Point Of Rooting at this time?

Is there really a point to root right now with not many Roms to load etc. Still kinda new to Android so bare with me. Yes I would love to get rid of this Rogers bloatware.

Depends if you like to use apps that require root? Tether? Titanium? etc...

Yes de bloat your phone run a nanodroid lol and access other apps that require root

SetCPU...flash custom apps/mods.etc

Ad Away, Titanium Backup, Tethering, freeze/remove bloatware.....

If you're like me... in case a ROM pops up while you're out and about and you can't wait to get home and root then flash it. That's actually the sole reason I'm rooted now

What everyone else said. I almost always stick with stock ROMS with root and s-off so I can remove bloatware and run android wifi tether and titanium backup.

Root makes it a more enjoyable device IMO. That alone makes it worth it (The roms even more so of course)

Im waiting for a one-click method like there is for my ET4G.

All canadien service providers allow tethering.
But to answer his question, yes, rooting the device is not only about roms, its about CPU management, running root options on apps like juice defender and mybackup pro, in my case i need root and recovery to run ceberus from CWM to make sure if i get my phone stolen i can always track and recover it no matter how many times the thief factory resets it. Android is a beautiful OS, rooting is an extra bonus...but i could very well live without it (if touchwiz wasnt so damn ugly)

If you can post on a web board you are saavy enough to root this phone via odin. The instructions are not difficult to follow and the whole process takes less than 15 minutes

New to Android here too. I have to follow a method that doesn't increase the 'counter' to preserve the warranty right?

I did it to freeze all the bloatware Sprint and Samsung added to the s3. Also, so I can use apps that require superuser permissions.

I got my Samsung galaxy s4 first day of release and I really like it, I had an iPhone before and I jailbroke it because it made it so much better, but the question is, is rooting just as good as jailbreaking? Should I root my galaxy s4? It can sometimes be a bit laggy on the home screen and was wondering if a custom rom would fix it?

You don't need to root it, its already good enough and if the small lag bothers you, have you tried other launchers such as Nova launcher? It's almost lag free.
But if you want the best experience from your S4 then yes root it, try CF auto root, but remember you lose warranty and anything can go wrong, so try to follow instructions properly and always backup your important data.

Thanks for the reply, I did try go launcher but just couldn't get used to it so I went back, but will give nova launcher a go. If I did root is it easy to un root it if I don't like it?

Yes its very easy to un-root, you can always flash a stock rom via Odin, and some custom rom have an option to unroot your phone.

What about triangle away and resetting the binary counter back to zero? I think its not possible right now on i9500 variant.

Rooting all depends on your usage.
The benefits being custom roms, but again it all depends if you want to keep flashing and ensuring you always maximize the phone to its full potential.

If you don't know exact reason why you want to root your phone then rooting just for rooting makes no sense. Root access by itself won't make your device any better. Also try to remember that there are many guys here that blow their phones by messing with them.
I've rooted my old sgs2 after few months and used it that way. After some time the only thing I needed root for was the possibility to move apps data to sdcard.
My sgs4 is not rooted for now because I don't need it. Playing with mods or "removing bloatware" is total nonsense to me as I prefer stable device. Also flashing custom roms is nor for me. So widely spoken app Titanium Backup I've used maybe twice in a year, the same I can say about clockwork mod. Just have no time to mess and repair all the time because I need working device as it helps me a lot in my work as smartphone and assistant, not as subject to experiments.
Guy from that video nicely explained what is root for and all of this is definitely true (part about security can be controversial because rooting and installing su does not patch security hole and permission prompt appear only when root access is achieved by su not by security hole), but for me in everyday use it turned to be as useful as towel for a fish.
Android by itself is very good in terms of functionality and far from being restricted in a apple way. You cannot compare root to jailbreak because jb on iphone is needed to get some basic functions. Android has all of this out of the box.
Remember also that rooted phone looses OTA upgrade possibility.

I am the complete opposite. If I have a device running an os, whether it be a computer, smartphone or whatever, I want full control of the device and it's os as it should be. I want full axx, full power of it.

I know there is plenty of info on this topic but I have a few questions and it would be nice to have them all answered in this thread. I have a lot of rooting and modding experience (previous phone was the evo 3d), but I remember reading that one of the 2? sprint s4 updates may either not allow some apps to work or kill a feature/ interfere with rooting is that true?
-So is the MF9 the newest update or the 2nd to last? Can you guys please break down the main things changed in the two updates?
- How do I check which I am on atm? I don't remember doing any of the large ones.
Finally what would the best way to root? I plan on keeping touchwiz for now, and probably using Ktoonsez kernel?
Which recovery is recommended?

