Just thought I'd share my experience. I was surfing on my G2 (running stock w/ the first OTA update installed, phone was not temp rooted) last night and I got this txt:
Free T-Mobile Msg: Phone Tethering & Wi-Fi Sharing access may be blocked unless you add a Phone Tethering & Wi-Fi Sharing plan available at my.t-mobile.com
I didn't think anything of it since I am on vacation and didn't even bring a laptop to tether with... until I got another text later that night:

Sure enough, as soon as that was sent EVERY page I tried in the Dolphin browser I was using redirected to a generic "buy tethering for $10" placeholder! After a few moments I realized they were trying to detect what kind of browser I was using and seem to be blocking certain browsers from getting online. I was surfing on my G2 with Dolphin's "user agent" set to "desktop." I changed the setting to "Android" and have had no issues since. I am able to visit "full" sites and even stream embeded flash movies, java, etc.

so u changed dolphins user agent and wifi tethering continued to work without issues? ur last sentence just isn't very clear.

He is saying that browsing on dolphin browser with user agent set to "desktop" was b being blocked. Changing back to "android" fixed it. He was not using wifi-tether at all.

OP: what rom are you running? Are you stock? I have not had this problem while running Cyanogen 6.1rc

If this is the case, t-mobile may remove the block for you on a per-account basis if you complain about now being able to use your device fully..

I just changed my user agent to desktop in the stock browser. If they block me I will call 611 and raise hell, I will not be blocked from using my "unlimited" web plan. I am all stock no root.

Does anybody encounter similar problem with Skyfire?
It appears the problem happens on Dolphin and I heard nothing on Skyfire (and I have no problem).

Odd, I was tethering with Android wifi tether, and have not received that message.

there is no possible way to do that.

Why not? Do you work for tmobile? Not challenging you, just saying if this is the case where its now hardcoded into the network, then we should think about raising hell to corporate!

I have to agree... I've gotten crazier things done through retention dept.

retention is the shiz, too bad i recently started a new contract and my tenure did not move with me(9 years gone) now its like i just started with t-mo and retention probably won't do much for me. still waiting on my text to block tether/dolphin though

The block is obviously something they have to enable on a per-account basis since it works for most people until they get the text. If it was system wide and not account-specific then it would stop working for everyone at once, not a few users here and there one at a time.

Time for tmobile users to build and install privoxy on your phones... it'll take care of this nonsense without requiring you to make any weird changes to your "tethered" computer.

I was using more bandwidth than I usually do on the desktop "User Agent" over Edge at the time (at least 100MB in an hour.) I just read another post on here which claims they send you a text after 100MB or something. After a couple of days I switched back to the desktop User Agent and have been using it since without any blocking. Seems to be certain criteria and possibly geographic location to get the texts and ban.

My buddy and I were downloading roms to flash on customers phones using my hercules as a hot spot on some Acer laptop he had cause he didn't have internet that week.
It was just on this line, but pretty much made your phone unuseable.

[Q] How to use Epic as mobile hotspot

Ok one of the reasons I mainly got this phone was the mobile hotspot feature because the internet at my college blows and it would be nice for everyone to be able to browse the internet in a single dorm and not just 2 people. Unfortunately Sprint has made it so this feature costs an addition 25 with your bill. I don't pay the bill so this isn't an option for me. I heard that if you root the epic, you can use the mobile hotpot feature for free. I haven't rooted it yet but I have the z4 root application on my phone. So how can I go about doing this?

Run z4root and then download and run wireless tether. Its not on the market so google it and you will find the latest version. I don't recall whether it will run on a stock kernel; if not you'll want to install a custom rom.

Ok I found a hit on google for wireless tether on google code. The only samsung glaxy device I saw said it ran on 1.5 but I'm on 2.1 so it should work right. I'm not sure if the device listed works with epic but it said galaxy device. Also will sprint notice the increase of data usage and charge me more?

If you are on 2.1 the best way is to get clockwork (use the one click root) then find mobile ap in the dev section and apply the zip. Way more stable than wireless tether in my experience.

Thanks much Jay. Gonna give that link the once over before I mess with the phone itself. Thanks ipaq as well. I'll check that out if I find any problems with the one in Jay's link.

Definitly if you are staying on stock rom, use mobile ap, it is soooooooooo much better then wireless tether, and if you follow my tutorial after rooting and getting clockwork first you can have themes with it too.

I think what he's trying to say about your expectations is you think you can do this and give everyone internet on your dorm. Do you know how slow that will run? Also you can only connect so many devices at one time. I don't know how many for wireless tether but mobile AP is 5. Yes wireless tether is a great feature its just not going to meet your expectations for helping a while dorm out.

