[Q] Going to replace outer screen/digitizer! Help appreciated! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, not long ago I dropped my N4 and cracked the screen, which is ok, but the touch for half the screen doesn't work , it's driving me nuts. So I ordered a new digitizer/screen for $30 http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=221329487619&ssPageName=ADME:L:eek:C:CA:3160 (shipped from within canada (vancouver), so this is good for me since I live in canada ), the loco adhesive for $10 http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=151173224743 (also from canada, toronto), and the loco adhesive remover for $10 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261294962426&ssPageName=ADME:L:eek:C:CA:3160 (but its from china x_x, a dreaded 2-4week wait). A watched a few videos on how to replace the screen, but none of them had commentary or much info in the description :/ lol. Any advice on what else I'll be needing? And once I do get my stuff what are some things I need to look out for? I've replaced blackberry and ipod screens, but this will be my first time doing something like this since the n4 screen replacement seems a bit more complicated. And I can borrow screwdrivers and heatgun from my dad, though if there was an alternative to using a heat gun to get the screen off that would be great.
Thanks!

hermes touchscreen dead... UH OH

I discovered my phone filled up with sprite during a house move for my sister , long story short over the course of 2 hours or maybe more my touchscreen slowly died and now does not work at all.
Ive taken it apart and all looks well, I've got my finger on the "order new screen/digitizer" button just want to know if anyone knew if that was a bad idea and wasn't going to fix it... any suggestions or notes? thanks guys
Buy new LCD (complete).. If you buy just the digitizer then you have to unglue the digitizer from the screen, Align and reglue the new one. If you stuff it up its a lot of time and effort wasted and you still have a dud phone...
The complete lcd WILL cost more (on ebay Oz digitizer is $20 and lcd is $100) but the hassels of putting in a new digitizer are ridiculous...
I actually just bought a "broken" Hermes of the same model and paid $120.. It still worked fine but I now have OTHER spare parts if something else dies...
Just a thought....
Cheers...
well http://www.blackberry8100parts.com/...Touch-Screen-Digitizer-With-Tools_p_3-73.html is what i was looking at, as far as i can tell thats the screen and the digitizer together and i dont have to mess around with putting the two together for 35$, or am i mistaken?
Looks right and is a good price too...

Broken screen

Does anyone have a screen they took out of a device that is cracked or scratched baddly I could have? My screen has an annoying chip i'd like to see if I can fill with one of these windshield repair kits, but i'd rather not try it on my phone. I'd like to test it out first.
Just remember that the LCD has the digitizer above it. You may find using the windscreen repair kit may interfere with it, especially if its like a paste or something. The digitizer is stuck to the LCD with glue that might leave a small space between it & the LCD. If it is aciidently filled at a certain place you might find it has a part of the screen that is registering a tap.
Still only way to find out is to try but if I were you I'd get a replacement LCD (with Digitizer). They have been reported on ebay (states) for approx $25US.
Cheers...
Are you stalking me?
LOL, J/K.
Yeh i see what your saying and i thought about that. There is a kit that that i'm wanting to try is not a mix epoxy like most. It's thin like water and you have to let the sun cure it. It's crystal clear and i'm only looking to take a rough edge off a chip and one scratch that keeps catching my stylus. But then again if a dig is only $25USD on ebay it might not be worth the trouble. But then again i do like to tinker and if you don't try you can't find out right?
No worries, I'd probably get the spare 1st, then screw around. Gotta wait a couple of weeks to get the new LCD in if something went wrong but it would only take minutes to fix if you have the spare on hand.
Cheers...
I looked on ebay last night a new screen w/digi is $54USD. Half of what i paid for my phone on ebay. I'll proabably pass on this project for now at least. I know this is off topic but do you know if there's a VISTA compatible kitchen? I've flashed 6 diff roms over the last 2 weeks and i keep falling back on schaps. I'd like to try to decompile it though and take out some of the stuff i don't use to free up some memory. I posted a new thread in the upgrading forum asking this question, but since i already have your attention here and you seem pretty sharp i figured i'd ask.
FWIW,
I have a brand new (verified working) Hermes Screen (with digitizer) that I ended up not needing. I'll ship it standard USPS (with delivery confirmation) to anywhere in the US for $40.00.
First PM & payment gets it.

Broken S4, is it worth anything to keep/sell? What to do if selling?

