Confused about the whole SGS 4 "fever" - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I am new to XDA forum, but I am not so new to android. Before my s4 I possessed nexus 4. It will sound weird but I love TouchWiz. Here, I said it! When I had my nexus I was always in finding the best custom rom. My daily life was busy of constantly searching the best*apps*and roms for my phone. I am a civil engineering student and my job isn't related with android at all lol. Pure android isn't the thing which suits me, I understood that after I bought my s4.
Now, I don't feel flashing any roms, enjoying the s*apps*and using my phone as its supposed to be. I am more than satisfied with the TW customisation. I am curious, are there any people who are like me. Who prefer to stick to what the manufacturer had built in and take a full advantage of what they paid for. I am confused because I see a lot posts related with custom roms and mods. Are these people doing that for hobby or their job is related with programming or etc. I will appreciate any any comment on the topic. I am also curios about how people use their phone in their daily life. For example I use my phone for music, camera, planing my day, taking quick notes and sorting my shopping list, keep in touch with my close people, using social*apps*and etc. How about you?

well as far as i know only like 1% of the Sgs4 users flash custom roms or do anything root related
most people are pretty much happy with the whole TouchWiz deal
except those that get bugs, slowdown, crashes, etc. cause the updates containing those fixes take months to reach the handset unless you live in one of those regions that get updated first

I have a phone with such a good hardware and software that sometimes, I just dont know for what to use it. This is why i am a bit curios how you guys here are using your phone and for what most.

Exactly for what are you using TASKER ?

I didn't like the TouchWiz version.... it's just full of apps that I will never use...
But I confess that I'm kinda tired of trying ROMs with bugs that will let me down in some ocasions...
Oh well...I wish i had bought a N4 or N5...

Hey,
I believe the use depends of the person, I for myself use it a lot to play some games (Cytus, Time Surfer, Asphalt 8 and Tetris), watch videos, listen to music (emphasis on listen to music) and take pictures. Also just like all my devices it is my "dev playground", I play a little with it, try many new things. Currently I'm very happy with my setup, as I have a dual boot and can enjoy the smoothness of AOSP and the beauty/apps of Touchwiz . If you are unsure you can try doing that and then you can always change according to the day lol, like today I feel more TW, yesterday I already used AOSP lol.
Hope this helps a little...

I got a Google Play edition I9505, so I have stock 4.3 Android, no TouchWhiz features. I would like to have the Smart Stay, and maybe the Samsung Camera. Some of the other features I have made up for using Xposed. But having a Google Play phone, happy to know that I will be getting KitKat before Carrier Branded S4s will.

Nice to hear that. But the thing is that you are a dev and i am not. So you can use your phone on full capacity and squeeze every extra of it. I wont go so far and have a dual boot. Although i am rooted and have the latest 4.3, I regret now because my KNOX bootloader shows 0x1,

GS3 impressions v iPhone 4

Dear all,
I am a somewhat half-way happy owner of a new Samsung Galaxy S3. As an upgrade from the iPhone 4, I was welcomed to an open eco-system where could customize the user interface in a way that suited me perfectly. I love the way that apps integrate into the OS – the gallery and sending images through whatsapp, Line, and other photo editing apps is amazingly great. I currently use the stock JB4.1.1 firmware and I am rooted in order to quarantine bloatware. I use the premium version of Nova launcher. First impressions by this point are very good!
Now to the bad: Whether it is just my experience or not, this phone just doesn’t seem to be able to handle some of the most simple user case scenarios.
Take this example:
I am working, listening to music at the office and doing occasional browsing. But sometimes I need to be on the move to see clients in faraway locations. So I get up off my butt and get to the car, switch on the GPS and blue tooth and set it to my car stereo. By this point, I am trying to input an address while the phone is heating up, lagging like crazy and generally unresponsive. The music is jittering and the phone itself becomes unusable. I then have to restart the phone to return it to a usable state.
This occurs pretty frequently, not just in this user case, but sometimes doing the simplest of tasks: Music>switch to browsing>youtube video>back to browsing>change track>whatsapp>send photo>facebok: *bam phone starts lagging*.
This phone is inconsistent. Sometimes it works smooth as ever. When it does I’m smiling and I’m absolutely delighted. The large screen is so great. But quite frequently the phone is far less reliable than my old iPhone 4. Even that handset could handle GPS, music and browsing just fine. Perhaps it’s the way iOS handles multitasking? I am relatively tech savy and am aware of iOS multitasking not being “true multitasking” but in honestly, it just works. Particularly with the Tomtom app.
I am not here to bash the Samsung GS3, I’m just here to share my user experience with the hope that someone here can provide some advice on how to better optimize the system. I’ve spent many days and nights trying to love this thing: constantly making efforts to optimize this phone. It’s a process I much enjoy and I sincerely love the customizability, flexibility of the OS. In truth, if it worked as well as it does when it does work, it is far superior to iOS. But the fact that the experience frequent lags and has reliability issues, I honestly am starting to feel the itch to sacrifice that extra power for that reliability I had become used to in iOS. Yes it’s less powerful, yes apps don’t integrate well into the OS, but hey – it works all the time. All the time I’ve spent wasting trying to optimize the phone (as fun as it can be), is starting to fade in its appeal when I actually want to use this thing.
Does anyone have any recommendations as to how best to optimize this system? I’ve rooted this thing and have quarantined all the bloatware. I’ve yet to try roms. I’m waiting for my mini-sd card to arrive so I can backup all my stuff there then try “slimbean” and some stripped down versions of jellybean. But is my user case common among other GS3 users using stock roms? Is there something wrong with my phone? Or is there something I can do to enhance my experience?
Cheers and thanks in advance for your kind input!

