Recently Tmobile finally started filtering their data and are attempting to prevent all users no matter the ROM or software on the phones from tethering their laptop to the phone.
As soon as you tether and try to view a webpage on your laptop, you will get redirected to a sales page, where TMobile tells you that you need to purchase an additional feature for $15 USD a month. This is outrageous considering you already pay for a certain ammount of data per month, and as long as you remain within that they are just being greedy and are nickle and diming us.
The workarounds / bypass are detailed here:

Using CyanogenMod 9 I tether just fine...
This just started today for me Ive tethered since cupcake just fine.. There are other reports too using Cyanogenmod or any other ROM will not help you when this rolls out to your area.

Cm9 here too, still blocked though
We ran into this problem several months ago but were using the LG Optimus T phone for tethering. It ran fine for a day or so and then we started getting the Tmobile message screen to upgrade. We had plenty of gigs left and couldnt figure out why we could no longer tether. We are heading on vacation next month and this will hopefully help us bypass Tmobile's junk. Haven't tried our Galaxy S2's yet so we may be worried all for nothing..
UPDATE: Tethering works great on the S2 thru Tmobile,.,,Hotspot does not. Got a screen on my phone for Tmobile to sign up for it monthly when I searched the Help link...laptop is asking for a Network Key to access the Hotspot...
Try the ClockworkMod tethering app.

HOW DO I TUNNEL!?!?!??!
I didn't have any trouble using USB or wifi tethering on my bone stock galaxy nexus, but they might not have rolled this system out back then. This is definitely good information though, the wife wants to use this when we're out on business.

You need a Virtual Private Network or VPN. I can't post links so you'll have to look it up yourself.
So I have a question for you guys...
I understand that I need to switch the user agent on my laptop when tethering, but what about when I tether to something like a Roku box or a Playstation 3?
The reason why only some people are having problems with the tethering is because T-Mobile is including hidden APN settings in the new software updates and the software on new devices. These hidden APNs helps T-Mobile detect tethering. Go to this thread to see what I mean, also you can PM the OP and he can tell you exactly what he had to do, I think he had to decompile the framwork, apk or framwork.jar one and remove them from there I can not remember exactly.
Edit:
GROGG88 said:
I will gladly discuss it here... Both Elegancia 3.0.0 and version B of my rom are using resources from 3.32.401.105 in order to achieve two functions:
1. Unlock APNs
2. Provide leedroid tweak compatibility
The only problem with this is the fact that they are no longer "true tmous builds". I refer to them as "franken-builds"... I have not gone through all the differences between framework-res, systemui, framework.jar, services.jar, etc... but I can tell you that certain small bugs have been reported with the xe build that others have reported as fixed in the official tmous version.
The APNs are written to apns.xml within the framework-res.apk. This is why we used XE components to unlock the APNs at first. You can distinguish what roms are built this way by the framework version:
TMOUS: 20120412.202737
XE: 20120321.232857
My unlocking mod is the stock TMOUS framework-res.apk, but it has the apns.xml from XE. This ensures that the rest of the rom stays in tact and that no bugs will be induced by mixed resources... I've also included this mod as an option during install on version A of my rom.

Just so I am clear...the way T-Mobile is doing this is by seeing the user agent of the browser. Since I tether my Galaxy Tab Wifi to my Gnex from time to time I should be in the clear correct? Since I am not using a browser on a laptop, but rather on another Android device.
Thanks for the post, will try this out
Wait...so what if I use a desktop user agent from a mobile browser to grab the full page. That's going to get blocked as well...?
I got that problem with my new Galaxy S2... luckily the rom I flashed took care of that problem.

Just tested. It works on almost all of the UserAgents becauses Chrome/IE/FireFox.. Hell IPad even works. You should be fine for now. I hope they stick to this solution instead of going to more preventive measures because this is easily bypassed.. My Skype/Steam/Trillian/AIM/etc all still connect perfectly even without bypassing because it's only blocking Desktop useragents. The stupidest part of this is requesting the desktop version of sites like on the Google Chrome Android browser results in the blocked page as well.. :|

None of your updates have been from T-Mobile. All those OTA updates came straight from Google. One of the things that ended with the nexus s was that the carriers weren't allowed to really touch the phone at all. As such, T-Mo never sold it in their stores. You could get it at Best Buy, etc, but not at official stores.
I believe this only works if you bought the device from T-mobile right? since i can tether on my iPhone just fine (althought on 2G/EDGE) I can't confirm it with android though, but if they are ruling this all over the network we're gonna have a bad time.