Ive been tethering since i had windows mobile, and ive never been in trouble, just dont download movies or any other big files. I mean its not even worth it to download movies takes too long anyhow. Just dont take your phone in rooted with that app on it or then u might get into some trouble.

If you have an epic 4g you have unlimited (truely unlimited) data...they are not going to say anything regardless of how much data you use. That being said spint will not Check the status of your phone (root or un rooted). You are go to go on tethering

Yeah, I don't plan on doing anything crazy like torrenting. I'd use this to tether my iPad if I'm in an airport or on a long trip, or maybe if I'm on vacation and don't wanna pay $10-30 for the hotel's wifi. That's all. Nothing mundo crazy where I'm using gigs of transfers.

I've toyed with the idea of installing one of the hotspot programs. But, I'm very wary of surfing the Net without a NAT/firewall between my Windows box and the Net. Do these programs provide firewall-type protection to the machines that are surfing through them?

1. Rooted
2. Leaked Firmware
3. Using a custom rom that is modifing the system (All roms do!)
4. Overclocking (How would they know that?)
UPDATE: Verizon is developing the program and will take place in May-June.

What is your source on this information?

sue for breach of contract. they want to suspend it because people are tethering "Illegally" well according to my contract i have UNLIMITED data. does not say i have a LIMIT or how fast i can go thru it. if they do this they will need to start charging when friends use ur phone for checking facebook, twitter whatever uses data because then verizon hasnt authorized ur friends to use it. this **** is getting old. im starting to agree with sprints dan hesse when he says he looked up unlimited in the dictionary and found it says nothing about throttling or a limit.

I wouldn't install any updates if I were you guys lol. I would think our awesome devs will have some type of solution for this. Maybe one last " epic " ROM to use before the update that blocks VZW from looking into your phone.
I can't imagine that VZW would create some type of " big brother " software that automatically traces your DX to see if you are modded or not without an update.

My company issued Droid x's to employees and just announced that Verizon and or I.T. department will find rooted droids. Wonder how they do it? Needless to say I unrooted my x and it sucks now

Can they do that? I did all of thee above. However I didn't steal wifi tether like most of you a holes. I rooted so I could remove crap like NFS and kindle and play angry birds without ads (I would've paid if they'd let me). Whatever, I'd just leave VZW. F**k their ETF, I got other bills I'm not paying.

Seriously, one way or another everyone's dx was purchased (not leased) at some time which makes it your property, not Verizon's. Is there really any harm in customizing your phone? Or having access to the system files of the phone?

Yeah they can and that's why everyone is unfolding as we speak. Also I removed all the apps and **** that came on the phone and slowed it down. But I do have to confess if I knew ahead of time that they were gonna do this I would never used wifi tether.

Oh and by the way if wifi tether is such a problem than why is it on the market? And legally wifi tether is totally different from the 3G hotspot because if you compare the two wifi tether has more options and was available first. Also the developers can decide the fees of wifi tether but another company can't just rise there fee prices.

No not at all there is nothing wrong with having access to system files and making your phone suitable for the way you use it. Good point.

Does no body have a sack or what these are our phones if we mod them it's are business wifi tether is different but modding ur own hardware is ur right not a privilege.
There are other carriers mainly sprint and the soon nexus s so let them piss me off I got 3 smart phones with unlimited data and will leave in a heart beat.

Great. First I hear motorola us locking boot loaders, and now verizon is banning data if they catch you rooted. What's next?

Actually from a software standpoint 3g hotspot and tethering are VERY different. Tethering programs such as Wireless Tether for root users are using an Ad-hoc network that can only connect to one device at a time. Also Ad-hoc uses much more power and essentially all it is is usb tethering without the chord which is built into vanilla android and wireless providers have no authority to limit us from doing this. 3g mobile hotspot on the other hand is a service that Verizon provides that essentially makes your phone into a true wireless router. You are capable of attaching to numerous devices (up to 5?) and this is not an Ad-hoc network but a true wirless (wifi) network that, I believe, works just like your ethernet router at home.
What Verizon is doing here is trying to block the competition by baking this security feature into their phones, forcing you to use their 3g hotspot - this is why the free hotspot hack still works, they werent trying to target those using the TBH patch to "borrow" this service, they are targeting application's developed to circumvent the 3g mobile hotspot app all together. Its really a joke if you ask me and completely goes against what android stands for.
Verizon could give a crap about android though, thats why they attempt to put things like the VZ app store in to place so they can monitor the programs they offer (finally they have the iphone, its like a match made in heaven!) I dont know at what point exactly verizon started becoming Nazis, but thats what it has become. If they could, they would circumvent any openess that is offered from their phones through google and they are clearly making as many steps as possible toward this goal.

