I successfully installed something like MF9HotspotMod last month and everything was cool until I did the Android 4.3 update. Then I attempted to root the phone again and bricked it for a day with in stuck on the yellow sprint screen until I did my next trick.
I went into recovery and installed jlftespr_mja_text2.zip after trying many attempts I read off of forums. This was the only rom that actually got my phone to work.
Everything looks good except for a had some issues with the phone not working in LTE areas. Sprint said to turn LTE off and set the phone to CDMA only (that really didn't solve the issue but got them off the phone.)
How can I get this back to as close to as possible stock rom, something that will run the Multiwindow App that uses Xpose Installater (the best thing to happen to phones since the G1 came out!), and get free wifi hotspot?

If you want to get back to stock you have a couple of options, download the full MJA tar from sammobile or a mirror site and install via odin, then root it with cf autoroot and install the MJA hot-spot mod. Or download the rooted stock MJA rom from the development section and install then install the hot-spot mod. Simon center you are having problems with your radio, I would recommend starting crash with the full tar.

Nope its this one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2522810
You need to download that tar file and odin and just flash it. This will delete your internal memory and then try to perform ##27286# in the dial pad and try it and see if it works.

Nope not the kernel just the one of the other two zips. The kernel is built in the the tar file. Just download which ever one. Extract it, you just get a .tar.md5 file. Start odin and put it in the pda slot. Set the phone in download mode. Connect to the phone. Flash it. BTW THIS WILL DELETE YOUR INTERNAL MEMORY SO MAKE A SAFE! BEFORE ANYTHING! Once that is done. Boot into recovery. Should be stock recovery now. Just do a factory reset and reboot. And presto you should be stock mja. Just go to the dial pad and enter ##27286# and it should reboot a couple of times. And see if that helps you.

I'm looking for re-inforcement here:
After MUCH reading, searching here and the net, I tried Motochopper, which failed, then went to CF-Root, these very shaky old hands instead of clicking on the file for the L720, clicked on the file for 900.
Bricked it.
Sprint gave me a new one (didn't even have it a day), reinstalled FoxFi and can tether USB/Bluetooth, but not WiFi which I need for the Tablet.
Now I'm gun shy.
It would seem that there are 10-15 methods, but CF-Root seems the best and NOW I have the file for the L720.
I've an S4,
Software: L720VPUAMF9
Build: JD939.L720VPAMDL
S/W Boot Status: Samsung
Kernel: 2.4.0-529760 - Dated 4.27.2013
Can someone reinforce which method is the least prone to problems? I'm not that interested in flashing ROM's, just want the WiFi Tether.
Thanks in advance and for those who feel the need to tell me search/been discussed/look etc.,I have A LOT.

Didn't see it the sticky, probably bleary.
So CF-Root (with the PROPER files seems to be the way to go.
Thanks for the reply, it's a bit different then a pad, if you screw up the pad, your not out your only phone - just a pad (BUT not to downplay the cost).

I'd just Odin a rooted rom... it's way easier than using a root method, and as a bonus, you'll get familiar with the most powerful recovery method for your phone! It'll even fix most bricks!

I thought about that, but I'm relatively contented with the stock software/firmware. If there were a simple ROM, I might do it. I like the idea of - maybe- TWRP - but really only need/want to tether WiFi and add a firewall.
What'dya think?
AND why would it be easier?

Not sure if you have ventured out to try it again, but if not you'll find all your answers here.

Just do the OTA updates on your phone. Should be two of them at this point, one to MDL, then when it is done to MF9. After you see MF9, do CF autoroot. Then install TWRP as your recovery, followed by the HotSpot. Just do what the videos show and you'll be fine.
I think I did exactly what you did. I got my new phone and tried to install the HotSpot while on MDC (whatever original version was), after doing CF autoroot. Failed to read the part about HotSpot being specifically for MF9. Used Odin to reverse back to stock Rom and Recovery and ten followed steps I outlined from there. Phone is working awesome and WiFi is best I've seen. Barely uses battery.
I used the qbking77 videos from youtubes and was rooted with twrp recovery in 5 minutes tops it's the best way to do anything. To see it get done step by step is the best way for me.
For wifi tether several roms got it built in already.

Just the stock recovery. Best thing to do is to search the forums for triangle away, flash your stock recovery after running triangle away. Follow the prompts for that, btw. Then use SuperSU's built in unroot.

You could extract the recovery.img from the tar and then create a zip file from that. I think it would work, but I've never tried it.

Hi everyone, I have been a fan of the xda website for a long time and you guys have always helped me solve my problems with my phones.
This is the first time I need something that I haven´t been able to find. Forgive me if it is already answered but I cannot find it.
Basically my problem is that I was trying to rom my phone for the first time and it failed.... miserably. I did not brick my phone; it still works, starts up and functions normally except for a few key things: a few programs do not function any more, most notably the wifi, contacts and dialer app, the lock screen widgets and some others.
What I did was installed safestrap, then downloaded the gravitron rom. I put everything in the right place, created the extra rom slot, then is where the noob came in. I forgot to switch over to the rom slot and instead installed over the main rom... Wow much noob, right?
Anyway, what I want to know is if there is any way to salvage my phone? I am on baseband mf3 and with the research I have done, I have concluded I am screwed until odin files for mf3 come out. But if there is any way I can get my phone back to normal I would appreciate it so very much.
Thank you all in advance for your help. I apologize if i have left anything out but I will give any info on request.
No love for the guy with busted wi-fi?
Please help me! I'm killing my data plan... and it's really annoying to not be able to use my dialer or contacts.

Sounds like you're on mf3 firmware? If so, I'd flash that firmware and start over. Google mf3 tar files xda
If on MF3 you will need to flash the modules provided in the development thread. If on MK2, you will need to manually place them because there is no flashable modules yet AFAIK. No need to start from scratch unless you want it back to complete stock.

I would run the MK2 or NAE tar file from the development section. It will restore your phone to factory setup. However it will install the Knox bootloader. It's likely the easiest path.

Well, this is my problem: Last day I was trying to delete carrier name from top left notifications bar, so I found a thread that shows how to do it, specifically modifying 3 lines of build.prop system file. After doing this my phone won't boot up anymore. It shows Samsung Galaxy S4 logo an then stays black.
My phone has stock firmware i337UCUFNC1, and rooted with towelroot.
Actually I am only able to get to stock recovery and download mode.
I've tried some options but getting no results since bootloader its locked I guess.
I made a backup of the original build.prop, but unfortunately I had no external sdcard at that moment, so the backup its on internal memory.
Any ideas where to get this solutions? Adb? Flashing bootloader?
