Nokia give their updates both over the air and via PC. The choice of download and install is up to the user. Even via pc is straight forward any 5 year old could do it,in fact any fool could do it.....even you!
yeah, I maybe a fool that can update my phone but I'm pretty sure my 5 year old neice is not likely able to and brick her little hello kitty phone and rant and rave on the nexus forum of why the phone isn't booting up.
Have you been to Best Buy and listen to the people paying their money at the Geek Squad at the help station? Sure, there might be plenty of peole who are tech savy but the joe six pack....yeah sure.

The more and more time that goes by, the more and more I want a G2 when it comes out honestly. Sumsung really dropped the ball here and its going to leave a bad taste in a lot of people's minds for a long time...

You know what, I think Samsung is 50 percent to Blame. The other 50 percent is T-Mobile. T-MOBILE...simply does not support their phones.
Buying the G2 will be the same damn story. Sure it will come with 2.2, but as soon as 3.0 comes along, every other carrier will have it months before T-Mobile releases it on the G2, and you will cry and complain "the more and more I want Verizon."
I honestly think the problem is T-Mobile, and not so much the handset manufacturers.
tmobile is throwing Samsung under the bus, I got this back from a message I sent to Tmobiles facebook a bit ago..
Robert,
We understand your interest on updates Samsung is working on one and as soon as we have any more information on this we will communicate it.
.. notice they say that Samsung is working on one, I did ask about 2.2 though and not the gps fix.

Honestly, my biggest regret was leaving at&t. I left because I wasn't interested in an iphone, I noticed no good new WM apps were coming along, and I wanted a 3.5 mm headphone jack on my phone. The nexus filled all those needs so when it was released I jumped ship to t-mobile. I found out the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
I still have no idea why people say T-Mobiles customer support is better than AT&T; from everything I've seen it isn't even close.
Someone else posted on here before about T-Mobiles BB getting upgraded to V.5 not too long ago.. they have 6 out or it's close to release. T-Mobile does lack in this "Software/Firmware" Update department. They have some decent phones but don't support them enough.
It's amazing, when the G1 came out, yes it was the first Android phone but updates rolled out pretty quick. I know it was stock "Vanilla" Android but updates were addressed in a timely manor. But now they have the My Touch, My Touch Slide and Cliq series and now the Galaxy S phone.

So what its perfectly ok for other Galaxy S phones that haven't been out as long as the Vibrant to be getting their updates, but not us? Honestly, I really think it has to do a lot with TMO and not Sammy. Luckily, I've rooted and running a custom ROM and Voodoo fix. I also know that doing that is not for everyone though.
The Captivate came out what like 3 days after the Vibrant? Maybe tmo and Samsung are waiting to see how the update goes on the Captivate. It wont matter anyways we could get it tomorrow and people will still complain that it's not 2.2 or their phone is still not fast enough or some other bullcrap.

Your joking right? First almost 2 1/2 months. Second the others all got a update as mentioned.
All other phones with 1ghz are running froyo, even a hd2 without android has it.lom
I vote we get /b/ to start ****. Maybe then we might get some movement from T-Mo and Samsung... just me? >.>
not that it will do anything to Tmobile but I've decided that whoever gets 2.2 on the Galaxy S device first is who I will be switching to. If its Tmobile then I won't be going anywhere, but if another carrier can get it out before Tmobile see ya.
Tmobile launched this device First int he US there is no reason they should not be the first to release the OS update even if it takes them till November
I do agree that they need to support their phones better. But at least TMO isn't forcing bing down our throats either.
I come from the Blackberry side of the fence and I remember when 5.0 devices were new last year it took forever for TMO to release an update for the 9700, and that original release was filled with bugs. I finally gave up on waiting for them and simply downloaded another carrier's release. Easy to do on that platform.
I like the Vibrant for the most part. Yes it has bugs; yes it's quality needs to be improved. Yes the GPS kind of sucks. But what other high-end phone out there doesn't have issues these days? I'm sure the G2 will have them as well.

I always thought the IMIE was recorded before hand. I bought my vibrant without a contract and I do not have a data plan, also, as far as tmobile is concerned, i may still be using a sidekick.
would this affect my update status.
one more thing, i dont have a data plan, but im almost always on wifi.
CAN I STILL GET THE UPDATE?
My replacement Vibrant is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I'll make sure to call them so that they can update my IMEI, if this is true.
And it is IMEI, not IMIE.
I almost didn't know what the threat title was referring to.