Hi. Very interesting post.all though I've never really tried all the multi tasking stuff u do I could see how it could be frustrating. I too jumped ship from iPhone to gs3 a few months ago and I will never go back too Apple's controlled I junk .I find my gs3 to be the best..Sounds like you need to root since I'm rooted and on aokp ROM. The possibilities are endless with root .I have my phone dialed in too preform flawlessly and find no lag at all .I have had 10 to fifteen thing open and exsperiance no lag.well good luck with this issue..

Remove icon labels from the homescreen using nova launcher and it reduces lag, have no idea what that means as I don't use nova launcher and don't have any lagg with touchwiz.
I found this answer using a simple search on google
Edit: Try apex or prime launcher (found that out too)
SGSIII is known to have problems with multitasking. Try using the mod below if you want to keep using stock based ROMs.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1888081&highlight=multitasking
The GS3 does indeed have multitasking issues. And it does bother me, hence why I'm buying the nexus 4.
I mean, really? 1GB of ram on a top notch device from Samsung?
But then again, my GS2 didn't have multitasking issus like S3, even though it only had 768mb of ram.
If you want to customize your device further, there is an sweet app called Gemini, where you can choose which app to startup and when it should autostart.

This post got me interested since it comes from an unbiased user experience. So, here's what i did, i tried your experiences on my S3. I didn't experience any of the lag you are experiencing. I don't use whatsapp so i replaced it with skype and for satnav i tried navigation with google maps for an online test and TMN Drive (free offline maps to my country) which is based on NDrive. I also use exDialer and handcent to replace basic phone functions (calls and sms) but i kept stock browser.
I do notice my phone heating up a bit, nothing too special. This is normal and expected and only happens when i do heavy stuff. satnav = gps with maps streaming from a data connection heats it up a bit. Any game will also do it. Surprisingly, videos won't, and this includes browsing flash stuff.
Mine is an international i9300, running stock ICS, rooted. I'm also using Go launcher, since it's the only launcher yet that solves the constant launcher redrawing issues when multitasking. Although i'm rooted, i didn't make a single effort in debloating anything (it's just samsung stuff, don't have anything carrier related). By the way, Nova was just as bad as stock's touchwiz in that matter. Go is actually better in several other things so i'm not going back.
I've seen plenty of people saying poor stuff about stock's jellybean roms so i'm yet to jump on boat. It's not even available in my area too (not that would prevent anything), but it's working great + poor opinions all around so i'm keeping iCS for the time being.
To be honest, the only time i did have problems that would make me reboot my phone was when i tried a VERY buggy app once (not phone's fault since it even needed root to run) and the first week i had it because i got a faulty unit which got replaced. Ever since, i can't say i feel any of these issues and, like you, i'm a heavy multitasking user with a somewhat customized phone.
Since you're posting this, i believe you're still willing to push an extra effort to make that work so this is what i'd do: i'd try to make it similiar to mine, since mine works: Replace your launcher for Go launcher (it's totally free, no premium paid extra stuff) and even downgrade to ICS. If that doesn't fix it you may have a faulty unit like i had and that could be grounds to having it replaced for a new one.
Good luck with that and please ask me if you want me to run any more tests on mine, i'll gladly test whatever, so you know what results to expect from your phone.
Hey guys! I I am well impressed with the quick feedback I've received here! When I get my microsd card and begin experimenting with different roms, I will update my impressions. If there is no benefit though I will likely feel obliged to sell his thing.
So far I manage to make this thing usable by closing all apps before I open anything heavy handed like gps or a graphics intense game.
Thanks and keep the suggestions coming if you have any ideas. I appreciate it a lot.
Cheers

