Well I dropped my G1 the other day and it busted the outer glass part. The LCD is fine and it still works perfect. I have looked everywhere,with no luck of finding any parts for them. So I called HTC and they told me 150-250 to replace the glass!! So I was wondering if any one know anyone that does G1 Repair or if anyone know of another phone that has more ava. parts for it with a 3.17" Screen? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Nope, I got AT&T. Was thinking of taking apart the phone and getting the glass measurements and having a custom cut piece of glass.

I read that the same screen is in use on the iphone 3g, I doubt its true they probably meant type or sumthin, maybe worth a check...
on the old palm pdas you could replace just the glass if the layer under it isn't damaged, this may no longer be possible with these screens, once the bigtime flashing begins there will be lots of bricks available pretty cheap, maybe you should keep an eye out for somebody who pooched the dev bootloader install then after you convince them they killed it you could buy it maybe for less than the HTC price...
gotta say, that sucks if you were a tmob customer you'd have a few options...

Hello. Don't you think It's weird that it happened to me too today?
I've never had a broke phone since my Nokia 8210.
Well, some idiot had placed out one of those kinds of plastic bands you use to seal packages with, a black one.
It was pitch dark and I fell as the plastic ring got snared around my feet. Obviously my Jabra bt3030 got pushed against the screen and it got severely cracked.
My insurance company seems to be covering the whole phone except a small sum. This was from the phone part, but I got to see if I can get something from the health insurance as I hit my head and scratched my hand (though not likely but I can always try)
The touch seems to work most of the time, though it reacts slowly but some times It's just dead.
This really sucks.
I'm dead serious when I'm talking that there was no way that the band could be seen when walking.

It is glass. But you can not simply cut a piece of glass to the same dimension as the touchscreen is integrated into the glass cover. So yes you will need to get a htc or aftermarket replacement part.
The interesting thing is that the repair cost you quoted is identical to the cost of the copay if you go with the Asurion device insurance T-mo offers. So device insurance would just be a waste of money at $5 a month if you end up with broken glass.
Looks like I will just have to hold onto it until aftermarket parts come out. I busted mine by letting it slip out of my hand while talking on it....then it took a 6ft fall to eventually land face first on concrete.....I didnt even wanna pick it up cause i new it was messed up and if it wasnt I was gonna call HTC and give them props! I have a ava. upgrade from AT&T Maybe get a Iphone until this one gets fixed then sale iphone on ebay for 5x wuts its worth.
The iphone's screen seems to crack pretty nice as well.
I hope changing the glass on the G1 isn't as frustrating as on the Iphone.

Cracked screen replacement with compatible HW from third party --when?
I cracked the LCD of my G1 after about three weeks and have noted that neither PPCTechs nor MobileKangaroo have yet acquired a source for the replacement screen.
My understanding is that HTC currently charges what one thread in another forum (http://www.allshadow.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4226) quoted as "a minimum of $238.00" to make this repair.
I expect this repair to be offered soon by third parties for about $150, likely using a non-HTC screen product to replace the damaged one.
Has anyone heard any reports about forthcoming availability of such hardware? If so, then are there any non-HTC services to make the replacement?

so have the same issue and this is what I found out
so from my understanding there are 2 part to the lcd the outer glass touch sensor and the inner lcd. if the the screen is just cracked and you can see the image the u have to replace both. attached are the part descriptions fromt he g1 service manual. and below is a link of a site that sells them, but for some reason they sell the touch scrren with the outer bezel making it cost more. i called htc to order just the touch sensor glass but they said the dont sell replacements, they just fix em

I contacted the seller of the screen and he/she told me that It's only the screen. If the G1 cracks It's the digitizer glass that cracks first. Then if you are unlucky the screen cracks as well. I managed to only crack the digitizer glass. The screen beneath is totally fine. Unfortunately removing the glass from the digitizer plastic was very painful and I managed to wreck the flat cable of the digitizer so that's beyond repair. Now I tried to disassemble the whole phone but I got stuck at removing the housing. First I had problems with the Torx bits. I have some Torx bits in my sets but the lowest I got was T8. I had to buy a cellphone bits set with a lot of different types of bits. It had Torx all the way down to T4. The T5 and T6 was what I needed. There are 4 T5 to remove and one T6. I have inserted the sharp plastic between the housing and the top case and released all hooks but it seems the front and back part of the housing of the phone is dead stuck.
You have to open the whole damn phone from the back to get to the inside of the screen. Why the screen housing uses standard Philips is also beyond me. I have lots of bad experience with standard Philips screws. The heads always get bad after a while of screwing. I have yet to have a problem with Torx.
Just curious, I have one on my HD right now but I definitely prefer my device without it. I don't carry it in a case, just in my pocket, but I'm careful with it for the most part. I don't put it in a pocket with keys and I don't rough it up any. Will my screen get scratched up easily with no protector? Is the screen glass? Thanks for any advice.
I would say: Get a screen protector!
With it you are on the safe side if you accidentally scratch your screen.
And its nearly invisible, so why bothering?

