Hello, I have a Google Nexus 7 tabled and I like it very much. The only flaw I see is the screen colors but for budget tablet is is ok.
I have a question: Does Nexus 7 supports any microUSB to HDMI cable ?
I have read numerous posts in the internet about how Nexus 7 does not support neither HDMI or OTG - but I have a OTG cable and it works great, mice, keyboards, flash drives and even a 1 TB external hard drive work great on the tablet.
So I bought this cable: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-1-5ft-1-5...912&pid=100015&prg=1085&rk=1&sd=230893786628&
but after I received it - I can't make anytong to make the cable work.
does anyone have any info on how to make it work or is is a possibility at all to have HDMI output on Nexus 7.
thanks.
As far as I know, n7 doesn't support any kind of HDMI out. As they have labeled that item as for the nexus 7 they are wrong... Correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope, sorry but there is no way. Unless no way known to me...and believe me, I made a very wide research!
I have a micro usb to HDMI adapter, I think its a MHL plug. However it doesn't fit.
The Nexus 7 does not support HDMI, MHL, or any type of direct connect video out, period. The microUSB port can be used for USB OTG duties: keyboards, mice, USB Flash memory devices, even USB hard drives if necessary, but not any form of video output.
NEXT!!!
No offense, but did you blindly buy this product or blindly buy this product?

I wish it did, but sadly it doesn't. I knew that before I bought one, though.
Pairing it with the YouTube app on my PS3 is pretty awesome however.

The PCI express lane is located near the sata 3gbs port, unfortunately Google didn't give us any 6gbs ports, really sucks because I wanted to use an SSD.

Actually I did, I've been eyeing the Nexus 7 for a couple of months, reading up on it and looking at reviews. However I never read about HDMI out on it until it occurred to me today.
A reasonable question posted on XDA sometimes receives snarky responses. Not all of them are with ill intent, but this (XDA forums) isn't the most friendly environment. That little ribbing was quite nice though
Just get a MK802 and flash CyanogenMod on it.
You could use a custom rom like the Android transporter to mirror ur nexus 7 to a screen.

I am pretty sure the N7 has the hardware to do MHL but they havent given us the cookies yet.
It was even used in the keynote for the N7:

same happened to me. i bought it right after watching the keynote this guy mirroring the device... too bad i dont know how he did it !!!!!!! .. money back!!!
ilegal marketing !! HAHAH
Well that's quite interesting and I'll be the first to admit when I'm apparently wrong - I'd never seen that video before but it is quite obvious there's some video out going on, and even if it's just mirroring it would still be better than the "nothing" we currently have with the N7. Hell, my laptop has a 1280x800 screen in it so it's a perfect match when I remote in with the N7 anyway... would be nice to do things the other way around.

After watching that full intro video I'm suspecting what they had there was a modified Nexus 7 just for that capability, aka a demo testing unit, but who knows what's possible at this point.
I'd suspect if Google has intentions of a new Nexus 7 "upgraded version" sometime this year - that's the big hope, of course - that perhaps we'll see some extra goodies thrown in for good measure.
But when you really take the big view of things I don't think we'll see a Nexus 7 updated with a) any form of expandable storage (sadly), b) a back camera, c) a video/MHL/HDMI capable output, and d) a change in screen resolution.
If you watch that intro video they are very specific and precise in stating they wanted to make a "perfect content consumption device" and if all you do with the Nexus 7 is "consume content" that means it's going to remain basically as it is right now, perhaps with optional models for more storage (64GB will probably be the max), and they may even stick with Nvidia for a Tegra 4 version, I don't know but I can speculate pretty readily given what we do know from the current 1st gen Nexus 7 models and what Nvidia has announc--errr, leaked about the Tegra 4 so far.
Yes, I do love this tablet, but also yes I wish it did just a tiny bit more in some respects like the ones I pointed out above. I wish the dock pins supported actual data transfer instead of just being charge-and-audio-out capable, but that's just me I suppose.
Regardless, considering I paid $25 for this Nexus 7 of mine, believe me I'm one damned happy camper these days, especially with 4.2.2 now out and battery life even better on the stock kernel if I want it.
Allowing data over the pogo pins would lead to mass corruption. Some dope tries to pogo a rom, bumps their device, done.

