Math Teacher seeking Tablet!

Hi Everyone,
I am looking for tablet advice. I am a high school math teacher who teaches using SMARTboards. If you've never heard of this, it's basically a giant white board that is also a touchscreen (picture a 6 foot tablet mounted to the wall). It mirrors the PC in my classroom (via a projector mounted on the ceiling), and allows lots of fun interactive opportunities with my students. However, I am stuck at the front of the room with my back to my kids a lot. I want to change all that, so I want to buy a tablet to control the PC (which in turn controls the SMARTboard).
What I am seeking requires a tablet that could take over a Windows XP PC (wirelessly I assume - we do have WiFi access). Any suggestion on good apps for remote access would be appreciated here, but also I want to know this - would this system seem to be a good one with the Nexus 7?
Do you guys think the screen is large enough for this sort of application (solving math problems with a stylus, and this would be projected onto a large screen for my kids to see)? Or would you think a 10" screen would be better?
Also, would this idea work, technologically? WiFi access of PC... this should allow writing on the tablet to write on the PC... SMARTboard would then show what I'm writing since it is a clone of the PC screen... I just need to make sure that I can easily control programs remotely from the tablet.
I know this may sound like a mess, but I really want to do my homework before spending money I don't otherwise NEED to spend. My smartphone (EVO 4G LTE) does all I need right now, but this would be a toy that I can also use daily for work. Thanks for any input you guys have! Feel free to ask questions if what I said didn't make perfect sense. I just know that XDA is the place to go for tech questions, and this is an awesome community.

Splashtop 2 is really good, works great with my computer.
A 7in screen should be fine if the app in question can zoom, or you dont mind less space.
I notice that with my remote desktop it doesnt matter if im zoomed in unless i try to name a file, or if im using photoshop to paint.

I would imagine the smartboard uses its own software, could you list the boards make/model? We might be able to help out a bit more. Otherwise you'll just be connecting your tablet to your computer via remote desktop and then using it to control your smartboard. I would imagine you would definitly lose some functionality that way and it would be hard to control with the small screen.
I would suggest either getting a netbook or small laptop and just face the class using it or get a stool to set it on, or to go to the google play store online and see if your smartboard has an app.

I have done this actually
I love my nexus but i do NOT think its big enough..
when my arm was in a sling from surgery for over 5 months.. I would use SPLASH TOP .
My tablet was a 10 inch Acer a500 tablet connected thru my netgear wifi router in close proximity . to my Wired connection on the same router. With HDMI MIRROR to 42 INCH HD TV.. i used handwriting and photo shop on the tv screen . i think the 10 inch tablet was ok but the hand writing is hard because of the size of the screen on the tablet Drawing something say the 3 inches tall 1 letter on the tablet will show up as 4 feet tall on that display ..
Your software could have some zoom features in it to correct this. Other wise it would be difficult to make it work... its hard for my to explain the issue .
very doable if your program on the computer can overcome the zoom issue.. i THINK This is what the post above mine was saying..

+1 for Splashtop, but I would imagine there is some sort of Smartboard app specifically for Android devices. If there is such an app, that would probably be your best bet, but I don't know.
Splashtop on the other hand was the smoothest remote control software I've used. It's free as well (as long as your using it on a local network).

if there is a app for the smart board then a 7 in tablet will likely work .. the issue is the resolution and more so pixel density .. If the app will let you project say 1-4 ratio or what ever you need to make it work and resize then you could have a winner...
we use something similar to that smart board at work for blue prints..
ohh and +1 more for splash top Its best and i have tried them all.. the issue could lie in the speed and network ability of the xp pc

Unfortunately there is no SmartBoard app yet. Apple is getting one this fall, and Android MAY in the future. As for now, u can't bank on that.
I'm thinking the Samsung Tab 2 10.1 would be a good choice. Or maybe I should look into Windows Tablets... Hmm.

I cosign those who said Splashtop and for a tablet, I would recommend a Transformer over the Galaxy Tab.

If you can wait till october- November I suggest you look into windows 8 tablet/PC which could do all of your computer functions with pen input and run all your computer applications.