Definitely recommended along with silicone case. About 10 years I used to carry my PDA in the same manner as you do - in a pocket. One day while shopping, I reached into my pocket to pull out the PDA. As I brought to eye level, it slipped out of my hand. I managed to block it with my foot but the impact still cracked the crystal.
At the time I had insurance on it through some replacement service and this was covered. I even managed to talk the company into upgrading my memory at the same time for free.
The first time you either scratch your screen or drop it will bring back memories of this thread. In fact, about two months ago I dropped my Jade Clone in the same manner while getting out of my vehicle. Fortunately my silicone case protected it while the screen protector kept it from getting scratched. It landed on the screen side and slid about four inches.
I was sweating bullets that I might have cracked the screen because it landed on that side. Fortunately the silicone case must have taken the majority of the blow.

Being a Hong Kong shipper takes about 12 to 16 days to the US.
Additionally, I would recommend SquareTrade Warranty (http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/). They insure electronic devices. Generally you have 30 days to register or buy a warranty with them but they will do 90 days on some items. And, sometimes you can even sweet talk them to get a warranty 30 to 90 days from the date of purchase if you call them via phone. They will pay for repairs up to the purchase price.
Then too they seem to have lots of promo codes that can be googled because they seem to offer discounts up to 50 percent off for the first year of coverage. Generally your initial year coverage is about 10 percent of the purchase price not including shipping. If you buy on eBay, look for an item that has shipping included or is free. That way you might an extra $30 to $50 USD worth of coverage.
Sorry to be long-winded but next week I will put SquareTrade (ST) to the test. I have heard all good about them. I bought a refurbished HDTV and it went out in the first year of coverage. ST gives you the option of having it repaired locally or they will send out a prepaid shipping carton.
Well, when I called several local repair shops, the estimated repair exceeded my purchase price. If I had gone this route, I would have had to pay for the actual in-shop estimate (about $60 USD). Upon receiving the written estimate, ST would have paid out out my purchase price and I would have been out the cost of estimate.
But, I called back ST the same day and asked if I could get a carton shipped out. They said no problem and it is due Monday. The HDTV will go to one of their authorized repair centers where I expect it not to be deemed cost worthy of repair as per the phone estimates. In this case, I get my full purchase price back.
The nice thing is that with a promo code I paid only 10 percent of purchase price for two years worth of service protection. I will be extremely happy to be out only $50 USD instead of $532. The refurbished HDTV came with a two month warranty which passed eight months ago.
Bottom line? Get protection!

I'm careful, you should see the scratches on my screen protecter, use one.
Even if you're very careful down to the spec level of dust being able to scratch your screen...trust me, a single scratch on the screen is not a good sight to see better be safe than sorry man.
I scratched my screen protector with my stylus, one speck of dust and it will scratch.

I used to have a screen protector on my HD but i decided to remove it
after a few months because i didn't like the air bubbles.
I've tried maybe 4 different protectors, including invisibleSHIELD, followed all the instructions, but i just couldn't install the damn thing without making some
annoying air bubbles. Finally i gave up.
2 weeks after, my HD has dropped on a terrain full of gravel from about 1.5 meters.
Now, instead of air bubbles i have two big scratches on my screen

argh! Well THAT didn't take long. My S4 fell about 14" onto the floor and the glass shattered the day I got it. Putting aside for the moment how disappointed I am that the phone failed the most basic of drop tests (I've dropped every smartphone I've ever owned multiple times from greater heights and this is the first one that broke...and so easily).
I decided to attempt to repair the glass so I ordered a replacement glass kit and went for it. The repair itself was fairly straightforward and pretty much just like the S3.
After getting the whole thing back together I noticed that when I do a screen wipe to remove fingerprints (applying a bit of pressure to the screen) I get a bubble in the center of the screen...like it's sticking to the digitizer/LCD screen below. The kit came with a small suction cup which I can use to pull the glass away from the digitizer and the bubble goes away. It seems to have gotten better from yesterday to today - it no longer sticks during normal use, only during heavy wiping.
So...can anyone give me some direction here? Will it just dry out and take care of itself? Should I take the screen off and clean the LCD again? Should I try using several layers of adhesive to increase the gap between the glass and LCD/digitizer?
Honestly I'd call the company and ask them...this shouldn't be happening and if it were me, I'd get a replacement. Then again I always carry insurance. Best buy is free screen replacement.

