It seems at this point you won't be able to mirror your device without some additional hardware/software combo. Google wants you to start a google hardware family, which isn't out of the question if the price of the Q comes down some and there's some functionality that makes it worth it.
As it is now though everything I have with a screen talks to everything else with a screen but its still a bit haphazard to serve media in any different direction.
Hope this makes sense lol!
Luckily my lg smart tv has dnla so can stream from macbook / nexus over WiFi to tv.

I only used my nexus 7 for like 2 days because I returned it due to battery problem and I didn't have enough time to check to stream to my smart TV (DNLA). My phone can stream to my smart TV (DNLA). I'm waiting for nexus 7 to be in stock again. In the mean time, how did you get your nexus 7 to stream to your smart TV?

How did you get your phone to stream to your smart TV over dnla? The only way I can see if using the All Share app, but that doesn't mirror the screen, basically I want to push my games on to the big screen if possible...

You can use either of these (available in play store) if your TV supports DLNA connection.

I am mainly looking to mirror the screen so I can play games etc on the big screen.

To do what you are saying requires a Mobile High Definition link ~ aka an MHL connection which in turn goes to the HDMI port on a TV. Earlier cables (Samsung Galaxy S) could connect to a VGA port on a TV.
Unfortunately the Nexus does not come with any MHL capability otherwise we would by now be hearing of an MHL cable that you attach to the power socket (as is done on Samsung devices).
DNLA only links media files, as in Music, Photo's and Video. For that you need dedicated software to stream which has already been mentioned above.
Isn't possible any app to catch on a Google TV device and vice versa kind sling box for androids devices?

Android is lacking here big time, apple has airplay through apple tv to show the screen on the tv and play games etc throught it, all wirelessly.
Android needs this... and fast!
VNC client and server apps exist, so if you want to display your screen on an android enabled TV you should be able to do it with VNC?
Its a WIFI enabled Smart TV I have... can use all share on s2 to share videos and music to it, but cannot mirror your screen, its something they need to resolve soon.
What can I do if my TV doesnt have DNLA, and the N7 doesnt support MHL.
Is there any other way? USB to VGA cable?

It's nothing to do with Android it's ASUS and Google who are lacking.....
You have the S2 and that can link direct to your TV using as you say Allshare and for anything else you would use an MHL adapter as the S2 has MHL built in.
If the Nexus had an Allshare alternative built in and DLNA support you would be able to show media files on your TV..... and again if the Nexus had MHL built in you would then be able to use an MHL adapter and mirror your Nexus screen with your TV.
I'm not talking about the nexus in particular I mean android as a whole needs some kind of solution or they are going to fall behind. Our should I say they'll never catch up on that regard. Can you point me to am mhl adapter to check out out

The only way Android would have it as a whole is if Google demanded all manufacturers ensured the MHL hardware specification be built within their devices and that simply is not going to happen.
MHL is not a prerequisite of Android it's an added extra that runs totally independent. Yes the iDevice has it which makes it sound like Android is lacking but the iDevice is just one manufacturer. Just as Samsung is a manufacturer and yes they have MHL built in their devices, so it would be wrong to compare Apple to Google in this shortcoming.
As to pointing you to an MHL adapter, you can find these easily in either ebay or Google. The trouble is though if you intend to use it with the Nexus 7 you will be wasting you money. As I have already said, the Nexus 7 does not have MHL capability so it would not be able to read an MHL adapter.

Unlike the lack of USB OTG (On-The-go) which is a simple software limitation (as rooting then using Stickmount allows complete access) MHL is different as it is a hardware limitation. Google obviously left this out (as they did with other ports such as MicroSD) to keep the costs down.
I know Headsets with remotes and mics don't work on all devices...
Do they work with Windows 8 (or any version for that matter) computers if your computer has a 4-pin port?
I tried searching but everything comes up with Windows Phone and not Windows Desktop/Tablet
Not entirely sure what you mean by "remotes" and it also depends on the headset (Apple had to go and "think different" from the rest of the industry by inventing their own proprietary BS headset configuration) but my smartphone's earbuds+headset work fine on my Surface RT. To the PC, a 4-pin socket is just a headphone jack and a mic jack that happen to be in the same place; they should work on any Windows version. Electronically, there's nothing special about them (except the Apple ones, which are a "special" sort of special).
Okay, well maybe my computer doesn't have a 4 pin... So that might be the reason why it might not work...