Yeah I'm pretty sure this is with T-Mo-sourced devices specifically (as in, you got it at the T-Mo store or it has the T-Mo logo on the phone itself).
Also, nice South Park reference. ".....you're gonna have a BAD time!"
Hi Guys!
I've just picked up a Nexus 7 32gb 3g and it's amazing to say the least. I can't believe for something just over £200 I have a full up to date android experience with premium hardware. Anyway what I was wondering was could I use this device to replace my recently broken Samsung Galaxy S1 (i9000). By which I mean make calls over 3g cellular. I want to pop in a contract sim and just use the minutes and texts of that and I was wondering whether it was possible?
I've done my research and apparently it's as simple as just copying over the default phone apk and it should work although I'm a bit skeptical as I've only seen one thread about. So what do I need to do to make cellular calls on the Nexus 7?
Regards,
Enya
P.S. I don't mind holding a 7" tablet to my face to make calls, I'd probably just use hands free anyway, and I don't mind rooting or flashing roms.
sorry for the off topic
but where did you get your 32gb 3g from - as ive only seen pc world, currys etc selling the wifi only for 200 pound...
would also like to know about the sim card and making calls / texts with the 3g model
thanks

I am also looking for an answer to this question, i can't find any answers, would you be able to try the phone apk and report back. I am not sure if you need rot access to do that.
Also interested, if only because the carrier that my SIM comes from occasionally requires me to make a call to their automated attendant when their online management tool isn't working.
Metaphorically speaking, Oh and yeah I'm probably going to try the phone.apk although I was wondering if anyone has had any experience or anything?
Oh and to put the phone.apk app back on I think you'll either need root access or ABD, but don't take my word for it, I'm no expert lol,
Uh-oh, just read that the N7 3G support won't be in AOSP for now because they weren't able to licence the GSM stack for AOSP
Wait, so you can't just push it into a system app i=in adb by extracting it from another phone that's running AOSP?

No idea. As of yet the only AOSP phone with 4.2 is the GNex (Nexus 4 is not in AOSP yet either due to the same licensing issue).
And unless devs find a clever workaround, N73G isn't going to get the same scope of ROMs as the wi-fi version until they sort out the licensing.
Any results yet?
enya123101, did you try the phone.apk ? I'm really eager to find out if the NExus 7 can make phone calls and I can't find answers anywhere
please let us know
Please don't keep us in suspense. This data is what I need to determine between the Nexus 7 or the 10. I find it odd that this question is not being ask more on the net. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1958686 is the only other thread really that's asking this question and not just some random mentioning of it in a sea of Nexus 7 threads out there.
Thanks again for being the guinea pig.
you can not just push phone.apk in fact your device ALREADY has phone.APK and if you try to push it then you will receive the message "you are replacing a system app.
the reason you cant USE or SEE it is because of the way our framework.res is compiled and it is not set as a phone device it is set as tablet among other settings that are different as well.
its not that easy but hopefully once its out in full force then developers will figure out a way perhaps with custom roms that allow it.
any info yet
like the others real interested to see some results

I'm definitely going to buy the Google Edition of S4.
I know they have the same hardware as the rest of the US Variants but I'm just wondering if Touchwiz STOCK rooted ROMs can be ported to the Google Edition.
I will be using AOSP/CM/AOKP ROM anyway but I just want to know just incase I want to test out TW.
Thanks
of course they can, and the other way around is also true, AOSP roms will be ported to TW versions of the phone
See the thing is. There are more devs who will work to port aosp onto the gs4. I can't say the same for devs working to port touchwiz onto google edition. It seems like everyone here tries to get rid of touchwiz
i haven't checked any roms lately, but if there are any existing TW roms, i'm pretty sure it'll be very easy to port them to the google edition since it's the same phone
No.
It will work but it won't work 100%

Truth. There's no "pretty much" about it in this case. It's the same phone. Shouldn't even require much porting, if any at all. Just look at all the tmo, sprint, and i9505 ROMs we've been flashing - no porting. No different here.

You guys have no clue if it's identical. They could change one tiny thing internally and mess it all up, which I could see them doing
What maybe different is most of the sensors maybe disabled like in the HTC GE version.

4G LTE
I just got a 4S I9505 and can't get LTE only H+.
(AT&T says it's because it's not AT&T branded)
I guess they'll try to add my IMEI to their data base in the next couple of weeks.
I wonder if the Google phones will have the same issue?
The info I've seen listed AT&T and T Mobile, so maybe not.

Yes, I've changed the APN settings.
Problem is AT&T doesn't recognize the new IMEI.
I put the SIM in a old Inspire (using a adapter).
When I logged into my account I could see my three lines and phones (2 Vivids & the Inspire).
But as soon as the SIM is back in the S 4 my account updates and the Inspire picture is replaced a general picture.
I have even tried to change the phone info on line. I selected Samsung but the i9505 isn't listed.
I'm thinking about using the IMEI from a broken vivid I have, but suspect it would be noticed.

This is one of the things with getting off network devices. Like my carrier only allows their devices to use the LTE network. Any IMEI in the network that is not theirs goes to get on LTE.
Also don't talk about changing your IMEI. It is Illegal.

The t-mobile one you can uninstall. I don't have that one on my phone. The sprintDM and verizon backup wouldn't be such a big deal if it was just on the phone but the fact that it runs in the background is the annoying part for me. I'll probably end up needing that Verizon one as I plan on swapping my VZ and Tmobile sims from time to time. I hope 5.1 allows me to just swap the sim in instead of factory resetting the phone.