I got my phone from Sprint...the insurance has a 30-day grace period before it goes into effect and a $200 deductible for broken screens. I cancelled it.
The guy said he'd be more than happy to send me another screen...I just want to make sure it's not something I did. This screen is OEM, but of course there is no glue between the LCD and glass after the replacement.
I didn't know there was a 30day grace for replacements. This must be new. I've had my phone replaced before 30 days after I bought a phone before. And screen insurance replacements are $100. Just did one not to long ago. This is why I only by from Best buy now. I make them price match Sprint.com and then buy insurance through them at the discounted rate if you pay up front. No deductible on anything and only thing they don't insure is lost or stolen.
But back to the original problem... If the suction cup tool doesn't fix it then you can try to clean it off and redo it again before send it back for another one. Just not sure why its sticking like that.

There's nothing out there showing how to fix the G3 screen other than one shop's teardown that claims it's easy to fix G3 hardware issues (nothing about the screen though). Parts are posted all over the Internet and eBay, but they're all generic-looking stuff and who knows if the digitizer glass is really GG3. Prices of parts ranging $140 to $200, and I need both the digitizer glass and the LCD, maybe a front frame because it has a couple of small dings from the dog's teeth. Already dreading the price quotes from shops, since the QHD LCD must be more expensive than anything out there, and it's fairly new. Figuring that it will cost hundreds of dollars no matter who I have repair it, since that's what some shops quote for newer smartphones and tablets like the Galaxy S5 and Note 3, I decided to ship my G3 to LG so I wouldn't void what warranty I had left.
LG received the phone 7/28/14. The next day, they email me a diagnosis and repair quote since it's not covered by warranty (duh!).
It will cost $146 to repair, $153 to fully refurbish. Pretty much justifies not getting the insurance policy. YMMV, from what I read in the G2 forum about LG factory service (the parts/repair prices may vary depending on availability and demand).
So if you drop and break the screen of your precious new G3, then don't worry about how much it will cost to repair this relatively new device, if you are not too concerned about turnaround time.

The issue is that your phone loses approximately $5/day in value everyday. So even bigger loss each day its out of your hands ... So insurance isn't that bad! I really think with the life cycles of cell phones the G3 will be on craigslist for $250 in a few months !

My two bits...I dropped my G3 4 days in and destroyed the screen. As you can imagine I was pretty upset and concerned that I had just wasted $800 and had no clue what to do. I ended up finding a retailer online that sold the Oem screen, digitizer and casing for what ended up to be just over $200. With a little help from the disassembly video I tried to do myself. I am happy to report that it was unbelievably easy to complete the repair and I have a 100% working phone again. As the video shows you remove 13 screws, remove the two pieces of the backing and pull out the mother board. The only thing you need to do then it gently remove the vibrator, camera..front and rear, speaker, head phone jack and little daughter board. These are all stuck with two sided tape and just require a little light prying to remove. The replacement unit even had the two sided tape pre installed and you only had to remove the little plastic tabs that covered the sticky tape and then place each part in its corresponding place. I reassembled the phone and voila...a brand new working G3. The nice thing is the replacement was the case as well so the dings and dents from the drop on the case were all gone as well. So if you do the same don't be afraid to save the labour and do it yourself

Some things cost more in other countrys. And I also wanted a really good reseller in case anything happens. With quick and good support. without need to send it, wait two weeks etcetc.

Reading this made me look up just what's so great about Corning's various hardened glass, and I've realised it's much more to do with being scratch-resistant than actually shatter proof. Funny how easily marketing will leave you stuck with the wrong (inflated) idea ... and, sure, scratch resistance is nice, but then that's why you buy a nice cheap case for your phone rather than put it in your pocket together with your keys.

It won't be THAT cheap for a while. G2's were still going for like $400 up until the g3 launched.