That was an amazing reply. I'll be back on here frequently and checking, but I will make a longer post again when I re-flash and experiment with other roms. I'll let you know how it goes and it would be great to benchmark against your own experience. But it's interesting you note go-launcher as the way to go. It was something I used almost right out of the box simply because it was so flexible. Looked elegant and had huge customization options. I especially liked its inbuilt search feature in the app drawer. I did read more about it however, and found that folks experienced lag. I too felt this and after researching a bit I replaced it with nova-launcher.Thing immediately "felt" more snappy, albeit my aforementioned issues above. The consensus seems to be that nova-launcher is good, with folks on the play store as well as on these forums vouching for it. It some cases I find nova launcher is the default used in certain popular custom roms. I'll take your advice though and will experiment more when I get my microsd.
My phone is the GS3 international version, quad core with 1gb ram.
The issue I think is the jellybean firmware. When I was on ics I had no issues whatsoever but now on the latest jellybean I get some lag, especially after viewing heavy pages on dolphin browser.

I think the problem with your handset is the Jelly Bean 4.1.1 update. It is well know that JB doesn't have a really good Memory management, hell, the code is all broke at the sources and the phone will work at around 70~75% of its potencial.
I suggest you should try one of the ICS Stock ROMS, remove all the bloatware and then try... I bet you won't regret it.
Why am I saying this? Well, I was having almost the same issues as you in JB, the phone was overheating and lagging even more than my wife's DEFY lol, so i wiped the phone, flashed ICS and now is all good... I can even Play Dead Trigger, listen to music and chat through whatsapp and any of the apps will lag or close like in JB...
You should give it a try to ICS
does your lagging relates to heavy data usage through 3g/wifi?
To my knowledge, I am not downloading a lot of stuff. At least nothing beyond that which is considered normal.

That sounds like a very plausible reason! I will try this asap! :good:
i think the touch wiz thingy needs loads of ram which leaves less room for other stuff , CM 10 is a nice rom bit buggy with camera but makes phone really fast and has no lags =]

I am pretty sure that your experience is not something I would consider as normal for gs3. I have tried what you had suggested and it seems to work fine. There is no lag and music is playing well. Phone is not overheating.
As I type : I have navigation activated, XDA app, Chrome Browser, Music playing in the back ground.
My set up is Rooted Stock DLJ4 JB ROM with FULL bloat ware activated and apex launcher.
Here are my suggestions.
1) Try chrome or Non stock browser.
2) Check your set up and Micro SD card, format of needed particularly if the music is stored on the card
3) Try a basic DLJ4 stock ROM or if you want only a rooted one there is one available which is only rooted stock ROM. In my view this talk about de-bloating is over rated and stock ROM works just as well.
4) Please do format your phone and start fresh and also format your SD card or consider changing it.
As for going back to iOS, do feel free to do so, but I bet that you will be back to using the Android in a couple of weeks

Hehe, I really don't want to go back to iOS. If I can get this to work as you guys have made it out to work, then this thing turds all over iOS for breakfast. But as I said, if these reliability issues persist - it's not a good look for android whether the experience is unique me or not.

[REQUEST] Media ROM for retired EVOs?