Greetings,
My S4 screen cracked a few weeks ago. I'm pretty handy at fixing just about anything, but this time I've failed. I was going to replace the screen tonight, however unlike the many videos, when I heated up my phone and started to lift up to remove the adhesive, the cracked screen shattered like safety/tinted glass. The glass was finally off, however I suppose I truly didn't heat it enough, as there was a lot of adhesive residue behind. I was slowly cleaning it up, and suppose I pressed too hard on the digitizer, that the bottom left corner has display issues now, with a very faint line running left to right around the problem area.
So, here I sit with a new glass, optically clear adhesive, uv lamp, and a broken S4 Just picked it up about 2 months ago, but lesson learned (buy a heat gun and a temp gun if i ever need to do this again).
I'm ready to move on with life and get a new phone. Since I'm mere months in to my contract, I'll be shopping for a new phone on my own online. Might get another S4, might get a Note 3.
I'll take any constructive advice folks have to offer. Is the phone worth anything to anyone as it sits? I see a bunch of broken phones on ebay selling for insane prices (150+) with broken digitizers. I suppose my phone, given it's only the digitizer (and now missing glass) that's broken and the actual electronics are working might be useful as a parts phone to fix someones water/short circuited phone? If I were to post the phone and all accessories on ebay, how would the sale work as far as the phone being linked to me or my tmobile account? I'd keep the SIM of course, and the IMEI is good since it's actually my phone, is the proper thing to do to simply sell it, let someone else stick in their SIM and move on with life, or are there risks I need to be concerned with when handing my phone off to someone else, might they cause me some annoyances some how if i dont safeguard myself?
Thoughts? Or, even thoughts about what to get next?
After looking at prices for new S4s or a Note 3, maybe the best bet is to replace the digitizer, it looks like a new digitizer and glass is $200. that might be the way to go
I would agree, if you are able to replace both parts it will work out much cheaper. Looking at it on the brighter side, once the digitizer is broken replacing it and the screen is much much easier.

Definitely just replace the whole screen. Also look if any of the official samsung repair shops near you have any discounts; I got my S3 screen replaced for around 80€ (been more careful with my S4).
Thanks folks. I have a new digitizer setup on the way ($200 shipped on ebay), will be black (front) on white (back) once installed! I feared for the worst at the point of breakage, now looking back a $200 repair doesn't seem that bad! Appreciate the responses!
U could try a store like the one I use it's in the UK but maybe of some help ?

Bought a new digitizer on ebay for $200 thursday morning and had it installed saturday. very simple process (thanks to some youtube videos showing how it's done)
well that s some good news congrats

Crap. Need phone replacement/repair options.

My S4 screen got two hairline cracks about a month ago and expanded a little. The phone was working fine but this was bugging me. I went to Amazon and purchased a new OEM replacement glass (cost me $4; skeptical on the OEM claims). Anyway I removed the old glass successfully with a heat gun and a plastic iPhone tool and removed all the old adhesive off.
Being stupid I peeled the black adhesive and balled it up. I went to put on the new glass and I realized the new glass doesn't come with adhesive on it. After installing it I then realized that I actually cracked the LCD (I guess from the pressure when I was pressing a bit on the glass to make contact with the adhesive I thought came on the glass). Anyway, my phone doesn't turn on now (screen is dead) although the phone still works. I removed the screen again and threw everything in a box.
I'm without my personal phone now and I'm stuck using my company phone for the time being for personal stuff. I looked at Amazon and the replacement LCD is $200. I'm not on a contract with this phone and don't want to sign a contract with AT&T or I lose my current minute package I have. I purchased this device from Craigslist from some guy for $400 a couple of months back.
What is the best route to repair this? Keep in mind I don't have insurance since I purchased this outright. This is the 32GB model. Should I just sell it AS-IS on Craigslist? How much should I ask?
By the way I think Gorilla Glass is BS. My phone fell about 4 inches on the ground and got two cracks.

Sell it as-is, ask around $150 - $200... someone who knows how to fix it will gobble it up. Take that money and spend a little extra and buy a Nexus 5 from Google. At least this is what I'd do...
If you really intend on keeping it.

Agreed. I'd rather have the Nexus 5 anyway.
Really sorry to hear about your phone though. I personally wouldn't risk replacing the LCD, you may break something else while inside..
If anybody wants to buy it let me know via PM. If not, I'll just hang on to it until the S5 comes out. I'm sure the price of the LED screen will drop.
I purchased another S4 (16GB model in White). It sucks because the broken one is a 32GB.
Update: Sold the phone to some guy who owns a cell phone shop for $175. Not bad.

Touchscreen broken : any experience with replacements ?

Hi,
First i am sorry if there is already a topic like this one but i was unable to find it. Feel free to just point at it and be approprately mean with me.
My N4 fell on the back and the touchscreen does not respond correctly anymore (a 2cm high band in the middle is unresponsive, jsut where i should validate my pin code). I would like to know if you know fair prices, high quality screen replacements. The original part from LG is 120 EUR according to my local retailer, but i see replacements on amazon and ebay around 50 eur. I know i could replace the touchscreen only but it seems very risky, so i'd prefer to replace the whole screen instead.
Thanks !

The two ebay screens I've ordered were both blems with air bubbles trapped in the film. They worked though. I've got pictures of them somewhere.
So I just bought and installed this one a week ago:
etradesupply dot com/oem-lg-nexus-4-e960-lcd-screen-and-digitizer-assembly-with-front-housing.html
And it was worth every penny. My digitizer had cracked in the bottom corner, but was fully functional. What I didn't realize was how scratched up the glass was and how much the oleophobic coating had worn off. The new screen, digitizer, and frame from etradesupply was perfect. No bubbles, the glass was curved on the sides, and it is just as responsive as the stock screen. I was really worried about it not being up to OEM standard. The installation was very easy. I have read some replacements not having a filter over the LED and light bleeds out, but this one has the filter. 5 stars, would buy again. I did alot of research before hand, and have heard many horror stories of Ebay replacements, but this one really worked out well.
