We are having 3 official versions of the android 5.1 showing up. LMY47D, LMY47E, LMY47I. Some say they are carrier specific, some say they are not, and others have no idea what is going on. So, let’s discuss all the versions here and why some may or may not think that each one is carrier specific.
My main questions to those that say they are carrier specific is, I though Nexus 6 was not carrier locked and can work on all 4 carriers just by swapping the sim card. If that is the case, the how can we have carrier specific updates? I guess in theory it can be related to the sim that we have in our phones, so then by changing the sim from one carrier to another we will need to/offered the other software version?
There was a thread pointing to a twitter from someone at T-Mobile that explained this. As I understand it, Google changed the way it handles the minor network tweaking carriers need to make for their network and SIMs. Any OS would work with any phone but the carrier specific version will work slightly better. They can't make any changes to apps or the OS, just some network parameters. I'm oversimplifying but that's what I got out of it.

hmm, i need to find that.
I'll assume because of the N6's "all carrier compatibility" they have released carrier specific optimizations in their different builds. Unfortunately, and in my opinion, Google caved with the N6 to get better sales. It is what it is and I'm just thankful I have a phone that I can still do as I please with it. It would be nice, and thoughtful, if the Goog would release official information on what the heck they are doing with these different builds.... is that so hard?!
So does anyone know which one matches which carrier?

if its carrier specific, D is sprint, E is verizon, M is t- mobile.
edit, since canada is getting version D right now, D must be just general. Who knows. lol
So nothing specific to AT&T yet? Just curious to try a carrier specific one and see if data is faster.

Can't be carrier specific, I am on 3 Uk and have the D variant.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
I would weigh in and say that if a carrier makes a change needing a new build, it gets submitted to Google, tested and the changes only affect those with that carrier, likely due to SIM detection.
The fact that the phone has radios for all the carriers means that this can be possible, tweaks to a radio or band your phone may not use won't affect you ... and at the same time Google can toss in some tweaks across the board for all of us. I suppose that what makes it confusing is that while any of them can be flashed, they'll only push out the one to a carrier specific imei set, like E to Verizon.
For the normal user, they get an update that makes their specific network functionality better, and the others are not pushed for that, but may get the overall tweaks in the next update to their phone in general, or if before that there is a carrier requested tweak for them that requires a build release.
But we here, see all of this because we have that "wanting to have the latest build" mentality, the questions arise.

What was suggested was that every build would work but a specific variant would be slightly better. For example m would be better for t mobile but any variant would work. For carriers other than sprint, verizon and t mobile I don't know if there'd be any real difference.

Exactly. But some will never admit it
The real question is this:
Can someone on T-mobile who is on 47D or 47E see if they get an OTA update to 47M?
If the builds are carrier specific, would google push them based off the the SIM or the IEMI? It would have to be the SIM right? For people that purchased a phone through Google/Motorola and are using it on Verizon. Or switch networks, whatever the case may be.

Admit what? If it it carrier specific then explain why E has Camera updates that D does not? What does that have to do with the carrier?
If everything was the same except for the Radio.img then I'd buy the carrier only thing, but there are more that's changed.

Because its not true, then why did i get the 47D version in the Netherlands Europe. Btw i also have Sprint and Verizon files in my firmware, so that tells me they are universal roms that contain specific (network) optimisations that will be triggered when using a specific carrier.

According to the T-Mobile Support page, the requirements to upgrade to 47M is that your current build must be LRX22C, so I'm guessing that those with 47D or 47E won't be able to get an OTA update to 47M.
I'm on T-Mobile with 47D, and I didn't receive any OTA update as of now.

That depends on the speed of your wifi or 3G connection. It is like downloading any other file off the internet (wifi will probably be faster).

It forces your phone to check Google's servers for an update. But, if your IMEI isn't in the approved pool that the update is being sent to, it will NOT cause your phone to get the update ahead of time. IMO, the checkin code is worthless as you will almost always see the update file posted here long before your phone will tell you there is an update.

The updates of the operator ones still come from Google, but they're delayed for testing/modification by the networks.

Yes, but I can't find any reason to NOT give the option to manually chceck for updates. I had that option in stock android 2.1 on the Milestone, so it can't be to difficult if Moto Europe lazy devs could do that. Am I missing something or it's just illogical?

Hi Rusty, how do define operator models? I have FRG83D installed! Before that I had FRF91 (Vodafone)! Is my phone still a operator model? In which way does it effect the OTA process?
Unless you've deliberately made the effort to switch to the untouched Google firmware, you'll still have the Voda variant.
What this means is you will receive updates much later than the Google bought handsets, if you tried to install the 2.2.2 update (FRG83G), you'll find that it will fail.

Didn't I already said in my original post that AT&T versions of the phones don't have such options?! I knew Canadian versions have it. Even though two phones carry the same name, the firmware are different and hardware are also slightly different. That applies to both Focus and Captivate.

You yourself said ( and I agree ) there are minor differences of the same model of phones to different carriers. So you're now saying one function from one doesn't apply to the other? Even though some people here post ( and proved ) that there is a way to select between the two bands I'm asking about?
The ROMs are different with settings added or removed per carrier requirement. Diagnostic code may or maynot be the same. What others posted is about using the diagnostic code which you can refer to the sticky thread.