Hi all,
I have started this thread in hopes a developer sees the value in it (and our EVOs) and could please dedicate a bit in making some kind of ROM that would not have the calling features enabled, and all the junk removed, so that our EVOS can become bona fide media players... like what an iPod would be.
I used to have my phone as media player when it was in use, but I switched to (this crown jewel!) the Samsung Galaxy S3 and now this is what i use. However, it would be nice to put the EVO back in circulation as a media device...
So far, all the ROMS I see have a lot of features I think would be awesome in this kind of project (DOLBY, xPLOD, Beats, etc) and I always load PowerAmp as a music player (there is NO other compared to it), Chrome for browser and online videos, SwiftKey as keyboard and MX Player as video player.
I don't know how many people would find this useful but I am sure once out there, it would be highly sought after. Me, I just don't have the time to undertake learning how to cook ROMS, what with my Degree almost done, work, family and kid, well, I hardly have time for myself...
Thanks, and if someone DOES come up with something we all like and can use, I will be more than glad to host it and all needed files and mods for it.
Best,
Mord.
Run cm7 nightlies and freeze the stuff you don't need. Most mods are compatible dsp or beats work battery is great. And then is from experience using my og as a gps and music player in my truck constantly

Snap yo..... I actually did this for educational purposes just to see what it would work like, it was incomplete but it worked decent enough. I was just fooling around trying to get familiar with cooking and breaking open apks for themeing and junk. I think I am have to give it another go, but based on my preference for a base, I don't think success will be much. Either way, I'm gonna mess around with it and see what I can do. No promises though.

samsung vs google editions

hi there,i have just a little question for who have more experience than me
exactly whats the difference between the 2 rom style?
yeah i know that there are lots of differences but my question was born because yesterday i finally decided to try a google edition rom cos i see that there are much more builders for google than the classic tw
the only reason i find its because its very very light ,doesnt have all samsung programs different setting (lol i thought i come back to my old Leo hd2 ) but i also noticed that all sensors dsnt work (if they work im so sorry but i kept only 10 min google edition cos i prefere the stock look)
so..considering this i dont understand why google edition has so many fan for me its look a sort of downgrade but i suppose there are benefits that i dont see or dont understand on my own
i dont want cause flames so give ur opinion or facts its the same its just to talk about
ps: sorry for english i always write without read what i wrote
For me there are some reasons to use the GE:
1) It isn't that huge and hasn't these samsung features i never used cause they are all a bit buggy.
2) No Bloatware
3) I love the Vanilla look
4) I get minimum +1 hour Screen On time, so its much more battery friendly
5) much more smoother and faster (Antutu Benachmarks of +2000)

hi there,i have just a little question for who have more experience than me
exactly whats the difference between the 2 rom style?
yeah i know that there are lots of differences but my question was born because yesterday i finally decided to try a google edition rom cos i see that there are much more builders for google than the classic tw
the only reason i find its because its very very light ,doesnt have all samsung programs different setting (lol i thought i come back to my old Leo hd2 ) but i also noticed that all sensors dsnt work (if they work im so sorry but i kept only 10 min google edition cos i prefere the stock look)
so..considering this i dont understand why google edition has so many fan for me its look a sort of downgrade but i suppose there are benefits that i dont see or dont understand on my own
i dont want cause flames so give ur opinion or facts its the same its just to talk about
ps: sorry for english i always write without read what i wrote

There are plenty of videos online directly comparing the two. Basically though, if you find Touchwiz ugly and irritating but like the S4 hardware then Google Edition ROMs/hardware are a godsend. The hardware does all work on the Google Editions as far as I know but there is no TV app and (obviously) no gesture based commands on Google Edition devices. This doesn't mean there aren't third party apps to cover most needs though. Unlike the old days of Cyanogenmod building from AOSP (which resulted in crap quality photos) the difference is negligible between TW and GE ROMs in terms of the output; though if you like the TW camera app the stock Google one might seem very basic.
Personally I can't wait for a means of converting my S4 to a 'real' Google Edition with OTA updates as I hate the very IDEA of all that gimmicky TouchWiz crap existing on my phone. I'm currently running the ODIN flashable version of GE which I've had no problems with as of the past few days.
I also own an HTC One so it would be tough living in a Touchwiz only world with an S4 when I have Sense 5 next to it. My One running pure, stock Sense 5.0 and I love it so it's not that I'm a fan of stock Android as such, I just think Samsung are clueless when it comes to nice design. Now with my S4 running Google Edition it is very hard choosing between the two devices!

