I recently purchased another GT-i9500 factory unlocked version and noticed that it is still on an earlier edition of 4.2.2. I plugged it into Kies and it tells me that the phone does not support initialization. I tried the OTA route and it tells me that the phone has the most current software.
I am on:
AP: I9500XXUBMEA
CP: I9500XXUBMEA
CSC: I9500OJVBMEA
There are two more updates listed on sammobile:
Country/Carrier Date Version PDA
United Arab Emirates 2013 October 4.3 I9500XXUEMJ5
United Arab Emirates 2013 July 4.2.2 I9500XXUBMG9
United Arab Emirates 2013 June 4.2.2 I9500XXUBMEA
I would at least like to get it up to XXUBMG9 as that was a much smoother experience on my previous i9500 than I am having on this phone with XXUBMEA.
Oddly enough the only difference in the phones is that one was white and this one is blue. The region was the same, but this phone refuses to update via official channels. The white one had no problems at all.
I am not sure if I want to go all the way to 4.3 as it seems like a mixed experience between users. It reminds me very much of the whole GT-i9100 upgrade to ICS debacle.
I am very familiar with Odin if that is my only route the only thing I would like to see is that I do not trigger any of the warranty counters.

Where did you buy? Even if you have never flashed JB4.3 or it is with 4.2.2 yet, make sure and check if waranty bit is allowed and it is not set to 1 (start in download mode). I mean, I got that message once I updated to 4.3 and get warranty bit to 1... Just to be sure the phone is not manipulated before buying...

I purchased the phone in Azerbaijan. They come from Dubai.
The phone has a factory status.
The binary shows official (via download mode) and the device status shows official as well in the Settings, About section.
It might be the problem with CSC.
Try to change your CSC to your corresponding country code, then wipe cache, install any Firmware (based on your country), then also wipe cache.
Now you will get OTA. Good luck

The CSC matches the United Arab Emirates CSC: XSG. In recovery mode it shows CSC: XSG Multicsc
It doesn't really matter which firmware I use as long as it has English in the language options. There isn't a firmware for the United States for the i9500...only for the branded models from AT&T, Verizon, etc. I travel so I always use the international versions of Sammy's phones.
The only thing I am curious about is that if I use Odin to install "United Arab Emirates 2013 July 4.2.2 I9500XXUBMG9" is it going to make the phone show as Unofficial?

I think it won't show as UnOfficial but am not much sure.
One thing i can assure is, if you are staying in USA and using UAE FW, you won't get any OTA's..
Can I flash an update through the stock recovery?

MEA (XSG) firmware is not supported by kies.
if everything is official, it must take the OTA, try to reset the phone and check the ota update

I have tried several times to get the OTA to arrive by factory restoring the phone from inside of the Settings app and also via recovery mode. I was discussing this with a friend and he checked his i9500 and it showed him as having 4.3 available to download. Same phone, same regions, same geo-location.
After a little bit of Googling I have finally been able to make my phone update Over The Air.
1. Put your phone into Airplane Mode.
2. Navigate to Settings, More, Applications, swipe (from right to left) over to All.
3. Scroll down to Google Services Framework. Select it.
4. Select Force Stop.
5. Select Clear Data.
6. Select Clear Cache (would not let me, but might work for you).
7. Turn on your Wifi with the Airplane Mode still enabled.
8. Navigate to Settings, More, About Device, Software Update. Select it.
9. Select Update (Check for Updates).
10. Install the now available firmware OTA.
Don't forget to disable Airplane Mode when the phone reboots from applying the OTA. I am now on XXUBMG9. Finally.
So out of curiosity I tried to see if the 4.3 was available to me since I was able to force the second 4.2.2 update and low and behold I cannot get it to acknowledge that a 4.3 update is available (even though it has been officially released). I tried forcing it once again using the same method as before to no avail. I have a Note 3 arriving tomorrow and will probably sell this one down the road.

Hi everyone
I wanted to ask you a question.
In short: Are Kies and OTA are connected? I mean if Kies reports it doesn't support my firmware so I won't get OTAs too?
Detailed: I flashed two weeks ago the German stock rom DBT for I9505 (MJ5).
The reason I did that is because I couldn't get updates via Kies with the last firmware, I had:
PDA: ME2, PHONE: ME2, CSC: MDB(BTU)
I understood ME2 stands for Nordic countries and the product code (BTU) is for England so I couldn't get updates through Kies.
I flashed the German stock rom via Odin and all went OK but afterwards when I connected the device to Kies I still had BTU in CSC:
PDA: MJ5, PHONE: MJ5, CSC: MJ5(BTU)
My question is why is it like that? Wasn't the CSC supposed to change to DBT?
And so the main question: Will this interfere me to get OTA updates from Germany when they will be out? Because Kies still keeps saying that it doesn't support my firmware.
Thanks in advance