I have a friend who is also an elementary school teacher and I recommended this device to her as she is also using the smartboard. I haven't used it myself but I think the size of screen is good for it unless you also already have a 10 inch tablet. But to each is own I know I write extremely small and she is more of a bubbly letter kind of gal so I can fit write more you could say.

I checked out tablets at Fry's Electronics today... 7" is definitely too small for this application.
Does anyone else have issues with accuracy of the styli out there today? I tried a few tablets and a few styli... I couldn't write an equation to save my life! It kept not reading it or appearing slightly above or below where I wanted. Then I tried the S pen on the Sammy Note 10.1... It was incredible! It was like writing on paper with a pencil! I don't wanna spend that much, but man that thing was incredible... I think that's what I may need.
Thanks for all of the help guys! Any other tips are still appreciated but I'm pretty sure I won't be a Nexus 7 owner...

One thing that a teacher had was a Mobi mobile interactive whiteboard. It is a thing that hooks up to your computer and is exactly what you are looking for. Also they have clickers with a program that yo ask questions and they key in the answer and you can see who is right/Wong and what answer they had. Hope I helped!

How is the IR blaster and the QuickRemote feature?

I am curious how the LG G2 IR blaster works as a remote control compared to the GS4 and HTC One? Is it very responsive to turning on your TV? What about for DVD/Bluray players or Air conditioners?

My good friend has an S4 and it works identical to his. Pretty much have to point the phone directly at the IR sensor. But that can also depend on the device you are controlling. But i do know the built in app, quick remote is a great app and has worked with every device I have currently. Tvs, sounds systems, dish, etc

Xbox as a DVD player in app, my pana plasma, my Yamaha receiver, pretty much everything but my myth box. Admittedly, I haven't put in any time trying my myth box.

it's pretty bad. there's absolutely no range. you have to literally be standing directly in front of what you're using.. not off to the side whatsoever. the gs4 had better range and angles.

Interesting. The LG G2's IR blaster looks like the same size as the GS4 but way smaller than the HTC One. I don't get why it would have range or angle issues compared to the GS4.

Doesn't handle complex remotes from what I've seen so far. Tried to add a WMC remote and that was fail-tastic.

Those are precisely my observations with the Verizon G2:
Windows Media Center 7 is next to impossible to control unless I am nearly touching the IR receiver.
My Panasonic V10 plasma is also next to impossible to control unless I am 2-3 feet from the IR receiver.
I can't get my Denon AVR to control at all.
Looks like I'm sticking with Ceton's media center app and my harmony one for a while longer.

Anyone try a different IR app?

I had the S4 before and I love the remote on the G2. It's more basic but on my stuff it's faster and doesn't have all the watch on junk I don't care about. Also you can access it from the notification bar from anywhere and you can use it on the lock screen even with a pass code.

I find that it works, but like others have mentioned you need a pretty good direct line of sight. I have it set up for my Sony TV, Sony Blu-Ray, Pioneer Receiver and my Xbox. TBH, I haven't tested how well the xbox controlls work, but I had to manually program it using a different Xbox remote that I already had. Based on previous use w/ a physical Xbox remote, the IR sensor in the Xbox is pretty crappy, I don't expect the G2 to be any better. Bottom line: It's convenient at times, and annoying at others. total wash.

Thanks for all the responses. I don't mind that I need to be line of sight in order to use the remote control feature because who honestly is not facing the TV or what not when they are using the remote. These IR blasters are a new thing on smartphones so I am sure future generations will be better.

I was excited to try out the IR blaster on my new verizon lg g2 and was very disappointed as well. It's not that you have to be facing what you are controlling but you need to be really close. My couch is probably 8-12 feet back from the tv depending on where you sit, and it doesn't even come close to controlling anything unless i reach all the way out and lift my arm all the way up so the angle is perfectly pointing at the device. It's incredibly awkward and a complete waste of time. Oh and that is if i'm at the closest distance, anything further and it doesn't work at all no matter how I angle it. Don't get me wrong I love this phone but the IR blaster is pretty much useless. Maybe mine is defective but even during setup when i was standing 4 feet away I had to click multiple times for it to do anything. I read a lot of reviews on the device and didn't see anyone complain about it until I started digging.. All the major sites just raved that it had an IR blaster and that it worked similar to the other recent phones that have come out with IR blasters.. No mention that it has horrible range at all. I only found this thread and 1 others talking about bad range.