LG G3 repair
The G3 is ten times easier to repair than the G2. The back comes right off like any other normal android phone. Remove the screws that you see holding the back on the midframe/bezel. remove the top half using a safety pry tool and do the same with the bottom half. Disconnect the two ribbon connections at bottom near charging port. Take out battery if you haven't already. Heat the back using heat gun or hairdryer. Heat front of assembly using the same heat gun or hairdryer. There are no other ribbons or connections to worry about at this point. Using iSesamo bar or other prying tool remove the broken assembly. (Note: There is no adhesive holding the LCD to the midframe so the removal is very easy.) Just pry around the top and sides of the phone and pull up at top then slide old LCD assembly out. Be sure to use a good 3M adeesive when putting in the new assembly. Connect the ribbons back to the board, close phone, power the phone on and enjoy. The whole process should take no more than half an hour if you ever done any previous repairs to another phone. Hit thanks if this helps

Hey I am trying to do the same thing you did.
My question is how hard was removing the daughter board? What tool and technique you used?
I can't find a video or tutorial where they remove the little daughter board and wanted to know how hard it is to remove before ordering parts.
It really was very easy, much easier than I expected. The daughter board was also pretty easy and I think I ended up using my finger and a guitar pick but anything small will suffice. The two sides sticky is really not that strong so just have patience when pulling those pieces out as they do come off pretty easy, Just use caution, you will be fine.
I need help to apply my pre-cut adhesive to my LG G3 D850
I bought an lg g3 d850 digitizer+lcd combo and a precut adhesive sticker for the model. Howwever, I am not sure how to apply the adhesive because there is less than 1 mm of room on the sides. What is the best approach for me to apply the pre -cut adhesive. Here is the link to the adhesive that I am talking about.
Will LG still repair your LG G3 even if you tried repairing it yourself? I tried ordering a new screen and putting it in myself but that didn't work so the lg g3 has been opened which voids warranty.
My wife's G3 developed this weird mark on the screen (always visible when the screen is on), and she claims to have never done anything like drop it in the tub or toilet... but it appears to be water damage to me. (See pic attached)
I put it in rice for a few weeks, and it's not going away... so I'm ready to try to fix it. Has anyone seen anything like this? Since the glass is still in good shape (it wasn't dropped or cracked)... what do I need to order to fix it?
I had the same concerns as the OP... buying a replacement LCD panel from Amazon or eBay, I wasn't sure if I'd get a full-res OEM replacement or a cheap knock-off. Can anyone point me to a reliable reseller (preferably on Amazon for several reasons) that would have the right parts to fix her phone up?

The crack you see is in a tempered glass screen protector... not the screen itself.

I have broken my glass on g3, display works fine but shuttered portion of screen is not fully functional, please can someone point me to reliable reseller, preferable on eBay, cos don't want to trash my money on knock-offs, I wanna real deal 100% OEM original display. So here is the situation. My PH-1, defying logic, has a cracked screen despite me having a case and a screen protector on it. It started out as a hairline crack at the top of the screen but also with a fair amount of corner damage. What doesn't make any sense is that before I purchased the case and screen protector the phone survived quite a few drops without a scratch. Yesterday I dropped it again, on its back, and upon turning the phone over know it is really shattered. Still works but it is in rough shape.
I scored the phone on the Sprint deal at 145 plus the camera so I can't really complain if I have to spend another 199 to have a new phone. The problem is, I don't want to spend another 199 if the same thing is going to happen again. I have never had a phone crack with both a case and a screen protector installed before. That being said, the screen protector was a poor fit and did not cover the corners at all. It almost seems as if the case had a negative effect which is also very odd. No damage before installing the case.
Just wondering if this is a rare occasion or if it is common.
I really like the phone and I want the company to succeed. But if they are this fragile I would probably pick up an LG or an HTC.
I am on Verizon so a One Plus isn't an option.

I think what happened to you is a one off. You should go buy a lotto ticket maybe? On the bright side, you'd still be paying less than what I paid for 1 PH-1 with the 360 cam, used. I bought my combo from swappa in mint condition for $390. You're only at $344, and you got 2 phones Granted one bit the dust. But if I were you, I'd get the replacement. I'm not sure there is a better phone out yet, imo. Only thing to make this phone better on gen 2 would be to get rid of the black bar at the bottom so it is completely bezeless, and to up the IP rating to 68 at LEAST 67. Motorized selfie cam? No notch? That would be nice. I hardly ever use the selfie cam anyway. Just my $0.02. If mine broke, I'd be buying another one