As if you can't have a kid (if you have any) or a pet (as if you have any) or you yourself can do some idiot move and rip a microUSB cable out of the device when you're doing the very same thing?

They could mirror their nexus 7 display because it had hdmi out on their unit. They didn't add this feature on the nexus 7 because this would raise the price of the nexus 7.

MK808 is much faster. Highly recommended! Plays games like a boss.
However there is no video out capabilities on the N7 in a last ditch effort to shave off costs.
They are working on wifi streaming... but nothing yet.

its not that i want to beat anyone my friend , its just that its a reliable device , its just that this device can connect my laptop to a open wifi router from a very far location or overcome weak router signal too... very useful in my location. im asking if this is possible on a nexus 7 tablet. and if it is ill buy one maybe after the google I/0 ...still waiting for their announcements if there will be a new nexus 7 device.
The device seems to have a magnetic base, I don't know if you'll get trouble with it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I don't know about the specific device compatibility, so I can't help you there.
But I can make a comment about long-range WiFi, having fooled with it a bit.
(My comment about 10 dB was due to the output power of the Alpha device being 1W; 100mW is the regulatory limit in lots of places... the OP in the other thread hacked his N7 so presumably he was at 100 mW transmit power even if his ERP was high due to +16 dBi patch antenna)
If it is for a fixed installation, you should prefer antenna directivity (pattern gain) over transmitter power for a number of reasons:
- Tx power doesn't improve Rx power, but antenna gain helps *both*. To put this another way, you need a good antenna to hear (Rx) a 100 mW router at distance anyway; because the antenna-to-antenna path is reciprocal, this means the router will also hear you (your Tx) just about as well, so the extra Tx power buys you little other than unwanted attention. (The only downside is that high gain antennas need to be pointed carefully; that's why I mentioned "fixed" installs)
- If the Fresnel Zone between your station and the router includes lots of other WiFi installations all their beacon traffic will pollute your channel - especially because your device will be blasting them at high power with Probe packets (which cause even more traffic in the form of probe responses). And of course, any stations on your channel will have their traffic competing with yours (causing your station to detect lots of collisions during Rx). The only way to improve this is to use a progressively higher gain antenna (a narrower beam lobe) so that fewer stations are in your primary beam lobe.
- The best way for you to get noticed is to blast a bunch of stations with excessive power - you should try to use the minimum power which still results in reliable communications. Not only that, but you mention an open router - meaning that 100% of your Tx traffic will be readable by unrelated stations in between you and the open router.
(Now having said all that, it occurs to me that you might be already using it with your laptop ... so you don't care about any of these considerations)
good luck!
To answer the original question, the external wifi will work with the n7, provided that you are running a kernel that has been compiled with the needed drivers. Check the "pwn pad" thread in general section for a user named m4xxxed0ut. He has a kernel for this very type of thing. Not sure if your model is supported, but it is worth a look.
Edit: Here is a link directly to his kernel thread.

Just looked and his kernel does indeed support your model.

Is anyone aware of a plug in ir blaster (hardware) that will work with the Nexus 7?
A device that plugs into the micro usb port would be sweet if it can be combined with a universal remote control app.

There's the commercial product "Logitech Harmony Ultimate Hub" (not sure what it uses to talk to tablet - either bluetooth or wifi I guess).
Then there's the silly gadget I'm working on, which only needs about 10 years of software development to be useful .