For me there are some reasons to use the GE:
1) It isn't that huge and hasn't these samsung features i never used cause they are all a bit buggy.
2) No Bloatware

1) but with a nice extSD many space problem are resolved...i dont use my phone as an ipod so i dont have music files, only big games but coming from hd2 with ext4rom partittion have 4 or 5 gb free its incredible hehehehe of course my sd is full of roms and some ps1 rom for the emulator (im playing again all my old final fantasy and its AWSOME)
2) i still dont know what is it so i cant say nothing lol
3) nothing to say its personal
4) so its really longer than tw? i read there was many battery problems expecialli for 4.3 but also in 4,2.2 that can be very nice for me
5) i didnt see that...looks pretty the same but with antuntu i get 400point less than the omega rom v7 (no overclock or strange things)
aniway...i dont see much bugs in samsung apps...i kept the stock rom for 1 month and was perfect, the same for omega
i like have lots of stupid stuffs from samsung like the temperature and humidity sensor (just to say : hahaha ur phone cant do it )
i think when samsung will release the Api for the new sensors will be better because we have theme...why dont find a way to use better than samsung let u do?
another thing...i tested only 1 google rom but...multiwindow isnt present right? its very usefull when i want to play and girlfriend wants to talk on whatsaap so she see me always online heheheheh
Bloatware: useless installed apps from Samsung you can't delete (ofc with root you can) cause of this and more Samsung Roms are more than 1GB big, GE just 300+MB
The Battery from 4.3 was terrible but the 4.2.2 (Jamal's v9) is awesome!

Nope, these are Samsung features i meant in 1). Never used them, like Smart Pause etc.
These aren't available for the GE
There is one thing I don't like in GE, too
I miss the Cam from Samsung.
Hope they port a (functional) version!

[Q] I seek help and guidance

Hello everybody,
I am terribly sorry to do this to you, but I'm writing this on a very crappy tablet as my PC has run into quite a number of problems. That makes it very hard for me to dig for the info and my phone should arrive tomorrow. Anyway, now that I have somewhat justified this mischief of mine, I would like to ask you, the G2 people, a few questions. As I stated earlier, I ordered a G2 and I would like to root it and slap a good AOSP/Stock Android/AOKP/Nexus-ish ROM on it as quickly as possible. I have to do this over a friends PC, so I should tell him which files to download in order to make his life easier. Now, let's get to the questions. I live in Croatia (which is a part of the EU) so will I get the d802 variant of the phone? Which ROM would be most suitable for my needs, which are GTA San Andreas (when it comes out, trading a kidney for an early release), listening to music, a stock android experience and good battery life? The camera could come in handy because of all the holiday events taking place in the near future, but good camera quality isn't that much of a factor. Again, I am very sorry for asking these questions. If I had a normal PC, I would have searched for the answers myself, but I am desperate here. I'm going on a trip to visit my friend soon and I'd love to go there without the LG software and also without my phone getting stuck in bootloops or with bad battery life.
Thanks in advance!
Hi!
There's two paths:
Modding the stock rom
Benefits
Stable, fast
Excellent camera and audio quality
Bug free
Cons
Takes some modding in order to get it the way you like, if you like AOSP
You don't get the quick pulldown live tiles function from AOSP no matter what you do..
4.2.2
Recommended mods:
ROM and mods
StockROM from g.lewarne as a basis is a good choice
iOS7 navbar, looks just really nice in general
iOS7 icon pack 'Ios7 Flat' (dig around a bit for it) in conjunction with Unicon - an Xposed module (on Play Store) for nicer icons. Yuo can also use other icon packs of course. I say this because LGHome is recommended instead of ie. Nova Launcher, it's just smoother and nicer on the G2.
xdabebb camera mod for even better camera quality (the original app has its flaws)
Volume increase mod, the sound on stock is a bit low
V4A Viper4Android for even better sound
Freeze any unneccecary LG bloat through Titanium Backup (there's no need deleting them as the space isn't available anyway
iFont - changed system font to Helvetiva Neue, if you want the KitKat look you can change it to a light version of Roboto.
AOSP rom:
I've heard that Vanir rom is the smoothest atm
Pros:
4.4.x
AOSP apps
Lightweight
Cons
Unoptimized kernels
Not better battery time or performance
Feels rough around the edges
The implementation of things like the LED and 'knock off' and 'knock on' functions are not very good (you will learn to love them!)
audio quality is very bad, aosp camera also. there is a port of the LGcamera.apk, but it is very buggy unfortunately. Will make you upset very fast!
Thank you, you have been very helpful! I just might stick with stock for a while, at least to the end of the holidays.

Good luck with that, my preferred choice is stock, even coming from a Nexus 4, and being very design-concious

I couldn't resist, I simply had to flash stock Android. OmniROM first boot happening as I'm typing this.