Wait just a moment. Wasn't there something not that long ago. That a judge ruled that a "Jailbreak" wasn't illegal? That once you've purchased a device legally, you are therefore able to do what you wish, as long as you stay within the confines of the law? How does rooting break the law? You're not stealing intellectual property. You're not harming anyone. Last I heard, Google is still claiming Android is OPEN SOURCE (that is until Honeycomb..A-holes) right? Most of us are forced into 2 yr contacts at $30 plus a month for unlimited data. So, let me ask. Is it illegal to buy a new car, buy some nice RIM's, drop a few 12's in the trunk, tint the windows, and add some nitrous under the hood to "Go Fast, Go Fast"!? I think not!
Now to those who've abused these cool hacks, then it's to your shame that we are now facing these possibilities. Just because you can break the rules, doesn't mean everyone should.

You need an att tethering plan to use webtop.... I don't know what you are talking about. There is a reason why xda is becoming more and more irrelevant as time goes on and developers are choosing a different website. It's people like you guys who just need to one up other posters who are causing this. There are some great people on here, then there are you guys. That's the reason why the rootzwiki is becoming the new standard. Oh and I should sell my atrix cause I asked a question about webtop? That clearly means I have no idea what I'm doing right? That's a joke but thanks for the suggestion

I have read that webtop should work when you are on wifi, but that's just what I've heard since I don't use it. If you're trying to use it while on AT&T's data network then, yes, you need tethering but there are tethering and webtop hacks galore in the "noob" thread that is stickied at the top of the "General" forum.

Also, try not to take anything personally. This is an internet forum, just let it roll off your back.

Just looked over the sticky and it has a link to a cwm installable webtop file that I already have. Nothing about disabling att from verifying the tethering plan required to use the webtop on 3G. Webtop works fine on wifi... And before gingerbread, there used to be a way to get it to work without a tethering plan. That is why I asked this "n00b" question that nobody seems to have an answer for.

Have you tried the "Entitlement" mod (enabling tethering)? It should be the one right above or below the Webtop link.

Also, like I've said, you can't take things personally on the internet, but if I can give some advice. Try to be more descriptive in your comments especially when starting an entire thread. Include things like what "mods" you have already used, and maybe include what ROM you're using and what resources you have already searched through for answers, you could even go as far as describing the steps you are using when encountering the issue. All of this helps the rest of us help you. Your original post "looks" like a "noob" question and that's like blood in the water for the sharks.

OP asked a valid question and didn't deserve to be noob-bashed. I have the same issue. I have done the "entitlement" hack using the SQLLite Editor to set the "Entitlement Check" field to "0", and I am able to use my Atrix as a mobile hotspot without a tethering plan.
However, when I attempt to use Firefox on the Lapdock while connected via 3G (WiFi off), a popup appears saying "Verifying AT&T account status for webtop...". Then, after a few seconds, it fails and another dialog pops up saying "The Firefox browser requires a Wi-Fi connection or appropriate data plan. Please use Wi-Fi or call AT&T Customer Service at 1-800-331-0500 to add the appropriate data plan to your account"
Any help would be appreciated.

Try this and see if it works. Make sure you have done the entitlement hack and while connected to the webtop turn on the mobile hotspot on your phone and then go into your networks and choose the tether apn.
I tried something in that nature and was browsing firefox on my phones data. I'll try again in the morning and see if that's what I did.

Is it considered tethering if instead of using the full browser firefox, that requires a tethering plan, to instead use a browser (such as Dolphin HD) INSIDE of the phone module app on the webtop... since it's actually using your phone's apps instead of firefox?

Thanks dmbrown81, that totally worked! I still get the nagging messages from the Webtop about needing a tethering plan, but if I just turn on WiFi Tethering while the phone is docked, Firefox will work fine! Brilliant!

You might try turning off the "Mot mobile device extensions" addon and see what happens.

Obviously that would never be detected, but ATT does consider it tethering. Total BS if you ask me, all the doc is is an external screen/keyboard/pad/battery, it is in no way a seperate system.

The odd thing is that while using a StarHub prepaid sim in Singapore on my unlocked ATT Atrix it doesn't do that check, only when I use my ATT sim.

Thanks everyone for suggesting the "hotspot" trip. I am curious as to why this needs to be done is we are using the entitlement hack. Does anyone know why this is or is the just the way to get around having to pay twice for data? Also, have you guys noticed a big hit in your battery life when using the hotspot tethering? I'm just happy that this solution works because I got the lapdock just for this reason.