So this is something that I would really like to do but have put it off for a few reasons.
I decided that a Nexus 7 car install is the best option for having Android in the car. At first I considered buying an App Radio 3 and using AR Unchained to just mirror my phone on the head unit. But after learning that Pioneer's AR3 head units are less then stellar I decided to abandon that option. Besides, who wants to connect their phone to their stereo everytime they get in the car?
Next I considered buying one of those Chinese made head units with Android 4.2 but for some reason they don't seem to make any that fit my car. Not to mention that after seeing some pretty decent reviews of them on this forum I still feel leery about buying one.
So that leaves me with the only option of installing a tablet in my car.
Right now everything in my car is completely stock. I figured the best way to connect the tablet to my car's speakers is through the replacement of the factory stereo through an aftermarket one, possibly the Pioneer DEH-80PRS which I'm currently considering.
This poses a few problems, the current stereo is a double din so I have the space to work with. However I would have relocate the aftermarket stereo somewhere else. Either behind the tablet like some others have done or in the glove box, something I really don't want to do.
But by doing this I would lose access to the physical volume control on the head unit, I'm trying to figure a way around this but I haven't come to any reasonable conclusions as of yet. I do have steering wheel controls so this is an option, however it doesn't really help much when you have a passenger that want's to control the volume.
Next is the sound quality, I was really hoping that I could plug the Nexus 7 in the head unit through the USB port and have audio transfer that way like with an iPod. But from what I've researched online it seems that this is not possible? Atleast not without a custom ROM anyways, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Next issue is power, I've heard alot of problems keeping the tablet charged in the car. Is there a way to keep it charged even while using it?
If I opt for a DAC that plugs into the Nexus 7 either through USB or the headphone jack, how will I keep the DAC powered?
Thanks
Wow, not one reply...
I've thought this over and over with the plethora of android devices that hang around my house. The best way I think, is to buy a midrange amp with 4chans and run a splitter from the 1/8inch jack.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Keep in mind that physically installing the tablet in the car without an option for removal will most likely expose it to extreme heat and cold which is highly detrimental to the battery health!
Throwing out bad batteries is terribly damaging to then environment in the case you would like to get a new device also.
Please consider having a stand/deck/clamp that allows you to remove it when you leave the car with you; as this will prolong the life of the battery and keep toxic garbage out of landfills!

Which version Nexus 7? 2012 or 2013, TIMUR's Rom seems to be the one everyone is using for a fixed install. I am in process of doing a fixed installation for a 2012 Nexus 7 in my weekend fun car, I am using Timurs Rom, I have a Direct HD Tuner and an app a guy on Rootzwiki made for it, I am using a Behringer UCA202 USB DAC to handle the audio.
I too have the Volume control challenge and I don't have the steering wheel controls, the other piece is with the HDTuner, the audio bypasses the Nexus for the tuner so I needed some sort of adjustment. I am still working it out, but many opt for the Clarion EQS746, and I have seen several other brands that seem to be the same..
I am curious how you plan to handle all the integrated info on your radio (Trip, Oil Life, etc) I know that is a stopping poitn for me on my 2007 Malibu MAXX SS, not sure how I duplicate that info and I think if I took the radio out completely I would have other issues

I'm not worried about losing the driver information center in the Malibu. If I really wanted to keep it I could buy a metra double din dash kit that includes the driver information center module but I don't feel like spending $240.

I don't really live in an area that has wild temperature swings. My car's windows are already tinted and I use a shade on the front windshield so I'm not too worried about it.
I'm more worried about thievery, making it removable especially in a 2006 Malibu would require some sort of modification to the bezel.

Timurs fi kernel + services (awesome and worth the 43.00, free in may iirc)

I wasn't aware that Timur's rom was available for the 2013 Nexus 7 yet, I thought it wasn't going to be available til May?
The aftermarket head unit makes it's easier to integrate into my car's audio system without having to buy a whole lot of extras. The car has 104k miles, I'm not sure I wan't to do alot of modding to it at this point.
Plus, the head unit would serve it's purpose when I have passengers that wan't to connect their phone/mp3 player to listen to their own music. You can't do that with a tablet, atleast not that I know of...correct me if I'm wrong.
I'd also have bluetooth hands free calling with the head unit, not that I'd ever use it anyways.