I went through 7 pages of that sticky before posting my question here ( did not go any further as posting my query will illicit specific response than having to go through all the pages ). Found about 3 people asking the same question as I did but no answer.
The issue between you and me is that you keep claiming there is no option in setting the band on either Edge/GSM and 3G on Focus and captivate ( whether it's AT&T or not, standard or custom firmware ) when in fact there is. Whether it's diagnostic or custom firmware is beside the point, I was asking for just that setting.
I'm definitely going to buy the Google Edition of S4.
I know they have the same hardware as the rest of the US Variants but I'm just wondering if Touchwiz STOCK rooted ROMs can be ported to the Google Edition.
I will be using AOSP/CM/AOKP ROM anyway but I just want to know just incase I want to test out TW.
Thanks
of course they can, and the other way around is also true, AOSP roms will be ported to TW versions of the phone
See the thing is. There are more devs who will work to port aosp onto the gs4. I can't say the same for devs working to port touchwiz onto google edition. It seems like everyone here tries to get rid of touchwiz
i haven't checked any roms lately, but if there are any existing TW roms, i'm pretty sure it'll be very easy to port them to the google edition since it's the same phone
No.
It will work but it won't work 100%

Truth. There's no "pretty much" about it in this case. It's the same phone. Shouldn't even require much porting, if any at all. Just look at all the tmo, sprint, and i9505 ROMs we've been flashing - no porting. No different here.

Yes, I've changed the APN settings.
Problem is AT&T doesn't recognize the new IMEI.
I put the SIM in a old Inspire (using a adapter).
When I logged into my account I could see my three lines and phones (2 Vivids & the Inspire).
But as soon as the SIM is back in the S 4 my account updates and the Inspire picture is replaced a general picture.
I have even tried to change the phone info on line. I selected Samsung but the i9505 isn't listed.
I'm thinking about using the IMEI from a broken vivid I have, but suspect it would be noticed.

This is one of the things with getting off network devices. Like my carrier only allows their devices to use the LTE network. Any IMEI in the network that is not theirs goes to get on LTE.
Also don't talk about changing your IMEI. It is Illegal.

Ran a software update check this morning on my Rogers Note3, after my friend mentioned he got KitKat on his Bell S4 on the weekend. Sure enough, 400+MB update was available.
Servers were slow (both my home Wi-Fi and LTE were getting the same speed. Took about an hour to download). Install went smoothly and only took 2-3 minutes. And KitKat it is.
I'm using Nova Launcher, so the only immediately visible change is that all the icons in the status bar are plain white. Otherwise, I perused through the system settings and didn't see much that was different beyond the addition of a "Printing" option under Connections > More networks, and the odd change here and there. However, things do feel smoother and basic stuff like unlocking the device has no lag at all.

I'm not really sure what you mean?
Bell, Rogers and Telus all use the same versions of most phones as what AT&T in the U.S. offer, as their networks share the same spectrum ranges. So when the manufacturer of a phone (Samsung) releases an OS update for an AT&T model phone, all four companies then have access to that and can tweak that update and release it to their customers when they wish. Typically (though not always) that means that all of the companies release updates to their customers around roughly the same time.

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2014/03/17/galaxy-note-3-android-4-4-kitkat-release-fast-pace/
I love the start of the second paragraph apparently no one must have gave At&t the memo about how fast the update was suppose to come out and we're suppose to have the fastest network of course but the slowest upgrades.
Just updated mine. Noticed a massive spike in android OS usage. Did a factory reset and ST card format

Possibly, although there is a fix included for China Unicom carrier by the looks of it. Do they even sell the Pixel in China?
Hopefully this AOSP diff link works:

I think moving forward there will only be unified builds. While this might not add anything for anyone in the US it won't hurt either
So is the latest O or Q? I just got the O update earlier today.

The latest is Q. Unless you are using O2 UK or China Unicom APNs, there is no difference though according to AOSP commits. Radio etc is the same.
Is this new by any chance? I've never noticed it before

No, it's been that way since I took it out of the box.

Do you just mean the side menu in settings? I think that was introduced in 7.0 on the Nexus devices.
For those of you wondering if this is Europe only. No. I am on Sprint towers a fair majority of the time, and this fixed an issue causing data to remain off when flipping between Wifi --> Data. The radios now transition correctly.
I had this issue ever since I first powered up my device. What I read is that this problem had to do with Band 4 which several carriers use (ahem O2 Wireless ahem) I assume in Europe and Canada? Anyway it is fixed for Sprint towers for Band 4 as well.

Are you referring to differences between NMF26O and NMF26Q? Or NDE63? and NMF26Q?

Both. I have had issues with Band 4 until being on NMF26Q, where it was finally fixed.
Facebook camera icon missing in chrome after NMF26Q OTA when trying attach an image to a comment. Assuming it's something with user agent, Firefox and view as desktop works.
Also notice the adaptive brightness is now really "working" to the point it gets annoying make the screen so dark from mid level, preferred how it was.

The fb camera icon is missing on my Nexus 6 with 7.0 too. It's just an fb site fail.

But it's not missing when I request desktop view or load it on Firefox. It was there in nmf26O.

Also broken on my wifes Pixel (sailfish) with NMF26O along with NBD91U shamu. It's just FB temporary borked with Chrome (55 maybe), nothing specifically to do with NMF26Q.

Thanks for the link, I am a pixel China user with ChinaUnicom network, however, I don't use MMS anymore, and there is no issue so far.
Would Sideloading Q on a device be of any use to those visiting the UK, and using a local SIM while there, if they prefer the O2 network?
