It only removes knox in system/apps not the actual knox in the bootloader. Nor does it reset thw counter.

Should I root now? I keep hearing about the latest update from Sprint...

So Sprint is pushing out their latest update which is supposed to be v4.3 with a bunch of apps that will prevent or cause problems for us root enthusiasts. I'm wondering if I should root with Sac now or forget about it?

Bad place to post a question. This had been discussed and people will troll you. BUT sprint pushed out 4.3 with knox bootloader. Which that you cant downgrade to older firmwares. I havent heard of such apps that make rooting difficult. Ive rooted 4.3 stock mja with the latest cf auto root successfully but it triggered the knox flag which voided my warranty. Its either your choice really whether you want knox bootloader or not. Either way your able to flash 4.3 rom if your on 4.2.2 but you need to add extra steps.

Thanks for your response. People can troll if they wish, they will get no response from me. Lol. But yes, that's a bit of a bummer that sprint would do this. I've heard that AT&T has already done this to some of their devices.

[Q] S4 Flashing/Rooting Questions

Apologies for the noob question but I just can't seem to find the answers.
Firstly, I am completely new to this and the magnitude of tutorials and threads all over is just confusing to me. What I want to know is I know rooting/flashing voids the warranty but what happens if say I need to send it back in for repair? How can I wipe every trace off and flash back to a stock ROM? I'm use to jailbreaking on iPhones and a simple restore obviously worked fine but this is obviously different.
Secondly, I read about the flash counter. Is there a way to reset this, un-root and completely stock the phone?
Thirdly, what about official leaked roms? AKA the official 4.4.2 from Samsung. Would this trigger the flash counter etc?
Thanks.
Its the knox warranty void counter you need to worry about. You need to read various topics about bootloaders/knox/triangle away, and kitkat problems.Dont do anything until you spend a week reading....lol
And you can thank me later.
Everything is undo-able except for the KNOX flag. It usually tripped by the installation of custom recovery.
cheers ~
Ah ok thanks for the information guys. I'll have a proper read up first.
I thought that you could revert the Knox flag via triangle away or is that not possible?
It is not possible. Triangle away resets the flash counter

Ah sorry for my misinterpretation as I thought the Knox counter WAS the flash counter. Is there ever going to be a way to revert it?

Hopefully someone will do it then. I'm tempted to flash and go to the GPE ROM but I think I'll wait till my Warranty runs out.

[Q] Upgrade rooted 4.2.2 ?

I am still on 4.2.2, stock rooted. I don't believe I have a custom bootloader. I have the nag message to upgrade to OTA 4.3.
What are my options at this point?
I'd like to keep root or reroot, if possible. I'd also like to make sure I can recover all my app settings easily.
Thanks!
Eph
If you want NAE 4.4.2 stock unrooted then you can just grab NAE tar and Odin it. If you don't care about Knox then you can root it and restore apps with data from titanium backup.

What if I *do* care about Knox?
Are there any options?
Ideally, I'd like to be rooted on the latest release without the Knox problem.
If you do care about tripping Knox for warranty reasons. Then there is no way to root Knox without tripping it on 4.4.2. Although you could keep your MF9 BOOTLOADER and flash the stock rooted NAE ROM by unknown force. Plus Odin NAE modem.

My warranty is with Square Trade. So, I guess the Knox issue would only come up if I have a software issue that requires me taking it to Sprint, right?
Can you elaborate on "Although you could keep your MF9 BOOTLOADER and flash the stock rooted NAE ROM by unknown force. Plus Odin NAE modem. ", please?
Thanks again.
Knox from what I know would only come up if you needed to ship your phone to Samsung for warranty reasons during the first year of purchase.
Use this method and you won't have Knox bootlaoder at all but will be on the latest KitKat update.

Rooting SGS4

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am really confused as always I used to find the thread for rooting my SGS4 but with the new firmware upgrade (Russia region), I can not find how to root it, and I am not upgrading it as it is important for me. Specification I am attaching (from similar updraded phone already) .
it should be PDA: I9500XXUFNF4CSC: I9500SERFNE3 MODEM: I9500XXUFNA6 (I can only find with PDA I9500XXUFNB4 in this site).
I would certainly appreciate your guidance in this matter, as only after being sure I had the needed .tar and odin, as I always root it with ODIN being the simplest and safest way, I always upgrade via KIES.
I was directed to post here.
Thank You in advance
Just use the normal rooting.
cf auto root or towelroot.
Firmware doesn't matter.
I rooted mine with towelroot

Use towelroot if you don't want to lose your warranty (because you will void konx )

Actually I have been reading about this Knox trigger, what does it mean? Isn't there a way to "untrigger" it afterwards.

knox flag 0x1 is a e-fuse which burns out after the software is mofidied... there is no way known of setting it back to 0x0.
Here in Poland, there was a discussion about knox flag 0x1 and warrinty with Samsung officials, as the flag is also triggered when trying to downgrade your original firmware, example from 4.4.1 to 4.3.... and on tweeter Samsung Poland stated that the warranty is not lost when the flag is 0x1.. but is better to have it untouched...
Thank you for the explanatiom as such it means it does not harm the phone or prevent future upgrades? If so I prefer to root as I had done before. I have no intention of downgrading but surely would like to continue upgrading. I always use my rooted phone with Knox frozen

Actually I had rooted it before with ODIn already when it had 4.4.2 again, so it is already triggered? Is there a way to check it? Also if it does not prevent future updates I prefer to continue with ODIN

One more question and really thank u for u r time.
Will it effect Knox tripping for the future updates? Besides warranty voiding does it have any other repercussions?

It will only affect your ability to downgrade......you won't be able to with official firmware. Upgrading is still possible and the Knox flag being triggered will not affect you upgrading but will never re-set the trigger.
Thank you so much

Yeah.
1. Towelroot is for root android 4.3 or higher.
2. You can use CF-Auto-Root without void the warranty coz you are using android 4.2.2. This is the first firmware of the Galaxy s4 and it hadn't KNOX. You can flash any custom recovery too without KNOX.

I think you are wrong. Go to download mode and add me one screenshot of what appears there. I added one screenshot when I was using android 4.2.2. I promiss u that rooting your device with CF-Auto-root your KNOX will be off anyway.

If you don't know what is the difference btw Knox and binary flash counter isn't my problem. One nice guide is in this website. Read and learn a little more.
* EDIT: This root process may increase binary flash counter, not change KNOX status. Read a little more about TRIANGLE AWAY too.

Cf root will trigger my knox though. I have used cf root and triangle away many times on my s2 and my s3. I know the difference between knox and binary. Believe me your 4.2.2 I don't think was mh6, must have been earlier 4.2.2. This is my download mode.

Sorry my friend but once again you are wrong! Knox started in 4.2.2
I know you are trying to help but YOU need to read more before giving advice, because if anybody listened to your advice they would void the knox counter.