MF9 is the latest official release. If you want it I recommend updating before rooting just because it is a bit easier that way. Largest change in MF9 is apps2sd capability but can see the changes here: Update Changlog
To check just go to menu/settings/more/about device. Take note of software and baseband version. This will tell you what you are currently on.

Recovery is really a personal choice. TWRP can be a bit buggy and depends on the version but still works for regular usage. CWM/OUDHS work fine as well. Use what you are familiar with. I prefer TWRP for the touch interface and restore of root if permissions get removed.
As for apps and MF9, I have read some having issues with certain apps but don't know much more than that. I have never had any issues with any app but know there are some with enormous amounts of apps on the device so who knows. Maybe it is a problem created when moving data to the extsd card.

I'm not familiar with anything specific to MF9. Probably depends on the device trying to connect. My Note 8 connects/works fine using the hotspot mod on MF9 and previous versions.

I don't get why people do not ask this in the noob thread instead of making a new one.

I have MF9, rooted, stock rom. The Hotspot mod works for me, just like it did on the MDL. No problems installing it or using it on my S4.

Simple Root?

I have never rooted and am scared to do so but I really want and need the ability to use more apps in the multi-window setting. Is there a simple/basic root for me as I don't really care about any other features that rooting brings to the table?
Google is my friend. I'm rooted now and Multi window is as it should be.

Sorry, like I said I'm a total rookie at rooting a device and most of the threads I've seen just don't make sense to me. In fact it took a little while for me to figure out how to even extract the files needed to root the device. I ended up downloading an extraction program to my PC. It was free and did a great job!

You've got to read the pages about universal root de la vega, that's how i managed to root my note 10.1 2014, and the result is very good. You should succeed in doing that cause i achieved to do it without being a native english speaker. After having root your device you can enable all the apps working with multi windows by using Wanam Xposed and multi window manager. You can use Gmd gesture as well, it's very useful to get all the ipad like gestures on the note. Good luck! (If you've got a pc with windows 7 you should install Cygwin64 Terminal to "make" your personal Rooted firmware).

Well I rooted using the link that I provided and then I downloaded the app MW app manager by Xperiacle from the play store since it was made for Samsung devices. All is running well to my knowledge.

Very Good! But i do think that it's a nonsens for Samsung to forbid the use of all the apps in multi windows when it works perfectly well with a mod... I just don't understand them!...

Multi-window is what really sets the Samsung Notes apart as productivity devices, being able to extend the apps that run under multi-window was my main reason for routing. There are a couple of apps that I use that aren't at the best in multi-window, but they still work for my needs, I don't need nannying!

They need to be careful because Windows 8.1 tablets do it perfectly on all apps out of the box. And for non rooting people who are looking for ease this just ain't easy.
Besides why start with the walled garden effect of Apple by preventing things that could/should work to just the rooters/jailbreakers!

Yes, and no. Yes, rooting will void your warranty. It will activate the Knox counter. However, after rooting, flash stock recovery. Be sure to update to the latest firmware before rooting. Updating may cause you to loose root. Be sure to freeze, not delete Knox apps after rooting. The update may look for those. There are a lot of differing opinions on this.

Ok now I'm second guessing myself on rooting my Note. Can someone please post a link so that I can unroot it? LOL
My desire at this point is to unroot and factory reset and setup as a new tablet. I do not like the fact that it will not update. Yes I knew this going in so I'm not complaining I'm just changing my mind.
The only reason that I rooted was to get 3-4 apps on multi-window that do not currently work on multi-window. The root process did fix that for me but I just don't believe it to be worth it in the long run so if possible I wish to undo what I've done.

Mickey, First I would try to install OTA Rootkeeper, backup root and then do a temp unroot. See if this allows you to update. If so, then restore root after the update.
OK, nix that - OTA Rootkeeper is not 4.3 compatible due to security changes.

Going back won't fix warranty problem, it's now done, cannot change the counter. I'd say not to worry about updates. When update is available, there will be many helpful posts here for rooted devices. I got the tablet on October 1st, rooted on first day root was available. And I updated it after that when Samsung released 3rd update.

Someone hit me with a list of apps only available with root.

Considering if I want to root moto x pure or not.
With what is being called a "Pure android experience" meaning no bloatware, I am not sure why I should root.