Could someone post the APKs? I accidentally deleted mine when I was uninstalling all of the bloat.

Same problem here...totally useless. I have 4 different brands of tv' sand I only can get it to work on one of them. Will not work with any directv boxes. Total crap.

don't know about the negative comments but it seems to work great in my house Samsung hd tv sony hi fi and humax set top box hd all work excellently ? no problems whatsoever so not sure why maybe because im using it in a small room idk but ive no negative things to say about it

Works with my directv boxes and my Samsung tv. The drawback is you need to be close or our won't work.

Agreed... I am not a developer any longer and do not have ties to get it moving... I guess this will be a waiting game... When we can see root & ROM

No gigabit Ethernet? For a streaming device that you install and never move again until its obsolete? Some of the product decisions these companies make are interesting.
Also, no IR=no integration. I know everyone here is focused on hacking it, but say you do get XBMC running on it smoothly? No universal remote or control system capability?
I tired to resist Apple and got a Roku 3. Dinking around with a second remote and the lack of Netflix profiles sent me over to the dark side.
Kind of not feeling this. The processor is nice, but all the things you are talking about can be done out of the box with something like a G-Box Midnight MX2.

Cost next to nothing with a USB IR receiver.

Got my Fire TV today, can't wait for the hacking community to get in on this one. Looks like its got lots of potential, especially in the retro/emulation arena with the optional remote.
A USB keyboard works great, but the generic WMC ir receiver didn't. So that quick, cheap "hack" didn't pan out.

IR is really irrelevant.. I dont use it.. Bluetooth is all we need!

It's not only because you don't use that it means irrelevant. A lot of people have good IR remotes like the Logitech one...

Agreed.. My logic and reason is IR is minimally 20yrs old tech that's all but obsolete. IMO...

Why would you ever need gigabit ethernet for a streaming box? Even a direct play blu-ray tops out around 40Mb...there is absolutely no need for gigabit.

no one needs 10/100/1000 but is it very handy when it comes to transfering files over a gigabit network. Also what does it hurt since gigabit has been out for years. Ouya/ Mojo/ Fire tv all have fastethernet and its annoying that they didnt put gigabit mostly because my whole network is 10/100/1000 and i hate bottlenecks.

I'm all for fast networks, all our computers at home have one or more solid state drives so even gigabit is not enough at this point. I get why didn't they put it on the FireTV but maybe the hardware inside couldn't talk to the port at 100MB/s anyway so it might not be that these boxes couldn't have Gethernet but that if they did install it your actual throughput might be crap anyway.

Nice that we have a forum/section for this device.
More 2.0 USB ports (no need for a HUB) and Gigabit Ethernet would have definitely made it more desirable.
USB 3.0 will probably come with next year's qualcomm CPUs.
The biggest thing that I'm looking forward to is AOSP ROMs, and the bootloader hacks to install it.

Lol, looks like others jumped in before I got here. For me, it is mostly about downloading to attached storage quickly. Plus, why not? Annoying to leave out a $2 part to make the magic $99 price point.

It is only sort of obsolete. The thing is, it is the only pretty much universal control platform for AV gear. With a few exceptions like this and the Roku 3, pretty much every AV component has an IR in.
I don't have a Logitech, I have an old URC MX-880 with an RF base station. All my gear is in built-in cabinets in what was supposed to be the media niche in my family room. I have a custom built low profile fireplace mantle, and our firebox is sitting on the slab. This allowed us to mount the TV above the fireplace at a more reasonable height, and more importantly, in the center of the room. The only wires showing are the sub cable and its power cable, and even those just barely. The surround speakers are all in-ceiling ( our family room has almost no wall space...its all open to the kitchen, foyer, bedroom hallway, and windows). So the RF remote kicks butt. The Logitech remotes are nice (wish URC had as many IR codes), but they are not as flexible as a URC, even something as low-end for them as an old MX-880. I used to be in the business, so I have CCP, etc. and can program it myself.
I am not willing to give all that up for a $99 box when I have another $99 box that works with it. Plus, she-who-decides wants one f%$ing remote.
Heh, still better than an X-Box One, lol. (Google "longer cable for Kinect" if you like to read rage.)