Are you sure? I have a thinkpad t510 (1st Gen i7) and the only audio port is a 4 pin.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, my Lenovo also uses a 4-pin combined port. It's the only laptop line I've seen do so, though; even netbooks (which need the space) have in my experience always used two separate ports. I'm sure there are others, but probably not many yet. It helps that so many people now have smartphone headsets which use 3.5mm 4-pin jacks; previous, it was rare to find a device that plugged into a 4-pin.
As the S4 will have IR - are there any usefull aplication - i know it can be used as TV remote - does it support other things basses on IR - like DSLR ( Sony ) remote ? - any applications around ?

If I could throw out my Logitech Harmony 1000 AND that awful PS3 bluetooth adapter to just use the phone, I'd certain pay for a batch programmable remote app! Hell, if Logitech ever decided to come into the 21st century and make a large touch screen remote that didn't use a resistive screen from the late 90's and had enough memory on it that I didn't need to pull the battery just about every day, I would even consider that!
I've got a little hatred for a company that sits around with their thumbs in places the sun doesn't shine but still wants to collect money from poor suckers like me with no other options available....

I've been using the WATCHON application i'm able to control my TV, set top box, A/V Receiver all from 1 simple application!
the support for local TV providers is awesome!
Data transfer, however, will not be possible because (afaik) the device only has a IR EMITTER (not a receiver) so it can only broadcast IR.
Someone with a good set of brains should be able to write an app that could control just about any IR operated device.

The S4 has the newer version of PEEL (which is called WATCHON but is basically the same upgraded application)
One of the few applications I would pay good money for is one that allowed my fine grained control of my home theater including setting up pages, the jumps to them, all that good stuff.

If its similar to the HTC One's IR emitter, you can teach it remote buttons by pointing a remote's IR emitter at the phone's one, therefore its a receiver too.
Yes i read ab out HTC one's Learning IR.
A little bit better to control every device.
Peels support is not the fastest one but i wrote them for a german device and had become this device 2 Month later.

I understand the intrigue and convenience to use the phone as a Harmony remote, but it would not replace my actual Harmony remote.
The greatest things about the Harmony remotes is that (1.) it can replace all your remotes to the point you never have to use the original remotes again. (2.) Once it's setup, it's super so easy to use.
I don't want my friends to use my phone whenever they need to change the channel.

Simple solution, dont let them use it.
Yeah, The Harmony line is pretty good and relatively inexpensive even for the top models. Not up to highest standard but they go a long ways toward it. This is the kind of control I want from the phone and I would like to be able to do the setup myself instead of the canned setup on the Harmony.

No gigabit Ethernet? For a streaming device that you install and never move again until its obsolete? Some of the product decisions these companies make are interesting.
Also, no IR=no integration. I know everyone here is focused on hacking it, but say you do get XBMC running on it smoothly? No universal remote or control system capability?
I tired to resist Apple and got a Roku 3. Dinking around with a second remote and the lack of Netflix profiles sent me over to the dark side.
Kind of not feeling this. The processor is nice, but all the things you are talking about can be done out of the box with something like a G-Box Midnight MX2.

A USB keyboard works great, but the generic WMC ir receiver didn't. So that quick, cheap "hack" didn't pan out.

Why would you ever need gigabit ethernet for a streaming box? Even a direct play blu-ray tops out around 40Mb...there is absolutely no need for gigabit.