T-Mo's systems generally update the IMEI automatically, but there is more than system that reads that info - The billing system is one which doesn't automatically update, but really matter for anything. I was a TMo rep and I did see our other tools be incorrect, but this was very rare - I can only remember 3-4 times in the many years I was with the company, and usually this was just because there wasn't enough time for the system to update. This takes 24-48 hours.
Bottom line: you will still get the update and the op would have too if he had waited, because the rep more than likely just checked the billing system IMEI info.

don't worry too much b1wyatt. t-mo's doing this update in staggered waves. it's one of those things where you'll get it when you get it. i know ppl have already mentioned ODIN but there's Kies mini for the Vibrant as well. it seems sure fire if you've got a 32 bit OS (not so sure for those on x64 systems as some have complained that Kies mini won't see their phones ). i'm still kinda debating whether to use ODIN or Kies mini on my bf's phone for the update (i think Kies is safer).

You may want to edit the title of your post as a result of this revelation and/or put your update at the top of the OP. It's entirely possible people are not going to read your entire post to get to the update portion that clears this up and they'll go off into some panic and use ODIN to flash the wrong rom and brick their device (it seems people just flash the first thing they find recently).
Glad everything got sorted out for you

But this whole downgrade to being considered a "Low Activity Device" is kinda messing with me a little...
I kinda really don't like it, lol...
If there is anyone else with me, let's all email the Super Mods, and see if we can bring it back
Please,
Taylore
The sad thing is that there has been more activity in here the past month than there was before, and it then gets the downgrade
As much as I hate to agree with this, we are a low activity device. Other than the general chatter about upgrading to froyo, we have a couple of ROMs and kernels that haven't been updated in quite some time, a gingerbread theme and some Ticker tweaks. Compared to other devices that is low activity.
We would need to kick up the development to really justify getting it moved.

That's IF we get Froyo. It's been a couple months now, and we still haven't heard legitimate evidence that they are releasing froyo for us.
I have no idea why Verizon hasn't pushed that update out. It's incredible that they could just let the Continuum people hang like that. I'm going to talk to my media relations contact (I'm a product journalist by trade) and see what they say off the record. I'm sure it will go something like this "No comment at this time".

"Legacy & Low Activity Devices", Wow.
That's low. But I guess it's the sign of the times.
I purchased my Continuum in January and I'm so fed up with samsung. RSS feeds don't work at all. Very dissappointed. I've decided not to purchase a single samsung phone/tablet product in the future. Lots of other makers that I see updates happening. 2 of my kids have Fascinates and they love them but updates are really slow coming out.
If it wasn't for you guys working on it and making it better, I would have canned the phone. Thanks for all your efforts and I hope we'll get 2.2 soon.

I've noticed this unlimited data plan loophole mentioned a few times. Does this mean that those of us who are grandfathered in with the old data plans have a way of getting out of our contracts due to this change? I activated my Continuum in March.
But now that we are seeing some Froyo action, I'm not as desperate to go in a different direction. The thought of speeding her up and de-bloating is pretty exciting. Also I love the ticker even though it's only like 10% useable for what I do. The ability to answer or ignore calls and see the time no matter what I'm doing is great. Yes I know any non-continuum phone could do the same with a pop-up window or whatever but that permanent little section of soft-controls is just so cool! Thought the real reason I like it is the unlimited possibilities for customization...which so far has been non-existent. Every day I look at that ticker and muse over it's possibilities...thinking how nice it would be if the little notifiers mapped to apps I actually use or how awesome it would be to pop some 1x1 widgets down there.... Is it irrational in Aug 2011 to still hope for things everyone dreamed of when this thing was released last November?
I held on to Palm for way too long too....Is being loyal to a gadget for what it should be a fools errand that will just leave me sad and bitter in the end?

I've noticed this unlimited data plan loophole mentioned a few times. Does this mean that those of us who are grandfathered in with the old data plans have a way of getting out of our contracts due to this change? I activated my Continuum in March.
But now that we are seeing some Froyo action, I'm not as desperate to go in a different direction. The thought of speeding her up and de-bloating is pretty exciting. Also I love the ticker even though it's only like 10% useable for what I do. The ability to answer or ignore calls and see the time no matter what I'm doing is great. Yes I know any non-continuum phone could do the same with a pop-up window or whatever but that permanent little section of soft-controls is just so cool! there is no loophole...verizon grandfathered in all smartphone users who had unlimited data (3g or 4g) for the near future (they can always change **** down the road if they want)
but for the time being u can upgrade on contract or activate new devices from 3g to 4g or 4g to 3g and keep ur same plan no restrictions (although 4g to 3g would burn ur 4g sim after 24 hours and ud need to get a new one)
Shouldnt all this activity and the Froyo Update bump us back up out of the low activity section? Just saying....