I have factory hands free and I only use it occasionally (and I drive a stick!) I may get a parrot kit or similar, but undecided so far. The uca202 has an additional input that could be used for it. You can pick up the dac and amp for about 150 on Amazon and not have to worry about stashing it somewhere.
I can't argue your points about passengers, I usually just music we all like anyway.
Timurs kernel is up and running, there is a thread in general I believe. You have to pay now, 35euros with WiFi Mac (kernel linked to that device only) or 50euros w/o mac.
I was using it on the WiFi version, but returned it because Verizon had the lte on sale last weekend for 49.99! I contacted timur and he changed it up for me from wifi to lte within hours!. Been a few updates so far and he sends out emails with notification and a change log.
I think it was worth the 43.00 I spent for it, allows me to test everything, and get most of my stuff figured out.
I'm just stuck on a mount that would look good, I don't want to hack up my dash, because in 2 years I will probably update to something newer. I bought a cheap snap on case, but it fits too well!
All together I have spent only about 230 including the tablet. (I had the amp installed already)

$230? That's all you spent?! Perhaps maybe I'm over thinking this, that $49 you spent for the Nexus 7 LTE, obviously that was a two year contract right?
The reason why I'm thinking of buying just WiFi version is because I have a GSIII with a grandfathered unlimited data plan back from 2010 when Verizon was still offering unlimited data. My idea was to just tether that to the tablet considering that it's unlimited anyways. What solution did you use to keep your tablet powered while in use? It seems like that's the biggest PITA from what I've read.
Would you mind taking some pictures of your install if it's not any trouble?
Thank
This is what my dash looks like to give everyone an idea of what I'm dealing with,

Thank
This is what my dash looks like to give everyone an idea of what I'm dealing with,
I'm trying to figure out what I can do to mount the tablet infront of the bezel rather then behind it because it's too much of a hassle to take that bezel off.

I can post pics, it will probably be a few weeks though, I'm waiting on some warranty service behind the climate controls so I don't want to install only to have the dealer screw it up.
67 shipped w/tax for nx7 on contract. (If you have unlimited probably should get wifi only)
42 joycon exr
30 for usb dac
30 in cables
15 for power supply (100w converter)
5 for hard plastic case from China
12.50 for hdpe to build a box behind for storage
43 timurs kernel
10 gnd loop isolator
10 for a amp turn on delay
Plus a few more small things i can't remember.
In comparison I was going to get an appradio3, but that was almost 600 after everything i would have needed, plus the mirroring was flaky even with official adapters for my note 2
Timurs kernel + otg charge cable + power supply = charging nx7 + usb peripherals
I plan to build a box the same size the factory radio, put a spacer between it and the hard plastic case and I will just snap the tablet into it, plug in the cable and go. Timurs kernel lets you hotplug audio devices so no rebooting required.

Search for subaru nexus 7 install, there is one where they built an acrylic case, mounted a case to it and clipped in nx7. I plan to do the same, only the case will be on the outside so I can easily remove it.

5.1 surround sound setup
I'm doing similar in a 04 f150 .. Instead of my headphone jack I'm using the HDMI audio. Have a HDMI audio extractor, that has digital audio outs , I'm running the fiberoptic audio to a small surround sound decoder, 5.1 surround, the decoder has 6 sets of RCAs I'm running to the amplifiers. I'm using a small Bluetooth keyboard with track pad to control volume and what not.. The hdmi audio extractor has a HDMI out put also so I can add a monitor or a projector for a mobile drive-in experience. Between the tab, the slimport, HDMI audio splitter, surround decoder and keyboard, I have about 320-350 invested. Not bad considering the resolution, the navigation, and everything else you'd spend well over a grand or more with any alpine and not have near the capabilities. And of course I have unlimited data with sprint on my phone so a WiFi hotspot keeps the tablets fed with data

shadowmyst87,
Do you have a like as to the steps to remove the bezel on your malibu? I have no idea how to remove that piece on my 2007 and the dash looks the same..
Thanks