I'm all for fast networks, all our computers at home have one or more solid state drives so even gigabit is not enough at this point. I get why didn't they put it on the FireTV but maybe the hardware inside couldn't talk to the port at 100MB/s anyway so it might not be that these boxes couldn't have Gethernet but that if they did install it your actual throughput might be crap anyway.
Nice that we have a forum/section for this device.
More 2.0 USB ports (no need for a HUB) and Gigabit Ethernet would have definitely made it more desirable.
USB 3.0 will probably come with next year's qualcomm CPUs.
The biggest thing that I'm looking forward to is AOSP ROMs, and the bootloader hacks to install it.

It is only sort of obsolete. The thing is, it is the only pretty much universal control platform for AV gear. With a few exceptions like this and the Roku 3, pretty much every AV component has an IR in.
I don't have a Logitech, I have an old URC MX-880 with an RF base station. All my gear is in built-in cabinets in what was supposed to be the media niche in my family room. I have a custom built low profile fireplace mantle, and our firebox is sitting on the slab. This allowed us to mount the TV above the fireplace at a more reasonable height, and more importantly, in the center of the room. The only wires showing are the sub cable and its power cable, and even those just barely. The surround speakers are all in-ceiling ( our family room has almost no wall space...its all open to the kitchen, foyer, bedroom hallway, and windows). So the RF remote kicks butt. The Logitech remotes are nice (wish URC had as many IR codes), but they are not as flexible as a URC, even something as low-end for them as an old MX-880. I used to be in the business, so I have CCP, etc. and can program it myself.
I am not willing to give all that up for a $99 box when I have another $99 box that works with it. Plus, she-who-decides wants one f%$ing remote.
Heh, still better than an X-Box One, lol. (Google "longer cable for Kinect" if you like to read rage.)
Hi guys!
I know that USB type C can map to several devices (even VGA/HDMI).
How do we know which ones are supported?
I'd fancy buying a USB<->HDMI Adapter (smilar to the Slimport<>HDMI I have for my Nexus5).
Will it be supported?
It's not USB 3.1 so I don't know if all of those would still be supported.
In the reddit AMA the developers confirmed it would not have HDMI out. You could always mirror it with a chromecast though.
Then why USB Type-C if none of the goodies? Just for fast-charging and reversability?
Casting takes a lot of power and heat.
(Isn't losing video-out another downgrade?)

Well, quoting myself... Actually would the rendering at the device with dedicated hardware give up more heat than broadcasting via WiFi?
Which would take more power?
Allways believe that any kind of "air transmission" is quite power-consuming.

Yeah it is a downgrade. I never cared if a phone could stream HDMI before, but now that I'm seeing a 6P as way to carry a single device (no more tablet with HDMI + phone), it is disappointing. Plus, when I read about USB-C having so many capabilities, I was hoping the phone would include some of them instead of it just being a connector choice.
Strange choice leaving out the HDMI stuff etc. Don't understand it. I wonder if the 810 gets too hot outputting to HDMI.
I don't know if people would use stuff other than OTG or video-out. But it'd definitely be nice for some guys for other devices (even though most can be connected to OTG).
Ok... really just video-out
Casting generating less heat than rendering video... hmm..... no idea...

If you have ever done presentations using a micro-usb to HDMI cable, you know that this puts a lot of stress on the connector. And having to drag a cable all over the place is an inconvenience. This is with a Nexus 7 (2013). For me, the presence of WiFi Direct and hence Miracast is far more important. I find that with the Nexus 7 at least, Miracast works perfectly. I use an Actiontec Screenbeam Mini2 as a dongle. I am anticipatinf that the Nexus 6p will work as well, but we will see.

I use an Actiontec Screenbeam Mini2 as a dongle. I am anticipatinf that the Nexus 6p will work as well, but we will see.

I don't think anyone wants the cable, per se. It is plug-n-play that we want. How do you go to a friend's house, hotel, couch-surfing, etc., and watch a movie that is on your Nexus 6P (on whatever televion is available).