Wow, people. You should really listen to yourselves. When you have a device that works on multiple carriers, there are ALWAYS going to be carrier specific libraries in order to make things work. Yes, there's a VZWAPN APK. Yes, there's a SprintDM APK, there are also US Cellular-specific APKs in there, and there's probably some very T-Mobile and AT&T specific code if you want to dig for it. Christ, people. You have a phone that works on just about every network in the history of the world. Do you think that all happens just like magic without any involvement from any carrier at all?
And for those of you outside the US, clearly Google doesn't want to have to manage two separate ROMs for the Nexus 6 just over a few APKs, so yeah, your ROM is going to have APKs for US based carriers in it too. Somehow, I think you'll survive.
Come on, now. I know y'all are smarter than this.
I think its funny people are calling it bloat. Like its bing maps, skype or the samsung S apps.

We are smarter than that. That's why we freeze it. . It's just one of the things friends ask me is. Why do you like nexus phones and why should I switch? I tell them that nexus phones don't have all that bloatware carrier phones come with. And while it's still free of bloatware for the most part, I hope it's not a trend in the wrong direction. If they can install carrier apps depending on what carrier Sim, why weren't they able to keep these apps carrier specific? It's not THAT big of a deal for now but like I said I hope it doesn't go in the wrong direction.
My theory is that eventually the upcoming Google wireless service will be compatible across all 4 carriers. Imagine never having a coverage issue because you have a phone that works on all 4 concurrently with one service.
We are having 3 official versions of the android 5.1 showing up. LMY47D, LMY47E, LMY47I. Some say they are carrier specific, some say they are not, and others have no idea what is going on. So, let’s discuss all the versions here and why some may or may not think that each one is carrier specific.
My main questions to those that say they are carrier specific is, I though Nexus 6 was not carrier locked and can work on all 4 carriers just by swapping the sim card. If that is the case, the how can we have carrier specific updates? I guess in theory it can be related to the sim that we have in our phones, so then by changing the sim from one carrier to another we will need to/offered the other software version?
There was a thread pointing to a twitter from someone at T-Mobile that explained this. As I understand it, Google changed the way it handles the minor network tweaking carriers need to make for their network and SIMs. Any OS would work with any phone but the carrier specific version will work slightly better. They can't make any changes to apps or the OS, just some network parameters. I'm oversimplifying but that's what I got out of it.

hmm, i need to find that.
I'll assume because of the N6's "all carrier compatibility" they have released carrier specific optimizations in their different builds. Unfortunately, and in my opinion, Google caved with the N6 to get better sales. It is what it is and I'm just thankful I have a phone that I can still do as I please with it. It would be nice, and thoughtful, if the Goog would release official information on what the heck they are doing with these different builds.... is that so hard?!
So does anyone know which one matches which carrier?

if its carrier specific, D is sprint, E is verizon, M is t- mobile.
edit, since canada is getting version D right now, D must be just general. Who knows. lol
So nothing specific to AT&T yet? Just curious to try a carrier specific one and see if data is faster.

Not so much. 47e brought in new camera proprietary binaries too so it isn't just carrier specific

Can't be carrier specific, I am on 3 Uk and have the D variant.

I would weigh in and say that if a carrier makes a change needing a new build, it gets submitted to Google, tested and the changes only affect those with that carrier, likely due to SIM detection.
The fact that the phone has radios for all the carriers means that this can be possible, tweaks to a radio or band your phone may not use won't affect you ... and at the same time Google can toss in some tweaks across the board for all of us. I suppose that what makes it confusing is that while any of them can be flashed, they'll only push out the one to a carrier specific imei set, like E to Verizon.
For the normal user, they get an update that makes their specific network functionality better, and the others are not pushed for that, but may get the overall tweaks in the next update to their phone in general, or if before that there is a carrier requested tweak for them that requires a build release.
But we here, see all of this because we have that "wanting to have the latest build" mentality, the questions arise.

What was suggested was that every build would work but a specific variant would be slightly better. For example m would be better for t mobile but any variant would work. For carriers other than sprint, verizon and t mobile I don't know if there'd be any real difference.
Has anyone on ATT received a 5.1 OTA?
If so, which one?

I knew something seemed different about the camera. Photos in low light looked better to me.

Exactly. But some will never admit it
The real question is this:
Can someone on T-mobile who is on 47D or 47E see if they get an OTA update to 47M?
If the builds are carrier specific, would google push them based off the the SIM or the IEMI? It would have to be the SIM right? For people that purchased a phone through Google/Motorola and are using it on Verizon. Or switch networks, whatever the case may be.

Admit what? If it it carrier specific then explain why E has Camera updates that D does not? What does that have to do with the carrier?
If everything was the same except for the Radio.img then I'd buy the carrier only thing, but there are more that's changed.

i edited my post. D is not Sprint. It must be general version since Canada is getting it right now.

Because its not true, then why did i get the 47D version in the Netherlands Europe. Btw i also have Sprint and Verizon files in my firmware, so that tells me they are universal roms that contain specific (network) optimisations that will be triggered when using a specific carrier.

According to the T-Mobile Support page, the requirements to upgrade to 47M is that your current build must be LRX22C, so I'm guessing that those with 47D or 47E won't be able to get an OTA update to 47M.
I'm on T-Mobile with 47D, and I didn't receive any OTA update as of now.