There is something in the ATT firmware that recognizes when the phone is using an ATT sim and disables data connections to the webtop environment. The whole time I was in Singapore using a StarHub Green prepaid sim my phone never did that "Verifying account blablablah..." when I docked the phone in my LapDock, as soon as I docked it I could start using Firefox.
An interesting note: the phone disables all data connections for a moment when it does this check. I noticed it because Pandora died on me one day when I was listening and I docked my phone. I watched the connectivity arrows on the H+ icon the next time I docked my phone and they went away for a few seconds just as that toaster notification popped up. Even with the Entitlement Mod this happens.
Hotspot tethering will kill your battery life, although that battery life is augmented by the lapdock. I'm pretty sure you can turn tethering off once you've started up Firefox and are browsing away. Don't ask me how I know, a little bird told me.
No, using apps inside the phone view isn't considered tethering. You can use the stock browser inside there without doing anything. If att calls using a non-stock browser tethering, pitch a fit and tell them to piss up a rope.
And regarding my snark earlier: I think a lot of the people who have been here for a while get tired of seeing threads like "Can I haz root on my phone OMG I'm a noob" when we remember discussing the same subject multiple times in the past. I know this particular question has been asked and answered before. I found it ironic that you were being chided by someone who had < 10 posts.
tl;dr - non-ATT sims work without mods, ATT sim data connection gets disabled, this has been covered.

[Q] Making Cellular Calls On 3G Nexus 7 32gb?

Hi Guys!
I've just picked up a Nexus 7 32gb 3g and it's amazing to say the least. I can't believe for something just over £200 I have a full up to date android experience with premium hardware. Anyway what I was wondering was could I use this device to replace my recently broken Samsung Galaxy S1 (i9000). By which I mean make calls over 3g cellular. I want to pop in a contract sim and just use the minutes and texts of that and I was wondering whether it was possible?
I've done my research and apparently it's as simple as just copying over the default phone apk and it should work although I'm a bit skeptical as I've only seen one thread about. So what do I need to do to make cellular calls on the Nexus 7?

P.S. I don't mind holding a 7" tablet to my face to make calls, I'd probably just use hands free anyway, and I don't mind rooting or flashing roms.

Anyway what I was wondering was could I use this device to replace my recently broken Samsung Galaxy S1 (i9000). By which I mean make calls over 3g cellular. I want to pop in a contract sim and just use the minutes and texts of that and I was wondering whether it was possible?
I've done my research and apparently it's as simple as just copying over the default phone apk and it should work although I'm a bit skeptical as I've only seen one thread about. So what do I need to do to make cellular calls on the Nexus 7?

P.S. I don't mind holding a 7" tablet to my face to make calls, I'd probably just use hands free anyway, and I don't mind rooting or flashing roms.

I am also looking for an answer to this question, i can't find any answers, would you be able to try the phone apk and report back. I am not sure if you need rot access to do that.

Also interested, if only because the carrier that my SIM comes from occasionally requires me to make a call to their automated attendant when their online management tool isn't working.

Metaphorically speaking, Oh and yeah I'm probably going to try the phone.apk although I was wondering if anyone has had any experience or anything?
Oh and to put the phone.apk app back on I think you'll either need root access or ABD, but don't take my word for it, I'm no expert lol,

No idea. As of yet the only AOSP phone with 4.2 is the GNex (Nexus 4 is not in AOSP yet either due to the same licensing issue).
And unless devs find a clever workaround, N73G isn't going to get the same scope of ROMs as the wi-fi version until they sort out the licensing.

Any results yet?

Please don't keep us in suspense. This data is what I need to determine between the Nexus 7 or the 10. I find it odd that this question is not being ask more on the net. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1958686 is the only other thread really that's asking this question and not just some random mentioning of it in a sea of Nexus 7 threads out there.

you can not just push phone.apk in fact your device ALREADY has phone.APK and if you try to push it then you will receive the message "you are replacing a system app.
the reason you cant USE or SEE it is because of the way our framework.res is compiled and it is not set as a phone device it is set as tablet among other settings that are different as well.
its not that easy but hopefully once its out in full force then developers will figure out a way perhaps with custom roms that allow it.

So you mean it cannot be used as regular phone? I live in Germany and I have been trying to use it as a phone from yesterday. It isn't possible I guess. Can I use diverting calls to Yuilop? Please guide.

I am also searching the answer for the same question just posted for more attention.

Done it and it works great you need a device called Socblue ,I used the socblue A860 linked it via bluetooth and i now have 4 sims active all the time on my tablet......

Yes it can be done you have to get a Bluetooth client I have used socblue a860 with four sims two for France and two for the UK hope this helps.