I mean, when I updated to JB4.3 from 4.2.2 and rooted my phone, The knox counter incresed to 0x1; this was the reason I allways have thought OTA and kies updates notifications will never work again.
Anyway, In my case I can no more update by OTA or kies because I rooted the phone in 4.3 (or better, because of the knox counter increasing), but for buckups and so on I can use it normally, except I had to download kies version 3, the only kies version compatible with S4 JB 4.3, maybe you still have kies version 2.
Hi everyone,
first of all i hope it`s not a double thread, I could not find any BTU discussion of 4.3.
I`m getting really lost in this OTA / Kies compatibility over here..
My S4 was rooted now I`m trying to restore it to official state to make it OTA update compatible again.
The phone was bought in UK, GSM phone.
There was a matching firmware, which should be compatible for updates here, but i keep getting the same "Your firmware is not supported..." error message again and again.
Details:
AP: I9505XXUEMJ7
CP: I9505XXUEMJ7
CSC: I9505BTUEMJ8
Current binary: Samsung Official
System status: Official
Later on 2nd try:
AP: I9505XXUEMJ7
CP: I9505XXUEMJ8
CSC: I9505BTUEMJ8
Current binary: Samsung Official
System status: Official
So far after trying to help my problem with Google all I got, that I9505XXUEMJ7+I9505XXUEMJ7+I9505BTUEMJ8 is the latest official state and BTU is for the UK.
If someone could explain what is wrong here, I would be very happy.
Thanks.
Thread says the same, that I`m using the correct version
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265477
Is my question so stupid or is it an unique problem that I have so no one will reply?
Maybe I'm missing something here but have you reverted to stock, stock recovery and Triangle Away first. You cannot receive OTA updates or Kies if your device is rooted or has a custom recovery etc...
Yes, Triangle away done, stock rom, stock recovery.
Cool, is BTU the correct firmware for you? Are you on a different carrier there? Can you flash the stock ROM you want through ODIN? (gotta run for lunch but I'm sure someone better than I will help)
restock
put phone into download mode
open kies select firmware upgrade initialisation
enter model number and serial number in capitals
make sure both are correct you can find it on the box or under the battery.
Thanks everyone, I`m gonna do it all over again this evening. BTU is correct for me, its unbranded gsm unlocked phone from UK.
Edit: Boring day in job here.. redone the whole thing and it works now.
Thank you everyone, again.
Hi. Just a bit confused about my CSC. Currently my phone is on AP: I9505XXUEMKF with CSC: I9505BTUEMK5. As far as I was aware, this is an unbranded CSC for the UK and Ireland? (I am in Ireland). Now my phone was locked to a network but I got it unlocked and the CSC is now this. According to Sammobile, the latest firmware for BTU is I9505XXUENAA but when I connect my phone to kies, it says i have the latest update? Am I missing something big here?

1. The CSC appears close to ur firmware in Kies 3. Like in the 1st pic the CSC is XEU.
2. I9505XXUENAA no is an official update recognized by Kies how u can see in the 2nd pic. Kies 3 recognize that u have the latest update installed. If you want update ur phone by Kies you will have to wait new official update or u will have to use ODIN for install I9505XXUENAA otherways (SamMobile).
I tried that csc the other night, and it loads the Austria/Switzerland stuff on my phone by default......very useful here in the uk.
There is option to select uk/btu but it resets the phone, so Im not spending 3 hours setting up my phone.
Oh, and the mobile data speed seems so crap on that modem compared to mk9....
Thanks for your reply. Do you know whether unbranded phones get updates before branded??

Yes normally.
- Branded phones have to have custom firmware (coz they install their own apps/mods/rebuilts)
- Unbranded handsets can apply new firmware as soon as Samsung releases it (without changes).
phone details
samsung galaxy note 4 (snapdragon 805)
5.1.1
sm-n910f
baseband version: n910fxxu1coj3
I was following a guide but then came across a few questions
I am trying to update to 6.0.1 i need some advice about which rom to install as automatic update will not work. Little unsure what region rom to use i am from Australia and this phone model is not a Australian model i am guessing i should use one of the United kingdom ones?
A google search revealed N910FXXU1COJ3 firmware version for Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (Snapdragon) (SM-N910F) from region DBT what is DBT? is there a 6.0.1 DBT?
Just make sure the model number of the firmware matches that of your device. After you have installed it onto your device and just skip through the set up process. Then perform a hard factory reset but wipe the cache partition first. You should now be able to get firmware OTA updates on your device.

DBT is just the CSC code, its Germany. Best and most stable I would say is to flash the 6.0.1 united kingdom BTU one.

Download the firmware from here. Once downloaded extract it to pc.
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/111876/N910FXXS1DPK1_N910FBTU1DPI1_BTU/
Download odin from here. Version 3.10.6 seems to work better.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451&page=19
On device go to software info, tap build number 7 times until developer options is available. Go on developer options and enable usb debugging.
Open odin, click AP and insert the unzipped firmware.
Turn phone off, once off hold power + down + home until phone boots to download mode.
Plug phone into pc and wait until it says added in odin with a blue COM box. Click options in odin, check auto reboot and f.reset time. Uncheck repartition.
Then just press start, it will flash the firmware and reboot. The first time it boots it may take like 20 mins or so.
Yea I'm having a similar issue too. OTA and smart switch says that my phone is up to date but I know it is not according to sam mobile. My device is sm-n190s XSG and I flashed a stock 5.1.1. Rom months ago. I know I can update via Odin if I wanted to, but how do I update the normal way if I wanted to in the future?
Hello,
I am on BTU and still on April security patch. I bought an unlocked phone to get updates faster and everyone is getting the patches faster than me. Even the carriers (tmobile, att) are releasing the patches faster.
Which version should I flash to get the patches in a regular way? BTU sucks.
Thank you.
what region are you in ?
did you check out sammobile, they post regular updates as soon as they are published.
you can download them and flash with, odin, twrp flashfire.
I am in Europe for the moment.
I am on BTU no root

I live in the UK. I was also on BTU and bought the phone unlocked. I changed to H3G United Kingdom (H3G) as I was getting sick of there being no security update since April. I am also unrooted. To be honest I have not noticed much difference in the software, apart from the bootup screen. Last Samsung phone or tablet I'll be getting.
Same here
Also with H3G United Kingdom you have more regular monthly security updates?