The IR Blaster and TV App

I have to say that the IR blaster bundled with the TV app is an awesome combination. The TV app wasn't mentioned anywhere else but it performs wonderfully and has some great features.

Was like that on the m7 too.

Yeah, I thought it was a gimmick and didn't give it much thought. But I gave it a shot the other night laying in bed and I can't believe I ignored it for so long. At night before falling asleep, I tend to just channel surf until I find something that I'll fall asleep to. The included guide that shows me sports or movies that are currently on without having to wade through hundreds of channels on the cable box's guide is amazing. Then I can just hit the tune button on the phone and it's playing on my TV in seconds.
It's so much more convenient because I typically have my phone nearby when I go to bed but could have left the remote anywhere in the bedroom. This way I have access to a better guide and I don't have to hunt for the remote in the dark.

Best feature few know about. While the app is open you can use the volume rockers for TV volume control. Great for when you have to hold the phone out for control and it rotates on you

Also pleasantly surprised with it. I didn't think I'd use it but it's really versatile and easy to use so I found myself using it about as much as my actual remotes, which is nice.
Even the interface and features are surprisingly good - with one gripe: I wish I could add a device that wasn't either a TV, a Topbox or a Home Cinema amp.

You can! At least you could let it learn from every remote you have. Just go to the remote app, swipe to the very most right called "more", and hit the + button.

Yeah, but it's button-by-button and is implied to be of a certain existing device, it's possible just annoying.
Still, all-in-all an excellent program.

You can download remote apps on the play store that work well. I downloaded one for my Apple TV and it works great

N5 didnt have it, although kitkat supported it. I thought google will make it norm with next nexus.

I think that they're in the same boat as me in thinking it more as a novelty feature. My notes have had it as well as my G3 but they're all pretty weak on the software side and the blaster is always finicky on range and the angle at which you point it. If you want a real universal get a normal remote with a proper blaster. Unless you're trying to show off or screw around with the TVs at the bar, it's kind of pointless.

I use mine alllllll the time. I have 2 kids and 2 dogs that love to play hide and seek with them lol. I literally have all my TV's, blue ray/dvd players, cable boxes, and sound systems programed on my Note 3 and love it! I also travel (I literally am gone 6 months+ a year) and much prefer my phone over most hotels eco-remotes. I would have loved to seen this as a feature personally as well.

The best is using it at sports bars and start turning off their tv

If there a device you can connect to via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi that will convert to infrared to control TVs?

That's one thing I forgot about that I'll miss from my g2. I didn't use it often but when I did it was handy. (It's fun shutting the projectors off in classes that are boring lol.

I liked having one on my HTC One M7 but barely used it after the first week. I also had one on my GS4 Active, but the remote software was nowhere near as good as HTC's so I never used it. It's not something that I've missed since getting rid of those phones. It would be cool to have, but it's more novelty than anything.

I have it on my Note 3. I used it once, much like multi window, to be able to say oh neato. Then never used it again. I'm glad they didn't waste time or money putting it into the N6.

There was a funding available for an IR blaster that plugs into the 3.5mm headphone jack on any phone.

Says only for apple devices. But that looks really nice. If I really missed it I'd buy one but probably won't miss it much

Though I can't seem to find anything regarding their app on the Play Store.

Once I purchased smart ir remote in the play store, this feature is a must have. I will stick with my GPE M8 for now. May get a Nexus 6 off swappa in a few months

There ARE alternatives out there. You just need to search "3.5mm IR" on Google/Google Images and you'll find some methods. I found these as well.

might look into that sennheiser one but do you know of any that connect to your phone via bluetooth or wifi and can transmit IR signal? I'd like to avoid having to attach a device to my phone everytime i want to use the TV. Chromecast can turn on one of my TVs but the other it can't. I wish they'd put a turn off feature in the chromecast.

Interesting that your Chromecast will turn on the TV, but you are looking for a way to turn it off. I've got a smart TV that I can't turn on by Chromecast or otherwise from my phone but I can turn it off!