I literally just put my broken one in the mailbox to go back to Essential (Asurion is actually the insurance claim handling company). Mailman hasn't even picked it up yet. I cloned everything into the new replacement last night w/TWRP. So, there was virtually no on-screen setup (security/fingerprints had to be redone), and I'm back up and running as if my phone was simply repaired. That's something that's just not possible with a different phone.
Essential was quick about responding. They take 1 biz day to process and the replacement is sent FedEx Standard overnight.
I am overall disappointed with the fragility of the phone as its durability was a major selling point for me. Essential still has that PH-1 bouncing and tumbling on concrete on their homepage. But, right now there is not another phone with the dimensions, design quality, and components that can compare to this. Now, if I broke another one, I probably would not do it again, unless the price was at least half.
I am a little concerned about your situation being that you had screen protection and a case. But if I were you, I would still do the replacement, and try completely different protective devices. Especially since you got such a deal on the first one, I think it would be a no-brainer for me. I paid $350 for mine w/no 360 cam, and I still did the replacement.
I mean, even knowing this outcome, (I'm $550 in at this point) I still don't think I would have went for the OnePlus 5T. I really appreciate the form factor of this phone, and I plan to baby this replacement.

Yeah, I am addicted to the form factor after having the hand stretching, ache causing Nexus 6. And the fingerprint scanner for unlocking and notifications. What caused your breakage? Did you have a case and/or screen protector?

Mine fell from my back pocket onto concrete, about 1.5 ft drop. I had a case.... in my backpack . It's just too pretty a phone to want to case it much. But, that's all over for me now.

I try not to drop fragile electronic devices.
On the other hand I can be a dolt so I always get insurance.
I got a SquareTrade coverage on this phone right after I got it.
It was $140 for three years with a $75 deductible for repairs.
So I suggest getting a SquareTrade warranty on the next one.
It also adds value when you want to sell it.

Since the 'out-of-warranty' replacement is $199, unless you think you might go through more than one replacement, neither the extended warranty from Essential, or the price you gave for SquareTrade would be worth it. That's why I never sign up for them. I figure if I manage to break my device, the repair or replacement fee is going to be either my incentive to be extra careful from then til the next device, or impetus to sell it and try something else.

Actually, $140+$75 = $215 which is a wash if you have one incident at $200.
It also covers any other issue for three years, so YMMV.
But even a bricked device would be covered.
One might argue that insurance is never worth it. you can only make the argument until the first time you drop and break your device, have a battery issue, brick or anything else.
I don't typically break or lose my phones, but there is a first time for everything.

Case was the Tudia without the notch for the 360 cam, so a full coverage case in other words. Fits pretty snug and covers the edges for sure. Screen protectors were mocolo. Screen protector can be placed on the phone even with the case on, that is how much screen is still exposed even with the protector. Also, the phone was not nearly as responsive to touch with that protector on. Really surprised that the case didn't do the trick with the corner covered. The corner is where the downfall began.

Can you elaborate on this statement in the OP? Got any pics?
I got some of those edge-only adhesive screen protectors with the black borders, which leaves a tiny amount of screen glass exposed (barely 1mm on top [which allows for the speaker opening], and on bottom, and probably 0.5mm on either side). It appears that even with that gap, only the screen protector or the plastic around the screen could make initial contact on a fall. But, my Incipio clear case doesn't fit without catching the edges of the protector and audibly making them peel up (not necessarily visibly). So it's not wearing a case at the moment.
I have a Tudia Lula 2.0 case coming (the one with the 360 cam cutout), so your incident is a little concerning.
I don't care about the durability of a case or screen protector as long as they do their job when it matters, and that is to prevent the phone itself from sustaining damage. But it's for naught if they don't prevent, or worse even cause damage.

I don't think the Essential is any more or less fragile than other phones.
My daughter dropped her S9 in a case with a green protector.
$149 to replaced the device.

I think phones with an edge to edge screen are way more susceptible to damage from a drop than phones with bezels or whatever you call them on all 4 sides. Unless you get a bulky case with raised edges that completely obliterates the beautiful design of the phone a case will probably provide little to no protection in a drop. The same is true of a screen protector because it provides zero protection for the edges of the glass.

Fair point. I always said screw design,give me a tank.I did pull the trigger on the replacement.Got it in a day.Signed up for OTA 8.1 and had it in a couple of hours.Now I just have to baby this thing.And this one is fully unlocked.My original was a Sprint variant and it was bugging out when I pulled the SIM and I could never have used it on vacation overseas.

Hey Guys,
I am from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I dropped my 3 month old Essential Phone on concrete floor face down and the display is completely smashed in one corner and has cracks all over the screen. Mine broke because I had neither the case nor any screen protector on the phone.
I am planning for the 199$ replacement but heard from them that its a refurbished device. Just want to know whether the refurbished replacement device is void and free of any scratches/ dents or any other physical defects on the body of the phone. And also the overall quality of the phone is good before I take this plunge.