One word, ads! If you're used to being rooted and blocking them, they'll drive you nuts! They're everywhere ... obnoxious, obtrusive and just plain annoying!! So AdAway is a must IMO!(I understand folks gotta make a living, but man do I wish there was another way! LOL)

Adfree (my choice over adaway), titanium backup, better battery stats, HiFont (change your system font), hosts editor (easily add and delete entries9 in your hosts file, that adaway creates ), Tasker, Xposed framework and all the great modules it offers for customizing your device to your own preference, and root Explorer are some of my favorites.

If you're just wanting things to be as near to a Nexus as possible and that's all. Then you have no need to root. The only thing I have found the MXPE missing that is on Nexus devices is the Google Dialer. And Truedialer does all that the Google Dialer does and more.
Apps like the Camera on Nexus devices, can be installed from the Play Store.
I used to root, primarily for additional features that don't come with any device. Such as Titanium Backup. But Android Marshmallow will have app data backup. So no need to Titanium Backup going forward. I also used to root for Advanced Power Menu features. To be able to Reboot in a single click, instead of having to power off and on manually.
So far, I have no need to root the MXPE. Google finally has the OS in Marshmallow, to a point I can enjoy without added features from rooting.
You may want to look around the MXPE Apps and Dev forums. See the various offerings available with unlocking and rooting. You may want to give it a go. Me, I did unlocking and rooting, since converting and HTC HD2, from Windows Mobile to Android and all devices afterwards. I had my full of it and no longer desire to spend time and effort keeping up with or doing unlock and root activities. So I enjoy stock and with more frequent OTA updates in these times, I will let the OEM handle sending fixes and updates.

I've never owned a nexus, but I did, (with a great deal of help from you guys here) gut and rip an LG esteem, and then a Samsung galaxy s3, using CWM and recovery, a kernel with some ungodly name like "Lucifer kernel" (sounds like hot sauce on popcorn)
The functions I am looking for are as follows
- No bloatware
- Classic text messaging and classic phone dialer themes
- Custom Boot Animation
- Ability to delete all apps I don't use, (on previous phones, some apps I blasted were google, and there were lists of what I could un-install with no problems for each device)
- KIES support
Basically faster, lighter, smarter, better, cooler, and makes the world bend to my will.
Looks like I might have to roll up my sleeves again and earn how to root yet another device!
That is unless someone comes up with another genius "one click root-kernel-rom" install, but at this point I am fairly comfortable with ODIN panels, and self installing .zip, or .rar files.
Question: Has there ever been an android phone, that ships already rooted?

- No worries about bloatware. And if you feel anything is bloat, just disable the app. No root nessesary.
- Seems you would be able to find something in the Google Play Store, that does this for you. I think you'd be hard pressed, to find a Dev that will make something custom like that in a MXPE ROM. The Devs will probably be trying to use newer and better, rather than retro.
- You will need to unlock the bootloader, to apply a custom boot animation. That's not a "root" thing AFAIK, but you do need to unlock the bootloader. And then you will be able to apply a custom boot animation. I'm sure any maker of a boot animation will provide instructions.
- Just disable, no root needed. If you feel you absolutely must "uninstall", then you will need to get a custom ROM that has things you don't like already removed. But disable works very well.
- I don't know how you will find KIES Support. That's a Samsung thing. I dobut you'll find a way to get it working on the MXPE.

Out of everything on your list, you could *potentially* find some workaround or alternative that doesn't require root (or an unlocked bootloader), with the exception of a Custom Boot Animation. If you want that, then you must have an unlocked bootloader to do it. And if you're going to unlock your bootloader, you might as well just take it one minor step further and root your phone as well.
As for HOW to unlock / root... there *IS* a tookit to do it. Just look in the Android Development section of this forum, and you'll find it. Couldn't be easier.
You won't need to deal with all of that garbage of ODIN panels, flashing upgrades / downgrades / radios and applying patches in a very specific order, etc. The reason all of those complex steps exist for other phones is because those phones have locked bootloaders; and clever XDA developers had to find some obscure security exploit in order to gain root access. The Moto X Pure ships with an easily unlocked bootloader, which eliminates all of those complex steps to gain root access. It's about as close to the Nexus experience as you can get on a non-Nexus device. You essentially flip a switch, and get an unlocked bootloader. And once you have an unlocked bootloader, you can pretty much do anything you want with your phone without having to jump through hoops to do it.

My list goes:

Obviously I root for enhanced customization and ad removal.

so I downloaded WinDroid Universal Android Toolkit v2.5.exe, and am now looking at TWRP, and considering which applications to install after routing. My phone is supposed to arrive tomorrow I want to get ready! Thanks for the help you guys