Please write some opinions on the camera quality of OmniROM. I'm a new user as well, still on stock though and I'm curious as to how the camera quality is in OmniROM.
Pozzz.

I've spent quite much time with many ROMs and the best I find in CyanogenMod 11. I get 0% battery loss over the night. I get the latest software with best features of CM. I get above 31,000 Antutu benchmarks on this ROM and GTA San Andreas works flawlessly! Don't forget to use the latest TWRP 2.6.3.4 and you're good to go with this amazing phone. You can even get the quick remote and the LG camera apk on CyanogenMod. Good luck!

Slimkat doesn't have many issues... its very nice small and stable as well. instead of knock off use the navbar ring to set lock screen on a vertical swipe knock off problem solved until it is fully implemented. knock on works perfect. Great KITKAT rom.
stockmod rom is EXCELLENT no other way to describe it - my only issue has been audio quality when playing on my stereo through jack is very crackly...

[Q] How do you keep yourself content with your Note 3?

Hey there.
So I honestly am pretty bored with the Note 3. Maybe it's because I've come from phones with ROMs out the rear end to flash or it could be where I don't do anything too special with my phone (homescreen setups, themes, etc).
I flash ROMs and all that, but I still find myself bored with the phone.
So I ask, if you were ever bored with your phone, without moving to a different device, how did you get yourself content with your device again?

To be content with my Note 3 first I had to be thankful I even own one. Just like anything I own. Be happy with what you got because some people are happy to just have water.
I had to work really hard to get anything I suppose just gives me a different perspective in things.

Nova Launcher helps break the stock monotony for me. I'm a serial rommer, so we'll see how long it takes me to get mad with not romming my Note. Lol

Continually checking to see if the bootloader has been unlocked so I can finally run cm11 on what should be a rocket ship of a phone but isn't. Because samsung.
Im content just to have such a bad ass phone that can haddle pretty much and app or game I throw at it. I had the Note 2 for a year and then i switched to the HTC One. It was an awesome phone with awesome sound but I missed the big screen. My note 3 is stock rooted and I love it. I install a new clock widget every now and then but my phone is mostly stock. All I need is Kit Kat.

Don't you mean "because Verizon"?
But yeah, other things that keep me content with my phone besides gaming is Xposed MODs, and SNote for keeping score for Spades in real life...making use of it as "useful" rather than "playful"
II picked up a dev edition in dec, Which I have replaced with a retail. I'm still learning how to best use all the features. Like i just learned how to use the Pen Window today.
I also found a Sansung translation app for written and speech. Was having a blast with this and a Spanish speaking friend. He was speaking to his relative that knew very little English. Well he would start speaking in Spanish to his relative then started steering the conversation to saying stuff about me. He signaled to start recording at one point. When his relative responded he signaled stop, then i played it back in English for me. Well i put on a "shocked face" at what was said, then preceded to record and "Angry" response back and have the translator cuse him out in Spanish. :highfive:
Vudu - Allows me to easily access and watch my collection if I happen to be stuck with nothing to do away. The larger screen also make it more enjoyable.
Music - I love the Adapt Sound. I believe also on the S4. It's basically a hearing test built into the phone, that adjusts the audio after it is complete specifically for your headset and ears. Makes my music on the phone a lot nicer to listen to. Also helps to have a large collection to rotate through.
Specific Apps
Remote control for LG TVs - I can control the TV using the phone and not have to reach for or look for the remote. Oh and it can take a snapshot of what's on the screen ATM. Great for sharing stuff with family & friends.
TiVo Remote - Manage most features of my TiVo without having to move into the menus on the TV.
Next launcher. Allows me to change the look occasionally.

haha! That too. But because samsung for building touchwiz that can sometimes still suck up all 2.3 gb of available ram.
Wanted to add movies are awesome in the bed and bathroom especially lol in my Note 3.

Next launcher and xposed (with plenty of modules installed). Those two things combined offer so much customization your head will spin. With next launcher it's so easy to swap out different things... like change all folder icons, and then change the dock background.
I'm only rooted - still rockin the stock ROM and have no desire to flash a ROM.
I pick up my galaxy nexus and have to squint. This makes me run back to this phone.

While we do have some great devs on here, overall development is pretty thin with the locked bootloader. But what we have is pretty nice. Mix in xposed, a good home replacement launcher, and an icon pack or two... This phone is still pretty sweet.
